Packers Daily Links: Charles Woodson, Grand Marshal of Indycar Event

Cornerback Charles Woodson told drivers to start their engines at the Milwaukee 225 yesterday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

On the Packers calendar today is the Nick Collins JumpStart Foundation Football Camp held at New Berlin West High School in Wisconsin where running back Ryan Grant and cornerback Tramon Williams will also be acting as instructors. Also being held today is the NFL Broadcast Boot Camp where former Packers Antonio Freeman, Rob Davis and Barrett Brooks are taking part...

Cornerback Charles Woodson took part in the Milwaukee 225 IndyCar race yesterday at the Milwaukee Mile. "Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson served as the grand marshall, giving the command to start engines," writes Chris Jenkins of the Associated Press. "He was given a racing helmet painted to look like a Packers helmet, signed by the drivers." Given that next year's Super Bowl will be held in Indianapolis, it was perhaps appropriate that the cornerback took part in the motor racing sport with namesake ties to the city hosting the Super Bowl.

Over the weekend, Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette previewed free agency from a Packers-standpoint. "Reports in the last week or so suggest a CBA could be finished soon, perhaps by early to mid July," writes Dougherty. "When it’s signed, the start of free agency will soon follow, maybe within a couple days, and in a drastically compressed signing period Thompson will be looking to bring back at least a few of the Packers’ 12 likely unrestricted free agents, plus add the undrafted rookies the NFL lockout rules prohibited teams from pursuing after the draft." Cullen Jenkins will be an unrestricted free agent no matter what. Things will get more interesting if players with four accrued years of service, like James Jones among others, are eligible to become unrestricted as well.

Clay Matthews came in third on USA Today's list of the top outside linebackers in the NFL. "A Pro Bowler as a rookie, Matthews stepped up to all-pro level in 2010 with 13 1/2 regular-season sacks, 3 1/2 more in the playoffs and a ball-jarring blast on Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall that helped catapult Green Bay to its 31-25 victory in Super Bowl XLV," writes reporter Jim Corbett. Matthews checks in behind DeMarcus Ware and James Harrison.

Tom Oates of the Wisconsin State Journal puts into perspective the recent ESPN the Magazine's recent rankings of the top franchises in professional sports with the Green Bay Packers at no. 1. "It’s a good thing ESPN the Magazine wasn’t around in the 1970s or ’80s," writes Oates. It's amazing to think how far the Packers have come since that time.
