Packers Considering a Trade for QB Colt McCoy
The Packers are reportedly considering a draft-day deal for Browns QB Colt McCoy.

In need of a backup quarterback for NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, the Packers may call on an old friend to provide them just that on day 2 of the NFL draft.
According to Bill Huber of The Packer Report, Green Bay is considering a trade with Mike Holmgren and the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Colt McCoy.

The Browns aggressively selected Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden at No. 22 overall Thursday night, and GM Tom Heckert has since been non-committal to keeping McCoy (6-2, 210 lbs.) on the roster. Weeden is expected to be the front-runner for the Browns' starting job this fall, making McCoy expendable.
Depending on the Browns' price tag for McCoy, the former Texas quarterback could be the Packers' answer for a backup behind Rodgers. Former backup Matt Flynn bolted Green Bay for a chance to start with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, leaving a hole at second-string quarterback that appears up for grabs heading into 2012. Graham Harrell and Nick Hill are currently the only quarterbacks behind Rodgers, but it was widely expected that Green Bay would take another developmental signal caller late in the draft.
The Packers have 11 picks left to make, so there's certainly seems to be enough capital available to make a deal.
A third-round pick in 2009, McCoy has started 21 games for the Browns in three seasons. He threw 20 touchdowns against 20 interceptions for a passer rating of 75.4 in those 21 starts.

I was just thinking that after Cleveland got fleeced last night, they should offer the Browns a couple of picks to move up to the top of the second and grab Reyes, Still or Worthy. Maybe they can make it a package deal.

totally agree. though i've seen some projections of Reyes falling even past the Packers 2nd round slot. But nothing like knowing for sure you have a pass rush...

This is the first time in the history of my life where a half-baked idea I've thrown out actually has the potential to happen. I'd love this move.
Two years backing up Rodgers and learning from McCarthy and Clements would be the best thing that ever happened to McCoy. And for the next two years McCoy would be as reliable a backup as any 4th or 5th round pick the Pack might draft.

Yes, my thoughts exactly! I said the same thing last night after the Browns drafted Weeden. McCoy would be better and more experienced than anyone they could get with a 4th rounder, and they should be able to get him for a lot less than that. I love the idea of getting McCoy.

GB would be crazy to go into season 2012 without a 'legitimate' BU QB. With a 'wide-open' window, now is not the time to 'cross your fingers' that someone like Harrell can win a few if AR should go down. Late round draft pick should be enough.

I wouldn't mind McCoy coming aboard. The Browns still have Seneca Wallace as their own backup, I believe.

If Russell Wilson is gone at our 4th round Comp picks then give the Browns a 5th or 6th for him depending on if we don't use them to trade up in the second or third rounds.

It would be an excellent and probably cheap move on TT's part. McCoy, now persona non grata, has talent but had no weapons to work with in Cleveland.
His cntract wouldn't be a problem: 7/22/2010: Signed a four-year, $4.96 million contract. The deal contains $1.07 million guaranteed, including a $751,000 signing bonus. 2012: $540,000, 2013: $575,000, 2014: Free Agent
He would provide great insurance behind AR and if Harrell develops TT could if he wanted trade either one in the off season for more than he paid.

I like the move... He was taken in the third, not a starter, I'd say they can get him for a 6th, maybe?

I guess I'm the only one that has faith in Harrell.
If Colt comes on board, he'll just rob developmental snaps from Graham.
I think Colt is too small/too short.
He got thrown in the fire too early and is likely toast as a result. Might as well pick somebody late and let him learn the system first, rather than have to un/re-train Colt.
But then what do I know?

I like Harrell, but I'd be more than a little nervous if he were the top backup QB heading into 2012.

Colt is 6'1, 215. I don't think that's too small.
He's started 21 games and has a 58% completion percentage and a rating of 74.5. That's really pretty good considering the utter lack of offensive talent the Browns have.

He's one inch shorter and ten pounds lighter than Aaron Rodgers.
I say it's a wash all things considered.
At this point, I think he's a little further ahead than Harrell. I say go for it. A sixth round draft pick for his current salary is not a big gamble.
Develop both Harrell and McCoy. Suddenly you have a good QB2 and possible capital for a future trade.

This is exactly why the packers are mulling this option. You might have two really capable QB's that came on the cheap side, and they might provide capital in the future.

I dig the idea. Throw a sixth at em, if they take it, sweet. The kid has heart and a good head on his shoulders, it would be well worth it.

Colt won more games in College History than anyone. When he got drafted by Cleveland, he looked like he was in shock. It was emberassing to have to see him with those bungaling Brown's. I really hope Colt McCoy comes to GB. It would really be good for both.
