Packers Coaching in College: Pelini Travels to Penn State

The former Packers linebackers coach enters a crucible of scrutiny leading Nebraska into a game and an atmosphere at Penn State that will be unlike anything else.

Several former Green Bay Packers players and coaches are now coaching in the college ranks. Here's a brief preview as Week 7 of the college season gets underway...

  • A large portion of entire country will be paying attention to what transpires in State College, Pennsylvania today, though the football game is taking a backseat to the scandal unfolding regarding the disgusting sexual abuse allegations on the Penn State campus. Former Packers linebackers coach Bo Pelini is the head coach at Nebraska (7-2), and he was supposed to be coaching against head coaching icon Joe Paterno before the latter was fired amid the still-developing situation. Most of the scrutiny will be on Penn State and how the coaches, players and even fans respond to the recent incidents, but in terms of football, it's actually a very important game in regards to the Big Ten standings among two teams with a chance to still win their respective divisions. Will Penn State (8-1) be distracted or will they be inspired to play well after all the negative attention of the past week? The game airs nationally 11 a.m. Central time on ESPN.
  • Former Packers Mark D'Onofrio and Jethro Franklin will be taking part in the Miami, Florida State rivalry game as assistant coaches for the Hurricanes, but the game has a little less meaning with neither team threatening for a conference title. Miami (5-4) plays on the road at Florida State (6-3) looking for bowl eligibility. The game will air nationally on either ABC or ESPN depending on where you live at 2:30 p.m.
  • Former Packers head man Mike Sherman could be coaching for his job at Texas A&M (5-4) as it travels to Kansas State (7-2). The Aggies have had issues playing a full four quarters this year, and they'll need to playing a pesky Kansas State team. The game, like Miami, Florida State, will be televised nationally on the ABC, ESPN reverse mirror at 2:30 p.m.
  • Former director of player development Turner Gill could be in the same boat as Mike Sherman coaching for his job. The Kansas head coach leads his Jayhawks (2-7) into a home match with Baylor (5-3). The Kansas offense is respectable but their sieve-like defense will have their hands full with Baylor's offense led by quarterback Robert Griffin. The game is not televised.
  • Vanderbilt (4-5) hosts Kentucky (4-5) today looking to keep their bowl hopes alive. Led by former wide receivers coach James Franklin, the Commodores would only be a win away from qualifying for a rare bowl appearance if they can get the victory today. The game is at 11:21 a.m. and can be watched online via ESPN3.
