Packers claim Gerald Willis and Jamal Davis off waivers

Both defenders are former Miami Dolphins.

The Packers added a couple former Miami Dolphins via waivers on Tuesday.

Willis, a defensive tackle who is the younger brother of former Giants and current Washington safety Landon Collins, is a former second-team All-American for the University of Miami. He went undrafted in 2019 and signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. After being cut at the end of camp, he caught on with the Dolphins on their practice squad before being elevated to the active roster in November.

Davis is a pass-rusher who was a defensive end at the University of Akron. Miami signed him off the Titans practice squad and he played in three games late last season, seeing only limited playing time.

I take this that Green Bay plans to fill as many holes as possible before the draft and free up their board a bit. I was very surprised that Willis was let go esp. by the Dolphins. Maybe injuries or something between the ears for those two.

Draft move. Gutey can now trade picks to move around. Did you really think Pettine would trust Rookies?

ALTERNATE QUESTION: Did you really think that Pettine started rookie Darnell Savage in 14 games last year and played him on 83% of the snaps? And did you really think that Pettine played rookie Jaire Alexander in 13 games, starting 11, for a total of about 72% of the snaps the year before that? DId you think that even undrafted Tyler Lancaster took 25% of the defensive snaps in his rookie year?

Will Willis or Davis log more snaps than that?

#1 Choice. And he was gently moved in, when T. Williams went to corner. Jackson just failed badly. Alexander was a #1 again, with No options but to play him. When your last against the run. Something has to change. Willis and Davis won't start. They'll be lucky to make the team. They will draft a OLB. I figured Rd 3. If they trade it. Bet CM3 will be coming back. You need to understand that they gave up a #1 and #3 for Savage and Alexander.

Sorry, but you're just all kinds of wrong. Savage was an opening day starter vs. Chicago. So if that's what you mean by saying that he was "gently moved in" then yeah, you're spot on. He was a Day One rookie starter. Savage would have started all 16 games except that he missed weeks 6 and 7 with an ankle injury.

Alexander played in 13 of the 16 games, starting games 3,4 and 7 to 15. He was ruled out of weeks 5-6 because of a groin injury. He did not play the 16th game due to injury.

And yes, obviously 1st round picks are better players and therefore more likely to play early. That's why I mentioned that Lancaster played 25% of the snaps, although he wasn't even drafted.

Regardless of whatever other unrelated noise you want to talk about, the point is pretty clear. Pettine has never shown any unusual hesitance to play rookies.

Regardless of whatever other unrelated noise you want to talk about? That was really your point! Looking at every line for negativity is one thing. But Pettine has never shown any unusual hesitance to play rookies???. Is just plain BS. Jackson, Summers, and several first year players would have seen some playing time. And Brown CB wouldn't have been cut if they didn't get in his dog house. Arron Rodgers even said positive things about Brown. So if Gutey doesn't spend big draft capitol on a guy. They won't play. Unfortunately for them!

LLLLOOOOLLLL. Josh Jackson and other first year players "would have seen some playing time???" Dude, do you follow the Packers??

In his rookie year, Josh Jackson played 67.5 PERCENT of the defensive snaps, THIRD HIGHEST among Packer defensive backs, trailing only TWill and the ROOKIE, Jaire Alexander. Jackson was listed as a STARTER FOR TEN GAMES out of 16.

Jackson also played 40% of ST snaps. Only SEVEN Packers played more total snaps than Jackson in his rookie year (Martinez, TWill, Bakh, Linsley, ARod, Adams, Taylor).

Stop talking straight out of your ass.

I don't know where the heck you get your info. Jersey has listed the snaps after every game. You obviously are counting special teams etc.. I'm typing not talking. Have a nice day. I'm sorry I upset yours.

Jackson was a rookie in 2018, not last year. And he was likely to get a similar amount of time last year if he didn't get injured in training camp.

Rashan Gary played nearly 25% of the defensive snaps in 2019--for a team that did not miss many starter games due to injuries. Where would guys like Summers have played? Did he earn any PT? He has always been listed on the depth chart behind Martinez, not Goodson. You're advocating taking Martinez--the defensive signal caller--off the field to put Summers on the field...just to get him snaps?

Jackson actually played about 68% of the defensive snaps as a rookie in 2018, too. He was unable to do that in his second year...largely because he was outplayed.

Brown? He was in his second year when the Packers cut him--he played a lot of snaps AS A ROOKE (27%) UDFA in 2018--and rumor has it there were locker room issues there. He'd clearly been passed on the depth chart by Chandon Sullivan in 2019, and Pettine had also moved to using safeties in dime rather than flooding the field with CBs.

I just don't think your assertion of Pettine not playing rookies holds up.

and several {first +} year players would have seen some playing time. OK.! He was better then Jackson. Yes Brown did get cut in his second year with the Packers. (Also played hurt.). Believe your missing the fact Martinez played with a club on his hand. And the criticism of him by other fans. * Footnote* But the Assertion of Pettine not playing rookies holds up. Really? Fact of draft status still prevails in Green Bay.

"Fact of draft status still prevails in Green Bay."

Draft status is usually proportional to skill, talent and preparation. This should not surprise you.

Tell us who the better player was who didn't get rookie snaps?

Stockholder......yes, Pettine will use rookies, trust or not.

And yes, you are correct that they might not even make the team. They are the bottom half of the 90 man roster. They are camp bodies.

I give Gute credit for pickin thru all available players, especially 2nd year guys who still have something to prove. He looks fast to me, more speed please. Shows they are actively trying to find a gem in the rough. I like that. Go Pack

If you hit on even one, it’s an incredible boost to the roster as Sullivan was last year. Right now, we have depth that has actually played added to the D line and one cover type OLB in the Fackrell spot to add to competition. Good move, long shot, but both have high ceilings. Why not bolster the 90 with a little experience on the cheap.

I liked Willis at Miami his last season. Will he get his head into the game and show discipline and desire?? He has the three tech ability.

Why is this being downvoted? It is absolutely true that these are two UDFAs who didn’t catch on elsewhere? Hell, they might not even make training camp, much less the 53 man roster.

Clark, Lowry and Lancaster and a couple of open spaces. We’re going to take a DT in the first two days.

The guy I like best is Hamilton in the third.
