Packers Calendar: Offseason Program Begins, Aaron Rodgers' Soft Deadline Arrives

April 15 was a date by which quarterback Aaron Rodgers was reported to have desired to have a contract extension completed.

Monday is not only "Tax Day" in the United States, it's the beginning of the Packers' offseason workout program. It's the day a majority of players return to Green Bay for the first time since leaving after last season's playoff loss.

And it's also the date reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport that quarterback Aaron Rodgers would like to have his contract extension completed, a deadline of sorts, presumably after speaking with representatives of Rodgers.

There are no consequences if a deal does not get done. Indeed, there's nothing to indicate a deal is imminent, but it also wouldn't be surprising if were to be announced today when Rodgers is to begin his preparations for the 2013 season.

For all we know, the deal could be in place, and all Rodgers has to do is come to the facilities to sign on the dotted line and conduct an attention-getting press conference.

A situation could arise where a contract extension for linebacker Clay Matthews is announced as well, seeing as he and Rodgers share the same agent (David Dunn). It's been speculated for weeks that deals for both Matthews and Rodgers were close to being done, but precious little has been leaked through the media.

As far as the offseason program goes, there will be little to report or discuss for the first two weeks when players do little more than work on strength and conditioning.

Typically, the Packers make their strength and conditioning coach available to the media to discuss player workouts and what goes on at 1265 Lombardi Ave. but there is no player availability or opportunities for the media or public to observe such workouts.

An article appears in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in which reporter Tom Silverstein goes into greater depth about the team's offseason program and the changes in store that will be taking place this year.
