Packers Calendar: Micah Hyde Court Date

The sixth round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers will reportedly appear in an Iowa court for a public intoxication charge.

Newly drafted Green Bay Packers cornerback Micah Hyde will appear in an Iowa court on Wednesday, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

As part of a larger article that appeared in the Journal Sentinel on Tuesday, Dunne reported:

Hyde has a whirlwind week ahead. On Wednesday, he'll appear in court for a public intoxication charge from October. On Thursday, he'll fly to Green Bay for rookie orientation. On Sunday, he'll fly back to Iowa to take two exams. And then, it's off to Green Bay again.

Before any talk about film, speed, instincts, anything football-related, teams usually asked Hyde about the arrest. Past midnight, Hyde said he was at a bar near his residence and the cops showed up. His first instinct was to run.

"Like when you have a house party in high school," Hyde said. "Everyone just runs. It's just reaction. So that's what happened. It was my dumb mistake of the night."

He pleaded not guilty and is optimistic he'll beat the charge. Hyde was not given a breathalyzer test that night. Either way, Hyde said he was transparent with teams and he doesn't think the charge affected his draft stock.

No matter the outcome, it's doubtful the ruling will have much impact on Hyde's standing with the Packers. They had knowledge of his arrest before taking him in the NFL Draft less than two weeks ago.

It's also unlikely that Hyde would be suspended if found guilty for a relatively minor charge. Among the worst case scenarios is that he pays a fine and moves on. Hyde was of legal drinking age when arrested.

Also on Wednesday, several former Packers will convene at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to become trained as Heads Up Football Ambassadors.

They will participate in clinics that will reinforce tackling mechanics aimed at reducing helmet contact. The sessions also will feature education on concussion recognition and response and provide instruction on proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.

Among the former Packers participating in the event include running back Ahman Green, safety Eugene Robinson, linebacker Hardy Nickerson, running back Vince Workman, safety Mike Prior, offensive lineman Karl Swanke, wide receiver Preston Dennard, safety Blaine McElmurry and linebacker Anthony Davis.

The clinic is part of Heads Up Football, a new nationwide USA Football pilot program for the 2013 season dedicated to making the game better and safer for youth players. The former NFL players participating in the clinic will work alongside youth leagues across the nation this fall as mentors, lending support to the Heads Up Football program and reinforcing a culture of safety in youth football.

Finally on Wednesday, the previously reported NFL Career Development Symposium attended by Packers assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach Winston Moss will conclude.

Moss has been taking part in presentations and networking in an event designed for prospective NFL head coaches and general managers.

As a native of Iowa City, I can tell you the cops there hand out Public Intox charges like they are Mardi Gras beads. I wouldn't read too much into it.

For those (like me) who were wondering, Blaine McElmurry played 1 game for the Pack in 1997.

Total BS charge. I guess the cops in Iowa would rather you drive than walk away from a bar.
