Packers Calendar: Lacy, Bakhtiari in Play for PFWA Rookie Awards

Rookie of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year and the NFL's All-Rookie Team are announced by the PFWA on Tuesday.

On Monday, Green Bay Packers guard Josh Sitton was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-NFC team.

On Tuesday, Packers players Eddie Lacy and David Bakhtiari and perhaps even Micah Hyde will be waiting their turn as the PFWA announces its awards for rookies at 12:00 p.m. CT.

Awards given on Tuesday include Rookie of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year and the NFL All-Rookie team.

Practices also continue on the all-star game circuit on Tuesday at St. Petersburg in Florida for the East-West Shrine Game and in Carson, Cal. for the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

General manager Ted Thompson is in attendance at the Shrine Game, grinding as usual.

Among the best websites for practice reports from the Shrine game are published at NFLDraftScout.comOptimumScouting.com, WalterFootball.com, DraftInsider.net and GBNReport.com.

I'm role playing TT here, I'd trade up to get two picks in Round 1 to take an LB and a safety. ILB or OLB doens't matter, go with best player at that position. With my next pick, I go TE. There are quite a few good safeties and TEs in this draft and he should have no trouble getting some good players.

Assuming they stick at 21, it would take their 2nd and probably another later round pick to get an additional 1st round pick.

I'm not opposed to that idea if they can actually get an impact S and ILB, but then they wouldn't be drafting again till the 3rd or 4th round with needs at TE, WR and DL.

When they traded up to get Matthews they were in the top 1/3 of the 2nd rd and it cost the 2nd and 2 3rd round picks to get in the late 1st. Packers do NOT have the ammunition to get a 2nd 1st round pick. Keep day dreaming... No chance, NONE of that happening!

The top 3 TE's are good to great. They all should be 1st round picks. After that there is a drop off.
Honestly I wouldn't mind the Packers taking one of the top 3. They need defense, but they also need a TE, and they also could really use a big Target in the redzone.

Safety's there are 2 possible 1st round safety's. There are a few more that should be in the 2nd round mix, but overall from what I have seen so far, these are not overly deep positions with top end talent.

I would go Defense w/ our 1st and 2nd round picks. Might consider TE in the 3rd, but I think they'll give Quarless a chance this year. I'm betting they go WR this year and TE next year depending on Quarless's performance.

Agreed.

Everyone agrees S and ILB are the biggest needs on defense - get those right away. From there, I could see TE/WR in the 3rd and 4th, then DL, then another safety and then OL (they always grab one).

I know slotting a position to each round isn't how team's draft, but that's basically how I rank their areas of need.

If Raji and Pickett both go, NT becomes a much bigger need.

Yeah, I agree as well...

Also, if Sam Shields leaves CB becomes a bigger need.
Hayward and Hyde are more inside guys, and Williams while good is going to be another year older.

For me in terms of Needs this is my current ranking of needs at each position in order...
1. S
2. ILB
3. TE
4. DL - (pending on who leaves might be higher)
5. CB - (pending on Sam Shields, this might be higher).
6. WR / Return Specialist. I honestly would like to see them bring in 2 WR's. A big physical WR, and a smaller, quicker, faster WR to be a return specialist also. Maybe they have the physical WR on the roster with Harper or Dorsey, but we haven't seen anything out of them yet.
Remember that Jones is a FA this year and Nelson and Cobb are FA's after next season. Time to get more young talent to develop.
7. OLB (assuming starters stay healthy)
8. OL Depth
9. QB - (If Flynn leaves they will need a developmental QB).
10. RB (no need here, but good to bring in a non free agent player for nothing other then competition)

I expect them to go defense in the 1st few rounds actually. Honestly the majority of the draft I think will be on the defense side again. I think they will go for TE, WR, OL but later in the draft.

I am starting to have the feeling that the coaches are higher on Brad Jones then the rest of us. So I'm doubting they draft an ILB higher then round 3.

So that would mean they will be looking at DB's or DL in the 1st. Which I could see them going CB especially if they lose Shields in FA.

No matter what I think they go for Speed. I think they realized they just are not fast enough on the defense. A speedy LB that I could see them considering in round 1 if they went that route is Ryan Shazier. He is fast, and hits hard. Needs to add some weight to play ILB, but I could see him being a dark horse guy they target.

A lot to go through. Now is a good time to start talking players though with the East West Shrine game this weekend and the Senior Bowl next weekend.

I hate it too... Especially when I planned my family vacation around the draft.. And now its the same weekend that I'm gone... Ugghhhh....

Oh, I thought it was a whole month for some reason. That's not so bad (aside from your vacation planning).

Yeah, I guess I should say its 2 weeks. Its May 8th-10th. Still not to bad though...

Yeah, unfortunately I ordered airline tickets and found out a few days later that's when the draft was going to be. Oh well, I guess that's why they make DVR and wi-fi.

A long list of needs --- It what happens when your GM has 3 lousy drafts in a row & he doesn't have the gonads to use all the tools offered up by the NFL to improve a roster (free-agency/trades). One more year of this, then GB will head in a different direction. (the Board of Directors will make sure)

Jeez, the comments are full of Moe, Larry & Curly again (above). ----LOL.

Still wishing you were sitting at the big boy table, huh Arlo?

I guess this is what happens when the pouting, whining, dumbass gets himself out of the corner of the room and says something...

Funny all people who don't agree with you. Add me to the list too, Shrek. Like the Bears, "YOU STILL SUCK."

I would say we definitely have a better feel for the pulse of the Packers than you, judging by your lame comments!

Anyone here think that Borland from Wisconsin could make the Packers as the opposite OLB for Matthews? I really like him as an LB especially in his sophomore year he realy did get pressure on the QB. Plus, he knows how to tackle!

There's no such thing as an outside linebacker under 6-0 in a 3-4 defense. He might work on the inside, but not on the outside.

Geez, what's with all this TE in the first round business? 1) We have 3-4 fanastic receivers and a decent TE already. 2) Unless the dude is an awesome receiver and blocker, you usually go after TEs in the 2nd round or later, points in case-Graham and Gronkowski.

Depending what happens in free agency, the Packers might be down one good receiver and maybe two tight ends.
