Packers Calendar: Aaron Rodgers in Contention in MJCI Golf Tournament

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is just four strokes off the lead entering Sunday's final round of the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational in Las Vegas.

Rodgers and playing partner, actor Brian Baumgartner of The Office, finished Saturday's opening round at -3.

Two groups are in the tie for first place, including Rodgers' old nemesis on the football field: former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher.

Urlacher and former MLB pitcher Rodger Clemens sit at four under par, as does the twosome of Ozzie Smith and Eric Dickerson, a pair of retired baseball and football greats.

Rodgers will tee off at 10:00 a.m. local time at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

The tournament is open to the public and tickets are available online at the event's website. Money raised goes to charity.

For those looking to follow the tournament from afar, the Twitter account of the ARIA resort and casino, has been consistently providing photos and updates over the weekend, including this one of Rodgers:

Also on Sunday, Packers punter Tim Masthay wraps up his participation in the NFL Business Management & Entrepreneurial Program on the campus of Notre Dame.

Masthay will team up with some of the 27 NFL players in attendance to deliver a business plan for the Business Pitch Competition that closes out the program.

Chicago Bears signed Center Brian de la Puente, age 29, to a 1 year contract at the veteran minimum with a $65,000 signing bonus and $100,000 base salary guarantee per the Chicago Tribune and ESPN blog. Possibly a qualifying contract wherein the cap hit is less than the amount de la Puente receives (tip off is the $65,000 signing bonus, the most allowed under the CBA for a qualifying contract.

Puente was the starting center for New Orleans. He is above average in pass protection and downright bad at run blocking. Reports indicate that he has accepted being a back up center for the 35 year old Garza, the bears current center, who himself is on a 1 year contract for $1.5 million. It may be that de la Puente hopes to be the starter after Garza retires in 2015.

I wondered if TT would sign one of the 2 FA centers still available. Guess not. At the risk of only $165K, GB can’t have a veteran center on the 90-man roster for competition? Well, maybe de la Puente liked the situation in Chicago better, and he played for some of the Bears’ coaches in the past. Or maybe he doesn't fit the packers' scheme. Still….. just for insurance....
