Packers Bringing Lukas Van Ness Along Slowly

Green Bay Packers first-round pick Lukas Van Ness has not earned a starting job this season and is merely a part of the team’s rotation at edge rusher. But the former Iowa star is being brought along slowly by the coaching staff who didn’t expect him to play a bigger role in his rookie year.

Van Ness has played in each of the Packers first nine games this season. He recorded one sack and has made 13 total tackles.

Right now, Van Ness is fourth among Packers edge rushers in playing time behind starters Rashan Gary and Preston Smith and second-year man Kingsley Enagbare. Van Ness has played 34 percent of the Packers defensive snaps this season so far although that number could increase in the second half of his rookie campaign.

Outside linebackers coach Jason Rebrovich has been pleased with Van Ness’ effort and improvement this season. “Is Lukas coming along? Absolutely he is,” he said Wednesday. “Like we said from day one, he’s a freak of nature kid. He comes in here and works every day. He wants to work. He wants to get better. So, all of those things are taking the right steps. He has the right mentality. The process of things, he’s developing through his first year in the NFL for longevity of time. It’s coming through this process that he’s continuing to get better.”

One area Van Ness has definitely improved on is his run defense. While the entire Packers defense has struggled in this area, Van Ness has gotten better at diagnosing plays and getting himself in the right position to disrupt plays or make the tackle. He has made four tackles for loss already this season despite seeing only limited action.

Thus far, through nine games, Van Ness has only missed two tackles according to Pro Football Focus and both came in last week’s loss in Pittsburgh.

Van Ness is still working on his pass rush skills. His first NFL sack came in Week 1 against the Bears. Since then, the coaching staff has helped him by having him be a part of stunts as often as possible when he’s in the lineup on obvious passing downs. Still, that second sack has been elusive.

The Packers always intended to bring Van Ness along slowly. The team had three players who were clearly ahead of him on the depth chart at the start of training camp.

The role model for Van Ness as a rookie was going to be Gary, who the team drafted in the first round in 2019. Like Gary was as a rookie, Van Ness is an elite athlete who needs to improve his technique and learn the nuances of the pro game.

In Gary’s rookie year, he was behind recently signed free agents Preston and Za’Darius Smith on the depth chart along with veteran Kyler Fackrell. Gary played just 24 percent of the Packers defensive snaps as a rookie and recorded just two sacks. People were ready to declare him a bust.

But Gary improved each season and saw a bigger role. His snap total doubled in his second season, and he recorded five sacks. In his third year, he became a full-time starter and added a career high of nine sacks.

The Packers are hoping Van Ness can develop along similar lines as Gary did. With Preston Smith now over 30, Van Ness could be called upon to replace him in a year or two.

Thus far, head coach Matt LaFleur is pleased with what he’s seen from his 2023 first round draft pick.

“I think he’s done a great job. He’s really come in he’s worked his tail off,” LaFleur said. “He’s been able to grasp what we’ve asked him to do. So, I think he’s going to continue to get better and better and better. I’m really excited about what the future holds for him.”

For Van Ness, the future can’t come soon enough. He’s working hard and trying to learn as much as he can as quickly as he can.

The big hope for the Packers is that the second half of Van Ness’ rookie season should be better and more productive than the first half.

Deja vu with the draft and develop OLB in the first round...let's hope it turns out as well.

But just for the sake of comparison, check out pick #14, RT Broderick Jones. Rather than repeat the eye-popping statistics, I'll just refer you to the Lombardi Ave. article "Lukas Van Ness pick is already haunting the Packers." I don't necessarily agree with the rather short-sighted title, but the information inside makes a very compelling case for why we should have Jones over Van Ness. This is the downside of taking projects, even very talented ones, in the first round.

Sure, with all the injuries to the O line having another RT and Tom playing hurt at C instead of playing hurt at RT to keep Mt Caleb and Nijman on the bench is tempting. Now that Rashan Gary is hurt too, we might be glad to have LVN.

The folks who make instant 'bust or hero' decisions show how little they know about pro football.

A major impact on a player is the system he's drafted into and what he's asked to do. I believe Van Ness was drafted to replace Preston Smith who will likely be gone next year. Van Ness said he's putting his hand on the ground in a three-point stance like he did at Iowa and this is making him quicker.

He's far from a bust from what I've seen.

Often these players turn out great. The problem is then it’s time for their next contract.

The Packers have frequently brought along certain types of players slowly. It’s just part of their “process”. Like it or not I would expect more in year two than year one.

That's what we said about Watson.

But then again, we had more hope with Watson, because he showed us more.

The Packers Draft and Develop just isn't what it used to be, or what many believed it to be over the last decade.
I hope the time for LVN has more warp drive than it has had with Love. I know, the position is different, but still.

"the position is different"

Yes, and this makes me wonder if 'development' of a DE should take as long as, say, with a WR. I mean, I get it about gap discipline and read-and-react, but for a DE just playing like a borderline psycho can cover for being a little slow with the homework. "Hercules throws his weight around, runs like Clay, and just wrecks stuff" would be a mid-season assessment I'd find pretty acceptable.

I totally agree!!! is it me, does GUTE ALWAYS draft for the future? To me it seems like a lot of his draft picks take time to develop if they ever do.

When the team was (supposedly) all in for a SB, Gutey was drafting for the future so I'd say yes, that's all he ever does.

In Gutey we trust - to not be a people person.

Is it possible to have too many pass rushers?

Yes, when the other team runs the ball and he is poor at setting the edge or ducks inside instead of setting the edge like Z used to do.

Or when he’s really intended to be a DL. Just remember, there’s no difference between them. Sorry Kampman, you just didn’t get it when it really was no change at all.

Packers' development of rookies is maddening. All rookies, for a long time. They don't want to throw them into the fire and have them be discouraged, I get, but they are terribly slow. Too slow. Time is not on teams' side like it used to be. I don't think these Packers coaches have the capacity to teach these kids how to impact the game like some better teams' coaches. If Gary isn't able to play, I hope they give plenty of snaps to LVN and let him sink or swim. Really the best way to evaluate and correct his decisions. Why wait?

I think LVN should jump past Enagbare on the depth chart after his stupid penalties a couple of weeks ago and he just is not showing much this season.

Get LVN film on Reggie White play. LVN is wasting time & energy playing "patty cake, patty cake" with the tackles.

White had miles better techniques & results than Gary.

True, but Reggie was bigger and more of a DE than OLB (despite how MLF describes the position). LVN has more speed but less strength to battle offensive tackles. I believe that the team was a 4-3 at the time so it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

Reggie White is among the top three defensive ends of all time. To put a rookie down because he isn't Reggie White is like saying you were useless on your first date because you weren't Antonio Banderas.

I was beating the drum to take Van Ness as the #1 pick, but I expected more—much more, from his draft position/choice.
I don’t believe your #1 pick should be a rotational player—on the job training- get him in the lineup.
As for the comment about the improved run defense—seriously?!?!
I have very little confidence in this coaching staff to improve anyone.
Let’s see what we do against Ekeler?
Go Packers!!!

You've been fully "Kiperized", i.e., a player coming out of college can easily make the transition to pro football. Wrong. The NFL game is a whole different animal.
Depending on the system, a player is asked to do different things.

From what I've seen he's played with hustle and is far from a bust.
