Packers Attend Konz's Workout

The Green Bay Packers reportedly had a representative in attendance at Wisconsin's second pro day on Wednesday, held primarily because offensive lineman Peter Konz had been recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the 2011 season.
"With approximately 12-15 NFL teams in attendance, including the Packers, Konz joined teammates Kevin Zeitler and Josh Oglesby in a brisk, hour-long workout," writes Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Coaches from the New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens administered the drills. Most eyes were probably on Konz, arguably the top center in this year's draft class. Konz missed three games with a dislocated ankle last year before gritting through the Rose Bowl against Oregon."
Konz put up 23 reps on the 225-pound bench press, an improvement over his 18 from the NFL Combine in February.
He did not run the 40-yard dash and is quoted as saying he was about "90%" healthy.
General manager Ted Thompson attended Wisconsin's first pro day back in early March.

I'll have to disagree with Clark Judge and Will Brinson at CBS, and say that the Packers will NOT pick Konz with GB's first round pick.
And while the Packer's first pick of the draft is important, I am of the opinion that the disposition of Collins is even more important.

Will they hammer out an altered contract, after one meeting?
Shouldn't this have gone down before the start of free agency?
"Decision will be made after that." -- sounds cut & dried, and not of the good-news variety.
I would have thought that some kind of good news would have been leaked by now.
I don't see the point of the multi-agent fanfare/travel-plans, if he was returning.
I sadly suspect we've lost a ProBowl safety...

If Collins got a bad report on Monday, I doubt he would have a meeting set up with all of the decision makers in GB.
However, a good report from the first doctor (I hope!!!) would mean that Collins now has to request a green light from the Packers staff. I'm crossing my fingers!

The meeting in Green Bay was planned before he even got the report, according to Mike McCarthy at the NFL's owners meeting two weeks ago.

I'm curious how much back lash Packers would get if Collins leaked that he's healthy and ready to play and turn around to find out that Packers won't let him play. Imagine the back lash that would ensue if we realeased him then and he goes on to have a Probowl caliber year.
My guess is he got good news from first doc and is meeting with Packer brass to confirm he is healthy enough!

I put his ability to return at 50/50. I put the Pack being receptive to hosting his permanently disabling injury at 0%. So overall, 5% chance he ever plays, no chance at Lambeau. The Pack did it for Sterling Sharpe; Terrance Murphy; Craig Newsome; Darrell Thompson (DE about 4 years ago?); and probably others. While they didn't all have the same etiology, the Pack IMO doesn't want to be on the wrong side of this decision and will release him if they have to. Watch him play in the playoffs? Ain't going to happen, but if it does, more power to him.
Also, the Pack (and me) don't like the concept of allowing his return, and then the second scrimmage he gets tingling in his extremities and decides to retire; leaving us with Peprah or MD Jennings ( whom I'm unaware of his potential) to start alongside Burnett. Tough spot.

Konz in rd 1 would be frustrating now, but *could* wind up being the right move in the long run. TT said in 2005 he was split over the decision to draft a CB (was it Fabian Washington???) or Rodgers. ty tt.
I'd would also point out that another title to this article could also be "Packers Attend One More Kevin Zietler Workout."

I was thinking the same thing. The Packers like their OL to be able to play multiple positions. Kevin Zeitler is a very good guard and an upgrade to EDS and Ray Dominguez. At the same time he could be tutored by one of the best C's in the game to take over for him next year.

I'm on board with Zeitler too. No need to spend a 1st on the OL again this year when the defense has so many holes. Better to pick up Zeitler later. I'm also not a fan of the Packers taking Konz in the first. Yes, he's probably the most NFL ready. But the consistent injury history is a big problem to me. The Packers need a steady at center - not a guy who misses games 3 out of 4 seasons.

Kevin Zeitler is moving up while Peter Konz has been slipping. There's a good chance that Zeitler gets drafted before Konz.
CBS Sports has Zeitler ranked 37th in the draft and a likely 1-2 round pick.
They have Konz ranked 49th in the draft and a likely 2nd round pick.
I doubt either gets drafted by TT. Lang, Saturday & Sitton won't be bumped in 2012. The "D" needs TT's full attention. (Please, no BPA follow-ups. BPA is a myth)
