Packers announce initial 53 man roster for 2018 season

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst will keep eight, yes, eight receivers on his first 53 man roster.

The Green Bay Packers were busy getting down to the mandatory number of 53 players for their regular season roster on Saturday. The deadline was 4pm EST, with the Packers sending out a press release roughly an hour later with the breakdown of the roster. I'll wait for the dust to settle.
Makes little sense - 8 WRs on the 53.
How many dress on game day?
Come Monday, there may be several changes, I'm thinking.
Don't get me wrong --- I still like Gute, (he's the antithesis of TT)

Possibly a young receiver will be shopped as trade-bait. Alternatively, it might be a way to minimise the chance of a valued WR getting picked up (one WR gets cut to allow Aaron Jones back in week 3).

This roster is extremely fluid. There are still hundreds of other players who have been cut that the Packers might try to add. And is it likely the team will carry eight WR's for long. Who will be "odd man out"? When Jones is available to return, expect there to be one less WR or TE. What will be interesting is the makeup of the PS.

-Ricky, yes I too read this as 2 extra weeks to evaluate the WR's and TE's, with one being dropped when Jones comes off suspension.

- Interesting\strategic use of IR Gute - it may be useful in 6 weeks time (when they become eligible).

- perhaps the only surprise to me was the extra QB, but I suspect that GB are just waiting to see who gets cut around the league before they try and stash their 3rd QB on PS (maybe).

I don’t think we can pull any back. To do that they would have to have been on an in season active roster. Being waived injured today means they never made it to the 53.

what he's done is make steady improvement since converting from WR to CB. I had him on the 53. He's still a developmental guy, but offered more upside than Goodson, Brown or Hawkins, I thought.

See the guys let go at CB is very good news.

One of those WRs has to go because they are way too light at RB, especially given Monty's injury history. They almost definitely are going to be adding another RB.

I was disappointed to see Donnerson cut, but then remembered we have Clay and Nick at OLB so we should see lots of him this year.

I forecast a trade of a WR for a RB. Maybe Biegel gets a year on the PS to transition inside?

Players like Crawford, Greene, Waters, Kumerow, Boyle, Light, Fackrell and Tonyan are all still on the bubble when it comes to final roster moves. Some of them won't even be active on game days if they're on the roster, some will be fill-ins if/when other players get injured.

Hopefully we won't have to see any of the above this season in actual game play (other than special teams). That would mean that the starters are able to stay healthy.

Guys like Kumerow/ESB, Tonyan, Davis, Looney, Pankey... It's players like these guys that could legitimately impact the season in 2018 that make me upset we're spending two roster spots on Back up QB's right out the gate.

I hope some of these guys get on/stay on the 53 and either Kizer or Boyle get released and signed to PS. (or not, I don't care if one of them gets exposed to waivers and picked up)

If Rodgers goes down, we need the strongest team around the QB- not more back up QB's- to give the Packers any chance to salvage a few wins.

Bearmeat,
this is exactly why the Packers should never keep three QB's on the 53 unless one is so special he's considered the future.

1. Starter (Rodgers) 2. Solid Back up (we don't even have it in 2018, so we have to make due) That's all. ONLY use a 3rd roster spot to protect a QB that has legit potential to be a franchise QB. I know one guy around here who will argue the Boyle is that special. I think the rest of us would say he probably isn't.

I always thought Jeff Janis being the tough physical receiver/special teams guy that he is was potentially one of those players capable of changing positions. I was thinking his best shot at playing time would be bulking up and converting to a tight end. Todd Christensen did that with the Raiders in the 80's and was one of the best of all time. Janis I thought could also transition but it looks like we'll never know.

If he couldn't run routes and didn't have a feel for the passing game at the NFL level as a WR, why would he as a non-blocking TE?

I still see him running clear down the sideline, having beaten a DB, and a beautiful ball dropping out of the sky and clanking off his facemask...

From what others are saying, it sounds like "stashing a guy on IR" has been limited in some way now where they must be on the active 53 before going to IR -IF- you want the ability to bring them back to play in the given year, which makes sense considering the new rules about bringing guys back from IR. Maybe that's why the Packers are keeping 8 out of the gates.

Tom Silverstein also reported that the Packers are supposedly trying to shop Trevor Davis, which, even as a Davis supporter, seems odd to me. I would find it unlikely that a ST player who didn't practice all training camp due to a hamstring injury and whose only action was the final preseason game (and looked like a guy who hasn't played/practiced all training camp) would garner much interest as a trade prospect. Shopping a guy at cut-downs is like asking the other 31 teams to call your bluff.. or not.

For the first 2weeks I can see them going with 2 RB's. If it comes down to it, Cobb can receive 5 -7 RB touches per game. That should be enough to spell Williams and Monty for 2 wks. The 8 LB's and 4 TE's actually has me more perplexed. The LB makeup actually looks more like a 4-3 except only 5 DL were kept. As far as the TE's go with no FB on the 53 usually a TE can play H-back if needed. I'm not sure any of the 4 is built for that. IN GUTEY WE TRUST!!!!

It's interesting to see so many opinions about players based on a few preseason games. The camera focuses the attention on the ball which makes it difficult to assess players' abilities not around the ball. Assuming every player has a role to play, those off camera can't be accurately measured.

Davis would be a solid guess for lack of practice, but then, I also assume he's probably as limber as he could be at this point, spending a lot of time in rehab.

I have a guess as to who would be most likely to get injured on the opener.. but there's no way I want to jinx it. That'd be way too big of an injury. Can't have that hanging over my head : ^|

Keeping 8 WRs and only 2 RBs is a surprise for me but we'll probably see a few more changes over the weekend. Looks like a pretty solid 53 to me. OL Alex Light came out of nowhere to me.

Jonathan Spader sorry about Day and Hawkins but I saw more upside with Bell and Waters and apparently the coaches did as well. Hopefully neither is required to make a major contribution. Also, maybe Day and Hawkins make it to the practice squad.

Since 61' I didn't think Hawkins or Waters did much in preseason. I hope Waters develops into a decent CB. For Day I thought he showed the most at backup center. Makes me wonder who the Packers start as a center now if Linsley goes down.

I still think Bell was the worst decision Gute has made in his time as GM. I see 0 upside in a player on his 3rd time 3 years with a terrible preseason. With his experience I don't see him getting better unlike the younger OL he was competing with.

I agree that if the Packers are down to Bell or Waters we're in trouble. Hopefully waters can contribute on STs. I'd like to see Day on the PS. I'd cut Hawkins who has had time to develop on the PS already and move onto someone else with more upside.

Since 61' always appreciate the back and forth you're a class act. Because Bell and Day are interchangeable I'd rather have a younger player with a lower cap hit. TGR has suggested that the half a mil guaranteed signing bonus of Bell put him on the roster and he was right.

Once Jones is back from suspension I can't see the Packers keeping 8 receivers. And maybe the Packers pick up an OL off waivers and only keep 3 TE's. For sure this isn't the final 53. The practice squad will be interesting to see develop over the next couple of weeks. I am a little surprised at some moves. Keeping Fackrell and Crawford and releasing Thomas, Donnerson, and/or Martini was one of them. Perhaps once everything settles down after waivers things will fall into place and make more sense, For sure with the Bears signing Mack the NFC North will be more competitive. Will be an interesting season. I'm still sticking with the Packers to win the NFC North regardless. Go! Pack! Go!

I think Pace has demonstrated he's out of his depth running that team.

“Run game? We don’t need no stinking run game”! Line up in four receiver sets all the time. Maybe even four tight ends. Or two quarterbacks in a wildcat. We have the players for it now.

Be careful what you wish for. The league might be closer to that than we want to believe.

Well we used to do 5 receiver sets regularly a few years back. With Monty in a swing role we are well set up for a 1RB and blend of 4 TE/WRs, one of whom could even play as an H back. Rodgers calling the combination at the line. That will keep teams guessing.

I'd love to take bets on who is cut when Jones comes back in week 2. I'd put my money on whitehead, greene, or Crawford. Injuries pending of course.

Someone at the bottom of the roster will suddenly be stricken with a nasty hangnail, yes.

Light and Crawford.= No way. I would have kept Rip first. But the thing that was outstanding is keeping all the WRs. Game Time and we get to see who A-Rod chooses now. With 8 Wrs; it's a sure bet Cobb ,Allison and Davis better get their act together. Go Long A-ROD! After Adams improvement, they all are being given a chance. Moss ,Moss, Moss. He should have been Canned. The LBs are a revolving Door.

Rip was a favorite of mine. Thought he was going to be good. Last year he seemed like a shell of himself as a blocker, protector, runner and passing outlet, and continued that way in camp. He did not justify a roster spot. Sad but the way it turned out.

It just occurred to me that there's now only one player from the 2015 draft still on the active roster - Ty Montgomery......with Jake Ryan on IR.

Just for 2 games until Aaron Jones returns for his suspension. Then look for one receiver to be cut to make room for him. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the TE's are used in the backfield on occasion, or even a WR.

Excellent. This is very close to my 'I would keep list. Have doubts on fackrell...but guess they had to keep a body. Hope they shop TDavis for an on or olineman.

For months now, we've all debated feverishly over which receivers should be kept.

Turns out we were all right.

No, I'm very sure I was right. I just spent all night going through and editing 2 months of comments.

Nailed it.
