Packers' Allison disregards other offers, inks new one-year deal in Green Bay

One of Aaron Rodgers' most trusted targets: Geronimo Allison isn't going anywhere after agreeing to a newly-structured contract that will keep him with the Packers for a year.

-- The Green Bay Packers already made it a point to retain Geronimo Allison, issuing an original-round tender on Wednesday to keep the undrafted wide receiver in town for 2019.

But that $2.025 million dollar tender gives other teams the opportunity to pursue Allison, an unrestricted free agent. On Friday, the Packers had to fight a few of them off -- but not for very long.

Several teams prepared offer sheets to swipe Allison, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, with which the Packers would be given a certain number of days to match. But the Packers heightened the initial original-round tender they offered him earlier in the week and constructed a new, one-year deal with additional incentives.

Undrafted in 2016, Allison ascended into a training camp star before eventually contributing in his rookie season. He found a way to gain the trust of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and sculpted himself into one of his primary receiving targets.

Allison was on pace for a 1,000-yard season in 2018 before a barrage of injuries ultimately landed him on injured reserve. Whether it was a concussion, a hamstring or the torn adductor that did him in, Allison fought through but only played in five games.

Those five games were enough evidence for the Packers to keep Allison in their plans moving forward, however, it could eliminate the possibility of a return for fellow receiver Randall Cobb.

Allison agreed to the terms of his new contract without fielding any offers from any of the other interested teams, essentially confirming his desire to remain in Green Bay for as long as he has the power to, calling the city "his home."

"If it was up to me, I would want to be here and stay consistent here throughout my career," he told Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "But, just going over the years, I understand I have a strong faith and a strong work ethic and my talent, my production; that playing in this league is all about mental toughness and then production."

Allison by all accounts seems to be a quality citizen and teammate . Packers should have stepped up with the better offer from the go. His connection with Rodgers is apparent. Glad he stayed and hope he has a monster year. GO PACK!!

The bashing of Allison was his speed and draft status. He's got a great ability to find the open spot in zone coverage. His hands have really improved.

Cap friendly while you can. Buys time for him to show he is over his injury, fits the new system and also for more information on his peers. Those are my guesses as to why

Going into camp last year over half the posters wanted him cut and still do I'd bet. All caught up on his 40 time and draft status instead of his skill set. I find it typical of most fans to sit around and worry about what a player can't do as opposed to what does he do well. If you go back and look at old posts here and elsewhere more people believed Kentrell Brice was a better player than Allison based solely on their pro day testing and were OK with Brice starting but wanted Allison cut to make room for someone speedier.

Acquit me of thinking Brice was better than anything other than an inanimate object.

Guilty on Allison. Part of it was that I didn't think he was a good complement to Davante. If Adams had been burner I'd have been more interested in Allison. I am still not a giant backer of Allison. Should be a #3 WR.

I understand exactly what you're saying TGR, but with so many 3 & 4 wr sets in the NFL today it ok to get that speedburner somewhere other than your top two wide outs. My thinking is that if you're going to be a 3rd or 4th receiver you better be good at something or at least be able to take the top of a defense, if you can't as a 3rd wr then you're just a decoy more or less. The TE position can alleviate some of that as well as wr's 3 & 4. What I like about G-mo is that the game was never too big for him, he came right in and not only earned Rodgers trust as an UDFA but also made plays in the game despite his reported physical limitations and draft status. As long as he keeps getting open for first downs and beating CB's deep for TD's I'm not going to worry one bit about his track speed. He's really is a football player more so than an athlete. I bet Lombardi would've absolutely loved G-Mo.

He seems to play smart. Knowing where to be on precise routes. We have fast receivers who are running faster than it appears because they are striders. But, it would be nice to have the shorter quick twitch guys that can literally fly- oh and catch the ball. They can really stretch the field.

If a player can get it done, it doesn’t matter how. He keeps finding a way to be clutch. You don’t let that go.

This is simply my opinion.

A good coach needs to constantly assess talent on his team. Each players strengths and weaknesses and how they line up with others players currently on the team.

LF should move Adam's with marginal speed to the slot. He would see significant more action, receptions, and yardage. Get your best offensive players in position to touch the ball as often as you can. The other very positive aspect of making this move is letting all the other WR's play. St. Brown, MVS, Geronimo, Moore can all play and flourish. Big and mostly fast players. Even without the draft moving Adam's to slot would be a significant upgrade to the offense. Would also eliminate need to draft a slot guy.

BTW, Allison is a better player than many think. Good route runner who gets open and a great safety net for Rodgers. Being hurt last year was a blessing for the Pack in terms of this year giving St. Brown and MVS a chance to grow and experience the NFL. Now the 3 of them are on equal footing heading into camp. With one move ML upgrades his offense. Hope he thinks about it!

you can't argue about his production and in my mind that's what its all about especially when he catches almost everything thrown his way. i was always in his corner but then again i like to see these guys develop and not judge them too harshly in their first 3 years as long as they are improving. i thought it was funny when the hordes were wanting to cut Adams after his injury riddled sophomore year and then dismissing Allison being a #2 or even making the roster last year.

This is very smart of Allison. He already has a great connection with Rodgers, and can expect a lot of passes thrown his way and a lot of receptions in 2019. Assuming he stays healthy and puts up good numbers (e.g., 1,000+ yards and several touchdowns), he'll be in line for a big multi-year contract from the Packers going forward.

On the other hand, if he went to another team he'd have to learn a whole new system and develop a new relationship with their quarterback (who almost by definition would be far inferior to Rodgers). The result would probably be a mediocre year for Allison (in the worst case even getting cut) and no big multi-year contract in 2020.

So this decision was really a no-brainer.

I agree with everything you said... but I'd like to point out that EVERY Packer on the offensive side of the ball is learning a new system this year. We are paying Gmo for his connection with Arod.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but hopefully LaF will design routes that are easier for the WRs to run and easier for Arod to get them the ball.

Not only his connection with Rogers, but once players land in Green Bay, for the most part, they seem to like it there. I think it’s an exciting time to be not only a fan of the Packers, but so much more to be a player. Also many players come back to retire as a Packer. That means a lot.

A one year deal for Allison is a good move at this point. If he has a big season the Packers can sign him for a longer term. If not we just move on.

When he’s healthy he has been a reliable receiver. Always good to retain solid depth at the WR position group. Thanks, Since ‘61

Clear #1 in Adams.

Much promise from G'mo, St. Brown, Valdes-Scantling

Anxious to see what Kumerow, Moore, Lazard can do

Lots of youth and speed, but what will happen in a new (ML) offense? IMO that with ML schemes and a healthy #12 this WR group will shine.

i see no reason to keep Davis. he was hurt almost all of last year and the only thing he has shown is a little punt return shake and bake. i expect Gute to add a fast slot receiver in the draft that could return punts. McLaurin, Isabella, Campbell, Samuel, Brown. and yes, i could see 7 receivers on the roster again.

Hate to say it, injury and Davis. It is why I don’t think you will see a high draft WR unless something shocking happens. It’s also why I would not be shocked to see us draft return skills at done point.

In reality, Davis’s position is returner. His replacement may be a RB, CB, safety or wherever. That leaves six excluding returner. I could see us keeping six given the youth there and supposedly varied uses to exploit individual strengths.

Davis is gone has been a disappointment and doesn’t bring anything to the table. No big returns last year. No value as a receiver. Moore will shock people he is working his butt to refine his route running and catching the ball clean. He will be a 4-5 option as a receiver.

Excellent take Rick F. I agree. I think out of all the receivers drafted last year, Moore is the most talented. He has a way of creating separation that others couldn't duplicate. He had separated several times in the preseason during the time Boyle was playing. Several precision strikes by Boyle on the dime and in stride for huge scores were not to be due to his drops. If he can catch the ball and not think he's easily on the roster. I would take him easily over Geronimo. The problem is, will Aaron Rodgers. He has very little patience with these receivers.

He didnt get a lot of chances in regular season play precisely because of said drops, but he did get open against pre-season competition.

Thanks JohnBlood. No doubt Nick Perry, Coldworld and Sully never watched a single preseason game. They get their news on Twitter or Facebook probably. There are guys like Rick F,, John Blood and yes Dash Riprock that actually watched the preseason games and saw J'Mon Moore stand out in terms of separation. I watched every play because Tim Boyle was the qb when Moore was getting separation constantly BUT dropping the damn ball. Pissed me off so yes, I know all about J'Mon good and bad. It's why I referred to him as Shame On Moore early on. He made Boyle look bad and Boyle would have been the star of the entire preseason had Moore caught those perfectly thrown long balls for td's.

Again, having said that. he was the first receiver drafted so the scouts and I agree that he was the most physically gifted of them all on paper. I have extremely high hopes for him. Much more than this Geronimo Allison.

Dash...I didn't watch every snap of every preseason game so I can only go by what I saw. Now since I live in Los Angeles I don't have the luxury of watching the Packers play unless it's a nationally televised game in the preseason. I watch preseason games when the NFL Network gets around to showing them which is normally 12 to 24 hours later. During the regular season I watch EVERY Packers game because I've purchased Sunday Ticket every season since 1999 I believe it was.

Having said all that I can honestly say with 100% certainly I've NEVER obtained ANY information about the Packers or ANY NFL team from Twitter. Now you now what they say when you assume... You make an ass out of you and me. Except in this case just yourself once again.

The acts are Moore couldn't get on the field when it mattered. Who gives a flying F if the guy gains separation if he's dropping the ball? I'll even go out on a limb here and say Allison has 5 times the season Moore will have. I hope I'm wrong and all the hard work Moore has put in this offseason pays off. But until he does it against STARTING NFL CB's and not guys who aren't even on a practice squad you're just doing what you always do....Talking out of the side of your neck.

Allison does seem to really like it in GB. Yes, he probably could have gotten more money for 2019 from another team. But he also bet on himself to have a good year, and the most likely place for that to happen is in GB with modest competition at WR and a QB that likes him and will look his way. Then he can get nice money as a FA in 2020 on a multi-year deal.

With so many young and promising receivers trying to find a place aside Davante, it seems one could set himself apart if he can excel in the slot.
Actually, as put forth before, maybe Davante could be that guy with his outstanding quickness and shiftiness.
He may like it there, too, as the slot seems to get the most action.
Then again, maybe Geronimo in the slot if he's not exactly a speed burner, but has a knack for finding openings in the defense and moving the chains.
In any case, I appreciate Geronimo wanting to be a Packer. Hope he has a good long run here. All the best to him.

IDK my friend, who on the team would have made that diving catch last year to kick off that run. It was the highlight reel of the year and without it we probably don't win the Chicago game. He arguably has the best football hands on the team and I define football hands by by having the ability to catch a ball with a defender all over you. He's good at that, has great focus. These new receivers haven't proven anything yet. Geronimo Allison, he just catches clutch footballs and knows how to get open. After Adams there is no one, we now have a proven commodity teams will need to account for or he'll burn you. His addition makes Devante better and more dangerous.

Camp Bodies. OK. We have money. But was this club better with them? NO. Both Lewis and Allison have trouble with separation. Not Zones. We know what they are! Their ceiling has been reached. It makes it tough on the others that were drafted to get reps. Teacher pets don't work for me. In the big games they always seem to fail. Why is Allison better then James Jones was? They cut Jones. The difference was MONEY. Allison and Lewis may know how to block. But their not the future. Common be fair here. If Adams got time to show the type of athlete he was. Don't Moore, St.Brown, and MVS deserve more of a chance. The Roster spots available should not be taken up with Pets. Weaker opponents can throw problems in the evaluation of players. How many have gone threw a pre-season and looked like a future All-pro. Only to be a No show during the season. I feel Adams set the Bar now. Give the kids the reps.

Solid move! He had a hiccup early on, owned that mistake and worked hard to establish a trust with Aaron by running crisp routes and making the catch. He started last year on fire and was looking to make that leap everyone looks for. I've grown tired of those who say cut him for this or that reason, it is usually the oh he is always injured line. Short memories I guess of calling for the same stuff with Jones, and Devante and others who took a few years to get past some drops and injury issues. So now it is cut King, he can't stay healthy, just get rid of Moore he can't catch the ball, and G-Mo just doesn't excite me and he is being rewarded for having been injured. Sit back and enjoy watching what they can become as they mature as players and learn their skill at this level!

I would hate to have GB slow down the development of their your receivers by having to be behind him. I would like to see a slot receiver drafted and a good outside receiver if one a value at the time of the pick

In his five games he was producing, and he had a down game in the 2nd game but still not awful if you take out 5 misses, which not going back could have been on Aaron, it was the week after he injured the knee. Nobody is saying to hold back the young guys if they turn it on, but to not have a guy out there who was producing, and had earned Aarons trust, well that isn't sound coaching or management. If others pass him so be it, but relying on other rookies and last years group to all suddenly have that connection with the QB is unrealistic.

I was hoping Allison would return to Green Bay. I believe he has good ball handling skills. He has good hands. He may not be the fastest guy on the team but he knows how to get open and can get those extra yards after the catch. And has a chemistry with Rodgers. He will do well if he can stay healthy. The receivers on the Packers are very talented. It's good to see Allison back in Green Bay to add to that talented list.
