Packers 25 Titans 47: Game Balls & Lame Calls

I'm doing this piece this week because it's part of our rotation and because you come here for it but I make no apologies for the major lack of content.  After all, I had to sit through yesterday afternoon's lack of. . everything.

Game Balls

None

Not a single player or individual on or associated with the Packers deserves any accolades today.  This team is in some serious trouble from top to bottom.  Say what you will about finally putting up some points but this Packers team can't be trusted to beat anyone right now.

In Reality, Davante Adams

Good effort and he's on this list after standing up for his quarterback following the hit on Aaron Rodgers' touchdown run.  Truly the only bright spot of the day.

Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers

This team couldn't have put together a worse effort when they needed something, anything, to make something of this season.  A special lame call to Mike McCarthy for not getting this team up to play a game.  The discussion about changes that need to be made in Green Bay got a ton of fuel dumped on them with this performance.  At this point, they're all at worth being heard.

On a related, but little known sidenote, Mike McCarthy flew to Phoenix International Raceway immediately following the game.

Upon his arrival, he coached up Matt Kenseth to turn into the side of Alex Bowman's #88 with 2 laps to go, thereby ensuring his elimination from the NASCAR championship.

12 penalties and MM said they had a lot of fight! They had very little fight and a lot of pique. Undisciplined and a result of poor coaching. Someone has said "you're either coaching it or allowing it". This is the poop show we get to watch for 7 more games.

12 penalties yes... But those officials were terrible.

The one play that stands out is when Clinton-Dix jumps around gets the offense to move and they call a penalty on the defense. Problem with that was Clinton-Dix didn't jump offsides.

Well it looks like you are not allowed to provoke false start penalty... That was explanation from the resporters. I'm confused. So, offense have the right to provoke offsides, incrochements or neutral zone Infraction, but defense are not allowed to do that? Well, very tricky!

I know they can't jump offsides, but they can't move around or anything to provoke the offense?
I heard that from the reporters, but half the time I take what they say with a grain of salt... They don't always know what they are talking about.

On Mike & Mike this morning the Packers were brought up this morning and the obvious was stated "Something's going on behind closed doors in Green Bay". All season long Rodgers drops back to pass and almost immediately starts to run/scramble, most times before he even needs to.

When is the last time Rodgers "Stood Tall in the Pocket", knowing he was going to get hit but stood there to make the pass to the receiver streaking open? How about at least 1 1/2 years ago, hell I can't even remember it's been so long. Instead he begins to run, misses his chance to hit the streaking receiver, and then points fingers at EVERYBODY but himself.

The Defense is a complete joke. Capers needs to step down..This Morning!! They've played TWO teams with what would be described as teams that run the ball well. Each time they were shredded, so the Run Defense really isn't worth a damn either.

The Players are frustrated with McCarthy. The Coaches are frustrated with Ted Thompson. Thompson doesn't talk during the regular season because he'd have to answer questions about WHY his coaches have to play with nothing but HIS draft picks and HIS UDFA. Mark Murphy probably doesn't even know his team sucks. He's too busy with "Titletown" and since Packers Fans love their team no matter what, the money keeps flowing in. There's just SO MUCH wrong with this team, it's impossible to do it in less than 20,000 characters.

Right now the whole Packers Organization is a "Lame Call"

"Thompson doesn't talk during the regular season"

This is total BS! He's not even going to stand up there and take questions about his role. If he's not going to take questions he needs to step back to direct college scouting. Can you imagine Ron Wolfe, John Hammond, or David Stearns hiding all season long. It never happens.

Why does Mark Murphy allow it?

Game Balls: Davante Adams. Adams has really stepped up and played well. He is truly becoming a legit top target.

Lame Calls: Where to start?
Well first things first. This team is simply not the same due to the amount of injuries they have had. No one wants to make excuses because of injuries but the truth is, this team is injured to much at critical spots that they can't overcome them. The key injuries that have killed this team are Lacy, Shields, Randall and Mathews. Those 4 injuries alone have really changed this team. Yesterday then they sustain 3 more injuries that changed the game. They lost Jake Ryan, their best Run defender. TJ Lang and Bakhtiari their best 2 OL.

The failure of Thompson and McCarthy doesn't go unnoticed and they deserve the crap they will now get.
Thompson - has failed to provide the team enough players or get insurance for other players. I don't blame him for not having more depth at CB. Not many teams can play half their season without their top 3 CB's. But keeping 2 starting RB's? And go into another game with 1 RB who isn't healthy. That was a critical mistake. We need a GM that is willing to go out and make a move when we need it made.

McCarthy - has failed to simply use what he has to work with. His schemes have become stale, very predictable and its time for a change offensively. When he finds something that works he routinely goes away from it. Against Atlanta they spread the defense out with 5 WR's. And it worked. They came up with some different looks and it worked. Since halftime of that game to this game he has shifted back to the same offense that has struggled.

Capers - Does he become the sacrificial lamb?

This is a move that I could see happening to try and save the season. Perhaps it would inject life into the team. While its not completely Capers fault, (playing without your top 2 CBs, top pass rusher, top run stopper in the last game), Capers might be on his last legs in Green Bay. Perhaps if they fired him now, it would give someone younger who the players respect some added juice.

There was an interesting article on NFL.Com this morning where Michael Silver actually wrote about Thompson deserving much of the blame and the Packers coaches being frustrated with the lack of talent thompson provides his team

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000739243/article/packers-loss-has-...

I really hope this regime isn't given another year after this. We have 19 games and counting, it's not getting better, and it won't until changes are made.

"We have 21 personnel groups in our game plan," McCarthy said, shaking his head for emphasis. "Twenty-one! I've gone into games with a lot of personnel combinations, but I don't ever think I've done that before. But hey, that's where we are right now. It’s on all of us to find a way to get it done."

Ok great, they have 21 personnel groups... They used what 3?

Thompson does deserve blame. But McCarthy simply hasn't done enough with what he does have. McCarthy has not adjusted to the players he does have. I really do believe that we would see a much better offense if we had someone else in there.
Ty Montgomery has been one of the biggest play makers the last few weeks. He is a guy who has to touch the ball 10 times a game. And how much was he actually on the field? He was on the field for 22 plays, out of 78. Why?

There definitely need to be changes made.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers either fire Capers or force him to resign. It's a move that would shake things up, sure. But the problem is: who becomes your DC? Seems like the only one on the staff with DC experience is Trgovac.

A new DC would inherit the star studded cast that didn't win many one-on-ones yesterday. This defense was built on a strong man coverage secondary and getting after the passer. Haven't seen that in a while and probably won't until we get some players.

I'm not saying it will happen and odds are that it won't. Just wondering if it will happen.

If they were to do it I wonder if they would give one of the younger guys a shot. Moss, Perry, Whitt?
I heard yesterday that Moss got on the defense and after that they did player better, at least compared to the first quarter? Perhaps the team would respond to a younger guy calling the shots?

What's interesting about Montgomery is he was described as "A big part of what we do" BY McCarthy. WTF!!!! Amazing such a "Big Part" is only on the field for 22 plays. If you stick him in the backfield, give him actual touches during the game the kid will produce.

Although we all know that nothing if anything will change until after the season it cannot come soon enough, after watching that team sleepwalk through another game was nothing short of pathetic, MM has lost this team,AR has lost the offense and injuries or not that defense is simply terrible, this is just a poor football team that lacks motivation ,coaching and direction, lame is the only way to describe what this team has become, what started out as a season to look forward to has quickly become a major dissapointment, all the optimism on earth will not change the fact that this team is not capable of suddenly turning the season around. They have a QB that since last year checked out,a coach that is clueless and a GM who in the last 4 years has failed miserably to provide any talent and a President who's only interest is the Titletown District, it took decades but I'm afraid that dark ages have set in GB.

All we need is the right coach and everything can turn around. For those who don't believe that, look how quickly Jim Harbaugh took a terrible 49ers team and made into an immediate contender. The same can be said with Pete Carroll in Seattle and Bruce Arians in Phoenix.

Mike McCarthy has lost his quarterback and this team. If TT or Wolf can find the right HC, I believe this team has all the talent it needs to be right back in the hunt for another Lombardi Trophy.

Tell me, if you hire Tom Coughlin, do you really thinks that he would not bench down Aaron Rodgers because of his behaviour and bad playing? Do you really think that coach of that integrity will not tell Aaron that before any season he has to practice in TC and play pre season games? He can play diva with Mike McCarthy and Tom Clements, but not with any other coach who would come from outside. People in the business knows always much more than fans...

Embarrassing is about the best word for the game. The worst part for me is the realization that my Packers are no longer part of the top tier teams. Watching your team drop into the average grouping is painful. Regardless of injuries, the talent and mojo of this team is no better than all those average teams who beat us this year.

On the plus side, I got my lawn done yesterday.

Wow, everyone's words ring loudly in their comments and I agree with them. I've been screaming for Thompson's head since before the 2010 Superbowl victory., but there was still enough veterans on that team to step it up. Other than 2010, when has McPuffy able to get his teams up for 'the big game', NEVER, he couldn't do it with Favre and he can't do it now! Since then Albino Ted has gone with 'his guys', gotten rid of a lot of veterans (Sitton didn't like what we're seeing now), he's refused to trade up (ala Belicheck) to get 'that guy' that could change a team, and then handed it all to McPuffy who should be coaching pee-wee soccer while Ted hides and Murphy play politico with team money. The entire organization is in shambles and someone needs to step up and clean house. Please God, tell me the Board of Directors is listening!

Not since 2008 have the Packers been as bad as they have since week 8 of last year. And that was IMO only because they didn't have a training camp - they had the summer of Favre. So really, we're talking about 2005 here. Or maybe even 99.

Including playoffs, the current Packers have played 3 halfway decent games against a quality opponent out of the past 21!

The time with TT and MM has run its course. I am not ever happy when GB loses. But if losing now means TT and MM and the entire coaching staff are let go, that's ok by me. You don't curse at the surgeon for making a cut that hurts. You thank him for taking out the cancer or mending a bone.

It doesn't matter as each would be an interim only. It would d also help to lose out the season and get a top 10 pick. Does it sound wrong...yes...but no more wrong than what has been done to the team and fans. Blow it up means blow it up.
Two Hall of Fame QB ' S over 24 years and the results are not going to improve. The greatest waste of talent in the history of the NFL.
Many got wgat was their just desserts....misguided, excuse accepted worship and hope of wrong players, bad coaches and the end result of one SB and blind eyes to the decline in play and management since 2011 season of offense.

I think we all hurt. ALso, I think partially it is like that because we all knows a lot about Packers and team and players, but much less about opponents. And we are tending to judge the opponent towards passed seasons. This season Titans are much better team when we are comparing them with last season!
I agree that this is not excuse, just trying to get right perspective.
For me it is not loss why I feel Packers embarrassed themselves, it is the level they played, and that has a very little withz their opponents!
So, as I said, NOBODY IS LARGER THAN FRANCHIZE! Not TT, not MM, not AR. Maybe only fans are!

Tell ya what Croat, I'd be ALL IN on McDaniels. I almost think he'd consider the Packers since they have Rodgers and he's stills got say 5 years or more of great to good enough play. McDaniels will attack a team's weakness EVERY TIME. McCarthy doesn't even know what the opponents is heading into a game, he's worried about "Fundamentals".

Changes can be made in-season!

Retire Ted today and promote Elliot. Let him start to make some player changes. Ask MM to resign before the end of the season (to avoid any last minute change of heart). These would be huge steps in the right direction.

There are a lot of specific issues and problems that could be noted, but the bottom line is that this team has not improved since 2010 and the disappointment and embarrassment is growing every week.

Counter arguments - don't make the season worse - we might win the NFC north and make the playoffs! Could get hot in the playoffs - look at 2010! On any given Sunday! It's a long season! Draft and develop! In Ted we trust! Loyal Packer fan! Really!

I need to comment about Mark Murphy.

We all know that he reports to a board of directors. Can you guess what are the priorities of the board?

#1 The image of the Packers
#2 Cash in the bank
#3 Competitive team
#4 Make the playoffs
#5 Win championships (wow #6)

The last thing that any board wants to deal with is a mess and bad press caused by any member of the organization. (Oops we might be getting there with MM and TT)

Next is financial trouble. (Oops - poor performance might bring this down)

Next is a losing record. (Oops - team is headed in this direction)

Would they ever admit that this is the order of priorities - hell no. They would probably quote Lombardi - winning is the only thing.

So this is what Murphy has to deal with - but he should man up and do the right thing for the team.

Winning improves everything - image, cash flow, morale!

Just don't draft and develop thugs & criminals.

Good luck Mr. Murphy!

Dear Mr. Murphy,

What do you want your Packer legacy to be?

Imagine that you are sitting at the Thanksgiving table 20 years from now with your wonderful family. One of your grandchildren asks you to tell them about the Packers.

You tell them how many times they made the playoffs, sold stock to the public, developed a real estate empire and so on. But what about winning championships your grandson asks.

You look down at the turkey bones on your plate and murmur one. JUST ONE your granddaughter exclaims in surprise and amazement!

How many years were you the president your son-in-law asks. Again, looking down at the bones, 22 years.

Didn't you have Aaron Rodgers for most of those years your daughter-in-law asks. Again the bones, yes.

When you look up your family has moved away from the table and only your wife is sitting there with your granddaughter on her lap.

You did the best you could honey!

Good luck Mr. Murphy

Agree with honorable mention Game Ball for Adams for defending Rodgers on late hit, plus Adams had a good game from what I can tell.
Lame Call: Entire game and effort, especially by Packers defense. Too many big plays. Titans gobbled up huge chunks of yards on long drives. They had 75 yard drives that used less time than the Packers 3 and outs. The entire team but particularly the coaches should be totally embarrassed by the effort their team, especially the defense and special teams which were just awful and non-competitive for the third week in a row. Thanks, Since '61

Nothing is happening during the season. MM continues trying to put a square peg into a round hole. TT makes no moves, if only because now the FA well is dry. Mark Murphy doesn't tarnish the image.

I'd imagine that McCarthy, his coaching staff, and Thompson are shown the door the day after the final game of the season. Eliot Wolf gets the GM nod, and the GB head coaching job becomes one of the most coveted in all sports.

No - Game Balls or reality either. Your Hope of De-Vante Adams still is not mine. We need to dump the whole WR class of 2014. period. Janis and R - Rodgers still need to be replaced. They both have taken a step back . Why? Because of the competition in front of them. I say they are only going through the motions and have had their heart taken out. (Just pay me and I'll play elsewhere) Now you and others have said Adams turned the corner. But it is obvious to me Adams is a A-Rod favorite. If you think this guy is the future, your messed up just as much as A-rod. Why should he stay on the team? Tell me why? He dropped balls for three years. And if A-rod leaves he's not going to help the next guy either until he see's "WHATS IN IT FOR HIM"! He's still a piss poor route runner. We need change at WR. Adams has wrecked this position. If he can get away with it. I can will be the WR call. Has Adams earned your Respect? Respect it shown on coverage and results. Not drops or wrecking a QB first. And now A-rod only has himself to blame. When you look to one guy, you lose. Stafford and megatron taught that with the Lions. And Adams will never be mega- tron.

But you can replace Capers.
There are a number of candidates that could replace him. Basically anyone on the defensive coaching staff could. I just wonder if a younger guy would provide the energy and could connect better with the younger players.

As long as the Titletown District makes a zillion $$ and their is a 25 year waiting list for season tickets, where is the pressure to change? Remember people this is the same trio that said bye bye to Woodson and Favre much to the chagrin of a large % of fans. I've also noticed that the unrest over lack of diving into FA has really caused a fundamental change in TT's thinking. The rants from "play calling guy" and "clock management guy" have had profound affect on MM. Status Quo until TT/MM contracts are up in 2018. Hel,l win 8 games this year and we'll probably be offered another 10,000 pieces of "OWNERSHIP"

He's lost this team and TT/MM are being exposed now that AR is not playing at an MVP level.

I have a simple question... how does the coach get the players "up" for this game , or any game for that matter... I thought the players get paid millions to get themselves "up"... I think it's on them to do so... or else get rid of them...

on the other hand... MM and TT and DC are NOT doing their respective jobs... AT ALL!... But then again ... many of the "athletes" aren't either.... IMHO

Fair point. Yes there is plenty of blame to go around. Lack of talent, bad coaching, undisciplined players. But it all begins and ends with TT and MM.

I don't blame Capers. Subtracting for injuries, there just isn't enough available talent left to defend a pretty good NFL offense.

This team clearly isn't where it would be if privately owned. Depending on the owner, we could be sucking every year, much like the Bears. Or, we could be kicking butt every year, much like NE.

Regardless, our spurt of 'bad play' has only been a little over a year. For a lot of teams, a coach gets at least two bad years before getting canned. And that is usually his first two to three years, not long into his tenure.

We see obvious problems, and now that they have persisted over a year now (not counting playoff blunders here, only regular season play), other things, like the playoff losses are starting to come more into focus. They are not merely aberrations, in an otherwise stellar record, but rather marker beacons along a familiar route.

We are kind of in a difficult time right now. GB really hasn't experienced this kind of melt down in quite some time, I would be interested in seeing if the current regime can turn it around or now. Any HC we might want to hire won't be available until after the season anyway so why can MM now. Let it ride and see what happens.

At the end of the year, however, if I'm Mark Murphy, I approach TT about retiring. I would want new energy in that position and EW may not survive the off season in GB this year. I start here, before HC. Let EW get his man and if he thinks he can work with MM, so be it. Give him a shot. If not, bring in his own guy and get this going in a different direction.
