Packers 34 Cowboys 24: Game Balls & Lame Calls

4-1 and a Victory Monday feels pretty good, doesn't it?!

The Green Bay Packers remain undefeated against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.  A huge road win with a shorthanded roster and a great job by head coach Matt LaFleur getting his team up for the task.

It wasn't pretty but road wins rarely are.  The Packers continue to lead the NFC North at 4-1 and return home for the next two games, the first of which is next Monday night against the Detroit Lions.

Here were the day's best and not-so-best.

Game Balls

Aaron Jones

Jones finally got loose, finding the end zone twice in the first quarter and two more in the second half.  He racked up 107 yards on the ground and another 75 through the air.

It was a monster day for Jones but the touchdown run with the wave at the defender was possibly the best single play this team has had all season.

Lucas Patrick

Patrick came in early in place of Corey Linsley and I didn't hear his name all day.  That's a rather effective way to fill in for a starter.

Matt LaFleur

This week's game was LaFleur's first opportunity to get his team ready after facing some adversity and for a big game on the road.  Losing a huge lead wasn't the greatest look but the Packers didn't come out like a team that was missing several key starters.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers made some key throws and the offense kept drives alive.  The early lead took Ezekiel Elliott out of play early and made Dallas have to throw to win.

These last two games, Rodgers is also moving around and running better than he has in a year.  Fewer sacks taken and he's back to being a danger with his feet.  Climbing the pocket was a sight for sore eyes and the efficiency of the short passing game was key.

Rodgers has accomplished many things in his long career but in this game, he checked off "complete a pass left handed".

Another win in Dallas for #12.

Za'Darius Smith

Smith had two sacks and and might as well have had a few more as he clearly got inside the head of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.  Smith had a few penalties on the day but he walked the talk and brought the toughness.

Former Hall of Famer Ray Lewis said earlier this week that the Packers front seven was lacking something.  Smith responded by doing Lewis's own dance after a big third down sack early in the game.

Z has become the clear heart and soul leader of this defense and hopefully won't have to miss any time due to an apparent knee injury that had him out and back in on a few occasions.

Will Redmond & Chandon Sullivan

Will Redmond, after struggling against the Eagles last week, showed up big in this game with a huge special teams tackle and nearly had an interception in the end zone that was negated by penalty.

Chandon Sullivan also had a nice interception earlier in the game and showed up big when he got his chances.

The performance of these two was exactly what the doctor ordered to negate the loss of Tony Brown and with a less-than-100% Kevin King.

Lame Calls

Jaire Alexander

It's Amari Cooper, who is a really good receiver, but Alexander got beat way too much and didn't tackle well.  He's capable of better, so he lands on this list as the result of the high bar that he's set for himself.

The 1st and Goal Packers Offense That Doesn't Find the End Zone

The Packers have to find ways to get in the end zone when they get down in this space.  They did in the third quarter

Kick Coverage

They end up here for the second week in a row.  Last week, kicker Mason Crosby had to make a tackle.  In this game, Crosby had to make another and was hurt on the play.  Fortunately, he was able to recover and kick the rest of the game, but that could have ended up a catastrophic injury for the Packers.

This unit needs more consistency.  Special teams tends to be an attitude for the teams that do it very well.  The Packers are a long way from that right now.

Others to mention

  • Kevin King, please stop getting hurt because when you're not, you're showcasing the reason why you were so highly drafted
  • Have to hope Darnell Savage won't be out long.  Same with Robert Tonyan, who had an phenomenal catch early on on a perfectly placed ball by Rodgers
  • Half of Rodgers' passes went to running backs.  That's not a bad job of taking what the defense is giving
  • The officiating in this game was less than stellar.  It's becoming clear that much of this NFL season is going to be impacted by a call that is or isn't made.  Kind of takes some of the excitement out of a potential playoff appearance and replaces it with worry that your team's season will end on a gut-wrenching call
  • When it comes to the Cowboys having to come back on the Packers, it's nice to know that Jason Garrett is running the show, isn't it?
  • Back home to take on the Lions, who have won the last four against Green Bay

Lame call to the officials. It gets sickening to watch the bias the Cowboys get from the refs. It's been going on since the 90s.

There was absolutely not indesputable evidence to over turn that int.

There's no bias. Every team, and i do mean EVERY TEAM has fans that thinks the refs are biased against them. Far better to take the line of Guams post (see below), that says the refs officiated poorly (which they did), rather than they are biased.

just right. Jerry Jones complained ever louder
the refs have a hard Job, they cant win, no matter what they do.
they just scapegoats.
the players make misstake all the time and ist not a big deal for the fans. refs are human too, what do you expect?

It's the replay! If the NFL is going to use replay and challenges, and have 30 angles to see the replay in slow motion, I damn well expect them to get the call right. Too many times they're still blowing calls, even with the use of replay. I don't think anyone expects the refs on the field to be perfect. If that was the case there would be no need for replay at all.

I would add a game ball for Brian Bulaga who was also "invisible" in a very good way despite contending with an injury and some pretty good Dallas pass rushers.

I would give the officials a lame call for one of the most poorly officiated games I have watched in a while. I don't think the officiating was biased in either way, just plain bad in every way. Missed calls, phantom calls, way too many flags that intruded on the flow of the game - just really poor officiating.

Neither a game ball nor lame call, but a concern that the Packers had a rash of injuries during the game. It seemed a Packer player was leaving the game every few minutes while Dallas had virtually no injuries. Not sure why the injury bug was so skewed against the Packers, but I hope they recover quickly as Detroit looms.....

Zadarius Smith x3, Preston Smith, Darnell Savage, Corey Linsley, Robert Tonyan, they all went down at some point with an injury. I don't know how world war Z kept going back out there because he was clearly in pain, but Savage and Linsley didn't. I would say that they lost a little bit more than Dallas did throughout the course of the game.

A good pickup croat, but I'd argue that losing both the right and the left tackles for a game (against a reasonable front 7) is catastrophic.

On another note, the Ray Lewis comment, I tend to agree with him. The Packers are missing something in the front 7 - depth. The starting 7 is as good as any team in the league but the rotational players are not able to maintain the standard (....yet - Keke is coming along well but Lancaster and Lowry are still inconsistent)

MLF definitely deserves some praise. GB easily has one of the toughest week 1-6 schedules in the league. 5 playoff contenders? (Detroit beat KC if the officials do their job)

This season hasn't been perfect, and both sides of the ball need to improve, but MLF has done an excellent job to get this team to 4-1.

Lame call to Aikman calling Cowboys games. He is too biased and it is distracting. And really annoying. Every good Pack play he claimed was an uncalled penalty, and every Cowboys penalty was a bad call.

Love what this team did despite the injuries! Game Ball to the bench.

Agreed. I'm not picky with announcers, but he got my attention yesterday after saying something like "unfortunately that ones coming back" after a penalty on dallas. Like he's on the home broadcast for the cowboys. He just shouldn't be on their games if he's going to be a fan.

Have to agree Cheekweek. Aikman is a homer for the Cowboys. I generally like Buck/Aikman when they aren't calling Cowboys games, but Aikman is a terrible homer for the Cowboys and it is particularly annoying when it is a Cowboys/Packers games. The network needs to recognize this shortcoming and adjust their play calling teams accordingly.

1) Does Aikman like his Cowboys? Sure he does. but he's also a HUGE Aaron Rodgers fan and I think he's fairly professional in the booth. Buck? That guy is a straight HATER. Eff that guy. But Aikman is good.

2) Tony Romo is obnoxious in the booth. Shut the eff up and call the game like a broadcaster. Nobody needs you talking over the game on every snap trying to predict the play. Well, okay, I take that back- apparently some of you people love that ish.

Game ball: Any time the camera showed Jerry Jones swearing & whining after his team was down three touchdowns. :)

Lame call: As per usual the refs don't seem to know what to call. Why even have the calls to New York (-or is it to Vegas?) for review if they're just going to go with whatever (right or wrong) is called on the field anyways?

Game Bals...

MLF... I thought he did an excellent job of getting a game plan together. Let's face it fellow Packers Fans...The Packers NEED a #2 WR...BADLY. BUT, Lafleur did a nice job of involving the TE's, and RB in the passing game.

Redman... I LOVE eating crow on this one because I said before the game NO REDMAN... Redman played a pretty dame good game Sunday. Nice job young man!

Bryon Bulaga... What a F***ing warrior! BB was awesome yesterday against a pretty dame good pass rush. Kudos to the entire Packers O-Line, it may not have been perfect but it was MORE than good enough...Especially Bulaga!

Packers Fans... I don't know if it's a "Game Ball" but anytime Jerry Jones is caught on camera not once, not twice, but 3 times with that STUPID look on his face, it HAS to feel good to other Packers fans and not just me.

The Side Judge (I Think)...The Ref that Actually did his job and laid the absolute right call on Opie Taylor...Oops...Jason Garrett.

The Smiths and Z Smiths "Sack Dance" borrowed from Ray Lewis.

Lame Calls... The OTHER Refs... This was one of the absolute worst called games by a crew that I can remember. From the call on Gary, the blindside block on Kenny Clark, the false start on the Cowboys when the whistle never blew until AFTER the Packers had the TO, and all the other calls before and after. It's at a point where you just HOPE your team gets screwed less than the opposing team.

The injuries... Boy o boy I hope Savage is okay. I saw him up walking around without a boot of huge brace so I'm thinking it was serious if he was on his feet on the sideline. The same goes for Kevin King. I've been super critical of King since being drafted but the man is playing hard and THROUGH injuries!

Jerry Jones comments after the game. Was he on the sideline? Did he know what Garrett said? Just STF up Jones. You're a moron who will never win a thing without Jimmy Johnson!

Buck and Aikman...Need I say anymore...

Taryn - I haven’t listened to the broadcasters for years now, except for some of the penalty calls that need to be explained. Of course the explanations don’t usually make sense because no one including the officials knows the rules any longer or how to get the calls correct.

But I agree it’s much better to watch without the airhead broadcasters. The last broadcaster that I enjoyed was John Madden. Since then it’s been a bevy of buffoons and chooches. Thanks, Since ‘61

NP....well said, you took the words right out of my mouth regarding MLF....how do you coach under adversity? Major injury, lack of WR talent with Adam's out. Well, my friends, he showed it at a very high level, from a great game plan to smart clock mgmt.

Another point I'd like to bring up is the play of Graham. I know a lot are against him, but I've been saying in other games he is showing much better blocking this year and he did it again yesterday. In addition, he is starting to stretch the field and showing he is a willing catcher of the ball in mid field. Very important for this offense to click! I know I will get some down votes due to this, but that is my take and I stand by it till he proves differently. In addition, he is doing this while being hurt. Don't tell me about one handed try's, do you really think he wouldn't put two hands up if he could? Mark my words, by the end of the year you 'al will be praising his play.

And a plus for Gute to recognize the need for a real gunner. With Davis gone, the packers are actually forcing fair catches. Weeks 1 and 2, Scott was getting off great punts, but no one was around to prevent a return. Last few weeks, and yesterday especially, the gunners were getting through the blocks and in the return man's face.

I like the depth of Sullivan as either CB or FS. Great grab by Gutsy. I like the way Redman came back after his play against the Eagles. The offense running game was very good as was Rodgers for a half.
Like all games this year, the offense plays well for a time and disappears. Hope to see the offense clicking during all four qtrs. in the future.
It has been pointed out that Rodgers only completed like 10 passes to his wide receivers...good because the first game in a while where Rodgers has had to find the open receiver instead of forcing the ball into a double/triple coverage situation. He took what the defense gave him.
The defense was very soft in the second half. Maybe because Savage was out, or more likely they had the big lead and relaxed mentally. This game will be a great example for coaches to show the players why you can never let up.
Bottom line....4-1 and very happy for the Packers!

I thought this was a great game to kill the narrative that Rodgers is a me-first QB. Brady has lasted this long because he refuses to take big hits in regular season games if he can avoid them. Rodgers playing within the system, avoiding the extra big hits that come with dropping back 30+ times a game, and being more than ok with a 0 TD game is awesome to see.

I don't think Arod forces many passes into double and or triple coverage, if anything, he is risk adverse and stays away from that. IE: very few INT's. That said, he tends to extend plays trying to find the big play vs taking what the defense is giving him. He even stated something like, I don't care about my stats anymore, I just want to win. So, I'm thinking you will see more games like this one where he takes what the defense gives him and follows the game plan more. The extending of plays being more of the exception vs the rule moving forward.

How about a game ball for the offense in general?

GB is 11th in points scored this year and has played 5 games against great defenses. 2018 points allowed ranking; Bears (#1), Vikings (#10), Denver (#12), Philly (#9) and Dallas (#7).

Averaging 28 points/game in the last four games, while the new offense is still being implemented and without Adams yesterday. It'd be great to get a new WR in the mix, but I'd put rushing defense as a higher need. This offense is showing signs that it can score on anyone with the personnel it has right now.

Yeah I'm not sure what the issue is, maybe that they've made so many changes and the adjustment period is longer than we'd like? What kills me is inconsistency. 0 holding penalties last week in the GB/PHI game, but I can watch another game and see 8 called. How can the blindside block on Kenny not get called yesterday, yet anytime Z Smith touches a facemask they call that penalty.

It was refreshing to see Rodgers "spread the wealth" and throw to more than 1 or 2 targets. The offense did well, especially Aaron Jones. And that defense did a good job with turnovers and stopping Elliott. And the Smith brothers put pressure on Prescott most of the day. If not getting sacks then hurrying him and forcing him to throw incomplete passes. Although the defense allowed the Cowboys back into the game in the second half they did what they had to for the win. And some of those bogus calls by the refs helped the Cowboys get back into the game as well. It was a hard fought battle but so nice to see the Cowboys get defeated on their own home field when most critics had the Cowboys winning this game before it even started. Never, ever, underestimate an opponent in the NFL. Especially a team as good as the Packers!! They were firing on all cylinders for most of the game. There's always room for improvement and some things to clean up. But the Packers looked like the championship caliber team instead of the Cowboys. Go! Pack! Go!

Agree with most of what you said, except the Elliott piece. The early lead by GB was huge, as was Dallas deciding early on that it needed to pass it's way back into the game.

Zeke had 62 yards on 12 attempts, with a TD. He also had 29 yards on 2 catches. Both of those scream 'use me more' not, 'this guy's getting shut down'.

I think Dallas would be a much more difficult team to beat if they had gotten the early lead, and Zeke would have had a massive stat line. The run defense needs to get addressed because they have the secondary to play man-on-man if necessary and provide help to the run defense. Problem is they don't have the people to be effective, though burks may help.

So, why they not use Elliot more if he was so effective? He had 3 nice runs. 9 runs were for 20-25 yards. ! run came at the first Cowboys series, 2 another "longer run came in the 4th quarter. The other Cowboys RB had also 2 or 3 nice gain by running the ball. That is all. Elliot was stopped. Watch the game, not the stats!

Agree on the game balls and I would add Kevin King who played through an injury and had a big pick to halt the Dallas rally and resulted in the game clinching FG.

Lame Calls: The officiating as usual in an NFL game, were they trying to get the game within the 3.5 point spread for Vegas? Lowry carried into the end zone by an RB for the second week in a row. Poor tackling by the Packers late in the game. Aikman is just too obviously biased for the Cowboys. The network needs to recognize it because it’s really bad. I turned down the sound except for the penalty calls but his bias was obvious during those samples. Getting difficult even to watch Packers games the way this league is going. Thanks, Since ‘61

They were Vegas calls all the way in the fourth qtr. Lost some cash. I had the Pack by 12, but covered the spread.
LaFleur will not be intimidated. I like his style. He knows the game is about players.

The NFL need professional referees so there can be accountability.

Isn't it ridiculous that with all the money in the NFL that they don't have full-time, professional referees? I've wondered that for years!

Nice win on the road again. Glad I didn’t bet, the Packers surprised me. We got to Dak and forced turnovers, that usually means success. As far as the refs go, there were some terrible calls but we caught some breaks also.

Aaron Jones! Man, the more touches that guy gets, the more fun he is to watch! Who was it that commented on this site last week that Jones was not the answer at running back? Would love to know how crow tastes!

Or how about serving up a nice big, and I do mean BIG bowl of crow to our friend MM for having Jones 3rd string running back behind Ty Montgomery and J Williams.

Even though I love the guy, I have been a critic of AR and his not take what the defense gives you with the short passes. It looks like he finally got the message. Still waiting to see some more of Vitaly though. That being said, the red zone offense is still frustrating.

I think we are very lucky that we went up big early and took EE out of the game.

How long will Gute and MLF let the special teams give up the big yard plays? Something is wrong there.

I hope we are not over confident with 4-1. Lot's of good stuff but we clearly need to get another WR who can find open field. Why can't we scheme them open?

A veteran WR would be great but at what price? Didn’t see this win coming but kudos to Lafleur etc. Two big road wins. As far as the refs go, not much you can do. It works both ways as we’ve also had some breaks......On to Detroit and be healthy.

The Price of Victory and a run to the SB. Ted's gone, get used to it. Gutekunst will pull some deals before the frost hits the Pumpkins.

I'm worried, I'm often worried so that's not unusual, but when Jamal Williams comes back we may return to that stagnant offense of the first few weeks. Williams taking carries away from Jones stifles the offense. He's just a guy who runs into a pile. This week Jones went off as never before for a number of reasons; Williams and Davante Adams were down, and Allison and MVS are awful. So it wasn't that LaFleur chose to highlight Jones, he had no choice. Getting back to why I'm worried - Jamal gets back, Jones sits more than he needs to, and we add to our league-leading three and outs. I have no worry about Adams.

I disagree. I like J Williams, not as dynamic as jones but is a very servicable RB. You can win with J Williams as a backup.

That's kind of an obvious observation, yes we need a backup, and yes Williams is serviceable, but you can't return to McCarthy and early LaFleur usage of splitting carries almost equally. That's insane. Jones is McCaffery, Kamara, Zeke... a bellcow back even if he doesn't have their size. He's a great football player who does you no good on the sideline.

Not likely to happen. CArson is a better blocker and receiver in the NFL player model.

Kind of takes some of the excitement out of a potential playoff appearance and replaces it with worry that your team's season will end on a gut-wrenching call……..

….or just the other way around. Is Always a two sided sword and luck is always a big factor anyway. Lucky bounces, momentum, injuries, game day form, getting hot at the right time...…..the refs just another part of so much circumsdances. Luck is always the deciding factor. one way or another

OK this one is off on a tangent to the theme of the post but having watched 5 games for each of these players I harbor no regrets that Gute did the right thing in letting CM3 and Randall Cobb walk --> so a recurring game ball for Gute (by virtue of the fact that the new players are actually on the game ball list, and the past players would be on the lame call list).

Randall Cobb: Cobb's drops and inconsistency in the last game made think "well at least we aren't paying a rookie $5million to do that!". He's had some good catches this year but he's not consistent and he commonly fails to get separation in the seam.

Clay Matthews: CM3's stats suggest that he's having a reasonable year but look no further than that last quarter of the Rams game. He either got suckered into the outside bull-rush (which he no longer has the bend to achieve) or was ballroom dancing just with the TE, or worse, flatly took the play off. It wasn't a good game for CM3. I'd argue that his best position now is inside shooting gaps or running down the RB. He also still gets caught trying to pulverize the QB instead of trying to strip-sack them (He also seems to be a "marked" man for the referees too - which is a liability).

Deon Sanders said GB is a real good football team, the best in the NFC. He had A Jones on prime time again. Let Jerry keep sticking his big fat nose in the Cowboys and they'll never be a contender.

I was not able to watch much of the game, but I believe the Packer’s scored on each of their initial drives.......In the first and second half. Love that they are setting the tone and creating some positive ju-ju.

It was nice to see Aaron Rodgers run the offense as it is intended for the first time this season.

It might be a shame if the only reason he spread the ball around and implemented the RBs consistently was because he didn't have his Davante Adams security blanket on the field to look for. I hope #12 keeps it up when he returns.

This is the offense that the Packers need, and it's the offense that can extend Rodgers career.. and maybe even win us another SB. Run your horses, implement the TEs, take what the defense gives you, and use all your weapons. If the Packers keep running the actual MLF offense, Rodgers is going to find that his PA snaps will actually have some bite as opposing defenses will have to honor the run, as well as defend all areas of the field.

Hey coach Oppy since it seems you have the inside knowledge on the play book share it with us. Fact is you don’t know anything about what they are working on so stop pretending you do. You are making yourself look foolish.

You ever hear of Mike and Kyle Shanahan? How about McVay?

Here's a term for you to research: "Coaching Tree".

Or, I don't know, maybe read an article or two about Matt LeFleur's offense. I hear you can find them on this thing called the internet. You'll at least get the basics of how he approaches attacking a defense.

You don't have to like what I have to say, but LeFleur's offense isn't a big mystery. Educate yourself. Information is out there.

Ahhh now I get it reading articles makes you the expert on how these two work together. Listen to Rodgers post game interview, he encouraged MLF to stick with the running game. I prefer to hear it directly from #12 instead of pretending to know all and being so damn negative all the time. From what I have heard it has been buy in since day one.

First off, I'm not a football expert, but I know plenty enough about the X's and O's and regardless of whether other posters here agree or disagree with me from time to time, I think since CHTV was launched I've garnered at least a modicum of respect for being analytical and approaching most topics here with reason and a decent grasp of the game over the last 12 years. I follow the Packers pretty closely. I understand the core concepts of football. I read, watch, and consume information. Generally speaking, I'm not just flipping shit off the cuff.

That being said, I am pretty much done with my respect for #12 as a man.

Rodgers is an expert media manipulator.

Frankly, I think the guy is total douche bag. I think there's a ton of evidence that he has conveniently used selective wording during press conferences over the years to promote a false narrative on a number of things without technically having "lied" about it.

I think Aaron Rodgers talks a great deal about how he really wants to be coached, but watch him on the sidelines interacting with LeFleur as he's being coached.. He's not having it.

I also think Rodgers is supremely talented. However he lets his ego, and in my opinion, his desire to go down as the most efficient QB in history, get in the way of doing what might be in the best interests of the team occasionally. I think it is shameful how many people, media included, lay blame on everyone surrounding Rodgers, when there is ample proof, yes, proof, that Rodgers is culpable is some instances.

On Rodgers' buy-in since day one: Anyone who is familiar with the style of offense MLF runs could look at the first 3 games of the season and see, by and large, that wasn't it. When the commentators during the Denver game said that Vic Fangio told them he concluded after doing his film study for the game that roughly 50-60% of the plays being run from scrimmage by the Packers' offense were Mike McCarthy plays, that's all you need to know about Rodgers' supposed 100% buy in.

Oh, yeah..

Game Ball to Matt LeFleur, for continuing to coach Aaron Rodgers and not back down.

#12 claims he wants to be coached, and like it or not, he's getting coached. Good for you, MLF. Don't back down. Get Rodgers back under control and he'll be a better QB for it. He'll eventually thank you.

Maybe.

The high bar that Alexander sets for himself? He gave up over 200 yards to Cooper and if Cooper catches the ball that was a pick, he has 240 yards and a TD. That is pathetic D.

Alexander better get better if he wants to be a shut down corner.
