Packers 33 49ers 30: Game Balls & Lame Calls

-- Well, for the most part, what transpired at Lambeau Field under the primetime lights of Monday Night Football was a rollercoaster ride.

The Green Bay Packers squeaked out a game-winning field goal from none other than Mason Crosby -- once again back to being the renowned hero -- after sputtering throughout a majority of the game.

There were, however, a lot of positives to take away from the 33-30 victory. But there were some negatives too. Let's check them out.

Game Balls

Aaron Rodgers

The reality is, Aaron Rodgers hasn't been himself the last few weeks. He's missed a lot of throws that he would typically make with minimal difficulty. While a lot of his struggles could be attributed to his lingering knee injury, he hasn't done much to help himself by checking the ball down and taking what the defense is giving him underneath.

That wasn't the case against the San Francisco 49ers. Rodgers did indeed check the ball down multiple times. He even ripped off a few runs -- including a 21-yard run to help set up a game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter -- and showed that his knee is certainly on the right track en route to healing.

It was Rodgers' second consecutive game with over 400 yards passing. He's never had more than one game in a single season where he's thrown for over 400 yards. With a bleeding elbow staining his white sleeve, a banged-up knee protected by a brace fit for an offensive lineman and a touchdown deficit with under three minutes to play, Rodgers was his usual self with some of the throws he made.

Mason Crosby

This one was obvious. After going 1-for-5 in last week's loss to the Detroit Lions, Crosby was 7-for-7 against the 49ers, including making the extra points. One of those kicks was the game-winner that helped boost the Packers to 3-2-1 heading into their bye week.

It would seem as if Crosby's late field goal last week against the Lions was a huge confidence booster for him heading into this week. Crosby's back, and he's more than deserving of a game ball.

Nick Perry

Nick Perry has been practically invisible this season, but he wasn't Monday night. Perry was credited with three pass deflections with two of them coming at the line of scrimmage, preventing 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard from even getting the throw down the field.

Perry didn't finish the game with any tackles or anything worth acknowledging on the stat sheet, but he looked significantly better than he did at any point this season. He showed speed and strength off the edge and even dropped into coverage on a couple of plays. The Packers' pass rush has been non-existent, but Perry helped engineer a good amount against the 49ers.

Lame Calls

Third-down Conversions

At one point, the Packers were 0-for-6 on third down by the third quarter, before finally finding Jimmy Graham to make them 1-for-7, which... is still bad. The Packers need to execute on early downs and prevent them from digging themselves a hole.

They continuously found themselves in third-and-excessively long situations against the 49ers, and at that point, it didn't even seem like they tried getting the first. Instead, Mike McCarthy would run "giveup" plays which aim for any form of positive yardage. The Packers did end up finishing 4-for-13 on third down.

Clay Matthews

On the opposite end of the spectrum as Nick Perry is Clay Matthews, who looked about his age tonight. Matthews looked slow, uninspired and even got juked out of his shoes at one point after trying to crash down and make an open-field tackle.

Mike Pettine can find fancy ways to generate pressure all he wants, but the Packers just don't have the skill at outside linebacker to set the edge when they need to.

Matthews did finish with a sack -- one of two players to have one on the Packers' defense -- that came at a crucial time in the fourth quarter.

Aaron. Jones.

This isn't a "lame call" for Aaron Jones himself, but more so how he continues to fail to see an extensive amount of carries. He once again had a dry spell Monday night after starting the game so hot, but McCarthy wanted to roll with the "committee" in the backfield.

Jones led the Packers' running backs in carries, which is all fine, but not when that number is as low as eight. When Jones is averaging over five yards per carry and ripping off chunks of yardage almost every time he touches the ball, that number should almost be doubled.

Other mentions

  • Mike McCarthy's offensive play-calling for a majority of the game was really good. Not good enough to earn a game ball, but it was a step in the right direction.
  • The trio: Jimmy Graham, Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling stepped up big time. All went over 100 yards receiving.
  • The Packers desperately need better safety play when defending the deep ball. Marquise Goodwin had himself a career night.
  • Receivers were wide open all over the field against the Packers' defense. C.J. Beathard shouldn't be looking like prime Dan Marino.
  • Say what you want about Ha Ha Clinton-Dix: He's a turnover machine.
  • The Packers' run defense is a problem. It's quietly been a problem for most of the season to this point, but Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert didn't help but expose that fact further.
  • That may have been Blake Martinez's worst game of the season.

Games Balls...MVS...This kid is balling! I can't wait for them to figure out ways to get him the ball on quicker hitters with a blocker or two.

Crosby...To come out and kick like that after a week like last week....KUDOS Mason!

Montgomery... On 1st down he had a hell of a nice run to set up the whole game winning drive.

The Defense on the last 3 series...Nice Job.

Lame Calls...K Brice...OMG!!! I can't believe they lift Aaron Jones in a second yet this moron continues to do absolutely nothing when on the field. He's HORRIBLE!! I don't care, Josh Jones just can't be much worse than him. I mean with Brice playing the way he is, WHY NOT play Jones. Can he really be THAT much worse? Especially around the LOS.

The defense the first 3 quarters!

On 4th down in the 4th quarter not throwing to Adams. Rodgers had enough window, especially low to stick it in there.

I thought it was interesting that Rodgers said that Bakhtiari called the Montgomery run.

The defense lame calls I would say the first half. They gave up 24 points in the first half 6 in the 2nd.

Also what bothered me was on 3rd down on the drive they failed to get points he had Moore wide open at about the 1 yard line, instead he tries to run. I don't care who he is, he was wide open. Throw it to his upfield shoulder and he could have fallen into the end zone.

I can't figure out Mccarthys love affair with Brice either. According to Football Outsiders, hes played the most snaps of any defense player and the 4th most on the team. The only 3 ahead of him are o lineman that haven't missed a snap. Brice is exactly what he projected to be, 1st round measurables and UDFA game tape. Josh Jones has 4 defensive snaps and 1 tackle this year. I knew Jones must be looking terrible back in camp when he wasn't the top backup at S or LB but if he looks that much worse than Brice cut him today

Lame calls.... another penalty on a long kick return. Being the 2nd most penalized team is unacceptable. I put most of this on the coaches.

Run D. We got run over tonight

Redzone offense. 4 more FG drives....we need to start converting some of these drives into TDs

"Run D."

It was pathetic how they got repeatedly scorched off the edge. Got beat up the gut too many times, too. I can't imagine what Gurley is going to do to this defense in two weeks.

Shanahan ran this offense, in many ways, the same way he did when he was OC in Atlanta and they torched the Packers two years ago. He had his way.

These are my additions to the column

Game Balls:

Davante Adams - 16 targets 10 receptions 132 yards and 2 TD's. Adams has quickly become an Elite WR.

Rookie WR's -
MVS 3 receptions 103 yards
ESB 1 reception 19 yards
Moore 1 reception 10 yards.
While Moore and ESB only had 1 catch each, they both came in big moments of the game. ESB mad one hell of a catch on the final drive to really give them a chance at winning.
In the last 2 games MVS & ESB have combined for 14 catches for 279 yards and a 1 TD. Thats pretty good for the rookies!

Kevin King - Perfect time to have your first career interception! He read that play perfectly!

Lame Calls -
Overall I was fine with the game plan and everything they did.
But it was clear the 49ers figured out the bootlegs that were working, and they weren't going to work anymore. But to keep running them, why?

Other Mentions -

The bye week has come at a good time. Getting back 3 starters should really help the team out. Also getting Breeland some action will be really good as well.

Getting the win was the most important part. Doesn't matter how you get there, all that counts at the end of the day is a W or L. They got the W.

"Kevin King - Perfect time to have your first career interception! He read that play perfectly!"

Don't get me wrong: he made a key play, but he owed that all to the pass rush. I'm not convinced that if Beathard gets a chance to put something on that throw that King doesn't get beat. Instead, it fluttered and King had underneath positioning for the pick.

RCP, you said:
"Kevin King - Perfect time to have your first career interception! He read that play perfectly!"

I want to remind you on one very important play in NFCCG 2014 when our "best" CB, T. W. was covering WR on the last play of the game. Tramon was covering side, not center of the field. I was claiming that this was mistake.
In the last game on Sunday, King was covering center of the field and you know result...

So much about good positioning and experience of Tramon. Also, Tramon was badly juked on the SF TD when he did not know where is his WR... Pathetic.

Zach "That may have been Blake Martinez's worst game of the season." How was this Blake's worst game of the season? He was all over the field making tackles including at least 1 TFL. How on earth do you not give a lame call to Brice? You don't even mention one of the best plays of the game with the ESB sideline catch. Reminded me of Cook's catch against Dallas. Bahktiari also deserves a game ball he was great in pass protection and run blocking.

Lots of mentions in articles and tweets about Martinez having a bad game. IIRC, APC, packerswire, Kruse. I didn't record the game so I can't watch this one again. I do remember a big tackle for loss by Martinez late in the game.

Really? You doubt? This team is a total shit show without AR, you and everyone else knows it. What did he do when the defense finally got some stops and got him the ball back? 10 points in the last 2 minutes is all. Maybe you would be happier with Kizer at the 10 with a little over a minute and no time outs.

Finally got some stops? Huh? I don't think we watched the same game.

The Packers punted 4 times.
The Packers kicked 3 field goals (plus 1 game winning field goal.)
The Packers turned it over on downs 1 time.

There's eight possessions right there without a single touchdown.......mostly due to Rodgers laying eggs.

Checkout NFL Game Pass.

Aaron started great, deteriorated over the course of the game, then became a god in the fourth quarter

My theory is they give Aaron two pain pills a game and he's pretending to take them, but then secretly he pockets them until he needs them most. Then it's magic time

We might qualify as a one and done playoff team.
Good enough for our highly successful NFL head coach.

Either D was not mentally ready or schematically prepared to play. They clearly did something in Q4. Is that on MM or Pettine? Team needs to be able to play man coverage. It seemed like SF had a man wide open for those 5-10 yarders almost every time.

AR still has something but he is not finding the open man soon enough and holding the ball too long too many times. He should have been able to make them pay for those blitzes and make them back off. Without him, though, we are 1-5.

“Receivers were open all over the field” it was literally one guy half is yards went to Goodwin which is someone Alexander would have been locking down if he had played,he was really missed this game but adjustments were made and Goodwin had what 15 yards after halftime? The leagues best 4th quarter defense lived up to its billing again but man it would be great if they can do this for 4 whole quarters.

SF ground game stats are what he's going by, Martinez still led the way with 9 tackles 3 Assists. He also helped cmIII get a sack by his closing speed. Closing speed in the 4th quarter was never better. His blitz was perfect in the 4th too. He read the plays faster. CMIII and Perry got held up to often. But Perry did manage to knock down some plays that were big time help. Clarke deserves a lot of credit too. Opening the lane for Martinez. The author may be picking on his pass coverage. (Why he and Brice were deep on SF TD throw was bad. )

Packers defense were in their base with cover 2 with what looked like quarters coverage. One of the few times they were playing zone with man principals. That entire play targeted Brice from the get go, moving Goodwin pre snap in the slot to overload that side, using Brice's weakness for peeking in the backfield so he would be leading in and losing leverage. Goodwin 4.2 showed up in his cut in the post. Brice had no chance. A well designed, and executed play leading to a touchdown for SF.

Game seems to have come down to their DBs who can cover our WRs vs. a QB who can make all the throws...

And our DBs who left their WRs wide open all night vs. a backup QB who has OK talent.

And it was just about a wash for 59:57.

Brice is not good in coverage and apparently Jones is worse or he would be playing. I would love to see Williams moved to safety a la Charles Woodson if Breeland is ready to go after the bye. With Alexander, Jackson, King and Breeland available at corner and Williams and HHCD ( at least he is generating turnovers) at safety, we have a chance at a pretty good secondary.

So happy for Crosby. Redemption is good.

Tony Brown. Seriously dude you can't keep getting stupid penalties. It was a great defensive stance that prevented you from being the game goat. Actually lame balls for the continuing large number of special team penalties. How one gets a penalty on a fair catch I'll never know?

The penalty on Tony Brown was a chippy call. The 49er was in bounds when Brown hit him and stayed with him until he was out of bounds. Wayne Larrivee saw it and said it was a bad call, as well. As far as game balls go, I'd give the game ball to Mason Crosby.

I give my lame calls to McCarthy's play calling . Once again he started out with unusual wrinkles which moved the offense well then fell into the usual stubborn group of plays, boots and tired routes, which let the 49's defense make plays. Another goes to the Safety play. Poor tackling, blown or late coverages were rampant. With coaching is the penalty monster. How many drives were stalled or field position ruined by silly penalties?
Game balls go to the faster paced offense which keeps the offense moving and the defense guessing. Martinez seemed to be making plays but was behind a leaking D-line.

Here's my prediction coming out of the bye week or at least what I think the should do:

1.) Move Breeland into the starting spot on the outside for Williams. He should be healthy can comfortable after the extra week in Pettine's defense.

2.) Move Williams into the safety position for Brice. Williams played 2 games at safety under Pettine in Cleveland and PFF had him the highest rated safety those 2 weeks. It would be definite coverage upgrade from Brice.

The 49ers actually have a really good defensive front.

They have Solomon Thomas who was the player they took after trading down 1 spot when the Bears took Trubisky. They also have Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner. That is a good front.

File this under the "Silver Lining" section, but there was a play late in the game last night where the 49ers ran a delayed stunt where a defender came from just outside of Bulaga's shoulder and he attacked the A gap, and Bell seemlessly passed his man off to Bulaga and picked up the stunt, stopped him cold.

Unfortunately, even though Rodgers had a picture perfect, text book pocket formed around him, he inexplicably got spooked and ran through the pocket, scrambling for a number of yards before sliding. For absolutlely no reason. at all.

Lets not forget that Bulaga was hurt this week. Also, Bell left during the game for a big. I'm assuming injury related?

I expect them to be a lot better. But also Rodgers was holding the ball to long and they didn't run it enough.

I think they will look better after the bye. I think they will make some corrections that they need to.

Bulaga was amazing last night. Playing on what amounted to one leg, Packers could not run on his side expect influence plays. McCray is too hurt to play expect as a last resort, Bell can't run block worth a darn cause of his shoulder injury and that left the last OL standing, Patrick. With the game on the line in the 4th, they stoned a really good SF front and gave Rodgers plenty of time. Amazing.

Yeah. Watching us trying to run off the right side was painful.

Game balls:
Aaron Rodgers
Mason Crosby
Davante Adams
MVS
Kevin King

Lame calls:
CM3
Mike Daniels
Ken Brice
3rd down ratio

Packers still need to be better in the red zone on offense. Defense needs to show up and play the first half.

Good time for the bye week. The Packers need to heal up and have plenty of work to do to get ready to on the road against the Rams and Pats. Thanks, Since '61

Bye week homework:

Coaches - go back and read the rules book and tidy up those technique penalties with your units.

There's a bunch of player-specific ones but if the coaches can just remove the penalties then this team gets an instant lift.

Good point Minniman. Cleaning up the penalties would be a huge help for this team right now. Thanks, Since '61

How exactly do you clean up penalties when the refs are calling them inconsistently and often times over nothing? Being penalized isn't unique to the Packers. Watch any team play the field is littered with yellow.

HHCD has two great turnovers: interception vs Redskins and this most recent punch vs. 49ers. Other than those two plays, he is LOST, behind plays and looks confused. He is afraid to hit and has poor instincts. So before everyone let’s loose on KB, both safeties have similar awareness IMO. Time to move a corner (Breeland has me interested) to safety or trade for a competent safety.

Lame, the inconsistency. But if you look at the league in general, except for the Chiefs, Rams, Pats (although they lost to the lolions), the whole NFL is pretty inconsistent. IMO it has a lot to do with the cba and lack of padded practices.

Buy week, a lot of these guys should spend it in the film room and working on their game. Hopefully the o line will be healthy and AR's knee will get a smaller brace.

MM needs to sit his major penalty offenders down and tell them to get their sh*t together or they will be benched. This is an undisciplined, sloppy team right now. I've defended MM but this is on him. Too many stupid penalties taking major yardage off the team's gains. On the plus side, I wonder if Nick Perry has been watching old tape of Johnny Jolly's swatting the ball technique, lol. I'm liking what I see in the young WR's. I think it's good that Rodgers will now have more confidence to throw to them in the future. MM has typically won the game after the bye week; it sure would be nice if that happens this year! Not the most encouraging game I've ever watched but still a W. Hopefully, Rodgers gets some major healing on that knee during the bye and gets rolling for all 4 quarters. For once the team is more healthy than not at the bye. Sure would be nice if they can stay healthy going into the coming gauntlet of games.

Giving Aaron Rodgers a game ball feels a lot like commending a mother who suffers from Munchausen by Proxy syndrome for being a diligent and caring nurturer of her children... even though she's making the kids sick in the first place.

The defense is a big part of the problem- no question- but this offense doesn't need nearly the amount of last-minute Rodgers' heroics to win games if Aaron gets his head out of his ass, makes accurate reads, and delivers accurate throws on time during the majority of the game.

The Packers were THIS close to losing the season and the calls for MM to be fired would be the talk of the next two weeks. Just think if they had Garrapolo this game? I still don't know what team we have but I am leaning towards a 500 team at best based on what I saw last night. Great comeback by Rodgers. One of his best in my opinion. Most happy for Crosby. I was one of the few who said last week was an "aberration" and Crosby proved me right. God works in mysterious ways. Crosby given a second chance and is a hero. Love how life can swing so quickly for the better after a major catastrophy.

Don't see how Tony Brown doesn't wind up on the lame calls. Totally undisciplined penalty that again put the Pack in a very tough spot.

The answer to the martinez question is move him to O LB. His energy and pass rush put CM3 to shame (SHAME!). but as a MLB he is just not good.

Watch the detroit running TDs, nobody blocks BM but he does nothing.

Watch the niner run in the 2nd qtr for 20+ yards, no block on BM and he wiffs. He has issues with depth and movement.

change him a CM3 because unless CM3 can play decent at M LB it is time to put him out of all of our misery.

Martinez isn't a very good ILB?
The guy is a tackling machine and he rarely takes false steps.
The idea of putting him at OLB completely negates his fundamental strength, which is seeing the play and flowing to the ball carrier in space to make the sure tackle. You're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist with a poor solution.

Mike Pettine needs to get out of the box and on the sideline! I thought we got rid of Dom Capers.
Players need their coach in front of them to impress the importance of their play, not a figurehead out of sight. If he needs to read the field put an assistant who understands in the box to relay info. Not the other way around!

The packers are an average team at best. Looking for a turnaround is delusional. Teams knew what Capers was going to do on every play. Teams now know what McCarthy is going to do every play. I thought Joe Philbin was going to make the offense unstoppable. Looks all too familiar to me. While we aren't going to see a season as bad as last year. It could be close. Quite a number of fans like me, will be wondering why the hell they are spending three hours of their day off watching total mediocrity.

That’s why I only spend TWO hours of my day off looking at myself in the mirror; I can only tolerate so much mediocrity.
