Packers 27 Chiefs 20: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers returned home to close out the preseason and did so in style with a 27-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Very few key starters played as the Packers needed to evaluate the bottom of their roster for the final time.

Let's take a look at who made a final push and who may have pushed themselves out the door.

Game Balls

Kingsley Keke

Keke was all over the place in this game.  He batted a ball down at the line of scrimmage and had a sack.  Keke looks to be a player who can contribute to the defense right away.  Replacing Mike Daniels is no easy task but Keke could be one guy who helps that cause sooner than later.

Markus Jones

Jones had the pressure that helped lead to Ty Summers' pick six, disrupted another pass and had a fumble recovery.  They all came against back up players but was this barrage of big plays enough to get Jones consideration for the final roster?

Ty Summers

Summers had five tackles and hauled in an errant pass and took it to the house.  Automatic game ball every time.  Summers, at the very least, looks like a player who can fill in while the Packers wait for Oren Burks to get healthy.  A seventh-round pick, Summers would provide a huge value to the defense if he's able to contribute in a similar way to the past two games.

Lame Calls

J'Mon Moore

Too many appearances in this column for the former fourth rounder.  Moore stopped on a route, easily allowing a DeShone Kizer pass to be picked off deep in Packers territory.  Moore just can't get out of his own way and will likely be looking for his next adventure before the weekend is over.

Mason Crosby

Mason, dude.  The kicker spot is still likely yours but the other guy lasted all camp and you. . you missed a PAT?  Every time Crosby misses, it's shades of Detroit a year ago.  He may have the confidence of the Packers when it comes to kicking in the elements and in big games, but fans will surely be holding their breath a bit more this season when Crosby lines one up.

Natrell Jamerson

Jamerson played nearly the entire game and wasn't able to do much to help his cause.  He was badly beaten one-on-one for a touchdown and was commonly out of position.  Jamerson had an up-and-down camp but ended it out with a thud in this finale.  He wasn't likely making the final roster, but Jamerson had a good chance to land on the Packers' practice squad.  Now, he could find himself working his way onto another squad.

Others to note:

  • As has been noted a few times, the back up quarterback battle is still wide open
  • The Packers got spread out and looked outhustled on defense
  • Dexter Williams should be the team's third back despite being behind Tra Carson on the depth chart.  But Williams also needs to be more decisive and stop dancing around before making his move
  • The Packers have to figure out how to play well on the road
  • Packers have some tough choices to make over the next day or two
  • tt's Bears week and it counts now

Hopefully they figure this out on Thursday night football at Chicago. So excited to see what this team really looks like with Rodgers and the starters for a whole game. Go Pack!

I think Kizer is probably done. I'd rather use the roster spot for an extra wide receiver. The tackling is getting better. The Bears game will be a fist fight! Go Pack!

I would disagree! I know it is easy to not like Kizer but I saw a much different QB last night. Confidence and strong in the pocket. Strong arm and great deep throw right on the money to Redding (dropped) under strong rush. JMon appeared to have cut his route short and Kizer gave up an INT because of it.

I do think Boyle might have had the inside track prior to last night. I think they keep both on the 53 in part because they are both so young and neither have really separated themselves definitively from one another yet. I think we have both until next year when either one really stands out or they draft a QB high.

Kizer helped himself last night. He was on the bubble and I think he probably slid off.

If ML, Hackett and Getsey, all QB experts, all tell Gute both Boyle and Kizer as very young guys are developing and have good upsides, I agree with you that 3 QBs make the roster.

LP,
"He was on the bubble and I think he probably slid off."

One could read that statement a couple of different ways but believe you mean Kizer is back on the 53. :)

Will be interesting how this plays out. Obviously they could keep only one of the 53 but for some of the reasons already mentioned I do not see how they do that. There is so much room for continued development with each of these guys at their age. Throw in Rodgers age and history of injuries almost seems like the Pack needs to keep both on the 53.

I agree. If you actually break down what they are doing, it is not even particularly close. Kizer will be the back up unless Gute finds a game changer. Boyle would likely make the PS after last night.

I don't have a preference between Kizer and Boyle, but I hope they only keep one of the two. Tying up two roster spots for two mediocre QBs and foregoing another talented player (WR, OLB, S) would not be the best decision for the team.

It looked like J’Mon was running crossing route and looked liked chiefs were playing zone so J’Mon was suppose to slow down and sit in the hole. So I’m pretty sure that pick was on Kizer. I could be wrong but that’s the way it looked to me cause if it was man that guy would have been on his back side not sitting out in front of him that’s why slowed up. But either way J’Mon has done nothing and imo Boyle has outplayed Kizer this preseason. I don’t even think it close. Boyle looks way more confident about what he’s doing and makes better decisions, makes more plays down field, takes less sacks, and doesn’t throw picks.

Not so sure about that pic though. I watched the play a couple times. Chiefs looked to be in zone and Moore appeared to squat in the seam, as he should. Kizer seemed to read man and threw it right into the next zone (who picked it). I thought Kizer panicked under pressure. I think it was Andy Herman who said Kizer looks like a guy “trying “ to play QB and not a guy who is a QB. I get that when I watch him. No trust he’s not going to pull a bonehead play out of his pocket at a critical time in a game.

I do not.

Last season was not his first problematic one. He had one 3 years ago. Guy can not be last barrier for the opponent kick-returner either, because he is very slow. He can not kick the field-goal from more than 55 yards, not even in calm weather. He is average or JAG.

Why should not Packers looks for better kicker who will cost less?

I am not a big Crosby fan, mostly because he is at best a decent kicker now and he is significantly overpaid for that level of performance. However Sam Ficken is not the answer (50% of FG???). Just look at the mess the Bears and Vikings created for themselves when they prematurely cut established kickers without having a quality replacement.

The Packers need to find an alternative to Crosby in the next 1-2 years, but I don't see a viable alternative this year.

Looked to me like he stopped the route. That would be at best miscommunication. Kizer is looking deeper it seems to me. That said, impossible to know unless one is the play caller.

Thinking Ty Summers is a viable option at inside linebacker would be a mistake. He's made some tackles, but is out of position constantly and would be a huge liability if asked to play real snaps during the season.

He may be able to develop into a serviceable linebacker eventually, but he's not close to being there yet.

Summers is the only option. Having the veterans around him is what is needed. He's staying on the field. While Burks and Bolton can't find it. We had Morrison, Mathews, Ryan, and many others there. Summers will make plays. That INT was heads up. Summers is our best shot.

These people complaining about Summers really make me wonder how much football they’ve played or watched.

Being with the 1s is an entirely different game, and he has shown he can play. Just about every ILB counts on the DL to take up blockers.

I believe Summers will show better with the 1s much like Dexter Williams will show better with the 1s blocking the way.

Summers is a rookie, but has played more than anyone this preseason. That’s a hell of a lot of reps. Of course he’s made his miscues. Who wouldn’t?

Do you remember AJ Hawk as a rookie?

Summers is a viable option and that assessment is not a mistake. At least he is on the field, makes plays and last night made good tackles on the ball carrier.

Who is your mistake free “viable option” for next Thursday? Burks or Bolton? Nope, can’t go. Crawford? Nope. Some street FA after cutdown day? A most likely mistake since he wouldn’t know the D....and guys get cut for a reason. A trade for an established starter? Maybe, but at what cost? Would he a liability not knowing the D?

Summers has worked hard to know the D and called all the plays....I think playing with Martinez and the starters will help Summers athleticism and play making shine even more.

If you know anything about playing the inside linebacker position, that assessment is a mistake. He has potential, but he's not close to being ready to play meaningful snaps at the NFL level yet. If he can be so far out of position against 4th stringers imagine what would happen if he was playing against starters.

Raven Greene will be the other starting linebacker until Burks, or possibly Bolton returns.

Summers is a nice player for a 7th round pick....but he was a 7th round pick for a reason.

While there is a lot of uncertainty about who the Pack keep at WR for the 53 I think we can all agree there are three WR's who with almost certainty who will not make the 53. JMon, Redding, and I believe even Shepherd. I think Lazard will make the 53 over Shepherd but even if you flipped it with Shepherd making it over Lazard you cannot keep three WR's on the PS. At very very most 2 WR's but even that may not happen. I think it is going to be crazy interesting who makes it and who doesn't. I have been a pretty strong supporter of JMon since he was drafted but man he does not look good. His on field performance is bad and his interviews are bad. It is obvious the QB's do not trust him and he doesn't get many throws his way. For a WR who everyone says is so athletic and creates space getting open frequently the QB's do not look for him. That is a very telling sign!

They claim he gets open all the time and he’s a great run after the catch ability but every game I watched he gets no throws to him and when he does he drops them so I don’t know where These people are seeing him do this maybe in their dreams because he’s definitely not done it in the preseason games.

Guam....since we made the change at GM, the operating assumption has been that if we have Aaron Rodgers at QB we'll be able to compete for the division title, and if we don't, then we can't. We've passed on some good choices in the draft the last two years that would have us with a backup that could perhaps do a solid job even if we needed him for an extended period.

This is Gute's Gamble: If it works, and we can keep Rodgers upright and healthy all year, we'll be competitive. I think the odds are against that, frankly.

IMO, it has been a mistake to not get a real player in position. Rodgers is turning 36 and has a pretty significant injury history. We've got a pretty good team, IMO, that could win with a decent QB but I don't think we have one. So all the eggs are in the Rodgers basket, and that's just too risky for my blood.

OS.... I largely agree with your assessment of the situation with one caveat. Gute did acquire a QB that the Packers were reportedly high on the year he was drafted - Kizer. Unfortunately for the Packers I don't think Kizer has developed as well as Gute would have wished. That happens with a lot of college QBs.

We will see what happens with next year's draft, but I think the team is now deep enough that the Packers can afford a high draft choice at QB in 2020.

Did Davis even play last night? After his recent outstanding play it is clear to me he is ahead of Shepherd, especially after last night. That fumble was bad...he was very careless with the football.

Can one fumble get you cut? No, but it slides you down the “keep” list.

Adams, MVS, Allison, Kumerow, Davis, ESB (then to IR), and then try to get Lazard or Shepherd back on the 53 after cuts...but not both.

Tough decisions.

Shepherd and Davis don’t play the same role. They are not interchangeable. The fumble was actually a perfectly timed and located punch. Ball was high and tight. It happens.

I would still start Shepherd as a returner if Davis is hurt (not implausible). He is a natural catcher of kicks, but Shepherd earned his spot as a receiver who can read plays, get open and make tough catches. Last night doesn’t change that.

LabeauPlain,

Yes, Davis did play, and WAY more than I would have liked. He showed pretty well. Completely unnecessary putting him in though, unless they are trying to decide between the two, which I believe would be a mistake. Keep them both.

I feel they need to trade one of our other WRs to help bolster ILB or OT. Possibly RB.

Coldworld, "not implausible" is indeed correct. We need to guard against that by keeping Shep.

I don’t know about everyone else but it’s time to give some new faces a chance. Had a argument with a guy that Reggie Gilbert shouldn’t be traded. Then Gutekunst is getting rid of great players. Gilbert great player hell no and to get picks is a bonus. The team must transform into Gutekunst/ LaFluer team. The game and team must change it’s vision. The tunnel vision of fans loving back ups that don’t impact games is foolish.

Kizer is Hundley, first read, sometimes a second, then off to the races. That's not how to play QB. Boyle hangs in against the rush. His throws are tighter spirals, not sure if he has the stronger arm for long throws but for those 20-30 yarders and sideline throws he looks to be much better. I'm a Boyle guy.

Boyle "hangs in against the rush" because he isn't mobile enough to escape. He's basically Drew Bledsoe back there. He's solid when he has a clean pocket and doesn't have to avoid the rush, but once the pocket breaks, he panics and his mechanics disappear.

Last night, Kizer was much better than Boyle when it comes to pocket presence and standing strong in the rush. He took some huge hits and still made some very good throws, including a perfect deep ball that Redding dropped. It's likely both make it, but Kizer should probably be QB2 since he fits LaFleur's system better (think Mariota and Gabbert in Tennessee last year).

Keke, Summers & Markus Jones definitely deserve their kudos.

All 3 should be locks for the 53. Jones’ resume is remarkable, and I cannot believe BAL cut him to sign Joe Callahan. Jones has enormous potential, and he showed in this important, win-in game that he belongs.

Keke rOcKs. Pretty funny, I saw Santana Dotson last week (we had met and hung out a couple of times over the years), told him Keke reminded me immediately of a young version of himself. You should have seen the smile on his face...

Santana agreed.

Game Ball: Packers protecting key players from injury during the meaningless preseason.

Lame Call: Four preseason games of glorified HS football.

If the NFL wants to get to an 18 game season they should offer the NFLPA 6 weeks of TC with more practices and a few scrimmages. Give the starters more legit practice time to get ready for the season. Use the scrimmages to evaluate rookies and depth and eliminate all preseason games.

This will be better for the players and the fans and the quality of play will improve during the early part of the season. Rosters will probably need to expand to about 60 players. Which will help the NFLPA accept the 2 additional regular season games for giving up the 4 preseason games.

Will either side go for it? Maybe. We’ll find out in 2020 CBA. 2 additional regular season games just has to be better than 4 pathetic preseason games. Thanks, Since ‘61

I agree '61. Only question does the owners and players realize how bad this preseason was. This is what both sides agreed to in the last CBA. They can fix this, your plan among others understands the need for preparation above all else. But the flaming egos only seem to care who gets to one up another. Hopeful, but dubious.

In those 4 preseason games, starters only play a half to three-quarters of a game, and it looks like the trend is to reduce those numbers. No way are the starters going to be in favor of two more regular-season games plus any additional padded practices, or practices of any kind.

TGR - you are probably correct. But I figure that’s about the best offer the league can make to the players if they want to get to 18 games.

The players are probably going to try to keep the season at 16 games and reduce preseason to 2 games.

Whatever they settle on more practice time is needed, especially for the starters before the season begins.
Thanks, Since ‘61

No depth in the QB and ILB positions. Very little in OL and DL. Better start praying to the injury gods.

OL and DL? Don’t see a lack of depth at either of those.

Boyle should be the Packers’ backup QB based on his performance in leading the offense to score TDs. He certainly has the skill set and potential to be as good or better than any other veteran backups out there who have not shown they can win consistently as starting QBs...hence they are backups.

Just having in game experience doesn’t mean too much if a QB is losing more than winning. In Kizer’s case he played a full season but was 0-16. If anything, he’s had his chance to prove himself having the experience yet could not out play Boyle even all that NFL experience. To not go with Boyle at backup QB would be a mistake.

To me, Boyle would be exciting to watch leading this Packer team if he has to fill in for Rodgers this season. Actually don’t think he would do much worse than 6-9-1, last season’s record.
