Packers 23 Lions 20: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers, somehow, some way, after not leading for a single second of the entire game, left Detroit with a 23-20 win over the hapless Lions.  They walk off with a huge win to finish 13-3 and a playoff bye week.

Winning ugly was on full display this week, almost as if the Packers were so tired of everyone giving them a hard time for doing it all season long and said "hold my beer".  I'm sure beer and booze sales spiked in Wisconsin from 12-3pm on Sunday.

On to the final regular season Game Balls & Lame Calls.

Game Balls

Mason Crosby

Game winner after an earlier miss and after last year's total clunker at Ford Field.  Automatic game ball.  Crosby also buried his kickoffs, leaving Detroit no opportunities in the return game.

Allen Lazard

Lazard ends up here for the image up above.  Another huge touchdown catch against the Lions this season.  Having to rely on Lazard to complement Davante Adams isn't ideal but with the group the Packers have, they have to take what they can get.  Thankfully, Lazard showed up.

If the Packers are going to accomplish anything special this season, they'll need Lazard to max out in the postseason.

Aaron Jones

1,000 yards rushing in 2019 is a 2019 game ball.  In this game, 25 carries for 100 yards and a huge screen catch and run late to set up the walk-off field goal.  Jones gave us all a huge scare when he went down earlier in the game but he returned to action.  A near miss on a few throws nearly got Jones into the end zone once again this season.

Jones will have to factor hugely in this postseason.

Honorary - Lucas Patrick & Jared Veldheer

Both filled in for Corey Linsley and Bryan Bulaga, respectively and while they're not starters, they didn't cause the offense to shut down.  Patrick, just a day prior, received a contract extension and immediately had to go out and earn it.  Veldheer turned out to be a good late-season move by Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

Lame Calls

Packers 1st Half

In a game where getting a big lead and resting starters was the ideal, this team allowed themselves one of their biggest deficits of the season.  Missed throw after missed throw.  Drops.  Missed field goal.  Poor tackling.  It was all on display in the first 30 minutes.

The 2019 Packers are hard to bet against as they find way after way to get it done and this game was the opposite of what they've done most of this season.  They're typically holding off a late surge to save a win but the shoe was on the other foot.  Add this one to the long list of ugly wins.

The Deep Ball

Aaron Rodgers threw deep time after time after time and none of them connected.  Down and distance mattered not as it seemed that the game plan, once down two possessions, was to bomb their way back in.

I didn't give Rodgers a lame call because he made some big throws late but the many misses earlier in the game tried my patience.  The Packers and Rodgers survived the 3-12-1 Lions but those warts are going to absolutely kill this team come playoff time.

The Matt LaFleur offense can't possibly be predicated on throwing deep that often with this group of receivers.  Rodgers stopped trusting his arm to make quick, short throws over the middle against the worst pass defense in the league.  Instead, he started chucking it up, reminding us of another Packers quarterback later in his career.

Others to mention:

  • Blake Martinez with a cleanup sack and an interception.  Za'Darius Smith slowed Lions quarterback David Blough just enough for Martinez to finish the play.  Blough terribly air mailed a ball that Martinez finally hung onto after so many near picks in his career
  • Davante Adams was just seven yards shy of 1,000 on the season.  He and Rodgers didn't always sync up in this game but he caught a touchdown and made a huge fourth down catch late
  • Jaire Alexander didn't play particularly well again but he's always thinking and despite getting flagged, he thwarted a Lions touchdown by tackling the Lions receiver
  • Geronimo Allison with another fumble
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling does so many frustrating things and then he does one incredible thing.  A very timely catch late kept him out of the Lame Call section
  • Playoff football at Lambeau in two weeks.  Enjoy the week off, everyone!

Game: Second half Martinez

Lame: First half team play—looked like they had drunk Flint tap water.

Super Lame: Dumbass Pete Carroll mismanaging the time clock, costing Seattle the win, and GB #1 seed.

Yeah, good call Jim,
However, there was also that missed P/I call at the end that everyone (except the Refs and 49er fans) clearly saw and New York did nothing about.
Like every Packer fan yesterday I was rooting for the Seahawks, and I kinda' believe Carroll lives right up near Al Davis on the NFL's list.

" However, there was also that missed P/I call at the end that everyone (except the Refs and 49er fans) clearly saw and New York did nothing about."

They said they reviewed it. And didn't see any reason to stop the game to change the call.

I hate complaining about officiating. It's bad all across the league. After that call, the Seachickens had another crack at it. And even if the call is made, that doesn't get the ball in the end zone like Seattle needed. It just would have made for a shorter distance and maybe another shot. But I don't know how the replay official can watch that replay and not see PI.

Hank, I agree it wouldn't have guaranteed anything.
But it would have put the ball back at the 1 Y/L and brought BeastMode back into the picture.
Again no guarantees, but another option the 9ers would have had to defend, making it a bit more difficult.
Spilled milk, that's all it is, the PI was clear.

Even lamer than that Houndog was Al Riverton & the NFL trying to BS the fans and insult EVERYBODY'S intelligence by saying the reviewed the play and it didn't warrant shutting the play down to review it further.

THAT was PI and EXACTLY why the damn rule was put into place in the first place. Once again the NFL has BLOWN it in front of God and everybody.

Once again I'm FORCED to question the credibility of the NFL. Once again I'm left with the lingering feeling or thought if the game is pure and not being influenced by the Officiating...Especially when you KNOW the NFL just lied to you with that BS explanation.

Nick the NFL no longer has any credibility. Look at the 6 NFC playoff teams and look at the #1 and #2 seeds. SF and Green Bay are the only two teams with a national following. Eagles, Seattle, Minn and NO have regional fan bases at best. SF and GB h provide the largest TV audiences. That means higher ratings and and more TV $$$.

Remember how NO got screwed by the officials in last season's NFCCG so that the Rams go to the SB, The beat goes on.

The DPI on SF was as obvious as Alexander's DPI against the Lions. We'll see how it plays out during the playoffs. Thanks, Since '61

Since 61’ I agree with most of what u say and if you follow the money trail you will normally find the answer. But, I’m not a Big conspiracy theory guy and would find it hard to believe the NFL tells the officials to call a game against another team. If that was true then don’t you think some retired officials would’ve told everyone about that at some point over the past few decades? I think so.

I don't know if the NFL tells officials to call a game against another team but when we see how it consistently plays out at the most critical times it seems really strange. I don't think the on field officials are to blame. But why have the guys in NY allegedly reviewing the plays and then doing nothing at the most critical point in the game. It would not have hurt anything if they took the time to call a booth review at that point. The coaches can't challenge so they depend on the booth review for their remedy. It just happens far too often.

It's crazy but this is another example of the Packers getting screwed by officials in Seattle. We could be the #1 seed and the Saints could be #2. Somebody needs to figure this out. Thanks, Since '61

The simple explanation is most likely the correct one. Spineless indecisive bureaucrats . NFL has set up a incomplete review system that they bring out to provide the illusion of fairness. Its TV time and they apparently dont have the time to get it right. You would think with all the technology at their disposal, that communication would not be a problem.

Good thing they are not air traffic controllers.

Not only did the league not use the rule they put in place in response to the Saints getting screwed last year but by doing so, they screwed the Saints again. They would have grabbed the #2 seed and a bye had the Seachickens won.

Now the 13-3 Saints, who might be the best in the NFC, play on Wild Card weekend with a win earning them a trip to the Frozen Tundra. Brees has fared quite poorly in the cold over the years.

As you mention, the Packers had a number of players that played well in this game. That said, enough others didn't so the question is whether it was on them or if they weren't put in a game plan to succeed. 171 rushing yards by the Lions is concerning.

Especially since the game plan should have been to stop the run and let the QB beat us. It just seems that the D line, especially Clark ,are much too often shooting the gaps and creating creases for the opposing running backs.

Agreed. Clark is good and he and Lowry had solid but not great games against Detroit. NO's has two pretty good interior offensive lineman and the third is okay. SF is weak there. Brees historically hasn't been good outside. Hard to say since SF whipped us pretty good.

Lost in the cussing and discussing of Aaron Rodgers is that the defense didn't show up either. One week after throttling a much better offense, the Packers gave up their most points since November to a team that was absolutely decimated by injury. In addition to being forced to play an undrafted rookie QB, their one remaining legitimate weapon went out early in the game.

I won't go so far as to say they were bad in the passing game. They did hold Detroit under 140 yards passing. But that is expected given that the Lions lineup included the kinds of players you'd expect to see in the 2nd half of preseason games. Hell, Detroit was just trying to run out the final 20 seconds of the half and they gave up 51 yards and a FG. The tackles they mad last week were missed this week. 171 rushing yards allowed was really, really bad.

Oh, and they committed 9 penalties to 4 by the Lions.

I blame poor tackling. The pass defense played well with a few big plays, but that's been the narrative this season. Last week, the Packers defense acted like flies honing in on a glue trap. They didn't miss anything, swarmed to the ball carrier and brought them down. This week was a bit different. Little holes that backs squeezed through, just being slightly out of position, bouncing off of the running backs, etc. Kerryon is a very good running back. No one is doubting that. But the rookie they have, Ty Johnson is it? He was electric for them. Pin-balling off of defenders and chunking up huge gains.

Tackling was the difference to my eyes as well. Reflecting on the Minny win, I was struck by how well they tackled. After being a poor tackling team for years.

This week, it was a regression. In particular, Savage whiffed on the long run right before half. If he brings down the RB (I don't know his name for sure either), they save those 3 points.

Nonsense. The Packers won ToP handily. That defense was not tired. They were flat.

Besides, they played much better in the 2nd half than the first. Presumably, there were some choice words in the locker room at halftime that woke them up.

The thing is, in today's NFL, holding an opponent to 20 points or less is usually putting your team in position to win.

I agree: the chunk plays they gave up were concerning, but the defense was good enough (obviously).

All things being equal, I agree that 20 points is the standard. But not against the JV Lions.

I'm not terribly surprised they started bad. This one had everything but Admiral Ackbar yelling "It's a trap!" Fortunately, both sides did just enough to make New Orleans travel to GB instead of the other way around.

"Lost in the cussing and discussing of Aaron Rodgers is that the defense didn't show up either." I can't agree with this statement in any form or fashion. You do realize Hank the offense turned the ball over on the Packers side of the field 3 times right? And that Detroit ended up kicking a FG on one of them deep in GB territory. They also scored on a gadget trick play pass to Blough. The only reason GB won, was because the defense showed up and held them to 10 points off 3 turnovers by the offense. And that was all in the first half. Once the second half started and the defense didn't have to pick up the offenses slack they shut Detroit down and held them to 3 second half points. Imho the defense showed up and balled out to keep the team alive. They showed up big time you just were looking elsewhere when they did I guess.

Pretty much summed it up Jason - good job.

Lame Call: To your first half reference, I'll add the 20 second field goal our defense gave to the Lions to end the 1st half. Totally inexcusable.

Game Ball: To the Detroit Lions who showed up and punched us in the face. Takes a lot of grit to play as hard as they did in a 3 win season. The Packers and Rodgers may want to recognize the gift of "wake-up" as they go forward.

Game Ball: To Brian Gutekunst for making a lot of important player decisions right down to the last weeks. Adding Ervin and Veldheer late in the season is a great finish to a strong rebuild in 2019.

Game Ball: To a Packers team that can't explain its good fortune reaching a first round playoff bye. Throw away the lipstick and accept that we are not all that pretty.

Good Gute yea. Bad Gute as well. Trusting Allison and MVS all season long. Maybe he can be excused for not drafting a receiver, but after they've proven to be two of the worst receivers in football, to still not find an alternative... and lame call to MLF, for continuing to trot them out there. Do they not watch the games? Rodgers frustration is obvious, Allison, MVS and Graham can't get an inch of separation or catch the ball like a true NFL receiver. They rank at the very bottom of receivers with at least 50 targets. Blame Rodgers if you want, but give him a slot receiver like Deebo Samuel and he'd be setting completion records again.

There just hasn't been many examples of teams finding a WR in the middle of a season that made a difference. It just doesn't happen unless you give something up. Yes, when the Cowboys picked up Cooper from the Raiders but they gave up a first round pick. There's too many needs on this team to make a trade like that. If there were other better WRs out there, NE would have tried them out, as they are in as bad a shape as GB. Even N.O. tried out several last week and didn't sign any. It's not that simple. They have some talent; they really lack consistency. I can't blame him for thinking they would get that consistency and by the time we realized it wasn't happening, it was too late to do anything about it.

They’ve got two weeks to prep for New Orleans (lets get real, Vikings can’t win that game). . If the weather is at all nasty, Brees isn’t going to be able to throw more than 20 yards downfield. Expect lots of trickeration with Hill. Expect Kimara to look for the gaping holes Detroit found. Maybe even expect to see Bridgewater some. Payton is going to pull out all the stops.

Game ball - a win is a win. Bulaga in concussion protocol made this even more important

Lame calls:

15 first down plays that went for 2 yards or less

I'll be interested to see if someone can dig into this rewatching the game. On the trick play, you saw Gary jogging down the field towards Blough as he was entering the end zone, he was the closest guy to him. On the second touchdown, the camera zoomed in on Gary, who was struggling to catch his breath after Kerryon Johnson ran his way for the score. Did the Lions intentionally look to run plays at Gary when he was on the field? Was the trick play his blown coverage?

Free safety has the role of covering the back side of that play or at least he should have in most defenses, especially since in this case the Packers were in man-to-man that usually leaves the free safety without a defined assignment. Maybe Pettine has someone else assigned to that role. Whoever it was, they weren't there. Really no excuse to allow that play to happen 2 weeks in a row. Thanks, Since '61

King was on Amendola. On the snap Amendola ran a reverse, making it a run. King should have stayed home to set the edge. Instead he sprinted towards the flow of the play. The QB ran right past him. At that point King should have known something was up. Not to mention Amendola wasn't going anywhere, the D had flowed to the reverse & it was bottled up. Sometimes you gotta know when to break off your coverage & cover a free runner.

I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that you didn’t see the play on this one. King has blown a lot of coverages but unless this one was pre-snap it looked a lot like man so he had to take Amendola all the way across the formation. There was no way for him to set the edge on the backside and the QB didn’t run right by him. I don’t put this one on king. The backside LB was most responsible. It was a good play by Detroit. It was early so they probably saw tape of backside LB not following QB fake so ran it when close or in red zone and caught in man-to-man.

You could even give a game ball to special teams, at least compared to the other two units the Pack put out there. And who would have thought ST would have come close to consideration just 4 or 5 weeks ago?

My take on the run D was that Patricia saw how effectively we were using Z in the middle to rush the passer. He saw how he was just blasting through a gap leaving big holes in the adjacent gap and game planed to take advantage of his aggressiveness. I haven't watched the all 22 yet, but that was my impression while watching the game.

Cubby, I wish I had the answer, although what would it matter if I did?

My gut feeling is lack of quality I/S LB play, while Martinez nearly always leads the team in tackles he's almost always 4-5 yards late to the party.
And then, when's that last time you heard the name of his counterpart on a TV broadcast? Where's (and who's) the 'other guy'?
I screamed for the Pack to sign T-Sizzle when he was cut so they could let Z-Smith run wild as a kinda' hybrid "Elephant' type position from yester-year.

Game Ball...Finishing 13-3...8-0 in the Division...1st round bye...Divisional Playoff Game AT Lambeau

Aaron Jones...Crosby...Z. Smith...Patrick...The DEFENSE!!

Lame Calls...The Slant and inside passing game disappearing from the Packers offense...AGAIN! NOT taking what the defense is giving them for about 56 minutes of the game. Go WATCH the Packers first TD drive towards the end of the 3rd quarter. THAT is what this offense is meant to look like for the most part.

Lamer Call...After getting the Packers back in the game with a short passing game, Rodgers went back to bombs away. THANK GOD the Defense continued to get the ball back in the final 3 minutes. I hope they don't try that against most likely Drew Brees because I highly doubt it's going to work out that well against them.

My lame calls: The interior rush defense and QB1:

The Packers mid-season rush defense showed up again after four weeks of playing well against the run. The common theme seems to be Clark, Lancaster, Lowery and Martinez play well against teams with weaker interior offensive linemen, but poorly against teams with above average interior lines. The only exception this season was Dallas which they stuffed despite a very good interior line. Detroit has talent at the guards and particularly at center and they imposed their will on the Packer D-line Sunday. Not a good harbinger for the playoffs as SF, Seattle and New Orleans can all run the ball behind solid O-lines.

Rodgers took way too many deep shots and wrecked the offense. Like the author, I can't believe all these deep shots were part of the game plan since MLF emphasizes a west coast, ball control offense. Rodgers needs to lose that very bad hangover from the MM days. Make the short throws and move the chains.

Maybe those deep shots weren't part of the game plan. Just MLF letting Rodgers have more freedom to run the offense. Like we saw last season. The run- pass ratio was more in line with what the offense did last year than this year.

I haven't watched a single live play all season due to equipment deficiencies. I've only been able to watch the ESPN graphic display during game times and I can't comment from an actual viewers perspective. But from what I was able to follow, I'm almost glad I never watched a game live. The Packers may be 13-3, but only two wins against winning teams all year, and the ones they won against sub .500 teams were way too close for comfort. I think it is going to be a tragedy if the front office thinks that our 13-3 mark is an accurate assessment of where this team stands. This team needs some serious improvements on offense and they need to quit smoking whatever it is that keeps them in a fog for the first 30 minutes of games. MLF has made some improvements in some areas, but he also has regressed in others.

We have one more game to play, but if our first game after the bye week is any indicator, we are gonna get whacked by whoever we end up playing. Let's see if MLF and the guys learned anything or if its same-old same-old.

For a person who hasn't watched any live play, your assessment is spot on. It has been a charmed season from the standpoint of the teams we played, when we played them and our relative health over the season. I would be more optimistic if the "coin had dropped" and Rodgers figured out the system and had us humming but that isn't the case - yet. If we are one and done in the playoffs, the hard look in the mirror will feature the under performance of Aaron Rodgers. And, as we know, he doesn't handle criticism well. It will be an interesting 2020.

i would give them credit for 3 wins against winning teams even if it technically is KC and Minn twice. It should not be too surprising that by the end of a season a team does not have a lot of wins against winning teams as the average record across the league by then is 8-8. Plus two of those three wins were on the road. That said you could not be more correct in that you never know what GB team is going to show up nor when they might. Makes for some pretty tense game watching and so expect the same thing against whoever comes into Lambeau next.

I don't understand why people want blow out wins ever single week. You can make the same exact argument for the saints, and 49ers. They played teams with horrible records all season long. not to mention since everyone seems to forget, THIS IS A FIRST YEAR OFFENSE WITH A ROOKIE HEAD COACH. Inconsistent is the best term because not only are players learning a new system, rodgers being at the top since he was in that MM system his entire career, but the Head coach is learning how to be a HEAD COACH and playcaller of the game. I don't know if you know but winning close games is a good thing for a team. It means you are battle tested. Blowing a team out every week does nothing for you.

" The Packers may be 13-3, but only two wins against winning teams all year"

That's not true. They beat two teams with winning records but they beat one of them twice. Two of the wins were on the road. If you add in the 3 games vs .500 teams, you get to 6-2 with 4 road wins. They had a pretty good record against quality opponents.

"and the ones they won against sub .500 teams were way too close for comfort."

This is the problem most have. Not enough style points against cupcakes. That showed up yet again yesterday.

Having said that, I agree with your assessment that the Packers need to get better. They won an inordinate number of one score games. That's a key indicator of regression potential. That they couldn't put away those cupcakes as well as you'd expect is another.

Winning teams, by definition, tend to win. When winning teams play each other, someone's gotta lose.

2019 record for playoff teams against teams with winning records:
Packers: 3-2
Eagles: 2-3
Vikings: 1-4
Saints: 3-2
9ers: 5-2
Seahawks: 4-4.

Bills: 1-4
Pats: 3-3
Ravens: 6-1
Texans: 3-3
Titans: 2-3
Chiefs: 3-3

I never felt the Packers would lose I was just waiting for them to wake up which took awhile, the penalty on Alexander was troubling, he should have been benched, I think MM would have sat him, Rodgers still directed the winning scoring drive regardless of the missed throws.

Are you kidding? The penalty by Alexander was brilliant. He was beaten, he knew it, and tackled to receiver to prevent the TD. He saved us points by taking the PI.

I think the penalty Lphill is referring to was the insanely stupid "pick up the guy and throw him to the ground" ala pro wrestling earlier in the game where Jaire had -stopped- the guy on 3rd down which would of forced a punt and instead gifted the Lions a first down that ended up giving them points. It was more than "troublesome" -especially since the league had made that type of 'takedown' move a point of emphasis this season. The tackle to prevent the TD was fine, he got beat and had to save a TD by getting the penalty. The other play was just plain stupid.

Packers are going to get killed in the playoffs. Rodgers no longer can save the offense and our receivers (except Adams) are slow, terrible route runners and cannot get open. Opponents in the playoffs will just stack the line concentrate on stopping the run and play man to man..... put the load on Rodgers to pass and we all know what will happen...... sack sack sack.

Since Rodgers can no longer save the offense, it is a good thing this Packer team doesn't have to rely on him to save it. That is true beyond a reasonable doubt, since they are 13-3 with Rodgers playing one of his worst seasons ever.

That they don't need him to be Superman every week actually makes the notion they have a chance with him under center more valid, not less valid. The defense and run game have shown they can hold up their end of the donkey now. He doesn't need to be ridiculously good. Just better than he has been for the last 2 months.

He still might be able to save it if he stopped holding on to the ball in order to go for the long ball. Lazard shows great hands and moves - though he missed getting his feet in bounds on that one sideline pass. And even MVS and Allison can catch the short ones (most of the time).

I just watched the post game AR presser. He said he was just off on Sunday but he felt good on the throws. He's hopeless. He's been missing throws the whole year and he still says he feels good about them.

So our chances in the playoffs hinge and MLF controlling AR.
I'm not betting on it. Just trying to stay hopeful.

"Jaire Alexander didn't play particularly well again but he's always thinking and despite getting flagged, he thwarted a Lions touchdown by tackling the Lions receiver" Sorry, I have to disagree with the "he's always thinking" comment by the author. Jaire had the Lions receiver STOPPED for a fourth down and instead gave them a first down for that ridiculous, unnecessary, totally against a POINT OF EMPHASIS by officials this season, wrestling pick up/slam down. If I remember that drive then resulted in the LIons getting a touchdown. THAT could have been the "Game Changing Play Of the Week" if the Packers hadn't won. I was standing and screaming, "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" at his play. Absolutely should be a "lame" for this game.
EDIT: Not talking about the tackle to save the TD, He had to do that. The other play earlier.

I still can't believe the Seahawks blew that game like that.
A delay of game with the ball at the half-yard line?
The zebras letting SF Fred Warner molest the Seattle TE on 3rd down? No flag? Are you serious?
Then the TE getting stone-cold flattened like he ran into a brick wall... all he needed to do was twist a bit & reach the ball a half of foot. That cost us big.

i don't know whats up with Rodgers and the long ball. its not like the receivers are well covered. they are plays that should connect if
Rodgers doesn't constantly overthrow them. is he afraid of under throwing it and getting picked off? does he need glasses? does he need to get some fundamentals back into his passing technique? it seems to me he throws a hell of a lot off his back foot and as he gets older, he can't get away with horrible technique. even the swing pass to Jones that would have gone for big yards was 5 feet over his head. maybe when they redid his contract they should have asked him to take a significant pay cut. he's been lousy.
plus, when he is struggling, he has that defeated look and he's grumbling about everything.

Rodgers is much more upset with himself than his teammates. He knows when he has made a bad throw. Although some times his just receivers have no idea what they are doing out there especially MVS and Allison.
They just run around cluelessly, they should both be chucked. We are a long, long way from Jordy, Cobb and Adams. We still have Adams but the other guys are just nothing. Lazard is coming along a bit but that's about all.

I think you've hit A nail on the head. AR has a phobia of interceptions and I am certain it effects his ball placement. I also think his age is now throwing that placement off even further. I think he could use a little 'gun slinger' in him, not full on Brett mind you, but just a tad. Brett could have used a little AR conservatism in his game, not a lot, but at least some. Combined, they could have been the best QB in history.

Aaron Rodgers as enigma.
If he's sincerely working to adapt to a new offense, if he's still adjusting to aging and life after injuries, if he's still dedicated to the game and determined to master intricacies of small ball -- then I'm still all for Rodgers.
Only the coaches and players around Rodgers really know -- but as fans, it's disconcerting, to say the least, to have Rodgers regress so stunningly in a week from the Vikings game to this game; and also to see that eventual first touchdown drive yesterday in its belated variety and effectiveness, and contrast it to so much of the rest of the game in its lame ugliness.
I'm patient with Rodgers if he is really, truly trying to change his ways and be a leader for this young team; but if he is stubborn, if he is unwilling or unable, then it's best for the Packers and him and the fans to allow him to go.
It may come down to something like Rodgers to the Raiders for Derek Carr and Hunter Renfrow (as slot receiver). I'd hate to see such a scenario, but we shouldn't rule it out if it's necessary. There has to be a courage to part ways if it's just not going to work out.
We can gladly appreciate this season as great for a transition year; but we can't take a repeat next year and remain in good health mentally and physically.
It all seems to be up to Aaron Rodgers as enigma.

Lame Calls: First play of the game. Perfectly thrown ball of 25 yards. Gliding through the secondary is the fleet footed one. Yes folks it's none other than our savior at tight end Jimmy. Yes folks, the very same , the highest paid tight end in the NFL.
Jimmy is going to set the tone. I sure hope that rookie named Rodgers doesn't choke again. What is this? A perfect arrow of a pass. Graham's eyes are the size of headlights. He has this one in his sights. Jimmy is going to set the tone for today. He will be relevant again. At the very last second a seagull drops a special package in his eyes. Clank.

Bahktiari and Bulaga reach down and peel Rodgers off the turf. Dave dusts Aaron off and turns his helmet 90 degrees so he is no longer looking out of his ear hole. Then he sternly says, "Damn rook, release the ball? Practice the rhythm method."

Mercedes Lewis cracks up. "Lord Jimmy runs the forty in 9.7 seconds. You two scrub tackles need to hold more often when Matticus the brain trust calls Lord Jimmy's number."

Bulaga turns to Lewis and says, "Damn Sea Hawks and their trained Sea Gulls."

Lewis looks deep into Bulaga's eyes. "Did you get your bell rung? We're playing the Lions, not the Sea Hawks."

They amble back to the huddle. There is a foul odor permeating the air. Smells like MVS may have a bad case of the runs today.

Opening drive 3rd down and whatever. Rodgers cradles his head and listens to Matt call the play. Rodgers shakes his head and the words blurt out of his incredulous gaping maw. "That ain't gonna work."

Matt gives Aaron the evil eye from the sideline. "You said you wouldn't be the problem Aaron. Just call the play."

Davante raises his hand and jumps up and down. "Throw me the ball. Throw me the ball. "
Aaron shakes his head and consoles Adams. "You're the decoy on this one, maybe next time."

Six Lion's defensive backs all point at Adams.

Rodgers settles under center. Just before the ball is snapped MVS lets loose with a massive shart. The wind propels MVS to a blazing 37mph in one step. Rodgers steps back and looks for Adams. Six defensive backs grab Adams and drag him to the turf. Rodgers gives the obligatory pump fake. The Lions d-back go crazy and beat Devante to within a heartbeat of his life. Rodgers notes that Lord Jimmy has thrown a tremendous block along the sideline. He has taken out all three members of the chain gang. Great block Lord Jimmy.

Rodgers looks downfield and shouts with glee. "I can't believe it, the play worked." Running straight down the field is MVS and he is wide open. Rodger's lofts the bomb to the perfect place where only MVS can catch the ball. Rodgers is smiling as two tons of humanity rolls over him.

MVS sees the arrow like dart flying straight at him. He accelerates to catch the winged gift. The arrow hits him smack in the middle of his chest and he grabs the Sea Gull and sprints toward the goal line. "Touchdown" he screams in joy. Right then and there he decides what he is going to do to celebrate before the cameras. How about a Ford Field leap.

Meanwhile the ball flies in a perfect arc and lands precisely on the chalk of the out of bounds boundary. The balls just lays there on the chalk. MVS is high-stepping it into the end zone cradling the Sea Gull. MVS sprints toward the Ford Field leap. His feet slip out from under him and he is clothes-lined by the railing. The poor Sea Gull is decapitated.

Bulaga is beyond himself with confusion. He sprints to the first referee he sees and tackles him. Bulaga is screaming,, "The Sea Hawks are cheating." The referee reaches for his yellow flag and his red card. Mercedes Lewis helps the ref up."Ref you can't give Bulaga a penalty, He just got his bell rung." Lewis waves at Bahktiari who helps Bulaga to his feet. Then Bulaga climbs on his back and Bahktiari gives him a piggy back ride to the medical tent.

The training staff sprints to MVS but Alien Lizard gets there first. MVS is delirious. "I caught it. I caught it."

Alien Lizard shakes his head. "You caught a Sea Gull."

MVS grins. "Same Thing. Same Thing."

Rodgers crawls to the sideline. He notes that Gute is talking on his phone. He hears the fateful decree. "Yep another three and out. How about we trade you Rodgers all our draft picks for Winston."

Game Balls:

Winning the game, going 13-3 and earning no less then the 2 seed. There was so much on the line for this game and while it wasn't pretty they found a way to win at the end. While they didn't know it at the time, they were 1" away from having the 1 seed. regardless the bye was the most important thing.

Winning "ugly" is still winning. Packers could have been the Patriots. They could have lost, been the 3 seed and would have been playing the Vikings this weekend.

Packers 2019 season. Lets not forget where we were the last 2 years. The last 2 years we won the same amount of games as we have this year alone. We earned a 1st round bye.

Lame Calls:

1st half/offensive woes/deep ball. All tied together. But at one point being down 17-3? That is just bad. Clearly this team thought this was a pushover game. At least they woke up in the 2nd half.

Seahawks losing by an inch. How they lost when they had first and goal at the 1 is crazy. What is crazier is having a delay of game and acting like they had no clue what was going on. They acted like they just called a timeout when they spiked the ball. Just a mess!

Fans constantly complaining. I have seen so many fans constantly complaining about this being a 13-3 team and having a bye. Packers have earned that, so can we get over this narrative that they didn't earn it. Lets not forget that we have a brand new offensive system, a lot of new coaches/players. Not many were giving this team a chance to even make the playoffs. We blew that away! So lets enjoy it a little!

Also, one of the complaints I have seen is they haven't beat any good teams... Sure when we look at their records now we can say this team and that team had losing records. But look at when the Packers played those teams. A lot of them had winning records when we played them.. Start with the Cowboys games.
Cowboys (finished 8-8) were 3-1 when we played them.
Lions were 2-1-1 when we played them the first time. Also, in the game they showed that stat that the Lions led in the 4th quarter in 6? games I can't remember the number now, but they fought hard!
Raiders were 3-2 when we played them.
Chiefs (finished 12-4) were 5-2 when we played them. (yes Mahomes didn't play but the same team without Mahomes beat the Vikings the next week)
Panthers were 5-3 when we played them.
We also beat the Vikings twice.

Notes:
The bye I think provides this team a huge boost. Not only will it be great for Williams/Bulaga/Linsley/Vitale, but also guys like Jones, the Smiths, Clark. These guys get a week to heal up their bodies more.
Also it gives LaFleur, Rodgers, and the offensive staff to come up with some things they can do differently offensively.

I saw Andy Herman post this late last night. But when the Packers play they will be one of the final 5 teams going for the Super Bowl! Crazy to think, but its true!

RC, Thanks for (as Bearmeat would put it) your "Sparkle Pony" viewpoint, lol. I can't remember a season where there's been so much negativity while we've been winning so much. I'll take an ugly win (and boy have some of these games been ugly) over a participation trophy for looking good and losing any day. Still love this team and I'm excited to see what's still left THIS season and excited for the future with all these youngsters getting even better next year! For now, we have the SB in our sights, a bye week and a relatively healthy team. Just like the mantra "anything can happen any Sunday" anything can happen any time you're in the playoffs. Not sure if we watched the same game. Rodgers Definitely deserves a lame ball. He Had at least six over throws. ESPN Stats had him at 16. You Cant't criticize the deep ball when the deep ball isn't being thrown accurately, he had receivers with a step over their mans, he just simply over threw him. ML was dialing up amazing calls most of the game, Rodgers was just whiffing them. Lets not get to the point where start calling out the game plan because the player can't execute, even if it is Rodgers.

The pass interference call has become a complete crap shoot in the NFL. In the Packers/Lions game Jake Kumerow gets called for what looks like a slight push off. Watching the SF/Seattle game and the Niners linebacker just about mugs the Seahawks receiver. No call. Did they even review it? What happened? Do we know? What a joke.

Yet today I don’t hear the whining like “the Packers get all the calls”. Maybe SF benefited from a huge missed call last night that clearly impacted the entire NFL playoff seeding?

GameBall: The entire team for waking up in the second 1/2. You win as a team. You lose as a team. The lions wanted to go out winners. The lame call is getting all over Arron Rodgers. Stop! Why can't these receivers catch the first ball thrown to them? Why does Bulaga get hurt so easy? This team has shown us nothing new. We have an older spoiled QB. He got back Adams, and thats who he sees. The size of the receivers are all different, with different Catch Radius". What to watch; Arron Rodgers throws differently to Adams then anybody Else. Stats are kept by Targeting now. He's throwing the ball away, because these guys just aren't capable. They don't lay out. Their effort has stunk since Adams came back. It's written all over Rodgers face. And until they want the ball. And do as he wants! He's going to be secure with it. And show frustration. Sure a lot has to do with the rush and confidence. Sure he looked bad on some deep throws. But even when he got it there, MVS dropped it. Who is capable after Adams? These guys know there will be changes next year. It's up to them to Help Rodgers and the teammates. Winning comes first. Not their paychecks.

Excellent post Stockholder! Totally Agree. MVS has no idea what he is doing out there either on running routes or on how to catch the ball. At least Lazard is starting to figure it out. The rest besides Adams are JAGS and that includes Graham. Thanks, Since '61

And yet, the longest stretch in 2019 where the offense was clicking consistently was while Adams was out with injury.

We forgot to give game balls to Amendola and Wilson! Thank you RC, Spock and Stock for some much needed positives. Most of us watched two very good Qb's last night miss many throws and hold on to the ball too long. Rogers has been inconsistent this year , but he still makes some great plays when needed. There ain't no bayou in GB, only frozen tundra!

Game Balls: MLF as a first year HC coming within a terrible non-DPI call by the officials in Seattle from having the #1 seed in the NFC and for whatever he told the team at halftime to wake up the Packers for the second half in Detroit. Aaron Jones, Davante Adams, Martinez and Jaire Alexander. Half of a game ball to Aaron Rodgers for bringing the team back in the second half despite having a different receiving corps on just about every play except for Adams. JK Scott and Mason Crosby.

Lame Calls: Half a lame call for Aaron Rodgers in the first half, defense for allowing the Lions to drive for a FG with 20 seconds left in the first half. Poor run blocking by the OL. Middle of the Packers run defense. MVS who just doesn't have a clue how to play in the NFL.

Honorable mention for Patrick and Veldheer who both did a solid job backing up Linsley and Bulaga.

Fortunately we have a bye week, we need it. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Just for a little context, let's take a quick look at Detroit's injury situation yesterday. This is who we almost lost to....

QB1 and QB2 – Stafford and Driskel, both on IR
LG – Joe Dahl is on IR
RT – Ricky Wagner, did not play
WR – Golliday went out early with a concussion and never returned. WR Marvin Jones and WR Marvin Hall are already on IR
TE – TJ Hockenson on IR
CB1 – Darius Slay, was in and out all game
DT – Mike Daniels went to IR 2 weeks ago
DT – A’shawn Robinson did not play.
LBs - THREE of Detroit’s top 4 LBs are on IR – Jarrad Davis, Christian Jones and Jahlani Tavai.

That’s nice. You win and move on. The Packers were down Jamal Williams and Danny Vitale to start. During the game they lost the starting RT Brian Bulaga and starting C Corey Linsley. At one point starting RB Aaron Jones was hurt and came back. We have been without Raven Greene for most of the season. Guess what? Nobody Cares.

Every sensible person admits that injuries matter. The Lions are missing literally one half of their preferred starters, including their quarterback, and you're saying something about Raven Greene, or about how Aaron Jones scared you but didn't actually miss any time. LOL. Ok.

I have a question, why do we substitute so much? When we do we can't run the hurry up offense and also the the defense can substitute.
When Rodgers was at his best we always ran hurry up and also forced penalties. The players can't be that tired or the defense would be too.
