Packers 21 Vikings 16: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers got their first win over the Minnesota Vikings for the first time in nearly three years and improved to 2-0 on the young 2019 season.

The offense looked to be coming to life as the defense continued to do more than its fair share to keep the Packers in the game.  But after getting up 21-0 early on, the Packers didn't put another point on the board.

It was another ugly game for Green Bay, but a win is a win and maybe we need to just start getting used to these types of performances.

Game Balls

Cherry Starr

Some may roll their eyes at this one but this woman has meant and done so much to the Packers for over 50 years.  As the Packers honored Bart Starr, Cherry was escorted onto the field by Brett Favre (in his classic ball cap, t-shirt and cargo shorts) and had a huge smile on her face.  No doubt she's still missing Bart but she's a strong and brave woman.  Easy game ball and feature picture.

Davante Adams

Adams was a huge factor early on offense, when the offense was actually working.  He had a game high seven catches for 106 yards, including a 39-yard reception on one of the early touchdown drives.

Adams was covered by Xavier Rhodes, who had just three tackles on the and and zero pass break up's.

Darnell Savage

Savage punched the ball out of Kirk Cousins' hands and also had a big role in the tip interception in the second quarter.  He had a few rough moments as well, but the rookie is already paying huge dividends as the first defensive back drafted this year.

Kevin King

A huge interception in the end zone late in the fourth quarter kept the Vikings off the board and allowed the Packers the chance to drain the clock for the win.  King hasn't made many big plays in his short career but this one came at the most ideal time.

Blake Martinez

Martinez had a game high 13 tackles and was all over the place.  It was clear that he was either very gassed or was hurting at the end and this was a gritty performance by the Packers linebacker.  On a day when the defense once again had to lead the way to victory, Martinez put in a solid day's work.

Aaron Jones

116 yards and a score gets you on this side of things.  Jones helped move the ball and run out the clock late in the game as well.  It wasn't the flashiest 116 yard day, but it was a good showing for a guy that many expect big things from this season.

David Bakhtiari

Bakhtiari missed Thursday's practice with a back issue and still held his post and gave up zero sacks on the day.  Everson Griffen sent his game-worn jersey to Bakhtiari after the game as a show of respect.  Game ball for sure.

Lame Calls

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarter Offense

Putting up 21 early points is a very good thing.  Expecting your defense to hold it for three quarters is not.  Between poor play calls, lackluster routes by the recievers and indecision by Aaron Rodgers, this offense looked very pedestrian for the second week in a row.

Minnesota's defense is very good but the Packers were facing a depleted secondary and back up's on the offensive line.  A win is a win, but eventually the inability to move the ball and score is going to cost this team a game.

Ball Protection

Geronimo Allison converted a first down and got stripped on his way down.  A bad snap to Rodgers resulted in another.  Typically turning it over twice against a good defensive team is a bad recipe but fortunately, the Packers forced four turnovers of their own.

Whoever Called for Jimmy Graham to Block Danielle Hunter

The result was expected and it was bad.  One of the two sacks the Packers gave up on the day.

Matt LaFleur Challenge of Thielen Catch

It wasn't anywhere near conclusive that it was a drop.  The ball didn't move in Thielen's arms despite hitting the ground and that's an easy call that stands.  Sure, it's the NFL and they've been known to baffle us all with a ruling but again, LaFluer makes a bad challenge in the second half.  Just like last week in Chicago, it left his team with only one timeout for the remainder of a close game.

LaFleur, you'll show up on this side of the list until you figure it out.

Others to mention:

  • It's easy to get in Jaire Alexander for the touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs and for dropping an interception late in the game but Alexander also had two passes defensed on the day.  If he wants to be an All-Pro, he has to make those plays.  Still plenty of season for him to improve and come down with those
  • Dean Lowry was all over the place in the first half.  The decision to extend him is looking like a wise one
  • Elgton Jenkins played a fair number of snaps at left guard and if he grades out well, he should take over the starting role.  The Packers used a second round pick on Jenkins and the obvious expectation is that he becomes a regular sooner than later
  • JK Scott had another long bomb punt of 59 yards to flip the field when another offensive drive stalled.  I am hoping Scott stops making this column after this week
  • Kenny Clark had a sack and disrupted a lot in the middle.  His numbers won't often be very flashy but he quietly had a big role in keeping Minnesota off the scoreboard

I would add Bulaga to the Game Balls list. He deserves a lot more recognition then he gets.

Kenny Clark pretty much is a given at this point for the list. He is a beast in the middle of the defense. He drew a couple of holding calls against the Vikings rookie OC.

The one thing that I don't agree with is the "Matt LaFleur Challenge of Thielen Catch"

LaFleur didn't have a whole lot of time to decide to throw the challenge flag on this. The people telling him to challenge that obviously saw that the ball hit the ground. It was definitely worth the challenge. If that ball had moved at all, and he didn't challenge it everyone would be criticizing him on not challenging it.

As of right now I am hoping that Rob Demovsky's report late last night "Darnell Savage, who left the locker room in a boot, got kicked in the shin and is not believed to have a serious injury, a source sad. The Packers will put the rookie safety through some additional tests on Monday just to make sure" is true.
Raven Greene's injury looked bad so hopefully they caught a break with Savage's. Savage is becoming a key part to the defense. He forced 1 fumble and had a pass breakup which deflected into Smiths hands.

RC, I watched the Thielen catch several times. That challenge is the MOST deserving Lame
Call, to me. Yes ball touches the grass BUT never moved in his arms and that’s an obvious catch the way they’ve described it of late. And after last week’s other boneheaded challenge, leaving just 1 timeout for a quarter and a half, he’ll get one every week

Last week I think the challenge was more to give his guys a quick rest while the play was reviewed. I believe MLF is a savvy guy and there's more to it than just challenging a call. The D got a chance to get a breather and regroup, longer than a normal timeout would have given, and it slowed the Vikes momentum a bit. If it happens that the play gets over turned that's just a bonus. Coaching is a game of chess and his moves are calculated. Nothing boneheaded about it.

Jason,

The hard part is in the moment there is what 35 seconds at most to decide to challenge it. LaFleur is likely relying on guys from a booth to tell him to challenge it. In real time its harder to make that decision. I don't fault him for that. For us, we get a few minutes to see all of the replays to see what happened. And lets not forget that was a huge play. I believe it was 3rd down and they picked up 30 yards? I can't remember exactly how it played out. I thought it was a good challenge given the amount of time they have to challenge it.

I get losing a timeout was a bad thing, but I'm more concerned with the timeout they called earlier with Rodgers then that challenge.
Last weeks challenge was a boneheaded no question. But this week I don't view it as a lame call.
Just my opinion though.

I agree with RC. The call had to be made in quick fashion without the benefit of watching it over "several times". He was relying on the information he had at hand. In the end, it was a tough call. I also wouldn't really say it's worthy of a Lame Call.

Good call on Bulaga. He also quietly had a great game blocking Khalil Mack in the opener, yet no one seemed to notice. Are we taking him for granted? Is the front office taking him for granted? He is a top 10 right tackle in the NFL when he's healthy.

It was a good challenge because it disrupted the queens momentum and gave his defense a quick breather. Both defenses were putting out ultimate effort The ball did hit the ground ,but Thielen ( who was an RFA at one time, Ted) made a solid catch and looks to follow in the steps of Jordy Nelson as a big time receiver. La Fleur understands the Game.

Starr’s are as classy as they come. Good point Irish. All point on on game assessment. Losing Greene could hurt. Off topic- Chris Carter on first things first is getting to be annoying. Must only be a two team league. Cowboys and Patriots. They barely mention the Packers or anyone in our division. No different then all the other shows. Thank God for some Packer sites. Go Pack!!

On play to Diggs on the goal line yes he had a chance to deflect, but given where he came from to try and make play. WOW, great player that is young, Kevin King got burned on that route made up for it late in game, like the group so far still tackling needs work.

Savage and Amos both blitzed on the play. King couldn't have expected safety help. Jaire was playing deep right zone and when no one entered his area he hightailed it over deep middle.

I totally disagree with LaFleur's challenge being a lame call. That came on a 3rd Down and if he wins it then that gets the Packers off the field. I would say it's slightly more likely that it would not be reversed than be reversed, but the ball was moving beforehand, touched the ground, and then he dropped it afterwards. In fact, it probably wasn't a catch, although I get why they didn't overturn it. Part of challenging is not just the probability of winning but also the impact of winning and that challenge was just fine. And instead of complaining about the challenging leaving the Packers with only one timeout, how about complaining about the first wasted timeout because players don't know how to line up right.

It is very rare that Rodgers belongs in the "lame ball" category, but his self described bonehead error of thinking it was first down when it was actually fourth down could have cost the Packers the game. It was effectively another turnover and likely took points off the board. Hope we don't see that one again.

Yeah, coach said afterwards that he could have called a timeout, but my thought was 'how do you let your offense just go for it on 4th down without your permission?'.

I feel like he should have been running on the field calling timeout, but maybe that's the deal he has with 12... if he sees something, go for it. Obviously we know 12 didn't see something, he admitted to the mistake

I'd like to see the first down stats for the Packers yesterday: consistently getting 5 and 6 yards on the ground on first down. Second and 3rd down after the first quarter were hard to watch.

They showed a stat that the Packers were 4 of 4 on 3rd down in the first quarter. They finished 5 of 15.

Game ball: to give one to a short series of plays, loved that call that turned into the Williams TD and how they set it up motioning Jones and throwing to him in the flat for a nice gain a couple plays before, then used the same look to get the Vikings D moving to that side before dropping off the middle screen to Williams. I think this is a snapshot of the kind of offense we were hoping to see with LaF behind the wheel.

Game Balls: Aaron Jones for 100+ yards and helping to run out the clock at the end of the game.
Davante Adams for a big game.
Bakhtiari for his warrior effort and playing through his injury
Entire OL for a solid game except for Lane Taylor
Clark for another strong performance on the DL
King for his pick
Entire defense for hanging on for 3 quarters

Lame calls: MLF for not kicking FG from Viking 25 before the half. Take the points, especially after Cook’s big TD run gave the Vikings life. Getting stopped and subsequent Viking FG could have become a huge momentum shift in the game.
Linsley’s poor snap and general confusion on the play resulting in the fumble. Professionals should be beyond that at this point?!?!?!
I have previously posted that Linsley needs to do a better job on his shot gun snaps. Need to get better on 3rd down. 5 of 15, I believe that we only converted on one 3rd down after the first quarter.

Note: Some of what we are seeing is early season sloppiness from lack of preseason play and some is due to a new HC, new offense and many younger players in major roles on the field. Last season we probably would have lost these first 2 games instead we are 2-0 with 2 division wins. If the team stays healthy these issues should improve. Also, some credit goes to the Vikings who were about to be blown out of the building but they made a game of it after the Allison fumble. Fortunately our defense stood tall. Broncos next. Go Pack Go! '61 Taylor has become the bright shiny object to beat up now. In reality both Lindsey and Turner had equally bad games being rolled in pass pro. Madison or Jenkins should have started in the second quarter for either player over the bad footwork issues and pad level alone//. (sigh) No. Taylor is not the problem in a offensive system that is functioning well below 50% to date. Interior three need time to work the new scheme. Gee, folks are so antsy..

Fangio and the Broncos are going to be tough to beat as they were skewered by the officials when the Bears player went down with no time on the clock and the officials put one second back on the clock to allow the Bears to kick the game winning FG. They are 0-2 and felt robbed. Not a good combination to play against. The roughing the passer penalty on Chubb, should have made every Packer fan wince remembering the Clay Matthews hit on Cousins to nullify Jaire's INT, last season. I'm hoping we can play a lot better this week than we did against the vikings. If we do, then we should win easily.

Game ball....LaFleur play call on the last drive....run, run to Jones 2nd and 8, first down....run to Jones for 4 yards, then possibly play of game, instead of an obvious run play on 2nd and 6, he does play action to Adams on short middle quick route for first down! Without that first down and if the Vikings were to stop us on 3rd down, they would’ve had over 1 minute left on the clock. The effective run plays brought LB closer to LOS giving play action a highly successful chance.

Game ball goes to the running game, the defense and Davante. Very nice running scheme which was consistently blocked well and executed by Jones and Williams. This allowed us to win.

Lame call is Aaron Rodgers, he looks very mortal. Holding onto the ball WAY too long, if it continues this he will get hurt again. He made some good throws but not close to the Rodgers we are accustomed to seeing. Take the check down Aaron you are 36.

I observed what the offense is capable of, and I love it. It still needs work, but I have a new confidence in the system we have been hearing about. I call it the McVanahan system. LaFleur in his press videos stated that the run game is important to the offense. Aaron Jones ran for over a hundred yards. Williams had about thirty yards. Devante Adams was Devante Adams. Continue to clean the play up. The game plan has been solid.

The defense was impressive. In retrospect, they were on the field way more than they needed to be. Three quarters of all out performance tends to wear people down. Martinez had thirteen tackles. Through all of that, they created turnovers and disrupted the opposing offense.

Special Teams need work. I wait for the flags to fly. I cannot remember when a returner was penalized for blocking after a fair catch was signaled. Davis is not new to this position.

The Packers have the potential to be great. The next three games will test the Packers. How will they perform?

I found myself thinking the same thing, that the defense looked tired. I was shocked to see how uneven the time of possession was, and in GBs favor. The defense came out strong at the end, a great thing to watch compared to years past.

The lack of awareness Davis has shown in his career is exactly why I would not have kept him on the roster

Hoping Shepherd can see the field soon. Davis had a chance to break the seam on the third PR, if I remember correctly, but does have the burst or will to go for it. Don Beebe's son made the Vikes as a UDFA and showed the same verve and attacking nature as Dad. Have to get a quick twitch player on the field.

Game ball , Defense , some lame calls but I think the offense is a work in progress , they are feeling things out, I think they learned Graham can’t block , and they must do better on short yardage plays , I think it will start to come together and take the pressure off the defense.

Why is nobody saying it? Aaron Rodgers is now a better than average game manager - the QBs in the NFL are throwing the ball all over the field. Aaron Rodgers can barely manage 200 yards. He no longer takes any risks - will not throw a WR open anymore - is afraid to throw the ball down field unless a guy is wide open.

He needs to increase his INT count so that he can unleash this offense. 35TDs and 8INTs is way better that 25 and 2. He needs to develop some of the gunslinger mentality otherwise this offense is going nowhere.

He looks pedestrian to me compared to the other QBs I watch on Sunday.

Could it be that other teams have more weapons to work with? Did you not see those beautifully placed balls that Davante and MVS were dropping? Increasing INT count is giving the ball to the other team and giving the opponent more chances to score while taking away your own chances to score. That is just foolish and will not lead to winning football games.

So let's break it down - here are the teams with the best offenses so far:

NE has - AB, Josh Gordon, Edelman, Sony, White, Burkhead
KC has - Kelce, Hill, Watkins, Hardman, Williams. Other than Kelce they all
run 4.3
NO - has Thomas, Ginn, Cook, Kamara, Murray
LAR - has Kupp, Cooks, Woods, Gurley
DAL - has Cooper, Cobb, Gallup, Witten, Zeke
MN - has Theilen, Diggs, Cook
ATL - has Jones, Sanu, Ridley, Hooper, Freeman
PHI - has Jeffrey, Agholor, Ertz, Howard

They all have more than 1 legit playmaker at WR/TE and a good RB or 2
GB - has Adams, Aaron Jones and then who?

Lame calls every week for the lame WR's. This offense will remain stagnant until Allison and MVS are replaced and we find a legit #2 receiver. They can't get open, Rodgers gets blamed for holding the ball, and even if they catch it neither has the ability to pick up yards after catch because they're both stiff hipped and can't make cuts. Watch Allison's cacth over the middle, yes he caught it but it was rounded off and slow. Both need to be subs.

Rodgers was cautious. The #2 Wr isn't Allison. He'll beat a Zone only. MVS Is improved, but he must want that ball. If he only wants to catch it. Put in Davis. I want MVS and Davis outside. Adams in the slot.

I thought our new offense was supposed to help our wide receivers to get open?
I'm wondering if there's more creativity this year in the offensive formations and motions, and then in the combined routes on any given play.

2-0! I would have bet good money against them being alone in first place come week 3, glad I'm wrong.

Watched the game in an entire household of vikings fans (in-laws). After the preston smith interception I hear 'what the hell is that guy doing back playing coverage?!'. Welcome to the Mike Pettine show Vikings fans, he's going to be here for awhile!

Loved seeing their first round pick get blown up and called for holding.
Loved seeing MLF intentionally attack the vikings weakness coming into the game (multiple DBs injured/out).
Loved watching Diggs be the attention seeking individual he really is and costing his team points, that'll go over well in that locker-room.
Dan Bailey deserves an extension.
Cousin's was Cutler-esque yesterday

I'm going to be on the lookout for an analysis of what happened in the offense in those final 3 quarters. Is it bad route running? Can guys just not get open? Is Rodgers making poor decisions? I'm guessing if the team does a better job of holding onto the ball the result isn't so day and night

Dropped balls, missed blocks on the 3rd and short runs, great plays on the ball by the Viking defense, especially Harrison Smith, missed pick by Jaire. Did I miss anything? Close game both ways.

Also... Green Bay needs gunners. A team with a good punt returner is going to do damage. Scott is going a great job, but our guys are 15 yards away when the ball is caught.

I liked Arron Rodgers passing yesterday. My concern was he held onto his wrist , and massaged his thumb area later. Didn't look like he got hit. Also I didn't like Summers getting called for penalty on the sidelines. Also. Mvs must want that ball and shield it from the defender. He must learn keep it away from the defender. The ability of a great Wr is to run after the catch. Adams learned it. We need it from the others. Jenkins should have started. Why can't I see the FB on short yardage? BENNET AND GREEN, GOT THE TOUGH YARD. Why do they only use one to block?

Game ball to Kenny Clark. The center shouldn't show his face in public after the beat-down he got.

Just goes to show why a team should not spend a 1st rd pick on a Center like the Vikings did. What a wasted pick...and 18th overall too! We found a Pro Bowl center from Ohio State in the 5th round named Corey Linsley.

Nothing says professional like these kind of things

You're almost a Bears fan, IL. Trolling a Packers website (and then posting a clip that validates my point, which you sarcastically and passive-aggressively tried to counter) and living in IL. Might as well take the next step?

My Lame call is for the officiating. So many flags, are they getting paid by the number of penalties? And when they do call a penalty they all get together and discuss it for minutes. Let them play, the game is getting ruined by ticky-tack penalties.

I think some credit needs to go to the coaching staff for that fast start. Looked like they had a plan and the team executed it. After that the Vikes D adjusted and imposed themselves for the simple reason they are better than the Pack O, at least right now. So I am encouraged that the coaching staff has the goods to design good stuff and that will just increase with time.

To all those arguing that the offense needs time to get its rhythm, anyone notice that Antonio Brown had four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown after one practice with Brady. Allison and MVS had 7 catches for 44 yards combined after two years, a preseason in the new scheme and a game (where Allison didn't get a ball thrown to him once). My hope is that MLF and Gute don't wait on obvious decisions as long as TT and McCarthy did. At least give Davis and Kumerow more playing time just to see what we've got. There may be a star there, there isn't in Allison.

How about a game ball for AR completing the game sealing 1st down pass to Davante with Barr right in his face - how's that for revenge.

I just came back from Green Bay and it was another great experience. Fans were really into the game. Packers defense is exceptional. Of course, they do have things to work on. Need to limit big plays. Offense was awesome...in the 1st quarter. After that, need lots of work. I think it’s coming.

I thought it was a nice touch and gesture by Brett Favre to escort Cherry Starr. I have great picture on my phone of Cherry, Brett and Aaron Rodgers. Great day.
