Packers 2020 Draft Day 3 Targets

This has easily been one of the more unpredictable Packers drafts of recent memory.

Everyone proclaimed this draft to be loaded with wide receivers — the same position that the Packers had a need. We are through three rounds and nary a wideout has been taken.

So what does that mean on the final day of the draft?

First of all, it means that the Packers will likely take a wideout at some point today. The Packers have still have six picks of draft capital, but because of the first round trade with Miami that sent picks No. 30 and No. 136 to South Beach, Green Bay doesn't pick until No. 175.

That isn't meant to give you pause. There are still impact players on the board and the Packers have plenty of flexibility to move up.

1. Troy Pride, CB, Notre Dame. I like Pride because of his frame. He's 6-feet tall and isn't afraid to be physcial. His awareness hasn't been consistent this year, but he had an excellent week at the Senior Bowl. "Pride had an up-and-down career at Notre Dame, but he made himself a good deal of money with his performance at the Senior Bowl," said a scout. "His 50 percent win rate in the one-on-ones during the week of practices was the highest of any defensive badck in attenance." The oft-injured Kevin King becomes a free agent in 2021 and the Packers need depth on the back end.

2. Tyler Biadasz, OL, Wisconsin. I'm really surprised that the Biadasz is still available. He started all 40 games of his career in Madison and earned the school's first Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's best center. Corey Linsley becomes a free agent in 2021, but Biadasz could easily start at guard. Many teams have been scared off by his pass blocking and his offseason shoulder procedure, but those things shouldn't negate his football intelligence and his leadership. Remember, the Packers love versatility and that's exactly what Biadasz brings.

3. K.J. Hill, WR, Ohio State. I liked Hill so much I thought there was a chance that he would be taken in Round 3. He's only 6-feet tall and ran a 4.6 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, but what sets him apart his he is an excellent route runner. He can knife his way through any defense and he's great operating in heavy traffic. The player that he reminds me of is Randall Cobb because of his intelligence and his wilingness to make any play and his body control to make it happen. Hill would be a tremendous slot receiver and he would be a big help to Aaron Rodgers as his next safety valve.

4. Kenny Willekes, DE, Michigan State. He finished his career in East Lansing with 26 career sacks, good for third-most in school history. That's pretty amazing, seeing as how he started his collegiate journey as a walk-on. "The thing that sticks out to us is that when you do your research, he comes from a wealthy family," said a scout. "His dad is a super successful physician. Yet the kid still has hunger. That tells you that money won't change him because he comes from money and has the hunger of a broke kid. Relentless, never stops. The motor keeps running. Seems to be very teachable, so the things that need to be fixed, there's no concern that they will be." That should say it all right there. He's hungry and he's coachable. What else do you want from a rookie?

5. Jauan Jennings, WR, Tennessee. The red flags went flying all over the place after he put up a 4.72 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine. Just remember, the Underwear Olympics are just a small piece of who these guys really are. Teams want football players and that's exactly what the 6-foot-3 wideout is. At the Senior Bowl, he did whatever it took to beat opposing defensive backs and everyone quickly took notice. "Jauan is truly, truly unique, said director of the Senior Bowl, Jim Nagy. "Going back in time with scouting receivers there is not really a good comparison for him, at least that I have done — that is that physical, that aggressive with the mindset. His play-style is unique, especially with the ball in his hands. He is a junkyard dog. You talk to the guys up at Tennessee, and he he has been a really good special teams player for them. They think they could play him at safety on defense." Who doesn't want a junkyard dog that does whatever it takes to win? Also, Jennings fits the bill as being big and versatile and he forced more missed tackles than first round pick CeeDee Lamb. With some Rodgers guidance, he could flourish.

You know who might be worth a 6th round flyer? AJ Dillon. Or Josiah Deguara.

Adams, Jones, Sternberger, Dillon, Deguara all step out on the field.
DC plays small - you go 2 TE with Jones and Dillon in the backfield... power run.
DC plays big - Deguara to TE, Sternberger/Adams outside, Jones in the slot, Dillon as a lone back (can run/catch/block).

Substitute Funchess or Lazard for any of those skill players (other than Adams) and you still have the same situation.

Think the offense needed a slot guy to run WR screens and Jet sweeps? Get open in the middle of the field?
Drafting Dillon and Deguara just gave that to you... his name is Aaron Jones.

If you don't see how this is evolving... you're not paying attention.
Flexibility.
No longer is it - "my guy needs to beat your guy".
Now it's - "no matter how you play us, you're wrong".

Love this draft so much.

Visionaries.

Imagine thinking a small ILB (who would also be a backup) is more important than a QB with first round talent.

The mistake you're making is thinking that the draft is for filling holes.
Accumulate TALENT.

1st rd QB over 1st rd ILB EVERY DAY NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE!

Wow thats crazy, because that whole BPA philosophy that Ted Thompson used for all those years - while not filling holes, got us almost consistently exploited by teams that stayed better than us by filling their needs via draft!

Stupid me! Yeesh. And its the craziest thing because I keep watching teams that are better than us and will continue to be, draft for need. Its the damndest thing.

Yeah Stupid you! When your drafting at the end of the round in every round and every year there isn't generally a BPA available. You get to the point at the end of Rd 1 that all the players from 20 or so to 50 or so are basically all the same grade. That being the case yeah, you choosing between player A w/ a grade of 6.5 that plays a position of need and player B w/ a 6.5 grade at a position of non need. That being the case, yeah you take the player that plays the position of need. This isn't rocket science... I would have thought you were aware/smart enough to understand this. My mistake I guess!

But what if every player is graded 6.5 except for the QB who just dropped to 26 who you and your scouts have graded as an 8.5?

You still gonna draft the 6.5 ILB?

They obviously don’t love Queen. If they do hit on the Love pick, that’s your next decade and the team is not so mortgaged to Rodgers. I think the rationale is pretty clear, whether we like it or not.

It sure looks like last year was the go for it with the existing set up window. These are all so far about the future shape if the team and the cap. I infer that there will be more changes and maybe some trades in the wake of this draft if the season goes ahead. It could also reflect a belief that it probably won’t. Either way, this team is looking to the first half of the 20s, not this year.

Also - a rookie OT (picked 26 or lower) would be Wagner's backup.

Keep an eye on Leglue picked up late in season. They thought enough of Nyman to protect him in season. There are some young options beyond Taylor, Patrick and Madison on the O line.

I see us taking maybe 2 WRs, an ILB, a hybrid S and a Tackle candidate and a run stuffer DL. I’d be happy with that mix anyway.

We have enough picks but I’m not sure how many if the above make it to us and, absent a trade of a player, we need the picks we have.

No. Several more have gone. That's the problem with waiting from 94 to 175. Lots of guys go in that very long gap. That's why Gute should not have traded up to secure a guy that can turn around and hand the ball off.

Except that’s not what he traded for him to get. If that turns out to be Love’s ceiling, clearly shouldn’t have picked him at all.

This is not a draft for this year: look at it that way and it starts to make sense. The team is committing heavily to change and planning for the future in LaFleur’s image.

Something changed in terms of their appraisal of their options after Rodgers’ extension it seems. His contract structure is the one piece at odds with heading this way this year, unless they do not expect a season.

Cory I hate this draft so far. But Guty can save Face by doing two things. Grab Evan Weaver LB, l'jarious sneed s/cb for the defense. Take Quiz Watkins WRs and Jeff Thomas WRS. for the offense. And I didn't; really want to Draft OL, but with a new QB now coming in. Bahk and Linsley will get. Bredeson, Biadez, are the best alternatives. { And if by chance he has a shot at Quarterman ILB Albert Okwuegbunam Te, or Fotu. Nah- that would make to much sense. }

Drafting a WR after passing on 17 already, would seem counter-productive to the Gute premise of tying everything to the run game. Surely, drafting a top WR could be tied into the run game and if not, why waste any late round selections on a WR that is likely much less talented to be tied into anything. Nothing to take now but OL and DL and hope they can be made and tied into something for the future run game offense with an obvious decision to decrease the passing game regardless of having Rodgers for 2-3 more years at an exuberant cost just recently created by the same FO who now appear wanting to phase out of the offense. BRILLIANT!!!

At 175 or later, any pick is not likely to succeed. That's just historical average. It really doesn't matter where they look for the lightning strike.

They have found Aaron Jones, Corey Linsley and Micah Hyde in the 5th in the 2010s. Andrew Quarless was the only other name of note and that's not much of a note.

In the 6th, they found James Starks in the 2010s. Their only note-worthy 7th in that decade was Lawrence Guy, who found success in NE.

That's about it for the last decade of 5-7. Not a pretty picture.

Not really, only so many running game pieces. Taking a WR or two now doesn’t seem at odds with moving to a roster tailored for LaFleur. I do agree, Rodgers’ contract is the very jarring note. I can only assume that either the balance if power changed or their assessment of the chances of winning with Rodgers arm.

Cory,

I appreciate your perspective and others’ perspectives on here. In your last column on WRs I guessed that GB would not take more than 1 WR and maybe none in rounds 1-4 because it seemed MLF wanted to install his offense with more 12 and 21 looks. While they may take 1-2 WRs, it seems to me that right now a run blocking OL or DL runstuffer are the priorities with the 5th round pick (or 4th if they move up). Then need a depth ILB.

Hope Coldworld is right about possible development of Leglue or Nyman etc all.

Some likely large cap casualties are coming in 2021:
Bahk, Linsley, King
In 2022 Rodgers is traded?
We might be strapped for quality replacements or depth if the Cap is not increased with a recession coming (see comments section from Cory’s last column on that)

Hoping BG and MLF use the picks today wisely.

CAG123,
I’m with you to look for trades. But they would be wise to try finding a sucker GM soon who will make those trades. With possibility of a truncated season (or no season this year), it would be an impulsive overconfident GM to sign a big FA for one year control before getting closer to the fall to know if there will even be a season. Too bad the Dolphins already drafted an OT but hey maybe they want a former all Pro at an “offer you can’t refuse”.

I think Gute is business savvy enough to push those deals but I do like that he has a heart and cares about the players as people too. Sad whenever Bahk and Linsley go but yeah if they can trade them go for it while showing respect and at least having a personable zoom mtg face to face with the player to explain.

The one saving grace of this draft is that everyone hates it so much. Usually in that type of situation, I tend to believe conventional wisdom is wrong. Maybe if I knock back half dozen shots of the 190 vodka we're using to make home-made hand-sanitizer, I can actually begin to believe that is true.

l believe the proof of this direction Gute has taken, by ignoring upgrading high scoring potential, maximizing AR's last few years for a RUN first team strategy success will be demonstrated by the Dolphins rebuild strategy in their next 2 seasons.
Their tearing down the team systematically in 1 year to have 5 first and second rnd picks plus Cap money, grab Tau as QB and several potential top starters. That's what I hoped Gute would do 5 years from now instead of shitcanning AR in 2-3 yrs from now for a running first team that rarely wins much in todays passing game.
Not to mention boring to watch compared to Packers, KC and Seattle.
Remember Pack has made an exciting living as a high scoring team for over 25 yrs, even with a dysfunctional GM ignoring FA. I thought Gute's change in FA would lead to even better things until this draft.
I expect Pack to miss playoffs this year and if I am wrong will gladly eat crow.
Packer fan since days of Lombardi who remembers the 70s-80s and doesn't want to see them again.

With the Rams on the clock with the pick Gute gave up for Love, I would have picked either Prince Tega-Wanogha or Donovan Peoples-Jones.

DJP is not my favorite WR prospect but he's got the biggest upside left on the board. at the same time he carries a little of of the "workout warrior" stigma.

The Prince has the tools to be a starting OT in the league.

Anyone else want to throw out a name for the "Jordan Love Opportunity Cost Slot"?

lol. You have become a parody today. The only reason I said his name is because he meets them so well. As fthis said, it sure ain't because he was spectacularly productive in college.

Every year they end up with 10 picks and half of them are 6 and 7 rounders. then they trade to move up and give away with their 4th round pick. I'm done with Gute and this horrendous day 1 and day 2 crap. Needs at WR, ILB, DL, OL and we got zero. QB, RB, HBack. He's obviously not planning on winning shit in the next 3 years until the Golden Boy develops. Now we are hoping that the bottom of the barrel guys are great...fat chance of that.

The WR’s targeted in this article are a joke. Don’t we have enough receivers that run 4.6 and slower. Being a great route runner is fine but you need some separation to go along with it and a 4.6 isn’t going to do it. If we don’t get any value on day three this was a wasted draft with the exception of maybe the Dillon pick and round two.

With 8 picks to go in the 5th round these players are still available:

Prince Tega Wanogho OT
Evan Weaver LB

Hope they take flyers in the 6th on one of these players if they fall that far:
Donovan Peoples-Jones (Bigger Slot)
Darnell Mooney (fast WR, for change of pace, PR, ST)
Harrison Hand CB
David Woodward LB

Netani Muti OL as UDFA? (Hope he doesn’t rupture another Achilles?)
Marcus Bailey LB UDFA? (knee injuries)

Time will tell but the teams I feel had the best draft: Baltimore, Bengals, Cowboys, Lions, Vikings, Colts, Chargers, and Jets. Baltimore and Vikings helped themselves to be a better playoff team.

Don't go giving the vikings any love, now. They had a bazillion picks and now they get to thin the herd, if camp ever happens. I trust Spielman will screw things up, per usual, and will soon be over the cap again wondering where his defense went. Look for more turf injuries, as well. I hate seeing good players go to Minnesota only to have their careers shortened because of turf injuries or from glass panels falling onto them. Skol!

For the "ILB is a bigger need than WR" crowd, congratulations on getting your wish. The Packers did indeed draft an ILB before they drafted a WR.

I know most guys here tink the saw a need at WR. Watch the games, even without St. Brown. There is no need at WR!!! No need there!!!! and that not even from a SC perspektive......
There is no need at WR!!! No need there!!!!
There is no need at WR!!! No need there!!!!

Better teams have way less there...…...…..... and a better passing game!!!!

Kamal Martin LB is a compliment player who can play the run not coverage backer. I can get behind this pick as there is a hole in the depth at LB and it is not much of a reach. At least we know BG and co. do see most of the positions of need on this team. Here’s hoping Kamal is not just a ST player or other LBs already on the team take a leap up in ability.

They are clueless. But not because they reached at 175. There is no such thing as a reach at this point, IMO. They are all full of warts by now. It's all a matter of how you overlook them.
