Packer Update: Welcome To the Party

I genuinely like Packer Update. It's well written and they seemingly have some actual connections or friends with connections inside the Packer organization, which gives them some great fodder for their not-to-be-missed-by-any-Packer-fan "Shhh...Here's What We're Hearing" feature. (Though, to be honest, it's pretty clear they just throw some stuff to the wall and see what sticks - but they have nailed one or two things over the last year that make me think they have some actual sources as well)

All this said, it's about time the Update joined the party regarding Bob Sanders. Posted back on the 7th of February, this post echoes my earlier thoughts (posted on January 23rd) about Sanders and how McCarthy will be hard pressed to win a championship with such a predictable scheme and coordinator on the defensive side of the ball. The Update also makes an additional point that I wish I'd thought to put down in pixels - they point to the fact (as I did) that the Packer's scheme hasn't won a Super Bowl since Dallas in the 90's and point out (as I didn't) how incredibly talented those Dallas teams were on the defensive side of the ball as the last, great team to be stockpiled with talent before free agency robbed elite teams of the ability to go four or five talented players deep at almost every position.

So take note, Packer fans, and do not be alarmed if Thompson uses the majority of his resources, both in free agency and the draft, on the defensive side of the ball. Because without an over abundance of talent on defense, Sanders and his predictable scheme will not be able to get the job done against the better teams in the league.
