Packer Update Starts A Rumor

I've been critical of Packer Update for being rumor mongers who hide behind anonymous 'scouts' when all they comment on are things any fan with a television and an internet connection that dedicates a healthy amount of time to doing so could write.

As near as I can tell, they took it up a notch on Sunday by 'reporting':

Nothing is imminent, but the Packers are at least exploring the possibility of signing restricted free agent William Gay to an offer sheet. The ex-Louisville star, who started 14 games at cornerback for the Steelers last season, was tendered at the original-round level last week. So any team that wants to acquire the 25-year-old would have to give up a fifth-round pick in next month’s draft. Gay is neither big (5-10, 190) nor fast (4.6), but he’s tough, instinctive and familiar with Dom Capers’ style of defense. He’s also a good special teams player.

Near as I can tell, this hasn't been mentioned anywhere but Packer Update and has now been linked to all over message boards and forums. It will be interesting to see if this pans out.

I've heard this rumor for several weeks now but nothing has come to fruition. If we have to wait so long to find out if he's been signed or not, it shows how much "interest" the packers really have for him. Btw packerupdate also reported that with the D. Martin signing, Bush could see the door this offseason. I really don't like getting my hopes up too much.

Oh my...we want to sign a small, slow CB? That makes a lot of sense. Maybe we can jettison Al Harris and/or Charles Woodson. Let's start Gay and Bush! :D

I'm also not all that impressed by the rumor-mongers. Good post, Aaron. :)

I was banned after four (4) posts on Packer update for calling them out on their supposed 'sources' and pointing out that thier source constantly 'opines' about everything. I had far more posts moderated that never saw the light of day. You could turn Packer Update writing into a drinking game when they use the word 'opined'. You would be wasted after two blog postings.

They apparently moderate any/all criticisms, especially when you point out where they're factually wrong.

Saw a lot of the Steelers last season - they tend to be my game of choice when Green Bay aren't playing. In no way would I be impressed with signing Gay. He was really shown up by the lack of safety assistance when Polamalu was missing.

The Steelers' fans like this kid almost as much as we like Jarrett Bush...
Just a rumor, though...

I've read Packer Update for years and 90% of what they write is about the team and not rumors. I've found their player analysis to be incredibly accurate over the years. They've praised little known players well before those players became household names for the Packers. When is the last time CheeseheadTV did that? I get a kick out of reading this site from time to time, but for in-depth and accurate analysis, you aren't in the same league as Packer Update. Not even close.

Jayson - I would have no problem with Packer Update if he would just use his own name and stop hiding behind supposed 'scouts'. I've said on many occasions, I actually find his commentary rather compelling, but I am completely put off by the 'as a former scout said to us' - just give your damn opinion! We all watch the same games. We all read the same coverage.
-
As for praising "little known players" - you mean like last offseason, when he said Alfred Malone would be a HUGE surprise and big beneficiary of the switch the the 3-4 defense? Um, yeah. Malone was cut a little while later. Throw enough bullshit against the wall and some of it is bound to stick. At least I sign my name to my bullshit.

BS, Jayson. Packer Update deals exclusively in rumors. The take the 'rumors' that are floated out there by jouranlists and package them up as, "we learned from a former scout" or, "an insider close to the matter has told us." They are utterly full of crap.

How much integrity do they have when they feel the need to MODERATE comments constantly and/or ban people that point out factual errors or conflicting CONFIRMED information?!?

Nagler runs a BLOG where he gives an opinion. He doesn't disengenuously try to package it as fact by pretending he has an insider giving him info. I'm guessin other people in the 'blogosphere' have figured this out based on the heavier traffic here and the minimal commentary/traffic there.

I don't mind PU's anonymity. If you name your sources, they won't be sources for long, especially under TT.

I think we can all agree that protecting the anonymity of sources is critical to maintaining a legitimate source, but why was I first moderated and then basically banned when I began pointing out how similar some of the anonymous 'scout' statments were to that of other articles (both in terms of timing and content)?

Maybe I'm turning into a cynical person as well, but hand-waving away the coincidence is a bit too trusting.

I was neither rude nor contentious in any way.

Dunno. This site's been pretty fair as far as that sort of thing.

Aaron, just have to mention that I am glad I came across CheeseheadTV. I really enjoy reading Tom Oates articles in the Wisconsin State Journal, but his material is only available maybe once or twice a week, sometimes much less in the offseason. Just wanted to let you know that now I look more forward to your next article more than Mr. Oates. Keep up the good work.

I think its a given that the Packers are "at least exploring the possibility of signing" every FA and RFA in the league. I'm sure Thompson has a file on every single one of them. Its not a rumor, its common sense.
