Nope. If Gray were the guy, LaF would've never offered to Leonhard.

Like I said before, Jim Leonhard isn’t leaving to coach when he doesn’t have power to choose his own coaching staff! Jim said “it was not the right time for me to go back to the NFL” maybe code for “Right Situation”!
You guys made a good point about big ten running vs. the NFL being more of a passing game.

Leonard is probably in line to replace Chryst (age 54). HC for Wisconsin ain't hay either.

Pettine and Leonard are good friends, so he knew what the situation in Green Bay was before being interviewed. Leaving a program that is on the verge of being top 5 for the three plus years for one with no job security... I don't see that. (I mean Bucky has a QB who in three years will be a 1st rounder in the draft and puts them in play for the Div 1 College championship. And being a future HC is not bad too)

No offense to Wisconsin fans but the badgers have zero chance at the college football playoff unless they can recruit at a top 5 level on average over a 4 year period. That is the case for virtually every single playoff participant. Badger football is irrelevant on a national scale based on tv ratings and high end talent. They are a nice story when they start strong until they play a loaded team like Ohio state or Bama - pretty much every college team is in that same boat for now.

Who cares who whether the Pack's Defensive Coordinator is Dom, Pettine, or some other re-tread/second choice like Joe Barry?

I've read this week on Cheesehead how Degaura is gonna take the offense up a notch, Jordan Love was a great draft pick, and how the Packers organization remains the envy of the rest of the league.

Time to start pumpin' the hope for that return trip to the Super Bowl just like the last 10 years.

Man, Kenny, I understand it's been a pretty tough last 18 months for all. Regardless of where you live, get outside and get some exercise. Read a book. Listen to some music. Call a friend.

What I've learned over the last 60-some years is people who haven't healed their own wounds tend to bleed all over everybody else. When everything is wrong, the best place to look for answers is in the mirror. Good luck, buddy.

I'm baffled why CHTV is basically ignoring this whole topic and we are getting articles about cutting Amos and Jace Sternbergers future when the direction of the entire defense is a stake.

It’s a conspiracy.

Here’s the reality: The majority of the guys we’d like on our Gameday 21...the defense guys who suit up for games...are already under contract. Only King will need to be replaced, unless we cut guys. The expectation is that Barry will get better results with mostly the same cast. Immediately.

Joe Barry is the new DC, he has been given the job from reports on another Packer site! 2 Retreads and we are supposed to improve? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

(ESPN via leak from Lafleur's camp)Lafleur and Barry are old friends, and giving that the time frame it came down to someone who Lafleur was 'comfortable' with. Word around the league called Barry 'well below average' as DC. Would have been better off with Gray if he wanted the job. Oh well....

By all accounts, the Packers are better off with Gray exactly where he is.

Yeah, hiring two coaches in a tight window would be tough. Still, I think he would have been a fine DC for this team. (Not that it's going to happen)

I never heard of Joe Barry, but I'm skeptical about judging his hiring based on "word around the league."
I'd be more interested in what you may think about Barry, flackcatcher, and other fans here -- especially if they have some personal observations and impressions and insights, or even some second-hand information not based on unknown sources.
Ultimately, though, we have to hope that MLF wouldn't make a bad decision on such an important coaching position based too much on friendship and familiarity.
I'm also wondering why MLF would have a "time frame" to make this choice. What would be the hurry?

Don’t need “word around the league”...his actual performance in his 4 seasons as DC speak for themselves. Highest rated defense was 28th. 28th! Now, it was the Lions and the Redskins so some argue those franchises are poorly run so cut him some slack. Problem is, elite DC into matter the talent- ever do that poorly. They can scrap together a solid defense - scheming around talent - to not always be one of the worst 4 defenses in the league every season. This is a horrible hire. There is no way around it.

Well, Barry's record as DC speaks for itself. Most of the front office people I talk to had very little to say good about him as a DC. My friend called him a downgrade from Pettine when we were talking who might replace Pettine six months ago. The way modern pro football works, the DC is pretty much his own HC on his side of the field. Teams have been leery of hiring a third tier like Barry mostly because of the reputation he built among the players. With the very short cycles teams have to compete getting players to buy in is critical. We'll just to see how this plays out...

You'll have to remember that Nathaniel Hackett is a "retread" also, jettisoned by the Jags, but the results have been pretty good so far in GB.

Yes RETREAD, but not with in the system as he was before! Don't see if he learned from LaFluer how he will do or be much different was my thinking! Most guys if not all are retreads but from some one eles's influences! Lets hope the guy is an astounding success! Wouldn't like anything better!

Jack Del Rio is also a "retread", and he's had success at various stops in his long career, including his latest one.

However, Sean McVay selected other candidates over Barry twice to be the DC of the Rams. Barry's previous two stints as DC don't inspire much confidence, but he has more talent to work with this time around.

The two things that need to be fixed right away are: 1) playing with a normal/reasonable amount of aggression, and 2) teaching the players how to tackle, both individually and working together in tandem on the field.

Do people think Hackett is calling the plays? He isn’t. He should get very little credit for the success of the offense. Every great offense team this year had their OC get head coaching jobs or get interviews for HC jobs. Hackett got none. Says a lot.

My first though was of Joe Barry Carroll, so I'm relieved the Packers didn't hire him. It's probably time to dust off your best "Joe Barely Cares" jokes and warm 'em up.
