Charles Woodson still had something left but as usual the frugal Packers thought otherwise.

Great last point. It would seem to be the same situation with coaches and managers.
I remember reading, years later, Ron Wolfe saying he made a mistake not resigning Bryce Paup .

The "better a year early" mantra is different from just misjudging talent (Heyward/Hyde), and particularly applies to players that would require significant resources to retain.

You can't pay everyone, at least not for more than a year. And, to go all the way, so many things have to break well that you can't depend upon it.

I think there were some rose colored glasses on a few of the guys that left. Nick Barnett was not a great player. He was Blake Martinez 2.0. Sure, they'll get a lot of tackles but the tackles will be 4-5 yards down the field.

I also think you're thinking about the move wrong in regards to Jon Ryan. You can't look at the replacement and say Ryan was better than that guy so we made the wrong move, you have to look at how good was the player that left? Ryan was average. There's nothing wrong with letting an average Punter go, the issue was not being able to find a replacement. That's exactly why I'm in favor of Drafting P's and K's as well as other ST's positions btw, because you can get the best player at his position (or close) for a late Day 3 pick when all you would've taken otherwise is a guy who likely gets cut and stashed on the PS if he clears waivers. These ST's Draft picks often last with their team for 10-20+ years.
