Pack-A-Day Podcast - Episode 388 - Building the Perfect Packers 53-Man Roster

On today's show, Tyler and Mike work through building the perfect 53-man roster for the Packers.

Tyler Grzegorek and Mike Wendlandt use what they've learned from the first half of training camp and the preseason to break down the current roster, building the best 53-man group they can for the 2019 season. They outline their entire process, position by position and come to a consensus about which guys will wear the Green and Gold, and which are on the outside looking in.

It is all a crap shoot at this point about who may make the 53 roster with two preseason games to go. We all know there will be a few more likely injuries to come, and a possible trade or two. Plus, the Pack may pick up a player.

All in all thought you did a nice job! There are going to be some tough cuts and hope most of best make PS. Will be honest your cutting Ty Summers and Lazard for Mercedes Lewis who at best doesnt play after 2019 is hard to swallow, as I see high probability both these young players are snatched off the PS after their body of work. Moore not making it makes sense but bitter pill to swallow because we all know the potential upside for possible stardom is there.

Holy Hanna some tough choices as well as you cutting Lancaster and Looney not making the 53. Ouch!

Thanks for the kind words! It was definitely a difficult exercise (part of why it's a longer podcast than we anticipated it being), and I do not envy Brian Gutekunst at all for the decisions he has to make. With so many talented guys at the bottom of the roster (Lancaster, Looney, Lazard, Moore, Summers, Sullivan, Fadol Brown, Trevor Davis, etc), it'll be a bittersweet end of Camp.

But, I do think guys like Summers and Lazard have a good chance to make it to the Practice Squad. As fans, we tend to overvalue our own guys since we see them more and more often than not, our "high profile" cuts end up still with the team in the end. The most likely claim I think of the cuts would actually be J'Mon Moore because of his potential.

If I followed along correctly, the released players are:

OL: Pankey, Nijman, McCray, Patrick, de Beer;
WR: Jmon Moore, Trevor Davis;
QB: Boyle;

DL: Lancaster, Fadol Brown;
OLB: Ramsey, Markus Jones;
ILB: Josh Jones, Summers*
CB: Sullivan, Ento;
S: Jamerson (Campbell to PUP);

* Summers makes the team if Burks goes on IR for the rest of the season. If Burks can come back by say game 8, Summers is released with a promise that he will be signed to the 53 after cutdowns, allowing GB to have Burks make the 53 and then go on IR with the ability to recall him to the 53 in 8 weeks.

PS:
2/3 OL: 1 OT, 1 OG. Nijman/Pankey; McCray.
1 WR: Moore
1 QB: Boyle
2 DL: Lancaster and Brown
2 CBs: Sullivan and Ento
1 ILB: Summers

0/1 open spots on the PS. McCray, Lancaster, Moore, Sullivan, Summers, and Patrick all have at least some chance of being claimed on waivers. I'd say McCray and Lancaster have a good chance of getting claimed.

I'd swap out Crawford for Summers, and promise Crawford a spot on the 53 assuming GB puts Burks on IR with the intention of having him return this season. Lazard, Redmond and maybe M. Lewis don't make the team. Keep Sullivan, Lancaster, and the better of Pankey/Nijman. Lotta of camp left.

It is a tough ask for McCray (and Patrick for that matter) to go down from making $645K to $136K. Of course, GB could elect to pay them (and Lancaster, even Boyle) more than the $136K minimum.

You left Lazard out on top but added him at bottom.

Reynaldo,
2 corrections from your list:

In the podcast they had on the 53:
McCray and Fadol Brown

So on their PS would be Patrick and Looney (if they clear waivers which would be unlikely)

I had problems following along with them. I wrote down what was said, but then the second person to comment said something different, and then sometimes they decided to agree on fewer players and later came back to that position and added players.

Surprised about Fadol Brown. He just returned to practice today. I don't remember the podcasters mentioning him as someone who would make the team. Not going back to check.

Davis won't get cut. I see 7 Wrs. Bet Summers refuses to go on the PS. I would after the way the DL played in that last game. Same with Moore. Fadal Brown will make the 53. Josh jones trade coming? He's been to quite. As long as he stays quiet . Keep him.

Thanks guys for the analysis. IMO I think they keep Boyle on the 53 since he had a spot last year as well, unless they pick up a veteran off the waiver wire. M. Lewis should definitely make it for his blocking. I wonder if Jimmy Graham could be a surprise cut saving 7+ million dollars. ILB is our weakest position which we never seem to value as highly as we should. Look at the impact that Darius Leonard had for the Indy defense. It may well be our Achilles heel this year.

interesting take. Boy you guys really garble quickly...if you were beer drinkers it would sound much more slurred, but good job overall. For me, i wouldn't speak too much of what players did as far as performance was in college as the NFL is quite different. Sorta surprised you had the road grader (Lewis) slipped in with the last choice. (MM just didn't know how to get the most out of his TE's and that's not arguable) Please consider writing an article about what the new staff brings (renewed energy, creativity, accountability-though no snaps yet) vs the complacency and same ole of the MM play calling/favorites etc. IMHO, this new group is going to make a difference, esp with the offense--no more idiotic play calling on 3rd/4th down! thx.
