Knowing the locks is a part of trying to calculate the final 53...............but the difficult part is trying to determine the fringe guys, the second and third teamers.

Crawford, Bolton, Summers, Moore, Shepherd, T.Davis, T.Carson, McCray, Madison, Pankey, T.Boyle, Gilbert, Looney, to name a few.

Rodgers
Vitale, Jones, Williams, Williams.
Adams, Allison, MSV, ESB, Kumerow, Davis.
Graham, Lewis, Sternberger, Tonyan.
Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Taylor, Bulaga, Jenkins,

That's 21. Room for more O-lnemen and one more QB.

Clark, Lowry, Lancaster, Gary, Adams, Martinez, Smith, Smith, Fackrell, Gilbert. Room for two more.

Secondary of Amos, Savage, Greene, Williams, Alexander, King, Jackson, Brown. Room for one more active, one more on the 53, two more on PS.

It would create $2.5 million in dead money to cut Lane Taylor. A good vet who battled through injuries and who usually gets his guy blocked. It’s a mystery to me why we’d make a move like that.

No point moving Taylor now. The more veteran presence, the better on the O line.

Ok, but it'd save ~11 million the next two years and we just spent 4/30 on Billy Turner, we used the 44th pick in the draft on an interior Linemen(you pick a guy that early, they almost have to start). So you have those two guys. Then there are several others who look capable. Pankey, McCray and I think Patrick is going to be a good linemen(though it's often hard to tell early on as both Sitton and Lang were much maligned early in their respective careers).
Taylor was very solid in his first year starting after Sitton was cut, but he fell off last year and wasn't very good and the Packers are going to be facing a very real salary cap crunch in the near future. Kenny Clark alone is likely going to get 5/75. They may also have to break with the norm and actually extend Bulaga another couple years after this season, provided he can stay healthy. You don't want to go with a rookie or an unproven backup at RT with an elite QB entering his later 30's.

If the difference from Taylor to Jenkins is negligible, go with the young guy and save the difference.

I see your point on the two year spreadsheet, but he doesn't quite make the 11M savings. There is pro-rated bonus cash counted etc. I like Jenkins to move into a starting role, but Taylor is good value to cover the inside and a push at LT if necessary. I would keep him onboard.

Taylor would save $3.1M for 2019 (Post June cut = dead money in 2020) and a saving of $4.55M in 2020. Total cap savings would be $7.65M over 2 seasons.

$7.65M ain't hay and Taylor is probably tradable, but I don't see Taylor getting released. The last time GB dumped a proven OL was in 2016 when Sitton was released. Lane Taylor obligingly stepped up, played pretty well (not as well as Sitton would have) and started all 16 games, so TT didn't get much, if any, criticism. Fans didn't notice too much that when Lang went down for 3 plus games, Barclay (1 game) and Spriggs (2 games) had to come in and were subpar, Taylor would have gotten those snaps. Assuming Sitton held up for 16 games. If Lang and Taylor had both gotten hurt for a few games, TT might have been criticized more heavily after fans got a look at Barclay and Spriggs as the starting OGs for a couple of games. Teams can perhaps scheme around one weak link in the OL, but it's hard to scheme around two weak OL on opposite sides of the line.

Pretty good list Old School. I might have might have removed Gilbert from the locks and also J Williams and Davis.

J Williams only because I’m not sure how his injury is progressing. If he is healthy he would be on. Davis for the same reason, but also because I think Shepherd is really pushing him.

Let’s hope all those named get or remain healthy!

I’ve decided to add Summers at ILB.

We’re going to have to release a good WR unless we trade.

5 on gameday: Adams, Allison, MSV, ESB, Davis (returner)
1 more on the 53.
2 more on the PS

I think Lazard and Shepherd have PS eligibility. And it puts Kumerow on the 53.

Us Packer fans in recent years tend to year after year rate the Packers WR's talent higher than they really are. It is true!

Having said that I have never seen a tougher positional cut down for the Pack than this year's WR's. I really believe this years WR talent is for real. They have so many young big and talented WR's that can run. I keep running different scenarios with different WR's on the team over and over in my head. Barring injuries I believe the Packers will likely lose a couple young talented WR's. I just hope the WR's who remain on the team were the correct choices.

If I had to pick one player who could credibly back up in the slot or either side it would be Kumerow at this point. For that reason he should be on the 53 in my opinion. That is not to denigrate EQ. I might start EQ before Kumerow depending on who was out.

I would just go with Shepherd as the returner. Far more natural slot player in my view. I confess that my opinion of the prospects for short, willowy burners is pretty low based on experience.

Physicality of games is very different to practice and fast starters with size to back ups. Shepherd is more diverse in terms of what he can do. Darn shame Davis hasn’t been able to get on the field to prove me wrong though.

Shepherd should make the 53. Davis is on the shelf , again. You need a quick guy out there among the long striders.

18 Locks on Offense. Must have a 2nd QB and probably 4 more OL (5 would be easier). 23 now. One more WR (talent is there to justify it), one more OL (some developmental talent might be deserving) and as a luxury one more TE.

19 Locks on Defense. Must have a 5th DL, a 3rd ILB, and a 4th safety. Now 22. A 6th DL (talent is probably there to justify it), a 4th ILB (is Bolton worth it?), a 7th CB (is Sullivan worth it?) and a 5th safety would be nice.

Good podcast. It certainly sharpens the focus.

"de Beer with de Hold."

I laughed when I read the tweet above by Aaron Nagler. I probably wouldn't laugh during the regular season, mind.
