Thanks for the look at the Safety class, and I like to see the options for the other rounds, but I wish people would stop hyping the idea of wasting our first pick on the position of safety. Number 1, the only way Branch gets picked before the middle of the 2nd round by any team is if we are dumb enough to do it. There is no Safety worth picking in the first. In addition to Branch not being the best fit at Safety for Green Bay, there are probably 5 other Safeties we could pick in the late 2nd or 3rd round or later that would be the right fit for us, and we get to use the first pick for more pressing needs.

Not to mention the TE, Edge, WR, and DT choices are now all pushed back and we get lower quality players to choose from. The sweet spot for drafting Safeties like the kind we need is 3rd round, not 1st.

We can get one of the 3 best TEs in this draft by picking that position first. That is getting the most bang for our buck and will help Jordan Love and our offense stay on the field longer and score more points. Which also helps our defense by not being on the field as long.

By drafting a top 10 WR with our 2nd round pick it does the same thing as stated above by drafting TE.

Or by picking a top 10 Edge with the 2nd pick it improves the pass rush which improves the back end as well.

Please don't suggest or encourage shoving weaker needs above the biggest needs and ruining our draft.

The real question you need to be ask is, what position that we choose to address with our first pick will improve our team the most. Since we don't even have a starting quality TE on the team now, and it will help Love be successful which will help the offense and defense, TE has to be the pick. Especially if we can find a trade partner to move down for more picks. Picking any player @ #15 lessens our chances to fill most of our biggest needs in the first 3 rounds.

Top 3 TE? You mean our pick of the litter! We’d almost certainly get THE top TE on our board!

I’m not convinced there is a single safety in this class who is better than our backups, like Innis Gaines.
That’s how bad this safety class is.

We’d be much better off drafting a CB.

I agree this Safety class is not strong, but there are several that would help us more than Branch, and we could get Battle, Johnson or Skinner in the 3rd round. At least we have NFL caliber CBs on the team now and one of them is top 3 in the NFL. We don't have one TE who could start for any NFL team right now. CB is another position we can't push ahead in the draft because then it lowers the level of players we can choose from at the positions we really need.

Andy, I apologize to you for jumping the gun and ripping on your podcast. I had just read another article about should we draft an OT with our first pick and I was pissed off about it. It seems like there is a new article everyday about what GB should spend their first pick on and since we only have one right now, we shouldn't waste it on picking our 4th biggest need. If I had actually listened to the podcast, I probably would have calmed down and posted better.
Picking a Safety later when Battle, Skinner, or Johnson will come off the board and are better fits for us is a much better strategy for GB and keeps us on track to fill our needs with the best players available at the positions we need the most. I realize you can't set in stone that we are picking a WR with this pick or a TE with this pick, etc. If there was a gamechanger Safety available @ #15, I could see taking him there, but there isn't. And we could pick the best TE in the draft with our first pick which fills our biggest need, plus getting the TOP TE from a super strong class.

Again, sorry for flying off the handle. Keep the info coming. Thank You.

I wonder why he didn't say anything about Battle or Skinner? Most draft gurus seem to like those two the most for GB. I would have liked to hear his assessment on them. It sounds like Safety is coming late this year. Maybe thats our #1 need next year. And add LB and OT too.

Thanks for sorting it all out. Excellent presentation. I see it as we have three critical needs in this order TE, Edge, DL and fourth would be Safety. I read various sources and only know what I read, What is certain is that opinions vary. What bothers me about Branch is his 4.68 speed. Frankly, I think Quad Brown or Sidney Brown (both from Illinois) look better in round 3- 4. Sydney's only questionable problem is he is only 5'10. If he was a few inches taller he would be top 20. He also runs a 4.47 and tackles well. He had a fantastic year at Illinois.

Our drafting a Safety, let alone one this high is courting disaster.

I think the pack should pick like three guys at 15 and see if anyone notices. They can just start whistling and walk out the building. LOL

Good one Jack. I needed a laugh. We will need 3 if we keep shoving lower needs ahead of critical needs. Yeah, we need a safety. but not in the first round and definitely not Branch. He is not any better than someone we could get in the 3rd round. So fill our top needs with our first picks. TE and Edge.

We are not going to contend for anything this year so we should just stay the course and rebuild the team. The Safety class will be one of the strongest position groups in 2024. That will be the time to take a Safety early. Not in 2023.
