If ( heaven forbid) ar is still with gb might as well take branch because he would not use Mayer anyway , BUT if this is love time in gb take Mayer in first than battle in second

Sydney Brown of Illinois is a great S prospect who can play all over the defensive backfield. I tend to prefer him over Battle because of tackling and instincts and versatility

Andy, you talk a lot about Lucas Van Ness and his lack of starting experience. Just want you to recall Clay Matthews and his lack of playing experience prior to the Packers moving up to draft Clay. Lucas is killing it at the Combine and I believe he is going to be a great player. Be interesting if you compared Clay's and Lukas Combine numbers.

The question is an Edge at #15 the Packers biggest need? Maybe it is but does the talent available match up with the Packers biggest need at #15? Would that Edge player be the BPA at #15? That is what I want to see Gutey go after!

I watched Nolan Smith and yes very impressive but I do not see him someone that could hold the edge. If the Packers go Edge I love guys like Tyree Wilson, Will Anderson, Lukas Van Ness, Will McDonald, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Keion White, or a Will McDonald. Any of these guys would look good in G&G. Because of the vast #'s of good Edge players available in this draft (barring 2 picks in round 1 because of a Rodgers trade) I'd lean towards picking up an Edge in round 2 allowing the Packers to go after Brian Branch, Quentin Johnston, Michael Mayer, Dalton Kincaid, Paris Johnson, Peter Skoronski type players with the #15.

Will add that depending on how the Packers might want to use Luke Musgrave this is a guy that might look REALLY GOOD on the Packers. His actual 40-yard time at the Combine will really help determine where he goes in the draft. They say he runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard. If he does he is going to rocket up the boards.

Quentin Johnston, WR - 6'4" and 215 lbs who runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard

Luke Musgrave, TE - 6'6" and 255 lbs who runs 4.4 (allegedly) in the 40-yard.

Musgrave is good, but I have questions about his blocking and his yards after catch ability. He didn't show much in the latter from what I watched of him at Oregon St. Then there's the injuries too.

If he can be more violent after the catch and improve as a blocker (the latter should come fairly easily as he gets more familiar with the pro game; he has the skill set to do so), I think he could be a really nice all-around TE.

Mayer, Kincaid, or Kraft would be my preference

Packy,
Why I said depending on how Musgrave is used! If he truly does run a 4.4 they might not even play him at TE, but at WR. Otherwise, they just play him as a move TE, and leave the blocking to a more traditional in-line TE like Big Dog, or a Darnell Washington type.

Short sighted! Very talented...smooth....and a good receiving 6'6" 255 lb TE who can split middle of field.

I LOVE Lukas Van Ness. I am not surprised he is blowing up the combine. He is a player I want the Packers to get and I think they will be attracted to him. He's got all the athleticism, like Rashan Gary did, his only known is inexperience, which can be viewed as a plus by some. He just feels like a future Packer, kind of like Watson did last year.

CM3 was more of a true LB, and LVN is more of a DL/edge hybrid. LVN has longer arms, 34 vs 32, but CM3 did better in the broad jump and the vertical. LVN actually had a slightly faster 40. They both did almost identically in the 3 cone (CM3 by 0.1 seconds), shuttle (CM3 by 0.14 seconds), 10 split (CM3 by 0.03 seconds), and 20 split (LVN by 0.05 seconds). LVN is heavier by 32 lbs, 272 to CM3's 240. Overall RAS of 9.7 for CM3 and 9.75 for LVN.

Contrary to your opinion, if there is one position I would take in the first round, it would be edge. Yes, this year's class is deep, but what that means is that the players at the top of the class are of a very high quality, more-so than in a mediocre edge class. We should take advantage of a deep edge class and try to land one of the most exceptional edge rushers near the top of the class early in the draft. I hope that's LVN.

It would be a no-brainer for me to take an edge at least in the first two rounds, likely in the first. If LVN is available, I have a feeling the Packers will try to get him.

Tyree Wilson will be gone by the end of the top 10. Nolan Smith actually excels in run D. His issue was pass rushing production.

Packy,
Thanks for obtaining Clay's info and comparing to Lukas. Just short of time as usual with work & other obligations.

Whenever I do my mocks with two first round picks I always take Lukas with one of them. Yes, I take him over Branch. I do think Douglas will be moved to Safety and they need a good CB over a Safety. The draft seems short of top Safety players. Quentin Johnston & Lukas are usually the two guys I draft in round 1 unless Tyree Wilson drops and is available. I like the one offensive pick to go with a top defensive pick.

Having said that.....after watching the Combine yesterday I would be completely comfortable taking Adetomiwa Adebawore, or Keion White instead of Lukas either later in round 1, or in round 2. These guys are Edge players but who can slide inside. These guys are big & can run. They can hold the edge & they can get after the QB just like Lukas, or Rashan Gary. There are several other Edge guys who are close to the talent of these guys as well. For example, I really like Will McDonald & Myles Murphy too!

The problem with the draft is we fall in love with certain players (my biggest draft crush is Quentin Johnston, or a Dalton Kincaid) as there usually are other players who are just as good. This is where with the first round pick I'd really like to see the Packers go after the BPA. For example, many say that Will Levis will eventually be the best QB in the draft. He doesn't fit a position of need right now but if he is there I'd have to think long and hard because talented franchise QB's are hard to find, and they can play 15 to 20 years. The Packers are not contenders in 2023 & likely won't be for a couple of years, subsequently I would not rule out a QB such as Will Levis. Should Devon Witherspoon or a Christian Gonzalez be available I'd think long & hard on it too (for at least 15-minutes). LOL! Give me a great cover CB and slide Rasul Douglas to Safety.

Packy, I'd be interested (or anyone else thoughts) on Andre Carter II the Edge from Army. Guy has a great build and potential but seemingly not a lot of great information on him. Maybe because of being at Army. How good of a sleeper might this guy be at Edge in round 2, or round 3?

There is some talk that Carter II might slip to day 3 after an underwhelming combine. Great chance to pounce on him there.

Adeboware, Anudike Uzomah of K-St, McDonald, or Morris of Michigan would all be on my radar for EDGEs in addition to LVN.

I have questions about how well Branch will fit in GB. I would tend to take LVN over him too.

Personally I think we should try out Douglas at S before we move him there. While this safety class overall is pretty meh, there are a couple of guys I like, such as Sydney Brown of Illinois and JL Skinner of Boise St.

Personally, I would take Joey Porter or Cam Smith over Gonzalez or Witherspoon. With the latter two, I have heard that there are some tackling and run defense concerns.

I would think the Packers know exactly what Rasul can do at Safety by now. He is good size, a little slower than ideal at CB, and has good anticipation. He seemingly would be a better Safety than CB for all those reasons. Now throw in the fact that Safety is rather weak this year and I'd be shocked if Rasul was not moved. If true, than Branch shouldn't be a strong consideration. The other Safeties mentioned seem like guys who are all 2nd day selections.

Being that Carter is in the Army I'm going to speculate that he has not had the time to go and train specifically for the Combine and the tests like many of the other players there. He also has a lot of filling out physically to do yet. I would not be disappointed at all should the Packers draft him in that 3 round.

Condensing our needs Edge is # one. They would be best to take two-three and one should be round one or two. 34 sacks from this defense doesn't cut it. Veach and Andy Reid understood their weaknesses and corrected them in last year's draft. And absolutely killed their draft, rivaling Ted's 2009-2010 drafts that propelled the SB team.

Why I'm hoping the Pack gets 2 first & two seconds for Rodgers. Would really open up opportunities to fill needs including Edge.

Gonzalez really showed his stuff @ the Combine, 41-1/2" vertical. I have him as the #1 CB with his solid frame, then Porter, Jr. Kelee Ringo is a very impressive guy, humble and intelligent.

Also, DJ Turner ran the fastest 40 at the Combine at 4.26.
