OLBs Clay Matthews and Nick Perry Return to Packers Practice

On Monday, an injury to rookie Andy Mulumba left the Packers with just two true outside linebackers for the remainder of the game against the Bears, no more backups. Only Mike Neal and Nate Palmer were healthy.

So the Packers received a dose of good news and good health on Wednesday as they began the first day of on-field preparations for the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. A pair of former first round draft choices practiced for the first time in weeks: Clay Matthews and Nick Perry.

Matthews practiced in a club cast, protecting his surgically-repaired thumb, as predicted he would. Matthews hasn't played since Week 5 against Detroit.

Perry, meanwhile, practiced for the first time since Oct. 25 after not practicing at all last week. He hasn't played since Week 6 at Baltimore when he reportedly broke a bone in his foot.

Guard T.J. Lang was not present at practice. He suffered a concussion on Monday. Presumably, Don Barclay took over his spot at right guard just as he did during the game.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was present at practice, mostly observing but actually worked on his footwork, according to Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Rodgers broke his collarbone in the Bears game and will miss an undetermined amount of time.

I like adversity, just about everyone is counting the Packers out just because Rodgers is out. Get these two guys back out there healthy and its game frickin on.

Time to prove this team can win some games without its best player.

I think that we will prove that we can be competitive. If our D can generate a few turnovers (yes, a few) we will probably win a couple of the next games as well. A solid pass rush will help with that a lot!

This last game is where we missed Mathews and Perry the most. IF they can play this week, hopefully they can provide the pass rush that has been lacking.

Also, with the way Perry was playing what side does he play on? I personally would probably put Perry against the LT and CM3 against the RT, on most plays. Perry seemed to benefit a lot moving to that side.
I would like to see them move each around so the offense can't key in on 1 player.

Clay comes from the middle/inside. Nick comes from the left and Mike comes from the right. Sounds good.

I wonder if they can play safety or corner because the crew we have certainly couldn't against da bears. It was beyond embarrasing watching these guys playing off the receiver then missing the tackle after said receiver easily caught the ball without any contention.

Its not Dom Capers, its Dom Capers trying to make things happen with a bunch of wannebe dbacks no one else drafted.

Having more pass rush options, outside as well as inside, will make the coverage unit's job easier. A lot of our coverage problems resulted from McCown having a lot of time to throw, and then looking like an all-star even when pressure was applied. As far as the poor tackling, well that's what you get when the guy you are trying to tackle is a foot taller and 50lbs heavier. Those Bears receivers are monsters.

With a club on his hand, Clay's greatest contribution will be the fact that Philly's defense now has to plan for him. He uses his hands a lot to get around would-be blockers so his effectivness will be limited. Having him on the field may allow for more favorable match-ups for the other pass rushers, and he will no doubt draw foles attention for a moment on every play.
