No More Two-A-Days? McCarthy Will Need To Adjust

Drew Rosenhaus says the new proposed collective bargaining agreement outlaws the traditional practice of holding two practices a day during training camp.

Interesting note from Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel this morning who was listening to a radio interview with agent Drew Rosenhaus.

From Kelly's Twitter account:

Drew Rosenhaus told Sports Xtra players got a good deal: no more 2-a-days

This will be a very interesting development if it stays in the new collective bargaining agreement, especially with camps so close to opening.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, who is not exactly known for his arduous training camps, most likely has been apprised of this development and has a schedule ready for every eventuality. He has, the last few years, held two-a-days at least twice a week (while giving players some Wednesdays off) in the early going of camp to get guys hitting and into football shape.

If Rosenhaus is correct, McCarthy and his NFL coaching brethren will need to find a new way to get guys in football-shape after a lengthy period away from football.

If they are cutting back on practice time or capping it prior to this season I think it's reasonable to speculate we will see an increase in players on injured reserve, injury reports and physically unable to perform lists.

I'm not advocating the equivalent of the bataan death march for training camp to be 'successful', but the lack of simulated game conditions and some physical contact is going to lead to mid-season injury records on almost every team.

Maybe that's why MM's teams seem to get decimated with injuries every other year.

I agree that they'll need to find other ways to replace the workout from that second practice, but doesn't the agreement allow for team walk-throughs in lieu of the afternoon practice? It's not a total end to 2-a-days, just a restructuring. This might actually help teams focus on putting their offensive and defensive schemes in place after such a long stay.

Right, they'll still be allowed to do "helmetless" work in the afternoon if they choose - but nothing can replicate hitting with pads and helmet on. There was a reason coaches like McCarthy and Belichick liked starting camp with a bunch of padded two a days. Gets guys ready for football. Now? Look for those first couple of preseason games to be even sloppier than usual.

I was a very good tackler- but after learning technique I hated tackling in practice. Hated it and thot it a waste of time. When the game was on tho...I loved it. I imagine most are the same.

I seem to recall that for the past couple of seasons M3 has had very very few 2 a days in full pads, seems to me most were study sessions and walk throughs in the morning and hitting in the afternoon or vic-versa. In fact last year M3 had 6 days of 2 a days spread through out the training camp cycle, I suspect he will adapt with out problem but this year will be tough withe the rules changing a week before camp

I hear the players will be getting complimentary manicures, pedicures and facials once a week during training camp, too. Well done, D Smith.
