No Claymaker, No Problem? Packers Stuck in a Quandary at Outside Linebacker

Age is inevitable. Body deterioration is inevitable. Slowing down in the latter stages of a career and not being able to move as swiftly or quickly as one used to — also inevitable.

Long gone are the days of Clay Matthews wreaking havoc on the edge of newly-appointed defensive coordinator Dom Capers' 3-4 scheme, an adjustment that was made after Capers' hiring in 2009. The transition was the first time the Packers ran a 3-4 defensive scheme since 1993 for then-coordinator Ray Rhodes.

Soon-to-be nine years later, Matthews is seen by the vast majority — of social media at least — as a liability. However, if any recent example can counter that, it would be the 2016 season.

Being a "liability" would mean to put one at a disadvantage, whereas in this case, the Packers would typically be at a crossroads with Matthews on the field. But last season, Matthews being on his instinctive edge spot elevated the play of fellow linebacker Nick Perry. When Matthews was on the field on the opposite edge of Perry, Perry recorded 8.5 sacks as opposed to just 2.5 without Matthews, including a measly one-half of a sack during a three-game stint mid-season that Matthews missed with a hamstring injury.

From his 2012 rookie season through 2015, Perry had 12.5 sacks, but in 2016, he nearly edged out that total in a single season alone. Whether or not his onslaught of production in his fifth season is enough to net him a new contract remains to be seen. As it stands at the moment after several outside linebacker deals were struck with teams yesterday, it's arguable that Perry may be the best edge-rusher on the market. Perry agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million last March.

Matthews, meanwhile, finished with a career-low in sacks with just five in the nine games he started, also the lowest start total of his career. Another abnormality; 2016 was the first time since 2013 that Matthews didn't lead every Packers linebacker in defensive snaps. Edging him out was Datone Jones — who just finished his first full experimental season standing on the edge, Jake Ryan, Julius Peppers, Joe Thomas and Perry.

The situation at outside linebacker is a grim one for the Packers, and one that may more than likely be addressed in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.

It's doubtful that Peppers returns to the Packers on a one-year deal at 37 years old and more likely that he finally hangs up the cleats after a 15-year career that saw him climb the all-time sack list into fifth place. Matthews is sporadic, Perry is ultimately ineffective without Matthews functioning at a high level which is a tall task in itself. Without those three, Jones (also awaiting a new deal) and second-year Kyler Fackrell headline the second tier. There isn't much to write home about.

Fortunately, the draft may do the writing for itself.

Many experts are projecting UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley to Green Bay, who would be converted to an edge-rusher in Capers' scheme. T.J. Watt, the younger brother to Texans All-Pro defensive end J.J., is also a heavily sought-after prospect. Being born and raised in Wisconsin, that would almost make too much sense.

Skeptics believe 29th overall where the Packers select would be a reach for Watt, and as seen in recent history, general manager Ted Thompson — draft and develop guru — strays completely from any mock that dares predict the next precious cargo that lands in Green Bay. One thing, however, is for certain:

With great pass rush, comes serviceable cornerback play.

All the Packers need is "serviceable" at the cornerback position. The hope is that third-year cornerbacks Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins are going to make the third-year leap that wide receiver Davante Adams made in his third season. If the hope holds true, depth of Ladarius Gunter and a possible — possible — free agent acquisition can hold the fort down more than well enough.

If a consistent pass rush is formed, it's simple football mechanics. The opposing quarterback will rush the throw, have less time to scan through his progressions and eventually provide the secondary with turnovers that seemed so foreign to the Packers during the first half of 2016.

It all starts with the pass rush.

Speed and strength are needed at outside linebacker for the Packers. As if it must be reiterated; Peppers is more than likely gone, Matthews isn't getting any younger (and he's sporadic, as aforementioned) and Perry hasn't shown he can function just as well without talent opposite him. Aiming for an edge-rusher in the first round of April's draft can prove as a major help for the Packers, who desperately need it in their pass rush.

I agree, almost completely. When a zone blitz is run, which is what their primary defense is, the qb just has to find the holes. Any above average qb can do that. Mariota. Andrew Luck. Matt Ryan twice. Matt Stafford twice. Matt Barkley did in the fourth quarter on our secondary. In partial to blame by our pass rush, no denying. But mostly due to the fact that we don't have the ability to run solid man coverage as much as it should be. Good man coverage will help your pass rush by forcing the qb to hold it longer providing opportunity for them. that defense didn't do anything correct to defend the pass and running man coverage properly with the addition of a veteran corner to establish an ability to run man coverage will immediately make a difference, more so than developing yet another pass rusher, hopefully. Not to mention that has proven somewhat futile thus far.

Our pass rush and CB play going into free agency looks like a division 2 NCAA team, and with Ingram being franchised, that means Perry will be the TOP FA edge rusher available. Which means we'll either overpay for him, or have no good OLB's going into next year. Not good.

Clay's time as a dominant player is done. I've long thought that his ascent was a product of steriods - and as soon as he got his big deal, he laid off of them. Perry is not a #1 OLB either. Fackrell is unproven. Elliot can't put it together. Peppers is toast.

Things do not look good folks. I've got a strong feeling we're going to be seeing a LOT of youth at OLB and CB next year too.

Haven't Jones and Perry proven that you're not going to get a top notch edge rusher at the end of the 1st round? They will have to trade up, way up, to get one.

Justin Houston was a 3rd round draft pick, but I get what you're saying. This year's prospects are really deep, so it does seem possible to get someone good at #29 - maybe.

QB and WR are the only two positions on this roster (at the moment) that aren't full of question marks. -- The "D" is so lacking talent that the Pack will need several 'good' drafts just to bring it to the 'average' level.

Hey, just thought of something!! -- Maybe the Pack could sign a few FAs to beef up a roster full of holes. --- Novel idea. --- Someone needs to tell TT. -- Maybe he's not aware of this possibility.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't know how we win without the Offense getting off to good starts and controlling a game. This D needs a major shot in the arm. Drafting only is not a smart way to go anymore.

I think corner needs to be drafted high almost as much as OLB. I don't think the pass rush will be good enough, even with the addition of a first rounder, to erase the problems at the corner position.

If you get (for OLB), one of Takkarist McKinley, Charles Harris, Tim Williams, Haason Reddick, T.J.Watt, in round one, then you have corners Cordrea Tankersly, Chidobe Awuzie, Fabian Moreau (my favourite), Rasul Douglas in round two. I'd call it a win/win if we got, say, McKinley and Moreau.

Even if you go the other way round, you could pick up someone like CB Conley in one, and hope one of DE(OLB) Carl Lawson or Ryan Anderson is there, in the second round.

When Perry was drafted he was considered a great prospect at DE. When Jones was drafted he was perrys replacement for the future. DEs at the OLB, just aren't giving you pass coverage. IN 2010 we didn't need elephants. If you take all the sacks that the packers can get. You still have a slow defense the rest of a game. Perry and Jones are just to slow for the big Money. Let's compare Mathew's size, and early years , to what Perry has become. Perry is not worth the money. If you want a 5 man front ,Fine. But TT is not going after the MATHEWS TYPE. And this is why this Defense ranks among the worst every year. IT must begin with TT taking the Mathews TYPE!!! TT needed Woodson so he could draft Mathews. He also got away with the 3 man front because Raji and Pickett were so good. This front is not a front to win super-bowls and can only choke down the stretch. TT must Gamble now. Mckinley or Williams is the right gamble.

Draft for BPA and use FA to fill needs. If you spend another season trying to draft to fill need, you end up gambling on all the 'unmeasurables, the measurables and dreamy-dreamies based on college play. Its a 40% chance a draftee makes it as an average caliber NFL starter. Maybe 15% chance you get an impact player in rounds 1-4. Maybe 30% chance you get an impact player in round 1. Looking at GB record, that is once per 3-4 years. Why rely on such crappy odds to fill a need?

Bring a FA vet at CB and ILB. Aim for BPA-position targets in top 4 rounds for Edge, Edge, WR and RB and TE. Yeah...go for 2 edge rushers. TT doubled down on the CB position last year. Why not?
