Mike McCarthy Speaks To Cheesehead TV, Most Likely By Mistake

Mike McCarthy Speaks To Cheesehead TV, Most Likely By Mistake

It only took ten years, but I finally got to meet Mike McCarthy today and talk a little football with him. I'm sure somebody in Packers PR will be fired as a result.

I didn't get much time with coach and I really didn't feel like asking him about things that have been covered ad nauseum already this offseason, so I stuck to a few things that I've wondered about over the years.

I also asked him about his take on the coverage of his team in the local press this past season. His answer was interesting, to say the least.

I have to apologize for the soft recording and the background noise. You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want, etc.

You can listen to our conversation here

My favorite part? Mike saying that it was nice to finally meet me at the end of the interview. Even if he didn't mean it, it made my day.

Enjoy.

I love the title of this article alone!

Thank you for this, finally someone other than Wilde who is not just asking token questions...

I also do have one question, not sure whether you can or want to answer. Having never met McCarthy, I always hear that he is a great guy, high character, and his human side being decent really comes through. I know you only met and talked to him briefly, but did you get that impression from talking to him?

Hard to say as he was still kind of "on" in regards to the fact that he knew this was still a "media member" he was speaking with. But I've heard the same.

Ok, no prob. Awesome job with the interview, I really appreciated it.

The title made me laugh, too. Which was sorely needed.

Interesting encounter with McCarthy. Listening to your interview made me wish you were a Packers beat writer.
Good job.

I totally think he WAS glad to meet you, Aaron.

This was one of the most interesting interviews since you chose to ignore that tired old topics. I wish Coach would have you interview him every week for a Tuesday's with Mike kind of show. I bet it would be more interesting than anything the old media types would come up with.

Thanks Kevin. You should check out the podcast coach does with Larry McCarren on the team's site. It's really good and Mike is relaxed and open on it.

I'll second this.

Well done Aaron.

Combine today:

Spriggs a good-looking prospect.

3rd down backs galore. We know Ted likes West Coast guys, so how about Ervin from SJ State and Lasco from Cal.

WKUPackFan's picture

If the Colts do not draft Spriggs Andrew Luck should refuse to play this season.

Lasco was a stud!

sonomaca - if you want something great from the Combine check out the sound from WKU QB Brandon Doughty. Go to espnlouisville.com, second hour of The Zone from 2\25. About halfway through the hour.

Doughty has a southern drawl to rival Brett's. He describes a question one team asked about what he do if he was driving a bus down a steep, icy hill in Alaska with the brakes out.

WKUPackFan's picture

what he *would* do.

sonomaca's picture

Packers don't need a QB at the moment, but I thought Doughty looked pretty good.

Very good!
I enjoyed the different perspective.

Fantastic Aaron, well done.

Today marks a historic day for Cheesehead TV. Next milestone will be Rodgers on Packer Transplants. Make it happen Aaron!

Man that is awesome. Best thing to come out of the combine so far. This needs to be incorporated into the closing of the show somehow.

Rumors have Pack interested in Conklin or Spriggs in round one. Outside chance Spriggs will be there. Unfortunately for the Packers, there is no TE worthy of a #1. Could look at Fuller, if he's still there. Not many worthy receivers this year.

Probably want to wait for defensive linemen, since the class is extremely deep. Packers don't really need starting defensive backs. Bottom line, offensive line makes most sense.

I've told you this on Twitter before, but hot damn do you come across great on radio, Nags. Great job!

Wow...just caught this Mem Day wkend 2019, thus much has transpired since. First, interesting he asked right off are we on? (tape rolling); second, so very glad you asked about play calling (which IMHO, wasn't really MM's forte although some may disagree). Every once and a while he'd call nifty plays for the situation, but on 3rds and 4ths, NOPE! "You've gotta pound the football"...humm. Yes, he may come off as a "nice guy" but i've always surmised he was very stubborn to his detriment.
