Mike McCarthy: Sean Richardson Would Be Our Special Teams MVP

McCarthy had high praise for the job of Sean Richardson and his contributions to special teams so far this season.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Wednesday, following his team's first practice of the week. Here are select comments from his press conference:

  • On facing a former colleague: Obviously the first time to play against Joe Philbin and his football team, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm very proud of Joe. … It's a tough game anytime you play in Miami, Tampa Bay. I'm looking forward to competing against Joe.
  • On Joe Philbin in Green Bay: Joe Philbin was a big part of our success. Great football coach and good family man.
  • More on Philbin: There's a personal side and a professional side to every encounter. We really haven't spent a lot of time reminiscing about Joe. We've spent a lot of time getting ready for the game.
  • On playing in Miami: I wore sunblock today, so I'm excited about that. It was 48 degrees and sunny.
  • On preparation for a hot environment: You always talk about hydration; you always education about education. I think with what we've done with our program, it's an every day thing for us. … We'll be ready. I feel confident about it.
  • On rookie defensive lineman Luther Robinson: Luther did an nice job. He's obviously competing to play this week. I think competition thoughout the week for your football team is always a good thing.
  • On Jarrett Boykin and his groin injury : Jarrett won't practice tomorrow, I do know that. Kevin Dorsey has earned this opportunity. … Personally, I'm excited for his opportunity.
  • On Datone Jones and his ankle injury: I put Datone Jones in a day-to-day category.
  • On Kevin Dorsey: Kevin Dorsey was probably one of our best special teams players in the preseason. Just to get the consistency of the wide receiver position is something he'll continue to work on. … I look forward to him contributing Sunday.
  • On the Dolphins defense: Miami's defense, very active. Their pass rush jumps off the film at you, very athletic defense. … It's definitely a heightened awareness for us.
  • On avoiding turnovers: Your number one objective on offense is to take care of the football. It starts with the quarterback. He handsles the football on every play, and he's done an excellent job of that.
  • On Aaron Rodgers avoiding turnovers: Anytime the ball's turned over, it's something that your football team has to overcome. I think that Aaron has done a great job and will continue to do so.
  • On commonalities of great quarterbacks: I think their understanding of the game. And I think there's physical talents they all have. Their anticipation and their eye discipline … the game really slows down for them.
  • On their development: It's all coaching (joking). I think these young guys coming into the NFL are further ahead in that category. These QBs are better prepared to make this jump. … We're definitely blessed to have two great ones back to back.
  • On his conversation with Joe Philbin about Aaron Rodgers at the Pro Bowl before Rodgers became a starter: I remember the conversation. I think Joe was calling the game for us in the Pro Bowl, and he wanted to run the ball because we had Adrian Peterson. That's what hpapens to you when you go to the Pro Bowl. ... I remember Marty Schottenheimer saying, 'Hey kid, pay attention to these guys because they're the best of the best.'
  • On the stress of the Packers defense being on the field too often: We've been on the field too much defensively, and you have look at everything that contributes to that. … Special teams continues with the field position. Defensively, we have to work to get off the field. … It's five games. It's something we're aware of and focused on.
  • On special teams: If I were to pick an MVP of our special teams today, it would be Sean Richardson. … I like what we're doing on speicial teams. Our speed is improved.
  • On Davante Adams: Davante has really grown. He's getting better and better each week. He's taking advantage of his opportunities, and he'll continue to do so.

I still wonder what would have happened in 2011/12 if Philbin's son hadn't tragically died a week before the playoff game against the Giants. Football is an extremely emotional sport. It was obvious that the Packers, especially the offense, came out extremely flat. So many uncharacteristic dropped passes, most likely due to a lack of concentration. Kuhn and a number of others have expressed this week how rough that week was on them. The Packer players truly loved Joe so that tragic event left them emotionally drained. The Packers got ripped in the press after the loss, and to their credit didn't make any excuses, but you have to wonder.

Yes, but other teams draw strength from events like this. One can give in and give up, or fight through it. As much as I dislike #4, I think we all remember how he and the whole team played right after his father passed away.
I really don't want to downplay the gravity of the situation, and every situation is different, but it is very simplistic and I think wrong to just blame that event. Especially considering the circumstances that night and criminal past of that young man.

Sarcasm follows.........
Our STs are getting better. Just last week when we received a punt our players hung around the bouncing ball and when it hit one of our players it went out of bounds. Most other teams would make sure their players got the h&$# out of the area. Not Slocums' team, they stopped the ball from advancing and made it go out of bounds before the opponents took possesion.......absolutely brilliant??????
