I thought he sounded more calm and collective. Yes, he was upset at what he described as lack of fire, etc....but "pissed" doesn't best described his demeanor.

Agree, but easier said than done. I trust Gute will figure this out. Is there a difference maker at LB @30 (probably not) or maybe we can make a move up. This position has been a sore spot far too long. I like Martinez, think he’s smart/good leader, but he’s just not fast enough.

This is a very light LB class though Simmons is a long shot and if Murray is gone its even more difficult to find that guy with the traits the Packers need as a day one starter. They're for sure going to have to address half of the position in FA (Joe Schobert cough cough) if they let Blake walk.

The Packers haven't had a true day 1 starter since Bulaga and Matthews and Raji before that. The first rd selections since have been huge reaches and have all proved to be just that or worse.
Odds are, even if a day 1 starter was sitting there for GB, they'd find a way to pass on him.

Jaire...Savage...hell if Randall hadn't been switched to corner he could have been a day one for someone else the Packers made two other guys switch from their natural positions so its hard to say who could have been a day 1 starter.

Let's not confuse 1st rd picks who command being the starter and those who start more from default of having nobody else or the position being so bad there was no choice. I'm not dismissing either you mentioned but neither commanded the position.

Commanding ability dictates taking a position, not handed to you for other reasons.

Gary being #12 overall, played what...3 snaps against SF,a game that needs to be won to play in the freaking SB. How can that be justified. How can they consider him a solid selection much less a 1st rd starter. The shoulder stuff cannot defend this fail especially since they now say no surgery needed. So what kept him back all season. He needs a monstrous, out of the gate play from the start next season. Anything less puts him in Nick Perry category. And please, don't give me the Perry was the 32nd pick bs, The vast majority of optimist here thought him another god as like Matthews. Who after 3-4 years fell like the other enhancer users in 13'.

Lastly, if your switching every player you draft to play another position, you have a problem.

No TT had a problem with his best player available bullcrap those guys especially Perry and Jones could have had better careers somewhere else if TT drafted for need instead bba. He had an insane obsession with PAC-12 guys and making them switch positions. And Perry wasn't the 32nd pick was? I thought he went mid 20s.

It's early in draft season. 2 weeks ago, Patrick Queen was in the 200s in many player rankings. He's shot up to top 50 after the title game and his declaration. Maybe he'll elbow his way into the conversation for #30 before all is said and done.

More names will emerge through out all levels of the draft. Akeem Davis-Gaither, Cameron Brown, Jordyn Brooks, Charlie Snowden, Justin Strnad and Troy Dye are guys that have had good things written about their athleticism. I'm sure there are more. They won't all turn into guys that are top 65 picks. But that's not really necessary.

SF got Greenlaw in the 5th last draft and Warner in the 3rd in the previous draft. So it can be done. Especially if they get the DL help they need to keep the ILB free to run to the ball carrier, as the defense is designed.

It matters not one damn bit if Gutekunst gets Pettine big bodies and line backers if the base package remains 2-3-6!
It will remain a recipe for getting gashed in the run game and gashed again in the air against good quarterbacks.
Not happy...

The problem with sticking with Pettine is he just isn’t effective. He had an enormous infusion of talent on his side of the ball and our defense could never really stop the run or an offense with a good quarterback. I don’t buy the argument that we need more talent because, at some point, coaching has to fill the gap because of the salary cap.
Before anyone brings up the Seattle game and their all star quarterback, they had no running game at that point in the season which weakened them tremendously.

If you are going to discount the points that poke holes in your argument, you'll certainly win every argument. At least in your own mind. I hope you're not too surprised if others see it differently.

Russell Wilson is as good at QB as anyone in the NFL these days. That's a fact. The Packers defense got the job done against him. That's another fact. So the Packers defense did, in fact, stop an offense with a good quarterback. We could go back and forth on Kirk Cousins being a good quarterback. But what is not much of a back and forth is that the defense dominated that offense in a performance that was quite impressive. Both late season wins vs playoff teams were in no small part thanks to Pettine's defense.

No argument about them sucking vs the run. They did all year. That must improve.

Well I'm not disappointed he's staying I'm just hoping for improvement and another year of additions on the def I looked up Pettine's def from 2013-2015 (his 2015 season sucked ass) his years without Rex and the Packers got exactly what they paid for he really doesn't seem too fazed by the gawdy numbers and focuses more on 3rd down conversions, redzone percentages, takeaways, QB completion percentage and pressures all areas the Packers improved in. Maybe we were hypnotized and thought he was bringing what Rex Ryan brings without the "rah rah" and foot fetishes. If he can give up less explosives next year and have this def settled somewhere in the top half of the league (12-10) in the gawdy numbers along with the things he's already improved on we'll be in good shape.

As I stated in my prior post.... Since I'm very impressed with MLF coaching abilities whatever decision he makes I'm fine with. He is the one who has to work with Pettine and knows best the strength and weaknesses of the team. There are only so many schemes a DC can do and if you don't have the horses sooner or later it gets exposed. I think he saw improvement in the D, but also feels there is a lack of talent in the middle of this defense and it showed in multiple games. Against a great team like SF that lack of talent was exposed. To get to the BIG game Gutey and staff will need to improve this.

What the hell does "Convincing" anyone have to do with anything?
Can he 'convince' the league to eliminate the salary cap so he can then 'convince' MLF and BG to sign 'his type D guys'?
Or,
Maybe he can use all that "influence" you speak of on Roger Goodell to get the 1st pick instead of the 30th in each round of the draft, or maybe even 2-3 picks in each round.
Sounds good, Great post!

It seems our defense was gashed by so many running backs and shredded by so many quarterbacks this season; and it seems there were a disconcerting lack of in-game adjustments; and, finally, the playoff loss to the 49ers game was a humiliating debacle for our defense.
Ultimately, though, I don't know if keeping Pettine is a good move or not -- and so I'm trying to give MLF the benefit of the doubt.
I'm still really shaken by our last game, and don't know what to think. That thumpin' was really somethin'!
To be so overmatched on both sides of the ball, and manhandled, is stunning, and not easy to recover from. I don't know how to make sense of it. If we keep the coaches, then does that mean the players are that bad?
What just happened last Sunday? Perhaps I need a little fan therapy.

I'd like the Packers' front office to find some more defensive expertise in the off-season to make sure they're drafting the right players; we're looking for "draft and contribute", not "draft and develop." Too many misses in the first three rounds over the last several years. I hope they realize they need to improve their talent evaluation.

Ok, I to was tired of Capers and his defense but he had a top 5 defense in 2010 and we won the Super Bowl so maybe he wasn’t a moron but didn’t change with the times or no longer had the horses. The things Pettine emphasized( pressure, turnovers, red zone, etc) worked very well for us overall. But to be strong in those aspects you have to give up something and that was quality big bodies to utilize when needed. If Gute upgrades the defensive line and inside linebacker positions, that will give Pettine the flexibility to go big with quality. Let’s give him one more year to see what he can do with one more year of upgrades.

If you read Bob McGinns breakdown of the game on The Athletic it really makes a compelling case that the defensive coaching staff needs to go.

I get LaFleur hoping that continuity will pay off, but I am dubious. Sadly, I've also lost some enthusiasm for the Smiths.

IDK, hopefully this is all motivation for them to understand how the level of competition rises exponentially the closer you get to a championship.

Couldn’t agree more. I think Pettine needs to go and for what we are paying the smiths the caved at the biggest moment and that needs to be addressed

The Smiths played very poorly for sure.

In the end I think those guys are class acts and it won't happen again.

JJ, it’s like politicians when they tell their side of the story it sounds so compelling but when you hear the other side it brings you back to reality.

Keeping everything the same, I'm sure the outcome will be different in the future.

4-3 Defense!!! Get another NT and 2 LBs
add 1 WR and 1 TE and a Backup OL and we are off to the Super Bowl

A NT is not used in a 4-3 defense and would definitely not need two more LBs in that setting. It’s a big change to switch back to a 4-3 and we would need even more of a defensive line upgrade

And what about that nonexistant running game. There isn't enough money to fill all these holes.

Team in the middle of a rebuild goes 14-3, get to the NFC champ game on the back of it's defensive unit and some you 'fans' want to axe the guy who just got this team there. Right...... Some folks are spending WAY too much time on the webs these days. (Says the guy who is spending.......:-)

Poor drafting and total ignorance in free agency by TT has put this team in a hole! They need better talent evaluation in the draft and for god sakes let Jimmy G walk that was a huge waste of money! G- man needs to get busy again this off season to get faster and meaner on both sides of the ball. SF just kicked our ass all over the field and we had no answer both times we played them! They need Rodgers to come back and be a leader next year with more weapons!

Go Pack Go!!!!!!!

Thanks

I agree with MLF, Pettine deserves a chance to fix the problem. Pettine will have to come up with a better system for filling gaps. And Gutey has to give him a couple of new ILB that are fast. Why not Gary? How can Burks be good on ST but not as ILB?

Pack can let draft come to them in R1. WR or OT would be nice but if top ones are gone, can easily switch gears to defense: ILB, DT, CB.

Go get TE Hooper in FA.

If we're so desperate at ILB, then why not just put Rashan Gary there? I mean seriously. He's never gonna play as long as the Smiths are healthy. And if Martinez is too expensive to keep, then let's leverage this freakish athleticism that we always hear about with Gary. Otherwise it's another wasted first round pick. It would plug a huge hole for Martinez, and then we focus our draft capital and free agent $$ on the D-line or at WR...or both.

RAT year begins January 25th, 2020 & ends February 11, 2021

The HORSE is the RAT's enemy sign...Mike Pettine is a HORSE

Don't hold your breath, high odds LaFleur messed up

It doesn't get easier for LaFleur (GOAT) in the year of the OX in 2021...GOAT & OX are enemy signs

Could be a revolving exit door, Pettine, then LaFleur
