Matt LaFleur establishes minority coaching fellowship, hires Ruvell Martin

Most Packers fans will undoubtedly remember Martin from his time in Green and Gold.

The Packers announced earlier this afternoon that head coach Matt LaFleur has established a minority coaching fellowship, a yearlong, full-time position for young and aspiring minority coaches.

LaFleur announced on Wednesday that former Packers wide receiver Ruvell Martin is the first hire for the fellowship.

Most Packers fans will undoubtedly remember Martin from his time in Green and Gold when he played with Aaron Rodgers, but he has actually caught passes from LaFleur as well. That's right, the two played together at Saginaw Valley State.

Martin will work with the offense and assist with the wide receivers during his yearlong fellowship.

He saw action in 82 regular-season games in the NFL with nine starts and registered 76 receptions for 1,129 yards (14.9 avg.) and seven touchdowns.

He originally was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State in 2004 by the San Diego Chargers.

In 2005, Martin was allocated to NFL Europe and helped the Amsterdam Admirals win the World Bowl after leading the league in receiving yards (679) and receiving TDs (12).

"Martin will work with the offense and assist with the wide receivers during his yearlong fellowship."

Should be a fairly easy job considering they have all veteran WRs and want to run the ball more.

Minority coaches can benefit from programs like this. I hope that even more players can take advantage of programs like this and that we see more quality minority coaches and GMs in the league.

Ruvell Martin was one of Rodgers' favorite targets from his early days running the scout team while Favre was still in charge.

It transferred to the field, too.. Ruvell was often on the field as one of the "Big Five" WR's on key downs, and while he didn't get a ton of snaps, the ones he was in on found him often targeted by Rodgers on key 3rd downs. If memory serves correct, that was Martin's statistical niche- he was a 3rd down conversion guy.

I believe Matt LaFleur and Ruvell Martin were teammates at Saginaw Valley State.

MLF was the quarterback at Saginaw Valley ( 2000 - 2002 ) and Martin was of course a WR for the team.

Like the idea of this new coaching fellowship and glad that Martin gets the first opportunity to coach in the program.

Who else went to Saginaw Valley State? Jeff Janis.

SVS, The Greenhouse of Greatness.

(If anyone knows someone in the marketing department there, send ‘em my name. If that’s not their motto, it should be...)

He was picked to early, they could have gotten him later and he doesn't fit well with the offense scheme. What is MLF thinking.

Martin played 5+ years in the NFL - which is an extraordinary accomplishment. Often it is the grinders who make the best coaches - as they are able to relate to more of the team as a whole - commensurate with work ethic. Very worthy first hire by LaFleur.

I’m a huge believer in mentor ship, internship, fellowship programs etc. I’ve seen these programs help many people make progress towards their futures. I don’t know what Martin’s plan are for the future but I wish him well in Green Bay and beyond. Thanks, Since ‘61
