Lions 31 Packers 0: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers ended the 2018 season in God awful fashion with a thumping 31-0 loss to the hapless Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Rodgers put up one last performance for the home crowd and it was. . . not great.  And then his day ended early in the second quarter when he was evaluated for a concussion.

The image above says it all: "Here, take this and go run this offense for me, OK?"

On to the final edition of "Game Balls" in 2018.

Game Balls

DeShone Kizer

Coming in to relieve Aaron Rodgers is never an easy task, even in a meaningless game.  Kizer manned up and tried to get the offense going, which is hardly a given this season.

His day wasn't great, but he showed he can run.  The interception was really bad.

I have to show some love to the back up quarterback in Green Bay.  It's been a lot of "clipboard holding" for the past 26 years.

Kizer's future with the team isn't known but at the very least, the team got some tape on him in this game.

Lame Calls

Special Teams

When Matt Prater throws a touchdown pass, this entire unit gets a lame call.  One more horrible look and example of why this area has cost this team time and time again this season.

On the play, the Lions flank a receiver out wide and not a single Packers player moved out to cover.  That's coaching, my friends and don't bring any cockamamie excuse as to why it's not.

If Ron Zook is back in Green Bay after this season, he's got more magic in him than Houdini, Copperfield and Favre combined.

Kentrell Brice

Brice should never have been counted on to play a lot of meaningful snaps but he still lands here for a season of futility.

Brice missed tackles on so many occasions and was a total zero in coverage.  If he's back next season for anything but special teams, I have to start questioning just how good the Packers want to be defensively.

The Packers should get an honorary lame call for how they handled the safety position this season.

Josh Jackson

Jackson covers, Jackson gets beat.  The fourth quarter touchdown put him on this list.  He's got a lot to learn and improve on from this season.

Whether he stays at cornerback or moves to safety, Jackson needs to regain his nose for the football.  Brutal day against the Lions.

2018

This year was just not the Packers' year.  From the tie against the Vikings to the debacle in Detroit to cutting two players and a 13-year head coach due to performance issues, this season has been abysmal.

We can only hope 2019 is better but after watching this season unfold with Rodgers under center each week, nothing seems a given, does it?

The offseason starts now and there's a lot of work to be done at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.

There's not a lot else that can be said about the Packers right now.  By the time you're reading this, there may already be members of the staff that have been let go or moved on.

Changes are coming and that's a very good thing.

Thanks for reading Game Balls for another season and we'll have more great content this offseason for you all!

Happy new year and Go Pack!

You must have started drinking early to give Kizer a game ball.

Regarding drinking early - I don't blame you one bit! This season needs to be washed down, away and forgotten.

Gute on hot seat now to take control. Murphy - just stay out of his way and go build another playground somewhere.

If Kizer had practiced to start, i’d be more critical. Overall he didn’t do worse than Rodgers, so need to consider that. Daft approach to the game by the team selection. Would have liked to blood Donnerson too.

I thought Jackson actually showed positively. He is a rookie, and is going to get fooled, it is the percentage of good coverage that one has to look for.

I thought again that the Browns (CB and DT) showed something to say keep me around on a day where few did.

Game Balls - To the fans who showed up and spent hard earned money to watch a bunch of over paid losers not show up to play a game which they are getting paid thousands and even millions of dollars to play.

Lame calls - The top offenders .....

Ron Zook - Not so Special teams

Offensive Line - very offensive

Defense - is there anyone with a pulse?
How many missed tackles?

JK Scott - wasted fifth round pick

Jimmy Graham - Gute you have some explaining to do, dude is washed up!

DeShone Kiser - he is Brett Hundly II , actually he is not that good. Traded a former first round pick for this guy?

Murphy-Gutekunst
- maybe Thompson-McCarthy weren’t so bad after all. As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for!

This team stinks!

That is all.....

On the Prater TD you can see the GB sideline in the background. Not all of it of course, but you do get a shot of it. Most of the players and staff aren't watching. Obviously it's on the guys on the field to pay attention and make plays, but where was the coaching staff on that play? Why didn't they call a timeout when it was obvious that they were about to get tricked.

Zook being let go should be the easiest decision of the offseason

(also, way too early to make any determination about gute)

I disagree completely. Daft to expect rookie skill position players to become (non emergency) starters. Overall, the class contributed more than should have been expected.

Next year will tell whether they will take the next step. At least the playing time some recurved should help their development curve.

Jackson-ummm I’ll be nice ugh
Moore-nothing
Burks-nothing
Scott-good and bad
Madison-no show
MVS/ESB- there were moments but
All 7th rd picks-nothing
I’m sorry and you have to wait three years to determine if a draft pick is a bust blah blah blah
But if you are an organization that pins everything on the draft this is not good period
I’m worried about Gute big time
Spend some money on real football players or we may end up watching our draft picks stand on the sidelines like cheerleaders

This game should take care of the notion Philbin will be our next HC. The Packers were lifeless which has been the case all too often the last couple of years. Scheme and talent are critical pieces to a football team, but so is emotion. We need a HC that brings scheme and an ability to get players fired up. I am tired of watching lifeless football.

I always thought it was a long, hard road for Philbin to earn the HC position. Even if he went 4-0 over his games, he would also have to have put the Packers at the top of most aggregate stats, saved the OL, got #12 playing like #12 again, and deposited an extra foot of snow on Murphy's sledding hill to really have a shot. It's hard to sell change when you promote from within, and at this point, the organization needs to sell change.

This game was a perfect summation of the failures of this team and organization.

Off-season - "Pay the man!!!" Guess what, the top 6 highest paid QBs missed the playoffs this year. Paying someone that much has too much of a negative effect on the talent level on the rest of the roster

Packers get eliminated from playoffs - "Play the man!!!" And Rodgers gets a concussion, which anyone who has a slight understanding of CTE knows that this could be a life changing event for 12.

I'm extremely happy that the final score was a goose egg, in a game played in Lambeau. Absolutely no reason why Philbin's name should have been thrown around as a possible head coaching candidate, dude would be a complete pushover and continuity of mediocre offensive strategy. Team needs a fresh approach and a new voice.

It might not be, too. Rodgers recovered from his last concussion in 2011 ok. Until there is a medical opinion from someone that has examined Rodgers that raises concerns, I'm going to hold off on believing the worst case scenario. NFL players get concussions. They are not all life changing injuries, even if some are.

But I do look forward to an entire off season of over the top predictions from armchair doctors that know nothing about how Rodgers is responding.

Ya, we know hank. Play everyone at all costs no matter what, no matter how stupid it is. Rah rah, the players, owners and everyone involved know it’s a business, half the teams rosters sat out and didn’t play this week, why? Because they’re wussies? No, because it’s the smart play with lots of people worth millions of dollars. We’d probably have the 5th pick in the draft right now if we play Kizer and Boylle for the jets. We now know we can dump Kizer after last game. What I consider momentum in the off season, drafting a stud that can sack the quarterback. You -warriors- quoting Lombardi will take us back to the 70’s, all about pride. I’m about winning.

Everyone understands the difference between 8 and 12, including every GM, HC and owner of each of the 32 professional football teams.

"Play everyone at all costs no matter what, no matter how stupid it is."

That is what most teams that were out of contention did over the course of the final two weeks. All kinds of teams fought hard to move down in the draft board with valuable long-term assets on the field, exposed to the risks associated with football.

Maybe the guys running all those teams don't see things as clearly as you. Or maybe they see things more clearly. Occam's Razor suggests it is the later. But it is possible you are just smarter than them.

They're playing because both players and coaches are given short term incentives that encourage them to play hard. Coaches are trying to save their jobs. Players might have contract incentives. What's good for individual players and coaches is not necessarily good for the organization as a whole.

If it’s just a concussion he’ll be fine but that’s not the point, I’m not going to be a doctor, but the point your missing is that it could of been much worse for no apparent reason in my opinion, if you believe differently, fine. That works.

I think the "concussion" and its timing were convenient for the Packers & Rodgers. First he's limping after the hit and then a few series later we're told it's a concussion.

Personally, I think one way or another the Packers decided Rodgers was going to have an injury that removed him from this game. It helps him save face by not letting the team down and allows them to sit others like Bakhtiari. And evaluation for a concussion also means Rodgers doesn't have to face the media after the game.

Regardless, it's over, time to move on.

Not a good year at all. State of this team now, in the performance on the field, and the level of play on the field for the whole season, painfully highlights what Thompson ,McCarthy and ultimately Murphy did to this team. Rode the coat-tails of a rising quarterback smugly hoping that they would once again win the lottery like they did with Rodgers. The false Kings of draft n develop. I'm more convinced than ever that Murphy's got to go as well.

Who TF is Robinson? Allen Robinson plays for the Bears. Do you mean Antonio Morrison? He's the only player that played well yesterday. He played the run well all year. Wilkerson only played 2 1/4 games and played the run well, our run defense suffered after his gruesome injury. Hard to call that a failure.

Mack wasn’t going to GB no matter what. Oakland said no to any overture from Gutekunst.
Wilkerson got injured. That cannot be pinned on Gute or an off-season failure.
Jimmy went to a MM offense that doesn’t know how to use the TE despite his (MM) claim of needing or wanting a TE that can split the middle.
It was a World Series of unfortunate events.
By season’s end, an entire DL on IR, two “starting” linebackers (Perry/Ryan), and how many in the secondary? Crazy.

Sorry Doug but I didn't mention anything about Allen Robinson in my post, so I am not sure what you are responding to and many of your posts seem to come out of left field.

Based on what I know about Robinson I would rather take my chances with either MVS or ESB than waste the cap space on Robinson. Thanks, Since '61

there should have been a total housecleaning of the coaching staff last year. now....instead of having a year of experience with a new coaching staff, they may be looking at learning new schemes on O and D.

...or they could have spun so far down into the shithole that they can't see the top.

I think, for the first time in awhile, we're seeing people here recognize that when you make changes, there's no guarantee that things will immediately get better. That was the opinion 4 years ago and mostly since: anyone could have made more of the situation than MM/TT did. Change is always leading you down an unknown path, and we can hope for the best, but it's a white-knuckle ride most of the time.

Heck, the CEO of ANY public company would do as much.

The carpet bagger is lame and a coward and this is not news to any packer fan who keeps up to date.

The amazing thing is that we have a 'culture' of winning where coaches are never held accountable. Zook should never have been hired, once hired at least 13 time per season he earned firing.

Enjoy your time at the top. You never know when it is going to end.

I actually agree with this guy. I do feel for him though as I think his Bears made a major tactical error by beating Minnesota. Now, they get Philly and if Foles is healthy, they're going one and done.

The Packers need a miracle hire at HC. I doubt very much Magic Mark is going to find the right guy. It'll be some guy that is nice and comfortable and fits right into the buddy club. It won't be about what's best for the football product on the field, but for them behind the scenes.

Give me a guy who is hard to work with that is a winner than a guy easy to work with who can't get it done. Guess which way THIS org is going to choose? They'll pick the nice comfort zone guy and sell the crap out of him that he was the "right fit" and also the BEST candidate. Half of that will be true.

Ok Ok Ok I get that Arod did not put this not very good team on his back and win the last five games in a row like he has done in the past by throwing 20 TDS and 0 Ints and get us into the playoffs.....but take the anger and emotion out of this....Rodgers is good real good....we are lucky to have him...in fact he is the only reason why we have a chance in the next three years....did he have a tough year? I say yes....I saw the missed passes the holding onto the ball too long the injury....but when it is all over who else would you want driving the ship? He has subpar talent all around him and there is no arguing that...The powers that be have ignored the offense for a few years now because of our terrible defense and that’s ok because Rodgers will keep the engine running even though the teams in our division have been gearing up to stop him for years look at minny and chic decisions with money and draft capital...I hope our front office realizes that the days of him doing this on his own are getting slimmer so let’s surround him with a real offensive line a real receiving core....Rodgers has screwed himself because of his ungodly play and now a lot of people are killing him for it... that’s not fair....this team has zero chance without him!

This 1000%. Cobb should have been gone, No replacement was drafted or acquired for Nelson. A legit WR should have been Drafted or a free agent. Jeffrey was out there, Robinson was out there and others. Good WRs were to be had in rounds 2-3 were there. Not getting a WR in the 2nd was a mistake. The only surprise was I was NOT expecting the TE position to be less than stellar. You protect the franchise....how the Oline was handled was pretty bad. They knew Chicago D was good even before Mack....I would have kept a FB . They have a shit ton of stuff to look at this offseason and I hope it gets fixed.

It is baffling why such little attention has been paid to the absolute lack of O line talent. Reminds of when TT let Wahle and Rivera walk then tried to replace with cream puffs -- much more pounding on Favre, and far more hurried, bad QB decisions.

Give #12 even an average NFL line and he will be #12 again.

The trouble is OG. All project 2nd round. You then have to take a OT as an option. And move him. Spriggs was a LT. and couldn't do it. Bulaga made the switch. Just not many on the board in the first & 2nd rounds that can replace Bulaga. Do we move Bahk and Taylor? I wouldn't.

Old School, you're quoting PFF, and referencing rank for rushing and passing offense in prior posts. Just curious, were you able to watch the games this season? Yes, at times "people were getting blocked", but our offense was consistently an inconsistent cluster f*ck. It was bad, as in ineffective, as in the viewer screaming in his head "don't these guys practice?" How does an O-line with a RG who plays like a Bop-It clown on ice skates rank as above average?

Yes I watch all the games and I record them and stour you what’s happening, just like I did for many years when I coached HS football here in Texas.

But I don’t watch every play of all32 teams. That why I think statistical rankings are a way to compare

RG is the least important position on offense, and it was the weakest part of our offense. But not the reason that our offense struggled. And overall, by any objective analysis, outline did a pretty decent job.

I listen to people here who are allegedly Packer fans say our President sucks, our past GM sucks, our past HC sucks our interim Hc sucks, our offensive line sucks, Williams sucks, Graham sucks, our pass rush sucks, Perry and Martinez and Fackrell suck...........

The blathering know it alls don't have a fraction of the acumen of the professionals who run this Very Well Run organization. So I throw some facts out thereto are what blowhards like you will say. You rarely disappoint me.

The Packers had some bad luck with injuies and the bounce of the ball. Ithappens. But the nonsensical finger pointing that people like you are doing .....I Find it very insulting to a team I've cheered for over a halfcentury. If YOU are what being sLacker can is about, then I guess I don't belong.

You don't go from the GOAT at 33 years old to the trash heap 2 years later. Sure Rodgers had a bad year in 2018. So what. The point that two of the best defenses in football are now in our division has something to do with that. As does an OL that is not what it was, as does a set of WRs that is mostly rookies, two undrafted free agents and one old guy well past his prime (Graham). We have one prime time WR (Adams) - and he had not a career year with Rodgers this year but an ALL-TIME GREAT YEAR. Throw in a medieval/primitive offensive scheme that relies on each offensive player playing a near-perfect game and it is easy to see why Rodgers was not Rodgers this year. Hire a new HC, install an innovative offensive scheme ala LARams, and restock the offensive talent around Rodgers and I would almost guarantee you that Rodgers would be Rodgers again. Fans who think running Rodgers out-of-town at this point in his career know nothing about football.

Saw the Wildcats game last night. Two different games. Utes dominated first half and WolfCats dominated the 2nd half to gain easy win. Fitzgerald announced at the awards ceremony that he wasn't going anywhere, he was a WildCat for life. So that puts an end to that speculation.

Looks like the Pats OC to me.

The Packers need more players who are self-motivated, who play with passion, who don't get hurt or nicked up ALL THE TIME like Kevin Queen.

Antonio Morrison needs to be back.
Nick Perry needs to be gone.

Would any team trade us anything for Kevin Queen?
I'll take a 6-pack of beer for his worthless $ stealing skinny punk.
Such a shame as 99% of us would have just drafted TJ Watt, but senile Ted had to show the World just how brilliant he was yet again, like his double play of Damarious Randall & Quinten Rollins who were both head-scratchers the moment they were selected.
