Light Breaks Down Packers' Fold-ISO Run

James Light looks at an incredibly effective wrinkle from late in the 2014 season.

James Light's blog is a treasure trove of football info, and his latest post on a specific wrinkle from Mike McCarthy last season is no different.

This is just an incredibly detailed breakdown of something McCarthy drew up late in the season after Rodgers' calf injury rendered him somewhat immobile.

Money quote:

Games like this are why I think Mike McCarthy is one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL. Despite Rodgers injury and facing the 2nd rated defense in the NFL, he was able to come up with a successful game plan that adapted to his team’s situation. The Fold-Iso out of the pistol was a good play for the Packers the entire game, both the traditional run and RPO.

Be sure to read the whole thing. It is, quite simply, excellent.

Even though I am the first to comment, I am pretty sure that we fans love articles like this. I didn't comment yesterday because I thought the article spoke so well for itself. Excellent article. Thanks.

I really feel that Rodgers injury actually opened up the playbook and creativity for McCarthy. Even though he was limited by what he could do he found other ways to be creative and actually had a positive affect.

The Pistol became a much needed change down the stretch and moving forward that could be a primary set. It provides a great run/pass option. Its unfortunate that it took Rodgers injury to add this to the offense, but in the long run it could make the offense much more potent.

Lacy is the type of RB that runs better when his first move is towards the line. It gives him momentum and allows him to time himself with the line. Also defenses will have to pay closer attention to Lacy in the pistol which will open things up downfield more for Rodgers and the WR's.
