Matt LaFleur said: "Yeah, absolutely. Of course" he wants Aaron Rodgers back as his quarterback next season. This after Rodgers said yesterday: “But there’s got be mutual desire on both sides.”

Tom Silverstein -
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said what you'd expect him to say when asked if he wants Aaron Rodgers back next season. "Of course." Problem is, it's probably not his decision. It will come down to GM Brian Gutekunst and president Mark Murphy deciding the best step forward.

Rob Demovsky -
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said Aaron Rodgers’ future is “an offseason kind of decision, but surely, yeah, we want all our guys back. We made a big commitment to him this offseason, so that was important.”

Rob Demovsky -
On Jordan Love, Gutekunst said he's seen enough already to make the offseason decision on his fifth-year option but it's always good to see him play more. But they're going to play every game this year to win even if they're eliminated from the playoffs.

Ryan Wood -
Brian Gutekunst says he's seen enough to have good evaluation on Jordan Love not only because of the sparing snaps he's taken past 2 seasons, but also practice reps. Asked him if he thinks Jordan Love can be a "starting-level quarterback," and Gutekunst doesn't hesitate: "I do."

Lot of Buts. Be an interesting off season. Again.

Gutey has actually been the best figure in a mis-managed organization. By no means the best GM ever, but he certainly hasn't been bad

Update: Gute and Lefluer both said they would like to have Rodger's back. Rodger's said he would like too.

Maybe LaFleur would , but after watching Gutey's press conference, I got the impression he really liked Jordan Love.

For Rodgers? I agree. MLF isn't the one who makes the decisions, and I recently heard that Rodgers' contract, while a big commitment, was intended to be on a year-to-year basis to reflect his up-in-the-air future (with retirement and whatnot). It could be a little more than that, though.

I also heard Rodgers say that if he returns, there has to be a mutual desire for him to come back. Love makes more sense; he is an ascending young QB who has yet to hit his prime, (Gutey said he looked very sharp in practices and when he got reps with the "ones") while Rodgers is aging and in the twilight of his career, and isn't getting any better (not with the Packers' supporting cast anyway. Not to mention, Love would be cheaper for the next 3-4 years, and they could get better draft capital for Rodgers than they could get for Love. If Love doesn't work out, then so what, because he would be on a cheap (ish) contract, and they can just draft another QB in 2024, which is expected to be a good class. If we were to keep Rodgers, on the other hand, and he doesn't work out, though, then the Packers are doomed for 2024 cap-wise and it would set back their rebuild by about 2 years and deny them of a potentially good QB in Love, putting them in QB purgatory.

Just because the Packers should play to win every game doesn't mean the Front Office alwys has to be in a win-now mode. The current problems with the Packers run deep; one offseason won't be enough to fix them and shape them into a contender. That is why we must enter a rebuild; so we can cleanse the organization, start on a clean slate, and build a true contender from there, so we can have a bright, winning future that hopefully involves a championship.

The way I see it is this: The Packers ought to sacrifice their slim odds of making the playoffs in 2023 (let alone winning a playoff game; further let alone winning a super bowl) so they can drastically improve their odds of winning a super bowl championship in the future, rather than trying to increase their miniscule hopes of making the playoffs in 2023 (likely just to be eliminated in the first round) and dig themselves into an even larger pit in the future. Such a path would establish them as bottom-feeders for years to come, and would involve much more losing than trying to win in 2023 would be worth.

If the Packers enter a rebuild and trade these players (Aaron Jones, Aaron Rodgers, Preston Smith, Elgton Jenkins [via the franchise tag], Rasul Douglas, and Preston Smith) for draft compensation, they will have over 120m of cap space in 2024, not to mention oodles of draft picks in 2023, a draft that is expected to produce a generational load of talented players. We then use the rookies from 2022 and 2023 to lay the foundation for the next era of Packers football. Then, we will have several talented players on cheap rookie contracts to play with.
On the other hand, entering 2023 in a win-now mode would not cleanse us of salary cap hell, but it would continue it, deprive the organization of good, young, cheap, talented players, and involve years of losing before we become relevant again.

I'm not a podcast guy at all. This is the only one I listen to regularly, because it's always good. My favorite part of this one is Andy's comment that the Packers are not a team that likes to eat their vegetables (i.e., do the basic, fundamental things that win football games). So true!

I think the team improves for the better if Barry goes.
