Lande Thinks Packers Could Take Boise State RB Doug Martin

The Sporting News draft analyst expects Green Bay to look at the Boise State running back.

The Packers haven't drafted a running back in the first round since 1990, but at least one NFL draft analyst thinks Green Bay could be in play for one in this month's draft.

Russ Lande, a former NFL personnel man and current draft writer at Sporting News, expects the Packers to look into drafting Boise State running back Doug Martin, who Lande ranks as his No. 21 overall prospect in the 2012 draft.

"Expect both the Green Bay Packers (No. 28 overall) and New York Giants (No. 32) to consider taking Martin in the first round," Lande wrote. "The Packers won a Super Bowl without an elite back, but they would like to get a strong and physical runner who can stay on the field for three downs."

The Packers have bigger needs than running back, but it's possible that GM Ted Thompson views Martin (5-9, 220 lbs.) as highly as Lande currently does. While Thompson wasn't in attendance for the Boise State pro day last month, the Packers did have a scout there.

Darrell Thompson, the 19th overall pick in the 1990 draft, was the last first-round running back selected by the Packers.

Makes sense. Draft a 'supposed elite' RB in round 1 when the "D" is crying for another playmaker. Of course, to get the most out of that 1st round RB, GB has to take the ball out of the hands of the NFL's best player & MVP from season 2011. That's always a great 'football strategy'. Limit AR's impact on the offense while AR is in the prime of his career.

RB in round 1? Not going to happen. (Rd. 7 comp pick is high enough)

Now that's a great idea... while we're at it why not just paint a huge target on Rodger's jersey. An every down running back would help the Packers close out a game, Grant has no gas in the tank and Starks is trash. Did you know Martin is one of the best pass blocking and pass catching backs in the draft too? Taking a RB like this would help keep Rodgers healthy and unright.

If this happened, I'd freak. The last time we 'needed' a playmaker or 2 this badly was the horrid J. Harrell pick.

We needed offense then, and that was TT's biggest screwup to date.

We need DL, OLB NOW!

For the love of Pete, TT DON'T DO IT!

It's just one guy's opinion. To be honest, I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in it. Good for discussion.
