Lacy Avoids Significant Injury

The Packers running back has a chance to play Monday night against the Chiefs.

This has to be considered good news, considering the early run-in with bad injuries in Green Bay.

From Tom Silverstein

The big question facing coach Mike McCarthy now that X-rays have shown no fracture and Lacy, according to McCarthy, is scheduled to test out the ankle on Thursday, is whether it's worth it to push him through a game and risk a longer-term injury.

Lacy suffered the injury in the Packers' 27-17 victory over Seattle on Sunday night when Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright landed with all his weight on Lacy's lower leg, causing his ankle to twist badly. Lacy received a new tape job on the sideline, but it was clear fairly quickly that he wasn't going to return.

A source close to Lacy said he did not have a fracture, but the area of concern is the ligaments around his ankle.

Because the Packers play on Monday, McCarthy is pushing back the practice week, which means Thursday — instead of Wednesday — will be the first. The padded practice will be on Friday and then Saturday will be a rest and rehab day.

The final practice will be on Sunday.

Thus, Lacy could conceivably rehab through Saturday and then test out his ankle in practice on Sunday.

We've seen this before with Lacy.

Packers fans remember 2013 when Lacy battled through an injury to the same ankle. I specifically remember being amazed at how effective he could be on a bum wheel.

That said, I hope McCarthy and the Packers err on the side of caution here.

It's a long season and there is little reason to risk reaggravating  the injury by throwing him out there on Monday night. Yes, a player can get injured on any play. But sending Lacy out there at less than 100% (or as close as can be assimilated once the football season starts) doesn't make much sense when James Starks is running as well as he is. Alonzo Harris would obviously be active for the first time as well. Throw in the Cobb-in-the-backfield package and there seem to be plenty of alternatives.

The last thing the Packers need is a hobbled Lacy dealing with an ankle injury for an extended period of time.

I agree. Sit him this week and give that ankle a good two weeks to heal. Get him ready for an away game in San Fran.

I'm just glad to not hear "high ankle" sprain.

I was originally going to say to let him play if he's healthy, but to monitor his touches and use Starks and Harris a lot. But screw that. Be smart and give him the week off.

That is exactly how I felt to. First I wanted him to play if he can, but I would rather him healthier for the majority of the season.

They have Starks and can spell him with Harris. Also they can still use Kuhn if needed and can use their new package (4 WR 1 TE) with Cobb and/or Montgomery in the backfield.

Ankle ligament injuries are extremely common and once you've had a bad sprain two of the three are usually torn and they don't regenerate. The surrounding tissue can scar in but it's never the same.
Not a huge risk of worse injury in terms of structural damage. Can cause more pain and swelling but unlikely to make anything significantly worse from a structural and long term aspect.
Time off will allow the pain and swelling to regress and allow him to function potentially at a higher level however as Aaron said, he's done very well on a bum wheel in the past.

In regards to KJ Wright, is there anything that guy did that wasn't bad? Attempted ripping RRodgers' head off, slapping the ball out of RRodgers's hands 7 yards deep in the end zone, Lacys ankle... Not impressed with him as a human being. Hopefully he gets at least weed possession worth of a suspension.

Let him rest. Starks and Harris with some Montgomery

Lots of Montgomery. He like Tate, fast and elusive so why is he on the bench. That's the problem with MM. Run Lacy Lacy Lacy. Then if hurt, run Starks Starks Starks. Why not alternate guys to keep them fresh and wear down the defense. Why sit a Montgery so an Adams can catch some passes. They are both good use them MM.
Is Quarles even on the team anymore. What a waste. And Rogers need to shed some fat from his ass because he is slow of foot.

Assuming Lacy can go at about 80/90%, I might use him as a decoy for play action. Like Seattle, KC can bring a lot of pressure but play action with Lacy can help slow down their push a bit. He doesn't have to carry the ball or be out there for every down but in appropriate downs and distances KC would have no choice but to respect the fake to him. Otherwise, rest him unless he is 100% Thanks, Since '61

Based on what I saw vs. Denver, KC doesn't have the offensive firepower to compete with even a Packers-less Lacy. I think Starks/Harris will do enough to get the job done.

Neither did the Bills and you remember how that played out.

I like the idea of sitting Lacy as well, but thinking KC can't hang because they don't have a prolific offense would be foolish.

Any news on Adams? He seemed to be banged up and missing action for much of the 2nd half.

If anyone knows ankle injuries its me. I can look at a pot hole in a magazine and injure my ankles. Yes either one.
If he twisted it he could very well be good to go on Monday. If the sprained a ligament, ya don't plan on seeing him for a couple of weeks.
He did not tear a ligament or they would have said so.
Ironically I would rather break the ankle than do a ligament, its heals twice as fast and is not as painful.

My ankles hurt just thinking of this.
