John Kuhn Won't Sign Extension Before Free Agency

When free agency starts on Tuesday, John Kuhn will be one of the NFL players looking for a team to sign him.

Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, a source says that the Packers will not offer Kuhn a contract before the new league year.

Kuhn is one of 17 players on the Packers' roster from last season due to become an unrestricted free agent. The 31-year-old was last a free agent following the 2010 season. After the NFL lockout of 2011, he re-signed with the Packers for $7 million over three years, including a $750,000 signing bonus.

Kuhn has made a name for himself in short yardage situations and in pass protection.

"I have to say he's probably the best pass protector, third-down back in the league as far as protection," Alex Van Pelt, who coached Packers running backs last season, said shortly after the season. "At certain points, you have a comfort level with John that's huge. That would be a hole we'd have to fill."

Eddie Lacy's pass protection was better than I expected. He doesn't have Kuhn's experience yet but he can fill that role if Kuhn doesn't come back.

But I'd rather Kuhn be brought back on a one year. I'd also like them to look for his eventual replacement.

Never thought TT would go to clear the decks rebuilding mode this season. I'm pretty disgusted so far.

Ha. Disgusted so far? Nothing's even happened yet.

Do you walk out of movies if you don't like the previews?

Not offering Kuhn is hardly clearing the decks.

I guess he won't sign one if there isn't one there to sign.

Well if khun isn't back I think the perfect fit would be Hewitt from Stanford.

You can't blame JK for trying to get one last payday. He's 31 and why not test the market and get what you can. Its a young mans game today, they play hard for a lot less money.

4thand1, I don't blame him for seeing what he can get. I don't see GB paying him. He's a Good FB, & he made a Great Block, but if you can't get a FB that can block, he doesn't belong in the NFL. If you want to talk about Players coming back at Vets Minimum or a little more, I'd say JK would be one of them. I think he got $7 Mill the last time. I don't see that happening. JMO

He got $7.6 mil over 3 years. I have no doubt he'll be back. Probably something like $2.5 mil over 2 years.

Kuhn doesn't have many options because a lot of teams don't have pure fullbacks on the roster. Maybe the packers will go that way too if they can have the RBs take on the roll. They won't be as good as kuhn but it is an extra roster spot. I would hate to see the fullback gone. Remember william henderson catching a pass from the sideline and hurdling a linebacker? Those are sweet memories.

I remember an aging Harry Sydney coming with Homegrown that first year and catching passes and running hard. I thought...this is the first real running back the Packers had since 1973.

With Lacy and a new commitment to running the ball, I'd love to see the Packers get a true wrecking ball fullback.

I think Kuhn still has value to the team and will be back. Not sure if there is room for two.

Hell, they carried 3 fullbacks before (seriously, what the hell was Ted thinking?), why not 2 this season.

William Henderson, that was a Good Fullback. Another Packer I hated to see go.

Agreed, one if the more underrated players of his time IMHO, and a good guy to boot.

I have this feeling that if I'm right, Kuhn, Raji and others are NOT going to get any real interest and may come back begging for a deal.
The question then does Teddy take them back on the cheap? Or realize hey maybe can do better in the draft and free agency (I don't see this) if need be.
How much can you pay a guy to block. How much can you pay a guy to fill a gap, no pass rushing skills and very few tackles to his name. How much can you pay a guy to go over the middle and not catch a ball. These are not quality skilled players were talking about here.
