Jace Sternberger placed on injured reserve

The rookie tight end is eligible to return later in the season.

The Packers announced that they have placed rookie tight end Jace Sternberger on injured reserve.

Taking his place on the 53 man roster is wide receiver Allen Lazard, who will be called up from the practice squad.

The play he got hurt on looked pretty bad for his leg/knee/ankle
Not surprised....he’s young he’ll bounce back
Feel bad for him though

What’s up with Savage now keeping 26
WTF?

Costs too much to change numbers and it sucks for whoever bought a Savage 26 jersey.

Ol Sternberger is not off to a great start is he, a concussion then a trip to IR with a busted up knee/ankle. Get well soon man they're probably gonna need ya.

Definitely needs to bulk up a little, hes a bit wirey.

Getting blindsided after a play? I think it’s a little excessive to start doubting his physique based on that plus an ankle.

Would have liked to see him play more, but hopefully later in season. Months of weight training will serve him better in the long run. For all his skills doesn't have an NFL ready body just yet. Playing him from the start would have put him at risk with more injuries and set him back even more.

And we keep Lazard!

Was hoping to see a few burgers hit the end zone. Perhaps it’s all up to Big Bob now! Hope this kid gets back healthy soon, and he and Tonyan can be great together.

I wasn’t very impressed with what I had seen in the preseason. There were a few flashes of what could be. And yes, the play he got hurt on made me say out loud that his leg didn’t look right. I could tell something serious had happened. He tried to play it off with the coaches, but they took him out. His body seems fragile for the NFL. I’m hoping next year with conditioning and training and working out he’ll be able to be in a better place starting the year.

He was really starting to show up in practices right before he got taken out after a joint practice play.

That said, I didn’t expect him to see the field a lot early anyway.

Well SH**

I really liked this kid coming out and hope he gets and STAYS healthy quickly. They say TE is one of the most difficult positions to learn in the NFL. With Jimmy Graham as your starter, you want the guy you spent a day 2 pick on to eventually take his place on the roster and not on IR.

And so the injuries start...UGH!

He will have time to learn as well as build up his body not a bad move for now may pay dividends down the road .

Hopefully... I still would have liked to see the kid get his feet wet THIS year. Now we need to wait a year after he only played one season at a D-1 school. Maybe it's not a big deal but IMO he would have been so much better off when next season rolled around with a year on playing time under his belt. There's no substitute for playing experience.

Agree NP,but he may come back. Depending of course on how he recovers, but if he does come back towards the end of the season he will play. Unlike with MM where he would just get buried except for a play or two.

The key here is that Lazard in now on the roster. As I've said before, Alison will be here next year if he has a big year( same can be said for Kumerow). The Packers can't afford paying him(them) when they have a lot of others to pay first.

This moves protects the Packers over the long run.

Wouldn't be so sure Allison will be here next year. Need to look at overall salary cap and the performance of guys like MVS, Davis, Lazard, Kumerow, and Shepherd. A big picture overview.

Having said that I think Allison is one of the most overlooked players on the roster. Great guy and interview. Hope he has a fantastic season!

It's a shame because I don't see us paying the $7M I believe we'll owe to Jimmy Graham next year. I also am not sure if Marcedes Lewis will be back in 2020 either. What I'm getting at is that Sternberger is going to be relied on a lot in 2020.

Sternberger will now be relegated to film study. I just hope we get more out of him than we ever did with former 3rd rounder Richard Rodgers, who obviously was a very different -- and less athletic -- prospect.

I wasn't expecting much from Sternberger this year anyway, but still, all the game days and practices lost will essentially mean that 2020 will be his true rookie year.

Sternberger and Lazard are the same height. I don't know if that means anything, but perhaps Lazard can run similar routes as a tight end.
Although shorter than Graham, Lazard may be better in the red zone because of greater agility and leaping ability.
If Lazard isn't the best at route running and separation, it may not matter as much in our new offense; and Lazard's athleticism may help him to make the catch.
In my couple of glimpses of Lazard this preseason, he looked surprisingly quick. Am excited to see him in a real game.
Also wondering if Shepherd is going to be ready for tomorrow due to injury; so perhaps Lazard gets a couple of targets or more.
A new season with so much new and hopeful going on for the Packers -- I'm excited!

Lazard would likely run Tonyan move routes if he ran any TE routes, but I don’t believe that is the motivation for his elevation. He was perhaps the best non returner ST player on the former 90 not named Crawford, and does a lot of what Crawford did as well. That is why he was elevated.

Ironically, he is likely to be active, as is Davis as a returner. That would make it quite likely (Shepherd is injured anyway) that Kumerow is inactive on Thursday unless they activate 6 receivers.

Davis is also a top gunner on punt units. If you want to make sure you stick around, make yourself indispensible...

That's interesting, CW. Will Kumerow or Lazard be inactive? It is hard to envision 6 WRs active. I remember Kumerow getting work on STs but Lazard got the plaudits. I would bet Lazard is inactive.

Even if Lazard doesn't line up as a tight end, or run the exact same routes as a tight end, he may be able to effectively do the same thing as a tight end in beating linebackers in coverage for first downs or standing tall in the end zone.
The same for Vitale out of the fullback position, who while not as tall as Lazard, seems to have the muscle and agility and hands to outmaneuver defenders for the ball.
Anyway, appreciate the responses.
We'll see what MLF has been hiding up his sleeve to confound the big, bad Bears.

That was my initial reaction as well. Like that they didn't add a TE ,and being a player who brings a similar dimension, yet more proven, and someone we wanted to keep as well.

Sternberger would probably been a healthy inactive for the first half of the season anyway. I doubt that the Pack would have 4 TE on game day 46 man roster. Injuries will ultimately determine who gets reactivated from IR. Unless there is a rash of injuries to the TE position, he is probably done for the season. The Pack does have a healthy TE on the PS.

I honestly don’t see Lazard playing a role other than ST’s unit and the last WR. The promotion protects him from being plucked, and, he’s deserving w Sheppard also out.

What I am curious about is who will fill his PS slot for 6-8 weeks? I still can’t find a thing on Markus Jones after that fine game 4 preseason performance. It’s like he disappeared.
