Illuminating Those Murky Free Agency Waters...

Every, and I mean every, single Packers fan in the world should read this article from Packer Report's Bill Huber. Bill does a great job of using Adam Caplan as a resource and giving fans, both casual and die-hard, a good overview of what the realities of the coming offseason are all about when it comes to free agency. Along with the great writing, there's the debut of Scout.com's Free Agency tracker for 2010 - an indispensable resource for anyone who follows football during the 'offseason'.

Just superlative work all around from both Bill and Adam.

I think many of us have been saying throughout this year in particular that the lack of a CBA will make this a very difficult year to be active in free-agency. I don't see much movement at all this year.

Thanks for the post, Aaron.

Most people seem to think that the lack of a salary cap mean teams will go on a spending spree, and they might- but it is a very real possibility that teams will use the lack of a cap to go on the cheap. There's no ceiling, but there is also no basement.
.
How does this relate to Free Agency? Well, while it is very true that a very small school of unrestricted FA's could result in increased competition for their services... Don't forget for a second that the NFL owners bargaining power in a talks with the Players' Union will be substantially weakened if teams go on unprecedented spending sprees in the FA market, IMO.
.
Remember the reports that some NFL franchise owners were unhappy that the Green Bay Packers year end financial reports were public, because it showed them making a tidy profit even after a "down" season? It will be hard for the NFL Owners Association to claim the players are taking too big a slice of the profit pie if teams readily over-spend on FA's this offseason. I foresee the owners having a under-the-table agreement in place to limit spending. As I've stated before, however: All it takes is one rogue figure (perhaps a Jerry Jones/Al Davis/Dan Snyder type) to make the walls come crumbling down and start a out-of-control, free-for-all bidding war.
.
Any thoughts?

I think this means that if the Packers want to bring back Ryan Pickett, they better do it soon! His price is going to go up, and go up fast!

That whole section on the left tackles depresses me, unless a serious effort is given to the O-line, we for sure go 6-10 again.

Good info. However, it gets annoying that I have yet another site that requires a paid membership for me to get the lowdown on my favorite team. First jsonline, now this... come on! My wife didn't like that I pay $45 a year for PI on jsonline. She won't go for this one.... damn!

Bearmeat - I'm going to address this in a post, but come. on. You realize the guys who provide the content to those sites get PAID, right? Bob McGinn, Greg Bedard, Adam Caplan, etc. They don't work for free. I have no problem paying for quality content. And don't even get me started on 'the wife won't like it'... ;)

All though I would love to have Josh Cribbs or Leon Washington on this team I realize the chance of getting them are slim to none. We really need to start looking at all the 3rd tier free agents out there that can help this team because I thinks that is all the Packers really can afford. Also, Ted Thompson hit the motherload in last years draft. I expect him to go the same route yet again.

Bearmeat,

You see where this is going don't you? You're gonna log on to CHTV in the near future, say, on a Tuesday. All geared up for the latest podcast, then, WHAM! Up pops the Paypal option for your subscription to the site, and for an extra $60 a year you will be on Naglers "INSIDER" E-mail list.

That “Final Eight Plan” is kind of a cool deal.

Fitz- ROTF LOL! Sad, but probably true. And as for Nagler - I really, really appreciate your hard work and excellent blogging. But seriously! It's hard enough just to have to PAY big bucks every year to Directv so I can even watch the Packers.

I understand that professionals deserve to get paid - I just don't understand why advertising on the site couldn't do the trick better (considering many more people would then peruse the contents, and thus be exposed to the advertising)

I was thinking roughly the same thing that Dilligaff was. This sucks for the o-line.

Meat,

The way the Saints offense looked today vs. the way our D looked last week... maybe it's better we just bowed out last week!

I am no fan of JSOline Packer coverage including the free side. Their chat is nothing but a bunch of foul mouth idiots who know little or nothing about football. As I'm sure Aaron and Corey know, Internet Ad revenue is far from being the answer. All ad revenue in the media is in the tank. The Sports side of the Journal is one their few money generators and they have to take advantage of it.

That said, this years' FA market will be difficult. I heard MM on WTMJ AM on Thursday morning. He was in a deep funk. He said he would not watch this weekends' games because he had enough football for a while. He explained the TT, coaches and him were working on the "Business Evaluation" of the team. He stressed that this was the most important thing he was doing right now. That says to me that the team is anticipating a difficult time gettin the quality they need on the field with the money they have available. Let's not forget GB doesn't have a "sugar daddy" owner to cover their financial shortfalls. They can never spend more than they bring in for any extended period. TT's draft skills will be put to the test this year.

Wow...making "excuses" for TT's ineptitude and inability to navigate the free agent waters already?

Wow..just wow..

And that Favre guy just had an awsome game today and is playing in the NFCCG next week, and then the SB!

Guess Tee Tee was right about that one too, eh? haha

Pack - I linked to an article that I liked. If you can't bother to read the posts, I'll simply block you from the site. I don't mind honest critiques, or even some of your regular bullshit. But don't start making stuff up. Oh - and why did Wolf retire? Because of the cap and FA - he hated it and said it was too hard to deal with anymore. Thompson's been one of the best in the league at working it. But your obvious bias makes it too hard for you to see that.

You're damn right he was. We've got one of the bright YOUNG up-and-comers running this offense, and he'll be doing it for years to come, D-BAG!

I've been efforting to get some info on the Vikes being in the final 8, and how Favre's usual drama will effect them being able to pursue FA. They have to "lose" somebody, so does "retirement" count as a loss, because thats like $11 mil they can spend to sign players. Or if they give him a "release" and then sign him back up

That sounds bad, paying for Pack stuff. That's why I let google host my blog for me. Just for the record, I'll still be free when Mr. Nagler starts charging ;)
