I Must Be Sitting In the Wrong Section...

Milton Moskowitz over at Mother Jones has a piece up about putting 'soul' (whatever that means) into the buisness world, and he leads with the Packers as an example of a business with 'soul'. I found something curious within:
The result is a community -- and team -- spirit unmatched in any other National Football League city. That's why Packer players who score touchdowns leap into the stands to embrace spectators. That's why fans at Lambeau Field sing "Amazing Grace" during time-outs. That's why, as Bruce Adams of the San Francisco Examiner wrote last year, "a group of nuns 75 miles away in Fond du Lac prays for the Packers on Sunday morning and then settles down in front of a television set to watch the game."
I'm familiar with everything but the bolded part. Is this true? I can't recall ever hearing a rousing rendition of "Amazing Grace" during a time out at Lambeau Field. Perhaps there's a "Rock & Roll (Part 2) - The Amazing Grace Remix" that I am unaware of...?

I think he's confusing “Amazing Grace” with "Roll Out The Barrell". Common mistake.

Speaking of ill-founded praise, in ESPN's write-up of why Lambeau was the number one game-day experience they were citing G-force. To be honest, that whole marketing campaign still kinda annoys me (they mean well though). Maybe ESPN is running out of justifications-- Lambeau has won it like 5 times.

That is one hilariously ill-informed reporter. AMAZING GRACE??? I've heard racial epithets, strangely personal insults directed at the likes of Donald Igwebuike, slurred speech, Yooper accents, long odes to the genius of Port Plaza Mall and similar such chatter in the stands at Lambeau, but I've yet to hear "Amazing Grace." Perhaps things have changed since the last time I was there (2003).

G FORCE IS CRAP.
Amazing Grace has never been sung during a timeout at ANY game I have attended. That's about 2 a year for the last 23 years.

Packer fans do a lot of things. Amazing Grace is not one of them.

Do any of y'all remember the Reggie White highlight video they used to play where he would sing "Amazing Grace"? The crowd would sing along. We're talking '97-'99 or so... I think that's what this writer is referring to.

How do fans get the Packers PR geniuses to ditch their contrived, lame, embarrassing
G-Force campaign? Especially after ESPN's misguided, ill-informed endorsement of it?

I don't get to many games in person, but I've never heard Amazing Grace played at Lambeau. I still get choked up when I hear it played on the bagpipes, though, such as at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
All that aside, I do think that there is a sense of community (call it soul, if you prefer) related to the Packers, not just in Green Bay and Wisconsin, but all over. Sort of a sense of ownership, not in the legal sense of possessing title, but rather a sense of shared responsibility. Similar to what we have here at work, where I am considered to "own" a number of projects, and am responsible for their timely and successful completion.
