Gut Reactions: Week 16

Gut Reactions: Week 16

  • Man, that felt good.
  • Aaron Rodgers' throw to Randall Cobb while rolling out for a touchdown was just inhuman.
  • EDS sure seems to make a difference in the running game. Of course, it's hard to make any kind of determination against what was an absolutely terrible Titans team that clearly wanted nothing to do with playing this game.
  • I know people love to hate on Finley - but he was great today.
  • As was Mike Neal, another guy fans love to abuse.
  • Happy to see Ryan Grant making multiple Lambeau Leaps.
  • Don't count on Woodson taking back his job as the blitzing slot corner. That is Hayward's job now - and he ain't giving it back.
  • Speaking of corners, Shields showed some ability blitzing off the edge as well. Nice little wrinkle to use later on.
  • Of course, when Dom faces a more experienced quarterback, he'll just rush four and play vanilla coverage. (sigh)
  • Randall Cobb better not be seriously injured. Or I'll start throwing things...
  • Did anyone notice that AJ Hawk had a really good game today?
  • Glad to see Moses get the start over Walden. Think he's the better player at this point.
  • Hey look! Graham Harrell successfully executed a handoff - and it went for a touchdown!
  • I love this football team.
  • I'm pretty sure every Packers receiver was going back to the huddle and telling Rodgers "Hey, I can beat my guy."
  • Gotta cheer for the Seahawks tonight.
  • Regardless of that outcome, going to be a tough game in Minnesota next week.
  • Did I already say I love this team? I love this team.

Hell. Yea.

Chris's picture

ZeroTolerance's picture

With Williams, Shields, Haywood, and House, Woodson will not see corner again. Neal is a player. Hawk was really impressive.

Evan's picture

Just imagine what the score would have been if the Packers were good enough to blow a team out.

cow42's picture

didn't realize how bad the Titans were.

my bad.

Cole's picture

Solid excuse

murphy's picture

Cow-ard excuse.

MadMan's picture

I'm so glad we gave a thumping when it was obvious we were the better team. many times in the past the MO was to back off and end up looking like fools. Need to keep putting the foot on the throat and pushing it.

Mel's picture

Yes u love to see killer shot with playoff football two weeks away!! No one and done this yr my friends!!

cow42's picture

let's not get ahead of ourselves here...

(all potential first game opponents) are more than capable of beating this Packers team.

no titan-like teams in the playoffs, my friends.

Evan's picture

And the Packers are more than capable of beating each and every one of them too.

cow42's picture

Sans the 49'ers and Giants.

Evan's picture

I'm officially going back to ignoring you now.

cow42's picture

you must just watch the Packers.

and even if you do... you must have missed the absolute beat-downs both of those teams handed the Pack.

there are 3 teams in the NFL that the Packers have zero chance of beating.

just so happens that 2 of them reside in the NFC.

packeraaron's picture

<em>you must just watch the Packers</em>

From the man who said the Giants are clearly Super Bowl contenders.

Idiot Fan's picture

I agree that the Niners and Giants are bad matchups for us, but to say we have ZERO chance of beating them is a bit melodramatic.

Pack fan from ATL's picture

Too bad the Giants aren't making the playoffs unless the Ravens seriously screw up in the next 21 minutes of game time.

TheCowboysSuck's picture

Garbage-The only team that gives the packers fits is New York and they will be watching the playoffs from their homes in California. Nub your cowboys are the poorest excuse of a franchise, sell them to L.A. already.

MarkinMadison's picture

Um... after last week, after your epic fail of a prediction, you still put the Bears on the list? Seriously? Look Steak, the Bears are not making the playoffs. The Giants may very well miss the playoffs. The Vikings may very well miss the playoffs. And why is the #1 seed in the NFC not on your list, but a Bears team that is beaten, broken and dejected on the list? You might just be the one person on this site who knows less about football than I do.

ZeroTolerance's picture

Steak - I love it. But would not 65% hamburger be better?

Rich Beckman's picture

Although I pretty much agree with what you say here, I would point out that the #1 NFC seed is not on his list because his list is of potential first round Packer opponents.

The Packers will not be playing the number one seed.

cow42's picture

keep counting out the Giants.

that'll come back to bite you in the ass.

seems to me they did just fine last year with a 9-6 record.

fact is - Packers do not match up with that team.

Beep's picture

Good day when the biggest dissapointment is the defense cost me an extra 5 points in fantasy after blowing the shutout.

Evan's picture

Blowing the shut out got me irrationally upset. Color me spoiled.

ZeroTolerance's picture

Looked like they were playing for no injuries that last D series.

Evan's picture

Seemed to be just miscommunication. First Shields let his guy go on the big completion and then on the TD no one was covering the WR at the top of the screen and Shields was stuck in no man's land between the two.

TheCowboysSuck's picture

Yea they were letting them score so no one had to make a tackle-I.E. get hurt. Why do you think the safety was 15 yards deep in the endzone..

Evan's picture

I don't know if I agree with that - seeing as Burnett (I think) came streaking across the field to lay a big hit on the WR before he had a chance to score.

But, really, it doesn't matter.

Steven's picture

Fun fact. Mike neal has five sacks. Cow, are you sure your a packer fam? You always pick the packers to loose. But when the destroy a team you just simple say the other tean wad bad.

cow42's picture

the other team WAS bad.

toolkien's picture

There is no way nimrod is a packer fan. He's quite obviously a troll. Most likely Berkshirebull from the ESPN boards. At least it's the same attempt to get under peoples' skin. Best just to ignore him for the troll he is.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Idk, I think nimrod is a Packer fan. A terribly misguided one.

zeke's picture

Exactly. Don't feed the trolls.

Ruppert's picture

As I write this, there were 18 comments, 5 of which were in some way minimizing the performance of the Packers by the one nimrod whose name I shall not mention simply out of lack of respect.

At least wait until Tuesday before you pollute this fantastic blog.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

He shall be known as "Nimrod" from this moment on. It has been decided.

Wiscokid's picture

packsmack25's picture

The only way to eliminate a troll is to ignore it. I never mention or respond to the trolls, and if others would do the same, this place would go back to being tolerable again.

Fitz, Packsmack25, lebowski, Evan: Merry Christmas, boys!

And the rest of you regulars, too: WiscoKid from my home town fer sure, Jayme, Colleen, Aaron, Corey, CSS, PackersRS, ZeroTolerance, MarkinMadison, Idiot Fan, and Oppy from Waukesha with the good water! And of course, everybody else I'm forgetting after a few homebrews this afternoon...

Merry Christmas to all of you.

Intelligent comments by TRUE Packers fans is what makes the premier Packers fan blog.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Yep, same to you and everyone else!

CSS's picture

Back at you. My father and I are headed to the Packers/Viking game next week, my gift to him!

Idiot Fan's picture

Aw, shucks Ruppert. Merry Christmas to you too.

lebowski's picture

all I want for Christmas is the number two seed. :)
Hope the New Year brings us all plenty to cheer about on the boob tube, and little to worry about in real life

PackersRS's picture

Appreciate the wishes, Ruppert. Definitely reciprocal. Merry Christmas to everybody in here, you guys are awesome!

And to the less awesome guys, Merry Christmas to you too. We all cheer for the Packers to win, right?

packsmack25's picture

Right back at you Ruppert, and all of yas. Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays. You guys are the reason I keep coming back to this place. The writers are pretty good, but the community is what makes this place the best.

Wiscokid's picture

Ruppert, best wishes to you and all of the folks back home.

Merry Christmas to all of the CHTV staff and regulars.

I hope all have a happy and prosperous new year.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Great win, we destroyed a team we should've destroyed, that's all I can ask for.

Cobb cannot miss playoff time, just can't.

Evan's picture

He needs to get off special teams asap. He's way too valuable to the offense. Flashbacks to covering my eyes whenever Tramon would field a punt in 2010 (I think).

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Ross looked to have some skills in the punt return game. Perhaps he's the guy for the job?

Ruppert's picture

Agreed. I dub thee "Ross the Returner" from here until February. Get better Randall. Soon.

cow42's picture

do not pull cobb now.
that would be asinine.

best players on the field from here on out.

don't want some dud with limited touches trying to field punts in the playoffs.

that's stupid.

hayward4president's picture

My oh my AJ HAWK. Zip it cow.....9ers lose tonight by the way.

Evan's picture

One more thing: DeJuan's TD was a thing of beauty. Patience...patience...then exploded through the hole.

Pack fan from ATL's picture

Yea, not gonna lie, that was probably my favorite play of the game (Wait... Not counting A-Rod's TD to Cobb)

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Nimrod, are we putting any American currency on the game tonight? Or do you have no conviction in the trash you spew? 9ers by 14+, if I recall.

Jamie's picture

What a game!!!

And if anyone needed any more proof that cowpile is absolutely not a Packer fan, absolutely a low-life troll, and absolutely a waste of oxygen.......

Ruppert's picture

Cowpile? You mean "nimrod." Not capitalized.

And having lived in the twin cities for 5 years, I am convinced he's actually a whacked out Queens fan who legitimizes his pathetic existence by constantly pointing out the Pack's weaknesses as a "Pack Fan." It's the Minnesoata passive-aggressive way, you know.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Ah yes, not capitalized. Good call Ruppert... A minimalist approach is definitely the right call.

jack in jersey city's picture

what happened to cobb? i was half hanging out with my sisters' kids and half watching the game. i'm guessing something happened in the 4th quarter

Evan's picture

Got his ankle caught under a tackler. Didn't appear too serious - he jogged off under his own power, with a slight limp. I'm sure it was mostly precautionary to keep him out of the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see him sit next week just to be safe.

jack in jersey city's picture

thanks evan. thankfully it doesn't sound too serious

Tommyboy's picture

Man, was that a fun game. There's no doubt Tennessee didn't show up to play, but the Packers didn't play down to their level. Fun win.

I SINCERELY hope Cobb isn't hurt. That dude just astounds me. How in the hell did he fall to the end of the second round?!

Steven's picture

No idea, how did hayward fall to second? Guys just think of the amazing problem next year. With all the old starters back and the backups playinf like starters who do u start. Thats depth IMO. Neal has looked good so far 5 sacks. And who the heck wanted to fire capers. Our offense is back+ our ascending defense= scary good superbowl run. P.s. i donr think cow understands that every team is beatable by every other team, matters just who comes to play

Mojo's picture

There are three players the Packers can't lose - 12,18 &amp; 52. Think we may have dodged a bullet with 18, although if Seattle wins tonight, we'll need him next week, in what would be a big game. Doubt if they'll play him next week, which will make it harder. Still think they'll win though.

Evan's picture

I'm honestly torn on whether I want them to get the #2 or #3 seed. The bye would be good for their health, but, man, recent history has shown that bye week to be a killer.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

C'mon dude... We need the 2 if we can get it. 33.3% less chance to lose in the playoffs.

I don't think the bye hurts, I think it's when you're resting starters week 16 or 17... Coupled with a bye that you have cohesion issues.

Evan's picture

I know, I know...and they'd also have home field in the divisional round.

But, from last year's Giants to the 2010 Packers, the '08 Cardinals, '07 Giants etc...the whole "getting hot at the right time and keeping the momentum rolling" thing seems to be working out well.

But come what may. I like this team's chances no matter the path they have to take.

Oppy's picture

Don't forget the biggest derailment for the 2011 Packers..

It wasn't the bye, or resting the starters. IMO. It was the Packers did not cope well with the turmoil surrounding the loss of Joe Philbin's son.

It absolutely hit that team like a freight train, and it clearly affected them in a way they were not equipped to bounce back from.

The Packers might be tighter knit than most other teams in some respects, and unfortunately, that loss I believe was harder on them due to that family like atmosphere.

JerseyPackFan's picture

Totally agree Oppy.

PackersRS's picture

Completely agree. They weren't ready mentally. Maybe having a bye and cruising to 15-1 influenced it, but Michael Philbin's death had a lot to do with it.

lebowski's picture

So we beat this team by 48 without our last three number one draft picks, our top two running backs, Charles Woodson, Jordy Nelson, Desmond Bishop, CJ Wilson, Jerel Worthy... man, I can't wait until this team gets healthy.

JohnLusis's picture

Love how this team has been playing the last couple weeks. Got some heart and toughness.

California Cheesehead's picture

I said this more than once: "Do my eyes deceive me? Is that A.J. HAWK in the backfield???"

hayward4president's picture

Jordy is my favorite wr....and I have almost forgotten about him as of late. I dunno if that's a good or bad thing...

Oppy's picture

Aaron, I just posted elsewhere, and I'll repeat it here:

Packers are going to absolutely humble the Vikings next week.

It's not often I'm this reckless, but the Packers are going to bitch slap the living grace out of those purple schmucks.

MM is in macho/statement mode right now. He doesn't want wins, he wants to put the league on notice.

The Packers are ready to rip up the playoffs.

JohnLusis's picture

Kinda got that feeling today when they came out throwing up 30. Cant wait for this team to get all its weapons back.

Rocky70's picture

@ Oppy

You should probably relax abit. The Titans are a bad team. The Vikes are much better &amp; the game is at their place.

"macho/statement mode???" --- MM is too smart to get caught up in all that 'testosterone bs" that fans enjoy. The only thing that matters now is showing up as healthy as possible in game 1 -- playoffs.

murphy's picture

"The only thing that matters now is showing up as healthy as possible in game 1 — playoffs."

Yes, neither clinching the #2 seed nor hurting the Vikings' playoff chances matter one little bit.

"MM is too smart to get caught up in all that ‘testosterone bs” that fans enjoy"

Clearly. This is why he kept Rodgers on the field calling passes so late in a clear blowout.

Walty's picture

It IS in Minnesota, but this offense has historically been a thing of beauty in the Metrodome.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

I agree. I posted last week that we needed to boat-race the titans and queens, we're half way there. I'm just not afraid of anything the queens have, AD is going to get his yards, don't care... He won't beat us. I see a convincing double digit win next week... We just need to come out of it as healthy as when we went in.

JerseyPackFan's picture

I think I may put the green spotlight on my Packers flag outside my house for all the Giants fans to see. Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Hey nimrod, it's 21-0 seachickens early in the 2nd... Maybe you should get out of the prediction business... You're bad at it.

Evan's picture

He makes Skip Bayless look like....well, nevermind.

PackerFan4Life's picture

oh how the times have changed...who would have thought that when the 49ers beat the Packers out of the gate at home to open the season they would potentially have a shot at gaining the #2 seed from them...oh irony how I love you, no but seriously the way this team played today completely demoralizing the Titans yeah I know its the Titans and they suck but to put up 55 on a team like its nothing is pretty impressive if you ask me. This team could be primed to make a deep run in the playoffs cause it seems the giants might be out of a wildcard birth if bears win next week and Seattle too, Aaron said it best man I Love This Team

cow42's picture

i love how after the Giants bent the Packers over everyone and their mother was telling me that this is a "week by week" league.

now after the Packers crush a horsesh*t team everyone's got this team heading straight to the Bowl.

"But come what may. I like this team’s chances no matter the path they have to take."

"No one and done this yr my friends!!"

" This team could be primed to make a deep run in the playoffs "

how 'bout just winning next week.
little early to send this team to any damn Super Bowl.

we'll see how that garbage line holds up against a team that actually has VARSITY players on it.

"from here until February."

" Our offense is back+ our ascending defense= scary good superbowl run. "

"The Packers are ready to rip up the playoffs."

CSS's picture

I agree, there's no way this is a week-by-week league, as is evidenced by how San Fran is killing Seattle, the Giants whipped a bad Ravens team, New England killed Jacksonville, the Super Texans whipped a one-dimensional Vikings team and the always dependable Steelers destroyed the playoff hopes of the worthless Bengals.

Clearly, this is not a week to week league. nimrod.....

cow42's picture

so this win against a garbage team really doesn't mean jack.

they still don't match up well against teams that have a solid pass rush.

pressure with 4 = Packers loss.

CSS's picture

WOOSH.....that went right over your head, huh?

The league is about matchups and personnel. Teams evolve or they disolve. Which have the Packers done through adversity?

Also, link to the comments here where everybody suddenly says the Packers are Super Bowl bound? You still don't know what a strawman argument is after all these years, do you?

cow42's picture

i 100% grasp your post.

it's about match ups.

the packers do not match up with the Giants or 49'ers.
it also looks like they might not match up with the Seahawks the way that team is playing right now.

"Also, link to the comments here where everybody suddenly says the Packers are Super Bowl bound?"

did you not see all of the quotes i gathered from this thread? each one of them was inferring that today's game was a sign that the Packers are going to make a "deep run" in the playoffs.

Point Packer's picture

This is going to be the last time I acknowledge your existence, but before I take the plunge I want to make sure and highlight just a couple of your recent "predictions". A short greatest hits of sort:

"49ers by 14+"

"qb won’t matter. - 49?ers can win without throwing more than 12 passes."

"take a look at the Packers’ offensive line for this weekend. and then go ahead and tell me that the Titans have little chance."

CSS's picture

Hard to not respond. Like an argument between a hammer and a nail, all the hammer does is pound the nail, yet there the nail is....

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

cow42's picture

i exist whether you acknowledge me or not.

by the way - the Packers' line is still awful.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

Change your name to "nimrod", then, nobody will question your existence. You have fought hard and earned that moniker. Cow42 is no more, nimrod is your future.. embrace it nimrod.

Oppy's picture

Why don't they "match up" with the 49ers? They -narrowly- lost to San Fran this year..

For the record, my comment about the Packers being ready to rip up the playoffs was, in context, the message I believe Mike McCarthy is trying to put out there to the league AND his players.

I think we all know the Titans are not a good team. What I took away from the Packers win was this:

It was a dominant, step-on-the-oppenent's-neck win, the type this team has never really been known for, especially against inferior competition. MM was showing that he's ready to put his foot on the gas, and the players were showing focus and commitment to a singular goal for 60 minutes.

Titans defense is not a bad D. We still flexed the run game and EDS showed promise at center and we saw immediate return on the line up change in the ground game.

Casey Hayward can do just about everything that Charles Woodson can do from the slot- and He's a rookie. Dom now knows he can use Casey in run support and pass rush from the slot with confidence.

Mason got a much needed confidence boost.

All three phases were firing on all cylinders.

I could go on. Ultimately, I am happy with the win because of what the PACKERS did, not who the OPPONENT was. For me, the biggest thing is Mike McCarthy had his team ready to not only play, but dominate, the opponent for 60 minutes, and play calling (particularly in the run game) was varied and sound all day. We're getting healthy, the run game is clicking, the defense has been steadily growing all season. There's not a team in the NFC I think the Packers don't at least have a fair shot against, and McCarthy has this team entering the final week of the season with an undeniable swagger.

I'm feeling good about what the Packers are going to do to Minnesota. This team is in a play-off mind state.

cow42's picture

"Why don’t they “match up” with the 49ers? They -narrowly- lost to San Fran this year.."

BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT THE TITANS! the 49'ers dominated that game from start to finish... there was no "narrowly" about it.

SF is just too strong in the trenches. their ol is far superior to the Packers' dl. their dl is far superior to the Packers' ol.... that's all there is to it. it's that simple.

Steven's picture

Lol dang cow, good call on 49ers by 14 they must be the best in the league. Haha please cow predict the packers dont win another game so we can have a superbowl run

Pack dont matchup well against 9ers? They only beat us once in the last how many years? This team has balance. Which is making teams play the run and opening up the passing game. If Pack had beat Titans the way they beat Jags u would be saying OMG PACK SUCK! Barely beat a terrible team again.
