Gut Reactions: Packers take care of the Washington Football Team

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers workman like win over the WFT.

  • Hell of a job by Joe Barry and crew.
  • Sorry, I was told Rahsan Gary doesn't make impact plays? Please respond.
  • Heinicke did a nice job with his legs when he avoided the rush and caught the Packers in man a few times. Doubt they expected that.
  • People are saying Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers hate running the football.
  • It's me. I'm people.
  • Why the Packers re-signed Aaron Jones so they could ignore him is beyond me.
  • Davante Adams isn't human. That sideline catch was insane.
  • Rough day for Lucas Patrick.
  • So great to see Eric Stokes rebound from giving up that early touchdown and breaking up that 4th down pass.
  • Now that Crosby has actually had a kick blocked, maybe they'll look at the protection unit.
  • I still can't believe Jaylon Smith didn't get to the QB on that first touchdown.
  • Happy National Tight End Day, Robert Tonyan.
  • Thought Whitney Mercilus looked good. Hopefully we see more of him going forward.
  • Need a few more ups and a few less downs from Darnell Savage.
  • Have a day Allen Lazard.
  • Go Pack Go.

Call me crazy, but the Packers look like a good team that doesn’t have half of their best players on the field due to injury. Not sure where I got that wild idea from, but I feel pretty strongly about it.

Unless the Packers get their studs back, they can’t dominate bad teams, and they’ll probably lose against the best teams. That patchwork O-line came down to earth today, esp in the first half. Arizona is going to be an tough game, especially on a short week.

Tip of the cap to Marcedes Lewis.

Runyon was also bull rushed backwards quite a bit in game blowing up any chance of a running game, however several other OL had same thing happening.

Packers will get a rude awakening if they play like this on Thursday.... Cardinals have a much better defense and their QB can run the ball also. If they can't handle Heinicke good luck next week against Kyle Murray. This game will be a good test for the Packers, I still say Gute needs to continue to contact teams for additional help on DEFENSE. The O-line did not play particularly well today. And Washington's defense ranks last... Packers next few games will tell where the Packers really rank in the NFL. Buc's, Bills, Cardinals, Rams and Cowboys all playing better football right now.

Rick, the WFT D front is legit. Those are four first round draft picks; two from Alabama, one from Ohio State and one from Mississippi State. The defense might rank last, their front does not and we saw that today.

A little luck and a little pluck, perhaps.
I don't know about the ratio in this game, but it's a good matter for discussion.
An aggressive defense will cause opposing offenses to make mistakes, although as humans sometimes we just make a mess of things without any help.
Maybe things evened out some for the Packers defense in this game, after giving up so many touchdowns in prior games.

Hey now, the Packers D can't help the fact the WFT totally blew that play when he gave himself up BEFORE crossing the goal line.

On 4th down though the Packers Defense DEFINITLY stopped them. They smacked him, knocked the ball out, and kept him out.

This team will lose a minimum of five more games. Cant run the ball. D cant rely on luck going forward. No killer instinct. Dillon fumble sucks. Still like wasting timeouts will catch up with them. Simply unimpressed by a team that is somehow 6-1. I could go on but upcoming games will show the major flaws of this team.

Funny I am totally the opposite. A team missing its top 2 edge rushers and top 2 corners holds a team to 10 points, 4 sacks, forces 4 fumbles and 1 pick.

The O line needs to shore up some but they are still playing down 2 starters. Bakhtiari is practicing andonce he returns Jenkins will once again be inside to help in there where the problems have been. By December, Myers also returns. This game they sure couldn't run but it's been going well there up to this game. With jenkins and Myers inside I think a big difference will be seen.

Before the season I thought the Pack would be like 10 - 6 but now thinking they will outperform that.

Once again a long play where the defender was right there but missed the ball.

But otherwise what game for the D! What redzone difficulties?

What was that blocked field goal? If the dude hadn't put his hand out it would have hit him in the face it was so low.

Am I wrong or on 4th down isn't it illegal to advance a fumble? So no matter what, that play was dead when he fumbled it and the stretch by Heinicke didn't even matter.

Couldn't run the ball at ALL and had those O line breakdowns in the middle again, but still found a way. This team is starting to have that finding a way stuff! Awesome.

I think that the only person who can advance a fourth-down fumble is the player who fumbled it, which in this case was Heinicke, so yes, advancing it would've been legal if he hadn't already been stopped and down as soon as he recovered it.

The biggest issue this defense has had is getting stops in scoring position and they did that four times today.

If this team can just start getting healthy there's no reason why they can't become the team to beat in the conference.

Long way to go to get there and a very tough part of the schedule coming up but 6-1 is a pretty incredible accomplishment for a team that's this banged up.

The only complaint I have is listening to Greg Olsen when I thought I'd give a listen to announcers again. He made me go back to muting games. It took all of two minutes.

The teams that were expected to be in the Packers' way this season, appear to be falling apart, Arizona and Tampa Bay only ones left. Let's see what Ari has next week against this Packer team that is very invigorated and confident. Finally.

I will agree that Olsen was better than last time, but that's not a very high bar to set.

I nearly spit out a chicken wing when he remarked that something was "in VAGUE" as opposed to "en VOGUE".

I do submit that at least he's commenting on the plays as they are unfolding, as opposed to Romo who can't help be try to predict every down.

Praise from Taryn is something that cannot be underestimated - well done Taryn!

I personally thought that if Heineke hadn't butchered that TD then this game takes on a completely different trajectory (not saying that the Packers lose, but the blowtorch definitely gets applied).

The D is starting to build the first green-shoots of an identity of one that turns up in the 4th. The O needs to take a leaf from this book.

Rodgers looked sharper today than he has in previous weeks. Maybe they thought that they should play more pass because the front of the WFT is the strength of their defense and the interior of our O-line is leaning on JRJ and Patrick? Either way, we need to get Bakh and Myers back as soon as they're healthy.

Like most people I was suspect of the Barry hire, but early returns have honestly been really good. Campbell is a revelation at ILB, what a signing. Loved the PBU by Stokes on 4th down, giving up the touchdown not so much, but he's almost always in good position.

Given all that we've had to overcome already this year from an injury perspective, I think this team has done an amazing job overall. We're 6-1!!!

I don't get it.

WFT's D line looked and played very well. Their O line for the most part played pretty good. The QB played very well. GB's QB played OK, had no running game and the D gave up ton's of yards between the 20's. The time of possession was in WFT's favor.

How did GB win? 4 red zone stops poor and simple.

A very disjointedly called offensive game. If something worked, like going to Lazard, we seemed to drop it completely and try something else, rather than forcing the opponent to stop it. We never seriously tried to establish the run to control their rush at least, and seldom used formations where that was a threat. Just felt that was a very odd offensive strategy.

An encouraging one for the D, but can someone explain that it’s ok to rush more than 4 once in a while and also the notion of spying the QB in man?

Maybe we get a long run or two. But Dillon fumbled twice and the running game did not even look good for more than one or two yards when they did run. It would be dumb to keep running it when it wasn’t working. Our defensive secondary is young and banged up. I am just happy that they did as well as they did. When you use a spy that means one less defender to cover the pass.

Runners typically need to run it to get going. Take time to soften the line. That said, one also runs to keep the rushers honest. We never got to that.

As a general rule, keep the other side of the ball guessing.
If there's continually no real threat of the run from our offense (e.g. no one behind the quarterback), that seems a gift to the defense.
If there's continually no real threat of a blitz from our defense, that seems a gift to the offense. For that matter, it wouldn't be good to blitz all the time.
Predictability tends to be bad.
Outsmarting the other team is fun.
P.S. Even Wisconsin Badgers, football could use some more deception on offense, it seems, rather just handing it off into the middle of the line so often. It ended up working against Purdue for a nice win, but some more diversity seems important going forward.

there was no real threat to run, because it wasnt working. if your theory was true, teams would try and run against the bucs. its a general rule. but its not the only rule. heres another rule.... if the run is not working, and you have aaron rodgers, you throw the ball. its your best chance. i know im being a wise ass, but i watched the same game you watched. and i watched aaron jones get 6 carries for 19 yards. i watched aj dillon get 3 carries for 6 yards. they did an end around. that was the longest run of the day. i love play action, but would you rather have 2nd and 4 after a six yard pass to cobb, or 2nd and 9 after a jones 1 yard run?

aaron jones 6 carries 19 yards. dillon didnt do much better. they couldnt establish the run. and when they tried, on first down, it ended up being second and long. the wft have a talented fron 4,but no corners, so the packers tried to exploit that. the run is not working with this currently constructed O line, and the only reason the pass is working, is aaron rodgers. they arent holding up, and hes making it work. bakh will be back, hopefully he will be himself. and meyers, same thing. get him, jenkins, bakh on the left side and they can try and establish the run a little more.

We've all heard it for years, and it held true again today; you cannot stop Taylor Heinicke, you can only hope to contain him.

Could our special teams be worse? Yes, without the trade for Bojo it would be a total sh*tshow.

I'm glad I didn't have seats in the north end zone for this one.

I know the "tough part of the schedule" is ahead, but we're 6-1 and I'm good with that.

Larry McCarren always points out "the other guys get paid, too," but I'm not so sure that applies to some of the WFT.

It's on to Arizona...

I know WFT didn't have any big returns today, but I crap my pants a little bit every time we kick off. Teams are running the ball out of the end zone from five yards deep, because they're pretty confident that they can make something happen. It's getting to the point where I almost wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to dedicate a roster spot to a kick off specialist who can just bomb it out of the back of the end zone every time. At least I wouldn't have to change my undies so much.

When I was in HS near the end of the season everyone took turns messing around and punting the ball. One of our WR's ended up kicking farthest with the most hang time of everyone, consistently. I'm pretty sure there is a player on the 53 already that could kick it thru the uprights on a kickoff if they would let players try it if Crosby cannot do it consistently anymore.

I remember Ezra Johnson handling kickoffs for awhile, but I think that was more because opposing teams were going after our kicker on kickoffs. I do remember that some teams (college and pro) have had other position players handle kickoffs from time to time.

Today was a very good win when you can get caught looking ahead to a short week road game against a tough Cardinals team.

The only thing I would add to your list unfortunately is on the bad side. He’s young but Henry Black had a R-o-u-g-h day. He flat out missed several tackles and was struggling to cover. I think the blocked kick should be on the snapper - when the ball hit the defender it was sideways, so something was off on the snap and/or hold. As Olson said, it might've been a miss even if it wasn't blocked.

I like to think you're right, Irish_Cheesehead.
Gary may be more concerned about the integrity of his assignments than wildly chasing stats.
If so, it's likely the stats will come in good time.

He's a quality starter but great? If he was great he'd have big sack numbers given his speed and power. What would be great is if he was your 2nd best OLB, not your first.

To be honest, without Heinicke this game is a laugher.

When do we start to call attention to Dillon's ball security issues?

Even with their red-zone issues, this defense has surrendered 17 points per game since New Orleans. That'll win football games.

I'll say it here: this offense misses MVS. Sure, #12 likes to waste a few plays per game going deep, but his deep work opens up the underneath and the offense is more explosive.

1-0 this week...

DeGuara and/or Gaffney would have helped a little against their DL.
For once, the special teams did ok, no blatant bad plays.
It looks like the offensive game plan did not intent to utilize the run, taking advantage of a secondary that is struggling.
The bad officiating affected WFT more than GB.

The blocked field goal was all on Crosby. That doesn't mean GB should not be fixing it. Tonyan whiffed again, IIRC. The block had some penetration but the guy was falling over and his hand was shoulder height.

Patrick, Runyan at times, had issues. OTOH, Jonathan Allen is simply elite. OL slid protection one way and WA crossed their face while the packers left creases and the outside. Allen up a crease and Ionides free outside. Still, 6 QB hits in the first half and zero in the 2nd half.

Big Dog is a bad man.

Dillon can't fumble like that, not twice.

Lowry keeps doing stuff. Keke looks better. Clark was very active today. Got pressure but gave up gap integrity once of twice including on Heinicke's 38 yard run.

McLaurin is good. Otherwise, CBs looked good. Good day for Chandon.

Maybe GB should consider using a 2nd rounder on an ILB? Please? Because Campbell with solid tackling by Amos limiting gains is really cleaning up the middle and crossers.

Re Heinicke's 38 yard run -

If you get the chance to watch it again you will see Gary getting illegally held by his blocker..... the guy had hold of his collar and shoulder pads from behind... it was a terrible no-call.

Happens to Gary at least once per game. He's too fast and powerful for OL to handle on bull rushes. And Green Bay should bring this up to the League office, before Gary gets a serious neck injury.

It pains me somewhat to say this, but maybe Gary needs coaching to "sell" it better when they are doing these egregious stunts on him........ as sad as that sounds.

Being thick hipped he doesn't seem to bend as well around the corner as guys like Chase Young and Harold Landry (with slighter frames). The trade off is that he never gets over-powered and contains the edge well; but he gets hooked up a lot - never around the corner "clean", with a direct route to the QB.

A win is a win in the week-to-week NFL, I'll take it. But an underwhelming game that we won't get away with to the better teams. Thought we got beat in the trenches but the D did come up big when it had to. We need to get healthy if we are going to challenge in December. If we get all of out players back and don't have any other big injuries I like our chances. Too much smiling from 12. GPG!

Fair enough, but perhaps a little overstated. I would suggest that the packers defensive line got the better of Washington's OL. I agree that Washington's defensive line was really tough and gave GB fits, thought GB got the pass protection adjusted in the second half.

Washington's front 4 has four first round picks, all recent (since 2017): Chase Young (#2 overall), Daron Payne (13th), Jonathan "stud" Allen (17th) and Montez Sweat (26th). None of them were misses. They are just really good. Their backup, Matt Ioannidis, would easily be #2 DL for GB.

It is an impressive investment in the front 4. Highly touted prospects that are all turning out to be good NFL players. Well done by WFT.
But it is also an interesting case study of how not having a franchise QB will still keep you from being a winner despite having one of the best DL's in the league.
Also, I liked the going for it on 4th down early in the game inside the WFT 20 yard line. Yes, play aggressive

The O-line was beaten in the first half and Rodgers was sacked three times and pressured several more times. However the second half the O-line made some adjustments and played better. I don't believe Rodgers was sacked in the second half and certainly had more time in the pocket.

Other than the opening drive, the defense played decently most of the game, particularly in the red zone. But for Heinicke's running, WFT would not have threatened much at all in the game. My only real complaint about the defense is Henry Black needs to learn to take better angles on runners. He whiffed on at least three tackles because of his poor judgement on angles.

Okay, I'll respond: Gary has been getting better every week and it hasn't gone unnoticed, but we've been waiting for that monster impact game--the stuff that shows up on the highlight reel. Love it!

Savage: The tackling needs to improve.

AR: Thought he showed much more patience than usual; love it!

J. Smith: Pretty slow going here; I was hoping for better, but patience, patience....

Crosby: Starting to make me nervous; on the blocked FG, the hold looked good, the ball was just kicked too low.

Slaton: Give the big man credit for the block!

Barry: Might want to think about keeping a spy on the QB in certain situations next game.

Sullivan: Has been quietly solid, glad to see him get the INT.

Statistically, this game doesn't look great. We were significantly out gained in yardage. The running game was anemic and yielded a fumble. We had a FG blocked.

The team didn't bring its A game, nor should we expect it yet with all the key players out with injuries. However, they made the big plays when it counted, especially on defense. This was a win for the unsung #2 players and back ups, with Allen Lazard leading the charge (taking nothing away from Adams' incredible contested catch which was the play of the game).

It's been a trademark of LaFleur's teams that they find a way to dispatch lesser opponents with workmanlike, if lackluster, performances.

Arizona will be a huge test.

It would sure be nice if we could have Bahk back for this one!

Random Thoughts: A win is a win. Never how ugly it looks, all that matters is it is not the big L. Once again a short handed team with many of it quality starters out on defense and offense found a way. And on a short week. Washington has a first rate HC who has been giving other teams fits for years. Packers for the most part adjusted to WFT team unscouted looks on offense/defense and held when necessary. Not pretty, but good enough in all three phases of the game. I need a (root) beer...

I'll say the same thing as last week: gritty win, wasn't always pretty, but I'll take it. This team just finds ways to win, and that's all you can ask for.

I don't care much for style points, and as banged up as this team is right now, that alone is impressive. What impressed me the most was the red zone D today. They stood tall on a number of occasions. Sure, WFT was missing their two starters on their right hand side, but to stop them that many times in the red zone was impressive and builds confidence.

What worries me: at a certain point, the injuries and one dimensional nature of our offense will catch up to us. Without Rodgers this game is a loss at home. He makes throws that look so easy, but the lack of a running game and the reliance on Adams should concern LaFleur.

At a certain point, we will run into a team that is well coached and talented enough to shut down Adams and pressure Rodgers enough to get us off balance. What I hope to see is a renewed commitment to the running game, as well as getting Tonyan going. I think part of the problem with Tonyan's slow start is he's been called to block a lot more than usual, helping out these back-ups on the O-line. Perhaps if Bakhtiari and MVS come back, that'll open things up a little bit more.

Onto Arizona!!

On at least one of Tonyan's explosive plays, he didn't chip first. I think having to chip is throwing off the timing of some plays.

I am not sure if Tonyan chipped on his other explosive reception as I haven't watched any highlights or a replay. I can't really re-watch games because I cut the cable cord years ago and I have a well-deserved reputation for frugality.

A win is a win. I’d rather have an ugly win rather than an ugly loss.

Our defense stepped up and made stops when it counted. I do believe that the WFT got a bad call on their QBs TD run that was called back and followed by his goal line fumble.

Loved the TD play to Tonyan and Adams sideline catch.

I don’t understand 40 pass plays called including 3 sacks and 2 scrambled by Rodgers versus only 15 run plays. Doesn’t make sense why we’re not getting the ball in Jones hands. Someone needs to work with Dillon on ball security.

We should not be having problems with STs 7 games into the season. It’s on coaching at this point.

Despite everything I love the effort this team gives on both sides of the ball. When we get our guys back we could become a dominant team. GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

I'll take the win. It's important to pad the lead in the Black and Blue division as we have a rough stretch coming up. Theoretically, we could lose a couple of games in the upcoming stretch and still be leading the division. This team just answers the bell. It's all about getting healthy at the right time.

Just a few fun stats, with all due qualifications for small sample sizes, limited set of (some questionable) opponents, and the legitimate fear that MLF will call me a loser -- after 7 games:
(1) In terms of both total yards allowed per game, and points allowed per game, the Packers defense is 7th best in the NFL;
(2) In terms of passing yards allowed per game, the Packers defense is 6th best in the NFL;
(3) At +5, the Packers as a team are tied for 6th in the NFL in turnover differential.

All those stats include the New Orleans game. As a meaningless statistical exercise, if you remove the Saints from the calculations, the numbers make the Packers defense look elite. Bizarrely, for a change of pace, the offensive stats are pretty much mediocre across the board.

I assume that Arizona will blow all of that up, but you never know!
