Gut Reactions: Packers take care of 49ers

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers victory over the 49ers

  • This game was cathartic. Don't even care it was against the JV version of the 49ers.
  • Shout out to MVS for bouncing back from a tough drop and catching two touchdowns
  • Tough butchers bill tonight. Hope none of these injuries are long term.
  • Can't take much from this game but love to see the Packers handle a team they should handle.
  • Understand the Packers were down a bunch of guys and were thin at RB but no way in hell should Aaron Jones should have been gettiing carries in the 4th quarter.
  • I can't believe they played this game.
  • That first TD catch by Davante was absolutely insane.
  • Love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

I wish I could pick stocks as well. From this mornings post:

"So in the interest of fun, I', thinking that Packers should try to win this 50-0. That would prove - something. But even under MLF, they don't seem to show much interest in scoring once the go up 2+ scores. But if the Packers go up 21-0 at halftime, I bet the NFL calls and tells everyone to make it look better so as not to ruin the money train. So I'll have to settle on 30-14."

If Josh Jackson wasn't a 2nd round pick would he be on the 53? The obly thing he's good for is if I get lonely he's guarenteed for a hug or at least a hold.

Between Jackson and Samuels the Packers may have two of the stupidest CB's in the league. The problem is is that you just can't fix stupid.

Samuels played his first game of any kind as a Packer yesterday. I don’t really find the confusion unsurprising.

As for Jackson, I’m not really sure about the roughness penalty. I thought it was pretty tacky as the player was still pumping his legs and I find it hard to complain about a player taking his guy to the ground aggressively when we’ve been calling for more committed tackling all season.

To be fair i though the aggression. Penalty at least showed fire and was somewhat borderline.

I believe if you compare the stats of Kevin King and Josh Jackson you won't see a huge drop off if any at all. Just WATCH where Pettine lines him up on EVERY play no matter the down and distance...He's 10 yards off on 3rd and 4!!!

Now I'm not saying Jackson is better than King or great by any means. BUT lining ANY CB 10 yards off on a 3rd and 4 play is not going to gain positive results most times.

Agree.....I'm fine with Jackson. King is gone & any money he gets overpaid for can go to keep superstars Aaron Jones & David Bahktiari. Those guys will (and should) cost a fortune & we need to keep them. King's nothing special whatsoever.

Jackson is okay & will keep improving.

King is one of the best red zone corners in the league. I certainly don’t think Jackson has yet shown himself anywhere close. Playing Hackson as he is suggest Pettine and co feel the same. This from someone who has been pleasantly surprised by Jackson’s play.

That comment is BS! Jackson's not perfect but he isn't bad. That PI call was a crap call. Yes the PF call is legit, but that will happen from time to time. Blame the DC if you're going to blame anyone

Go back and watch the Vikings game where Jackson has an obvious hold on Thielen in the end zone on 3rd and goal. Or on ST in that game when he has q clear run qt the FG kicker on a high snap and doesn't even try. I saw 1 good play out of Jackson all year. He's a 2nd round pick in his 3rd year. Bust.

You may be a better talent evaluator than you realize. I mean, Jeff Janis made some damn big plays, too... much bigger than the one MVS just made. Nevertheless, since April 2019 Jeff Janis has been the proud owner/operator of Janis Tire and Auto in Oscoda, Michigan. (Go ahead. Google it).

Will MVS ever amount to more than the coach killing, grease-monkey-in-waiting that Jeff Janis was? Honestly, I doubt it more and more with each passing game.

With MVS, the question has always been consistency. I don't think we're any closer to getting a positive answer to that question at this point. Which seems like an answer to me. I think he's always going to be a guy that is wildly inconsistent.

If SF had not been playing a JV offense, that early drop might be considered a turning point in the game. And I'm not going to give him credit for SF missing Samuel, Aiyuk, Kittle, Moestert, et al.

I think you're right on MVS. Certainly he ran past a secondary that inexplicably lost track of him on the first TD, but that second TD was a nice adjustment and focus to make the catch. One-trick pony?

We know MVS can get deep. That in itself is incredibly valuable as a tool on the armory. The second TD was much more pleasing. A decisive, well timed move in the red zone. If MVS starts to do even a little more of those he will become much a more valuable and diverse threat.

I find it ridiculous to see people complain about a 3rd receiver late round pick who has given us a legitimate deep threat, pulls defenses and scored two touchdowns because he isn’t a starter.

Even if MVS never improves he has value. It will be interesting to see if that increases with Lazard. Our problem has been that there has been no third receiver to really threaten and take advantage of what Adams and MVS do to defenses or pull defenses off them. Adams’ brilliance had carried us, but it’s somewhat unrealistic to expect MVS to be of similar quality at this point.

Remember Adams was beset with drop issues until it all clicked. MVS could yet make a jump. He was a one trick pony coming in. If he does more of what we saw in his second TD, that will be a big step forward. In the meantime, we should get our WR 2 back in Lazard next game. That will benefit everyone.

"I find it ridiculous to see people complain about a 3rd receiver late round pick who has given us a legitimate deep threat, pulls defenses and scored two touchdowns because he isn’t a starter."

It's not really complaining about the fact that he is a legit deep threat that can put up multiple TD performances. It's more the fact that he's among the league leaders in dropped passes and disappears for entire games. In short, he's wildly inconsistent. Which makes him unreliable. That's a word used to describe guys that hit the waiver wire, not the ones signing contract extensions

In 4 games, he put up 13 catches for 258 yards and 3 TDs.
In the other 4 it was 5 catches for 56 yards and 0 TDs.

And this has been a recurring pattern for 3 straight years. At some point, potential needs to be realized. If you think it is "ridiculous" that people expect consistency and improvement, I think it says far more about you than it does about them.

"You can only play the team on your schedule."

True. Which is why you measure performance against a standard that does not depend on an easy opponent. That SF team was completely incapable of capitalizing on mistakes by the Packers. That does not mean those mistakes don't matter. Just that they didn't matter yesterday.

MVS drop was because he turned his head before he caught it at the last second. Speculate he may have been thinking about their top flight MLB coming down hill to hammer him. It happens. Lack of focus. Lazard just catches and doesn't think about anything else. Hopefully he comes off IR with the same hands he left with and little rust. That would be cool.

On Jeff Janis’ big plays canard above: nearly all in one game. I’m a believer that MM totally failed to use Janis’ skill set offensively. I think LaFleur would have got value from him as a piece in the offense. That said, that doesn’t help rescue your comment.

Yeah, it was McCarthy's fault. Not one team in the NFL except for GB felt comfortable to put Jeff Janis on the field of play even for one snap - not one single team, not one single snap - but yeah, it was McCarthy's fault. LOL.

Game was over at halftime. Packers played well but tough to take much away from this game with such an undermanned SF team. Defense appeared to play with a sense of urgency tonight but again this was a preseason offense for SF.

Rodgers, Adams, Jones and MVS all played well on offense. The OL played well and adjusted well with all the injuries. Good job by the coaching staff preparing on a short week with players lost to COVID-19 and late decisions about playing the game.

Use the extra days to rest up and heal up. Hopefully we get our players back in time for Jacksonville. Good win.

I did notice that sense of urgency especially at the los. They just need to bring that week in week out. This d can give up 20 to 25 a game as long as the offense stays healthy. Its the long brutal drives that really knock the sails out of this d. I noticed early they were even losing momentum until p smith forced the pick. They just need to stay focused and stay fired up. They are not gonna shut anybody down. But they have the talent to make plays. Especially if p smith shows up.

What? I don't even get your point. So you're saying that it's OK for teams with a huge lead to "run up the score," but it's somehow horribly wrong for teams with a big deficit to score "garbage time" points?

Just play football, for shit's sake. If I"m Shanahan, I'm sure as hell pushing hard to see what all of those backups are able to do. Some of those dudes will be your starters next week, or for the rest of the season, or even for future seasons. Why WOULDN'T you try to get them some real game experience?

Also, I don't give a flying %&!#*& about sports bettors. If they lose their asses, good for them.

Can't get over excited about a game you're supposed to win but , Josh Jackson is a mystery like he just started playing football , was still some poor tackling out there and missed coverages , if Alexander is out for awhile we are very thin at corner ,can't depend on king , also at least 3 more missed interceptions . but a road win in four days is still a positive thing.

Hollman appeared to hold up well on the other side. Jackson has yet to be tested deep on the perimeter consistently. SF did not have the ability at WR or QB to do that. Minnesota did not need to. The last time he was he gave up a huge PI.

I like tyler ervins production. He had his best offensive game today. But my favorite moment was after warner and jones got into that little scuffle and afterwards rodgers just kinda playfully fucked wit warners facemask. Some people might find that odd. But its actually just another tiny little genius move by rodg. Warner was roughing up aaron jones and it was getting heated. So instead of escalating it, rodgers does this weird little grab at warners mask just to take the edge off a bit. Some guys see thaf as soft. I see a qb protecting his running back.

What I have been saying MVS gets open - the drop is always a killer because it is usually on 3rd down and our D doesnt get the ball back, But he stretches the field and that helps Adams who is out of this world, Our D stills sucks at tackling - we saw what a good Middle linebacker can do for you - San Fran has one. Happy that Summers finally made a middle linebacker play . At least he made one play. Preston after I was dumping on him at least made some plays tonight - not yet enough to get out of my bad books. Why cant we stop the end sweep - not only cant stop it but it always goes for at least 20 yards? Tonight we didnt really use the tight ends - but that could have been their defense or our scheme - will see when I get a chance to look at the game again. In any case - this was a game that I had as an L before the season started and now we are still ahead of where I thought we would be when the season started - Now with the long week of prep - lets not take the Jags for granted and come out lethargic

Why cant we stop the end sweep? Cus we dont consistently set the edge. Cus the ilbs are inconsistent and in and out with injuries. And our d line doesnt win the los enough. I will say that they did an ok job on the los at san fran. Even dean lowry. But they need to bring it on a week to week basis. Cus san fran was banged up, but there o line was mostly intact. And they had 55 total rush yrds. But like u said. Dont come out lethargic. Theres still alot to prove.

I'm a little disappointed that the TE's weren't really a part of the game plan. I know the 49ers have not gave up much to TE's this year, but they haven't played anyone with good TE's really. Only Evan Engram comes to mind, but he has been a disappointment this year.

I thought it was interesting that san fran threw in green bays "play that can't be guarded" play into their first drive. They set it up with an 8 yard run about two plays prior using the H back to kick out the end. Gained 6 yards on the pass to their H back (it still worked), but that was the only time I recall them running it. Green bay defended it fairly well.

They shifted their defensive line this week to match the offenses strong side when the offense motioned. I don't recall them doing that at all against Minnesota. The results were significantly better. The times they stopped doing it the 49ers started getting some occasional chunks of yards. As a result, Green bay started using it almost every play they motioned. Shannahan started using the motion to shift the line and then run stuff weak side like the screens. Pretty cool to see the cat and mouse stuff even though it wasn't competitive. You can always see Shannahan making those adjustments. I don't think MLF is quite as good at that as Shannahan is.

Speaking of the screens, anything slower developing being ran at about the numbers just seems like a big play waiting to happen against this pass defense anytime they go zone. I think offenses will keep that in their back pocket for whenever they need it until green bay shows they can stop it. Pettine must be compensating for a bad secondary. I am not a fan of cover 2. They keep running it and it's getting ate up between the backers and the safeties. It's been ate up all year. I would like to see some more aggressive coverages myself. In fact, the coverage where savage nearly had an interception is much more of what I would like to see. Man coverage, single safety deep, and a robber roaming the middle. I understand having CB's staggered up to 5 yards deep to keep offenses from being able to design plays causing defenders to run into each other. But after about 7 yards of cushion it's getting a little ridiculous. I saw them play the corners as much as 10 yards off on 3rd and less than 10. I don't like that recipe. Good win. Lots of stuff that improved from last week. Still plenty of stuff to improve on. That's all I got.

We had backups as corners after Alexander went out. It’s a tactic to help them contain big plays and against that QB, to take out perimeter. Worked pretty well when we were not all running away from receivers as happened late in the game due to blown coverages from our 4th stringers.

Not to disagree generally, I hate the soft stuff almost always, particularly with King and Alexander. Last night I do see some validity though.

Totally agree about the cover 2 -- besides it is supposedly to stop the big TD catches but a 40 yarder down into the red zone isnt much of a win. Tighten it up - they will score quicker and we get the ball back - and we might just get a turnover -out tackling isnt that good anyway. Our linebackers are not that fast to drop back into that middle zone - Raven Green is the only ballhawk hitter type in that area - we are really missing something in there - like when we had Woodson , even when Williams and Hyde we had some better chances than now.

Radom thoughts: Raven Greene MVP. (Most Valuable Packer) Packers played their base for the most game, and while Greene was on a 'pitch count' his presence on the weak side took away the 49ers cut back lanes in the run game. It's clear that he makes the Smiths Bros and Gray very dangerous in the pass rush and allows them to play gap coverage in the run. Packers did go to a straight 3-4 late in the game when they were ahead by two+ scores. 6-2: Play who is on your schedule. That's the way it is. Packers took a hurt short of personnel 49ers squad, and pounded the #@%& out of them. Good. Coaching: No torches and pitchforks this week. MLF nor Pettine was out coached or out schemed. Both had their players primed and assignment sure, and it showed throughout the game. Covid-19: I know the NFL is in a tough spot, but you got to wonder if delaying the game to Sunday or Monday night still might be the right call. Both teams had a surge of positive cases that turned out to false this time. But the NFL has had a number of cases earlier this season that turn out to be positive. I'm with '61 on this, this was a real gamble on the leagues part. Roster: This team is what it is. There will be no outside FA player pickups. (sigh, no DL help...) Gute's call, with what's going on guess I can't blame him. Skill positions: Heck of game from all. Adams had three on him and the 49ers still couldn't stop him. MVS NO YES YES! Aaron Rodgers is a bad BAD man... :-) I need a (root) beer.

Gute didn't do his job at the 2019 deadline, didn't do his job in 2020 offseason by freeing up more money for DL in free agency, didn't do his job by getting glaring needs in 2020 draft, didn't do his job at the 2020 trade deadline and pick up a minimum DL or #2 WR. Gute inherited a very poor team overall from TT. He has made huge strides to improve it but the other changes needing made above are why we did not hoist a Lombardi in 2019 and again this year in 2020-21.

Gut Reactions...

WHEW!!!

WHY was Aaron Jones in half way through the 4th quarter UP by 31 and running the ball into the heart of the 49ers defense. Every play they keyed on him and he was getting hit by 3 or 4 defenders every time...SMH

Awesome thing by Rodgers running to the end zone to congratulate MVS after his 2nd TD Catch. He clearly does lack confidence and Rodgers pumping him up is what a good leader does...AWAYS.

Raven Greene makes a HUGE difference on this defense.

Rest up and get healthy. You did EXACTLY what myself and others hoped for but didn't think would happen.

I think jones was in cus every time tyler ervin got hit he went flying 5 yards. Them niners especially warner n tartt were layin lumber. I was honestly calling for john lovett in the 3rd quarter. With that being said. I like tyler ervin in the screen game. And on quick outs. Hes a small target but exciting in space.

Because apparently 4 RB's are not enough this season w/ covid. Dexter got hurt after a couple runs up the middle. Could have used the fullback earlier though. He's soft around the middle so not sure how many snaps he could take in shape wise.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah. You people are never ever happy. Complaining on everything.

Yes SF team was and is in terrible situation. Lot of starters are on IR, or have covid, or just injury. But last week was Packers too. Now when Packers have convincing victory you are complaining about almost everything. I have some negative remarks - how the hell Aaron Rodgers can miss alone Davante by overthrowing him! Cut him. he is guilty for one bad play. At least one in every game. Like MVS, like Davante, like ESQ, like (fill any name here).

All this is todays NFL. You never know who will play next game from your roster of 90. Because we were short on RB this game. Next game it might be shortage in TE or OL. We are playing w/o David Bakhtiari, Aaron obviously miss Alan Lazard, last game was the worst officiating I saw in my short "career" of football fan. It was worse than Seattle game in 2012. And Packers obviously underestimate Dalvin Cook (who might be better than McCaffery and Kamara together), as well as Vikings. This is today NFL.

I agree with Aaron, why to play Aaron Jones in 4Q (my only complain about the game) and I love this team!

Croat!

Good to see you're still winning the turf war and the Covid Monkey's haven't caught up with you.

You've been following this team long enough. Win or lose, Packers fans are going to find something to piss and moan about.

Stay well.

A good win but reminded me of a preseason game where the coaches are out of synch and one team’s starters end up playing the other team’s second string.

Lol. I had the same impression. It looked like a pre-season game. I looked up players’ numbers well into the 4th quarter. How big is the practice squad?

Adams - wow just wow!
MVS - cut him / Wait scratch that, love him!
Barnes - again looked good until injury
Summers looked like freakin Brian Noble on the 4th down stuff, other than that, career special teamer.
Rodgers- smooth as a Krolls butter burger wit curds.
Savage sighting - dude showed he can play ball, but must have been eating those greasy curds before he dropped that easy pick.
The Smiths and Gary are waking up man!
Kudos to a re-shuffled O Line!
Great to see Jones doing Jones things, Ervin too!
D Line much better tonight
Great win, now get some rest and get ready for the second half of the season stretch run at 6 & 2.
Life is good today

Patrick will be the starting Center Next year. Lan Caster has a shoulder hurt. But I still want him to start. MVS has turned the corner.

I agree on Patrick.

I hope you're right about MVS. Sometimes, a marginal player needs a game like this to build confidence and start taking that next step. Hopefully, this is that game/moment for him.

"Can't take much from this game," ... really Nagler? This is the NFL dude, not high school. You learn something from EVERY game. Despite the injuries, the Packers did exactly what they were supposed to do. You play who's on your schedule. They could learn:

Their depth in their o line
Mason is still perfect
Swerve is a difference maker
MVS is gaining some confidence
Davante might be the best WR in the league
Coach calls some GREAT plays

Plenty they learned.
