Gut Reactions: Packers refuse to be who they should be

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers loss to the Commanders.

  • This team is broken.
  • The defense GIFTED the offense a touchdown and they still lost.
  • The lack of complenatary ball being played, mostly from the offense, is astounding.
  • Aaron Jones is a superstar. Someone tell the Packers.
  • What do the Packers do at practice? Because it sure as hell isn't pay attention to the details.
  • The number of times this team commits some lazy ass penalty is amazing.
  • That said, the call against Stokes was classic "Run into the DB and get a penalty" bullshit.
  • Amari Rodgers should be taken off returns, but no, he shouldn't be cut.
  • Can't hate on Jaire giving up a TD to McClurin. Their best on our best. At some point, those guys get paid too.
  • Way, way too many drops.
  • That said, it would help if the QB would display a bit more accuracy.
  • "But Aaron, his thumb is busted." Dope. So start Love.
  • If I see one more zone run out of shotgun, I'm going to jump in front of a train.
  • Why this team just flat out refuses to feature Aaron Jones instead of Aaron Rodgers is beyond me.
  • Shout out to Preston Smith who played one hell of a game.
  • Same goes for De'Vondre Campbell.
  • The problem with the final TD drive is that it gets people excited for the idea of the offense going tempo and throwing it around. Yeah, great, against a team playing off protecting a two score lead. Absolute fools gold.
  • Going to be fascinating to see how this team responds throughout the week.
  • The Packers are bad on October 23rd. That doesn't mean they'll be bad on Novermebr 23rd. We'll see.
  • All of that said, this team is being held hostage by a quarterback they paid handsomely.
  • Go Pack.

I said this on another thread, but I'm going to be that guy and repeat it because you referenced it too, Nags: "All of that said, this team is being held hostage by a quarterback they paid handsomely."

THIS. This is what I meant when I said it was going to be hard for this team to be likable and everything had to go right for them to be even better than mediocre in the annual pre-season CHTV fan poll. They suck. They're old and bad. And unlikable.

Green Bay very well could be 3-9 going into Chicago in December.

I'll always love the Packers, but this is what happens when you pair a descending team with an old 50m QB and a 25m LT whose knee doesn't work anymore. Unfortunately, having a brain as a fan of a losing team is like having a person you love who has a problem and just won't listen to reason. The best thing you can do at times is call the spade what it is. Then, either cut them off or tell them repeatedly they have a problem and hold them accountable.

The Packers have a problem. They should have traded 12 in the offseason and now they're going to be bad for a very long time. They're getting what they deserve. In hope they recover as quickly as possible, I hope they continue to lose so badly that 12 will retire in the offseason. That's the only way out I see for the next 3-5 years.

And if that doesn't happen? This team will suck for years and everyone in the building will be fired before the healing can begin in 2025 or 2026.

Yep if Rodgers had only played better on defense and not dropped so many passes that would have moved the chains instead of killing drives.

2. Clearly, the off-target passes from the 50m AAV QB is not the QBs fault. All of them. Someone else.

It appears to me you are the the f**king drunk one. Had the defense been able to stop anything in the second half Rodgers would have more than likely won this game.

"We have a top 5 defense, the Packers don't need any WRs, this team will be better without Adams". The greatest comments from 2021 from the great Bearmeat and a few other idiotic commenters.

I never said "we don't need WRs" I said: "This team is not going to be good."

The problems with this team go deeper than the QB. But they start there. He's paid the big bucks. He gets the big L.

Rodgers would have likely won this game…

Is that with or without the six points + PAT supplied by the Packers defense?

Get a grip, the offense, and that includes the guy your mouth serves as a holster for, Aaron Rodgers, is atrocious.

October 24, 2022 at 03:52 pm

Tony Dungy & Jason Garrett said it best after the SNF crew reviewed the Commanders/Packers game: 'He (Rodgers) needs to play a lot better'. They reviewed 2 clips, (there were more according to Dungy) where the Packer receivers were wide open, but Rodgers threw to the check down guy, Doubs and Dillon and didn't throw it where the receiver/back could get the ball in stride to get the first down. Actually one was a pass at Dillon's feet where he had to make a shoe-string catch and got tackled before reaching the first down marker. The other to Doubs was a screen pass, two receivers and a tight-end where the tight end blocked, Doubs cut across the block of the other receiver but the defender defeated the block of that receiver and knocked the ball out of Doubs hands while he tried to make a juggling catch that would not have gotten the first down anyway.
This occurred while the other receiver sprinted towards the end zone with no defender within 5-yards...a walk in TD is what Dungy said. Dungy said the Packers have run this play so many times 6 games into the season that the Commanders knew Rodgers wouldn't go down field with the ball. 'Throws' as Dungy said Rodgers made on a regular basis in the past, but doesn't now.

Garrett said Rodgers struggles comes down to 'trust.' 'Rodgers doesn't trust his receivers to get open or catch the ball, (the two clips of receivers open), and Rodgers doesn't trust his protection, 2 clips on two different pass plays were the blocking was good enough where Rodgers had a nice pocket and could wait another second or two for his receiver to uncover, but instead Rodgers bailed and threw the ball away.

So yes you're right, Rodgers doesn't catch the passes, his receivers need to but he needs to take what the defense gives him, which he hasn't in the past when Adams was taken away, and now not at all.

He's seeing ghosts that are not there 'defenders' in his face. And not making throws he made in his sleep in the past. Rodgers' was hit (1) time in the game against the Commanders with (2) pressures. That is darn good against that front, (one of the best in the NFL). And that's after Tom replaced Bak at left tackle, Jenkins moved to left guard, Myers at center, Runyon at right guard and Yosh manning the right tackle position. That's (1) starter in his original position from the previous week where Rodgers was sacked I believe 4 times and hit like 8 or 9 times.

That's life as an NFL QB, and life as the 2 time NFL MVP with a salary cap hit that takes up almost 40% of the Packers cap. He took the money instead of giving the Packers a break to keep players. That's been his position since he took over. I don't blame him for taking that position, but from my point of view what's the difference between $75 million and $95 million. For him and all players its a status symbol thing. Whereas someone like me who has had lived a life of sacrifice, I'd rather give some of that money back so the Packers can keep other players he needs to be successful but that's just my opinion. I could take $75 million and easily invest this to last multiple life times. Actually I'd make it on $1 million. This just illustrates just how out of touch players are with the average fan.

Tony Dungy should have asked me for the assessment on Rodgers back in 2016. This isn’t new; I’ve been vocal about all these issues for the last 8 years since I first started noticing them.

I get called a hater and an idiot, but it’s literally all on tape for anyone to see with their own eyes. Rodgers trust issues and his unwillingness to throw proper balls to most WRs due to his lack of trust is a problem.

Whereas great QBs are purported to do more with less and elevate the level of play around them by means of facilitating, Rodgers Actually does less with more talent around him than many top tier QBsbecause of his trust issues and stubborn ego.

This game proved 2 major things:

1). I owe Zach Tom an apology. He held up well.

2) Matt LaFleur is a talentless hack who has no business being employed by the time he lands in Wisconsin. This was an abject display of offensive game planing, team discipline, coordination and man management. Bested by a very poor team and outcoached by a supposedly poor head coach.

Yes Tom held up well and has played pretty well in the limited time he's had on the field. What I want to know is which coach decided that Jake Hanson and Royce Newman were part of the best 5 lineman and played them game after game while the entire free world knew they were crap. That coach needs to be fired tomorrow. Sure mistakes are made, but this is clear malfeasance / incompetence to be that wrong.

I knew it was a bad sign when it took MLF forever to decide whether to take the penalty and force the Coms to repunt after Bisaccia already said take the penalty. I actually screamed at the TV to "take the penalty you moron"! He's coaching not to make mistakes. He's done.

the worst part about the illegal contact penalty on stokes was the announcers doubling down and talking about " point of emphasis". what is wrong with this league? why would something as petty as illegal contact be a " point of emphasis?" you know why the refs only called it 37 times last year? because in their hearts, they are football guys too, and they dont want to call that garbage. so shut the fuck up dean blandino, mike perrara, all you assholes stop trying to tell me how to feel about bullshit penaltys. Even the zebras know that this is professional football, not fantasy football. these refs and there "points of emphasis" are terrible for the sport, the point should be, let em play ball, and call the blatant shit. get rid of all this petty crap. the problem is, these rules are not to make the game better, theyre to pad offensive stats and make money. fantasy football makes money. the safety rules are an entire other debacle. theres plenty of rules put in place just to keep the lawyers away. with that being said, this teams broken. they got a bunch of calls that helped them last week and still lost.

There is nothing wrong with his thumb other then he wants to use it for an excuse to prop up his faltering ego.
Funny he doesn't complain about it when he completes a pass.
You cant tell me LeFluer didnt bend to Rodgers during the week and come up with okay simple, run, run again, pass to a guy in out, then run then pass 5 yards to someone in the flat, then run. If that aint a version of simplton nothing is.

- They're just not a good football team
- How many times do you see guys on defense standing around watching someone else make tackle and the runner goes for an extra 2-5+ more yards?
- WRs are beyond depleted at this point
- Still need more Jones. It's not 1a and 1b as discussed in offseason. Jones is clearly better or the offense is clearly better with Jones this year.
- Starting CBs make the all talk team.
- AR off target
- WR drops

- Not Cap-ologist but what is the dead money hit next year for AR and Bak not playing with the packers?

- The defense seems tame.

All the damn time. And when they do tackle it's just jumping on or high arm tackling. I focused on that today and was shocked at how bad they still are, even when desperate. It is the major reason they can never get off the field. Even what should be a 2 yd gain is always 5, 6 7 ,or a lot more.

If Aaron doesn’t see disarray he’s not looking. Then again, he wants to keep Rodgers even though we take him off returns. I think one catch in space turned his mind.

This team is rotten from the top down. This is not a learn from experience or get healthy day. This is a team with a directionless offense, undisciplined, mentally fragile and in a death spiral that can only be from the top. Who on earth is left that can’t out coach and adjust LaFkeur? Maybe Getsy or Hackett.

Thrice in three games lightning has struck. Or maybe we just proved that we are the rudderless vessel we’ve looked like each time.

I’d go with the latter and have a vacancy at Head Coach tomorrow and s new punt returner by Tuesday night. I’d be emptying my coffers for Peyton right now. The alternative is Murphy might not make his mandatory retirement after the mess coming.

. It's hard watching this offense.

.I'm trying to think of a team that's currently playing worse than GB right now? Houston?, It's not Washington anymore, because they just beat us.

. Doesn't help that Bakhtiari is back on the bench.

. Fire Rodgers as a punt returner.

. The troubling part is BG put a hurt on our future to field this team, ouch

. Buffalo game is going to be ugly

. Well, at least we'll beat the Bears again...right?

You are correct Gute hurt the current state and future of this team tremendously. It started with the 2020 draft by not moving up and selecting Jefferson instead of wasting a first round pick on a average QB. This team would look entirely different right now with Jefferson at WR #1.

I don't agree that the refs were the reason GB lost. Any team that cannot get ONE first down on 3rd down without a penalty being called is the main reason! And having a punt returner that fumbles once a game is inexcusable. If you take those 3 points off the board, what would the score have been?

Sometime the pain of desperation is the only way to get real change.
We saw some moderate measure of change when the Packers were so lacking in healthy wide receivers near the end of the game, that Amari Rodgers and Toure were able to get on the field -- with each contributing a catch, and an especially good one by Rodgers.
Now the questions are about potential big changes with the coaches. Do we fire anyone? Who do we replace them with? How does it all work with our $50-million quarterback?
How much do we change just to change, figuring it can't get any worse? How much do we change because we have a better alternative?
It seems this very day is a turning point in Packers history because of change, or the lack of it. Doing nothing is a decision in itself.

At the risk of posting the same thing I did last week, I will. Out coached. Defense played a good first half, but being on the field 44 of 60 minutes wears down defenses. Offense continues to be offensive. They kept Rodgers from getting hit, but couldn't block on the run Rogers continues to toss to the deep threat that we dont have Im mailing a dozen cans of stickum to the wide receivers in hope that they put it to use. WE NEED A DEEP GUY . Doubs may turn into that guy, Watson may turn into that guy., but they arent yet. Cobb is no longer a deep threat. AL isnt a deep threat, and Watkins isnt that guy either. I love the packers, but this team, from the coaches down, need a big kick in the ass. Shout out to AJ, Cambell, and Smith for playing big today. Go Pack!!

I am desperately looking for any kind of positive vibes to hang onto this season and I'm coming up empty.

Rodgers deserves a lot of the blame, but the receivers have bricks for hands. Yosh's holding penalties were brutal. Aaron Jones is great when they feel like giving him the ball, which is far too seldom. The defense comes out strong but gets gassed easily; a lot of this is a lack of complementary football on offense, but they also give up way too many long drives in the second half. Simply put, there are substantial and inexplicable execution issues at every single position.

As much as the players deserve blame here (and Rodgers in particular as the team's leader and reigning NFL MVP), though, I'm looking to the coaching staff and the front office at this point. If you cannot get a team with this much talent on both sides of the ball ready for game day week after week after week, that's coaching. The roster deficiencies that do exist, which are not sufficient to explain the Packers' ineptitude but clearly do not help, have not been adequately addressed by Gute and company. I don't think there's an in-season fix here, but anything is possible, I suppose.

I didn't expect the season to be this painful. I'm bitter and angry. If this was how this "all-in" season was going to turn out, I wish they had gotten the king's ransom a half dozen teams would have paid for Rodgers and started the rebuild around Love while we have some cheap years left on his deal.

Even if this year would have been pain-free, the right move would have been to trade Rodgers for a king's ransom and -continued- the rebuild of the team- find out what we have in Love, and adjust if needed for the future.

I was ready to move on after the brutal home loss to SF last year. This team has never been mentally tough in the MLF era and Rodgers has to be a big part of that equation. Still, I had some hope that there was enough here to make one more run at it. Never in my wildest dreams did I think an Aaron-Rodgers-led offense would look this bad after 7 games. Mental toughness is just one of many issues plaguing this team now. The Packers are lucky to be 3-4.

The right move would have been to move up and take Jefferson in the 2020 draft. Some are just to ignorant to see that.

Rodgers is the past, not the future.
The Packers have leveraged their future to hold on to the past.

You probably can't see it because Rodgers' navel is all you can see in front of you.

Couldn't move up that high EDP1959 to get Jefferson. Jefferson and Chase were long gone by pick 20 let alone at 26, which is where Gute moved up to get Love. Time to stop beating a dead horse. Where Gute failed was passing up receivers later that year and in 2021 when there were supposedly a lot Nelsons and Jennings worth drafting. No excuse for Gute NOT picking a receiver later in 2020 or 2021.

Many of us said they should have traded Rodgers in the off-season and got what they could for him and take our lumps with MLF as the 'COACH' with Love the QB to see if MLF CAN coach and of IF Love can play. If both failed in 2022, the Packers would get more high draft picks and could draft one the excellent QBs coming out, and not have Rodgers albatross of a salary cap now going forward. Doing the same thing over and over again isn't changing things, it's the definition of insanity.

This offense has now scored 24 points in their last 10 quarters. That's 2.4 points per quarter. Or 9.6 points per game over that stretch. Against the easy part of their schedule. With a 50 million dollar QB and the highest paid LT in the game who rarely plays.

Let that sink in.

So you are going to run into a stacked box. That is just plain stupid. Opposing defenses can play man to man because they know this pitiful group of receivers can't get open and if they do they can't catch.

You're right. A low or dropped pass that stops the clock is much better. AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones never break tackles, never get first downs. I'm a convert. Pass all the time. Let your aging MVP go out swinging. The 50 million was a thank you. Do what you want.

Thought it was telling one of their(our) biggest gains from scrimmage of the season by our offense came on the last play where we resembled a scene from The Longest Yard (the good version) only to see it potentially get called back by a silly foul. And yet this is what the organization appears to be on the field , i.e. a group of clowns and likely as well off it as with the suits and Polos. Judging by the improved O line play guessing Stenavich was more hands on this week?

Hey, it was a nice debut for Zach Tom.
Seriously, he looked pretty good for a somewhat-last-second rookie debut at LT, a position nobody outside of the organization ever projected him to play.

It's too bad Nijman looked grabby out there; would have been a really great moment to see if both Zach and Nijman had great days today- to know the future bookends are already up to the task.

Reshuffled O-line held up pretty well, but two holding calls on Yosh were costly.

I wonder if MLF will remind us post-game that we should have run more? A. Jones, Dillon: 12 attempts, 38 yards.

The secondary is confused or AWOL at times. Amos and Douglas played well, but Stokes has taken a giant step backwards. Receivers were far too open in the short perimeter, and on one occasion running free in the slot.... Jaire not thinking when he failed to push a WR out of bounds late in the game--it may have cost us a chance at a game-winning FG.

At least Campbell cashed in on one of INT opportunities Heinecke gave us in the first half. Agree about Preston Smith.

Rush defense sucked, ditto with third-down defense. The Barry nightmare continues....Only one sack, and lost TOP 37-23.

Amari should be cut after Cobb returns. And you can't keep sending him out there to muff punts, which cost us three points this time.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Love late in the third quarter--at least he could have maybe converted a third down with his feet and brought a spark to this pathetic offense, which by the way, is mind-numbingly predictable (no surprise).

What's the rush to see how the team responds this time? Expecting something different?

First: I blame Gutey. This all started by paying Bahk. I don't care if he's an All-pro or not. He should have been released.
Second: You have to have a "veteran" starting OL, when you have Rookie WRs. What burns my butt is starting Tom at LT.
Why move Nijman? When Bahk is Done! The Lab experiment continues. Leaving a Sore thumb QB on eggshells.
Three- We all knew Amari Rodgers wasn't the answer!
Four- If you run the ball just 12 times with a QB that has a Sore thumb. Trade for a RT!

Packers just keep beating themselves with penalties and dropped passes. The offense has become unwatchable. Rodger is not throwing well but he still made his best throw of the game while on the run on the TD pass to Jones in the 4th quarter. Maybe we should move Rodgers to make throws more often. Given Rodgers overall performance so far this season we're basically watching how the Packers look without Rodgers. It's not very pretty or positive.

The defense continues to drop sure picks and takes penalties on what should be game changing plays. We're losing to QBs who are back from the league's dustbin. It doesn't look good right now and I don't see it getting any better with our coaching staff and our upcoming schedule. Thanks, Since '61

Since 61, Love can at least run for a first down or escape pressure and hit receivers. He did that in the Saints game (in mop up duty) and a bit in the Chiefs game. And he'll hand the ball off to Jones or if he doesn't then we'll know that MLF (and not Rodgers) was the culprit all along in changing running plays to pass plays. Either way we'd know more about Love and the coach so both can be sent packing at the end of 2022 if neither is any good.

Now that has to wait at least until the end of 2023. And the Packers get nothing for Rodgers after the Russell Wilson trade, (for a kings ransom) while Denver has nothing to show thus far b/c Schneider fleeced Denver. Wish he was the Packers GM. Carroll is laughing all the way to the bank right now b/c Pete's team is 4-3 with a journey-man QB and Denver is 2-5. They have a better record without 'Russ'. :)

Yet another loss. MLF and his Coaching Staff are Idiots. Trying the same stuff today that hasn't worked all Season. MLF has lost this Roster. The Defense at least at times have tried very hard but when you're out on the Field 40 Minutes out of every game, you get tired you make mistakes. I thought I was teleported back to the 1970s when Scott Hunter and Jerry Tagge were the Quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers hasn't played much better than that Illustrious pair this Season. Back then we weren't expecting a possible Super Bowl bid and a possible #5 Defense. Amari Rodgers may as well become a Receiver since he can't be a reliable Returner. He can't be worse than the Clowns they have out there on pass patterns now. are now 3 and 4 after 7 Games. Even if they were really good they probably would still lose to Buffalo but now its going to be a Massacre since we have a QB who can't throw better than Hunter or Tagge and no Receivers to speak of outside of Doubs. Coach LeFluer, now is the time that you really NEED to do your Job. If you keep letting the Team do whatever they want, we'll be out of the Playoffs before the 2nd Week in December!!!!!

How they should respond...
1). Trade Rodgers before the deadline. Last chance to get out of his ridiculous contract before it's too late. Time to see what Loves got and draft another if he's not the answer.
2). Fire Joe Barry and let Jerry Gray run the D until Jim Leonard is available.

Wonder if Aaron lost all his mojo when he had his hair cut? Another Samson?
What was LaFluer conferring and listening to his special teams coach? Looked like he took input before making a decision. Who is the head coach?
Wonder if all that Zen training has mellowed 12 and he is too centered?
This team gives no signs that it can fight it's way back, all the other teams keeps losing too, so weirdly we are still in it.

Is this a failure on the GM to not realize that?
Or on the coach?

Either way, bench him for "injury"

Time to open the trade window and cut our salary cap mess. Take whatever is offered for Bahk. Demand a first or second for Aaron Jones. Offer anything to take #12. Do anything possible to reduce the next five years of salary cap hell. Start the interviews for the next coaching staff.

The rebuild needs to start NOW. Yesterday was the first of many daggers in any playoff hopes for this mess of a team.

My gut reaction is really more about 2022 so far. It is that you could see this coming from a mile away. The OL has struggled. The QB is off from the last 2 years. The defense is not the Steel Curtain-like unit we read about this offseason. The coaching has not been the same level as previously under ML. When you boil everything down to level of importance, the bottom line is that the NFL is a passing league. Success most often correlates to controlling that better on both sides of the field.

So none of those things seem as significant as the chickens coming home to roost over years of ignoring the warning signs in the WR room that were laid bare when Davante Adams was no longer int that room to paper over the overall lack of talent. After that NFC CG loss in SF in year 1 of ML, Gute ID'ed that issue. He should have gotten to fixing it then. Or maybe it would have been good enough to simply draft Terry McLaurin at #75 instead of picking Jace Sternberger and letting McLaurin go @ #76. Putting that guy on the other side of the field yesterday could have easily changed the outcome, IMO. This site was full of whistling past the graveyard as beating up on soft regular season opponents took more importance than the ugly playoff exit that followed each one.

Terry McLaurin is not changing this shit show. Aaron Rodgers is a $50 Million dollar QB and leader of the offense and believes he is not the problem. That is a problem, he has been awful and innacurate. That and coaching are a massive issue and the biffest issues. The WR has not been good either but just a piece.

I think we're beyond the point of "easy answers" and "quick fixes" for the offense. They're bad at almost every level and you could argue that they're the most ineffective offense in the entire league.

If you want some sort of answer or fault, look squarely at Lafleur and Rodgers. They consistently hinder themselves with poor choices on the sideline and on the field.

Now "should" be a time for realistic reflection for GB management. Can this season really be saved? Should it be saved or is it too late? Should we admit the "all in" option - as it was planned and executed - has failed? With the trade deadline now approaching, one would think this to be an ideal time? And lastly, who is qualified to make those decisions?

This team is a train wreck and trending downward at an alarming rate. Do you really think one star WR will change it? Any one play could eliminate a star WR and put GB right back where it is now.

Its time to admit that all-in has failed and get on with a rebuild asap. Don't listen to the verbal rubbish coming out of AR or MLF. Trade Bakh and AR asap (either now or at the end of the season), take the dead money hits, and get on with a rebuild. The one big assumption here being that Mark Murphy and his "ship of fools" who orchestrated this shipwreck be shown the door. These people are clearly incompetent and have provided negative value to the GB football organization.

Go Pack Go. But "Go" with a realistic strategy and the right executives at the top!
