Gut Reactions: Packers punch Cardinals in the mouth

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers thrilling last second win over the Cardinals

  • Rasul Douglas revenge game
  • AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones are bad men.
  • Seriously, Dillon plowing through a guy for a first down and Jones driving through a dude for a touchdown was just *chefs kiss*
  • Loved seeing Winfree get his first action, though my heart was in my throat when he fumbled.
  • I'm not going to talk about the clock management.
  • Or the red zone play calling.
  • I SAID I"M NOT TALKING ABOUT IT
  • The Cardinals defense cried to the refs a lot
  • Hell of a job by Jerry Gray
  • Randall Cobb and the endzone just belong together.
  • Hey, maybe that failed fourth down play toward the end is why LaFleur kicked the FG in the NFC Championship...
  • Speaking of which, Rodgers was off most of the night.
  • Preston Smith played a hell of a game
  • Eight different guys caught passes tonight.
  • I think Dean Lowry killed a guy.
  • I love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Off the top of my head: They stopped the Saints at the goal line on opening night in 2011. That was the game with the 108 yd Randall Cobb TD on a kick return.

There must have been a one possession game against the Vikes or Bears where Jay Cutler or Christian Ponder or somebody threw an INT.

Great running game…I just wish they would have run it about 4 or 5 more times. Not sure Barry would have called an all out blitz at the end. Love Rasul Douglas. Love Gute for picking him up. Hate using all the timeouts early in every game. And the delay of game HAS to be the ugly this week. And Nags’ call of the interception on the watch party is worth a watch. Instant CHTV classic.

I'm with you, Bearmeat, work in Dillon at the goal line.
Especially after trying Jones once or twice, give the ball to Dillon.
Sometimes it seem the Packers have a seniority system in which Jones and Davante and Randall get precedent automatically.
It shouldn't be that way. All the players should be on board with whatever gives the Packers the best chance to win -- as decided by the head coach.
All things equal, I like going with the trusted veterans first most of the time, but not over and over again to a fault.
P.S. Having made this comment, it looked as though Jones did score that touchdown on our last drive. I don't see what was there on tape to overturn the touchdown. Would the official who made that reversal bet his house that Jones didn't make it?

Seniority is really just the older players being where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be - find the right hole, run the right route, etc.

In quotes situations, I have to go to the person who knows how to deliver the clutch play, not the young player still figuring it out.

But man, questionable RZ and time management aside, what a gutsy win!

Thats for sure. Seams we end up throwing the ball down close like that ALOT!! Drives me nuts. I dont know if 12 is checking out of the run or what but for my money give me Dylan 4 times in a row with first and goal from the 2 yard line and I like my chances. That pick by 29 saved a ton of questions on the goal line calls.

Mea Culpa: I thought we'd get boat raced. I was wrong. No 17,69,55,23,83,13... and they won, on a short week, on the road... against an undefeated team.

Unreal. This team has balls the size of church bells.

It really makes me wonder about NY office calling the refs. Remember the the concept, Replay will over turn the ruling on the field if there is clear visual evidence that the call is wrong. Now its, Best guess... I think he might have been down. You can not tell whether the ball touched the plane or not.

They try to determine the outcome of the game and want to keep it close as long as possible, its good for ratings and gambling. Its ruining the game.

I'm beginning to wonder as well?

The NFL sets "rules" (replay) and then doesn't follow them? Why change the ruling on the field when you have no clear evidence unless of course........

With the NFL involved in gambling questions are going to be asked...ya think?

Rasul has been playing so weel for the last couple of weeks, he is very deserving of that play. We can bitch around and find nuggets to bitch about but we have a very very good football team. Outstanding QB and RB. An OL that will improve with guys coming back. Good receivers and TE. Specials teams are playing much better. very very good secondary and linebackers are playing very well. People in Florida have to root for freaking Dolphins and jaguars and Bucks (well.. ahahah) we're still very lucky to have that team bring us so much joy. Go Pack Go

A masterpiece of football choreography on offense by Aaron Rodgers, Matt LaFleur, and Nathaniel Hackett.
What they demonstrated with wonderful creativity and excellent team effort is how to spread the field horizontally -- from sideline to sideline.
With our defense scrappy and resilient, this was one of the most enjoyable and satisfying Packers games in a half-century of being a devoted fan.

This game, especially the end, gave me so much emotional whiplash I could spend years in therapy... but instead I think I deserve another beer.

I spent much of the game babbling inanities.  WTF?  Kick it!  Pound it!  Idiots!  Woo hoo!  NoooOOOooo.  Yes!!  No way!  Are you serious???

I know it's cliche, but this was a character win for the Packers, on the road against the #1 team, down multiple key players.

LaFleur had an excellent game plan.  Stick with the running game and short passes.

Our defense gave up some distressing long drives but overall played well.  Can't argue with the game sealing pick.

Even our special teams chimed in... such a rarity!

Hope Tonyan's okay.

GO PACK GO.

7-1 and in the driver's seat for the #1 seed again!

Against a team with that much firepower you have to expect that they will get series where they get it together. You're a hard marker if you expected the Packers to deliver a shut-out beat-down of the #1 ranked team and offense.

Also, it seems that tonight the defense really mixed up its looks to keep Kyler Murray and the Cardinals offense guessing.
I'm going to be looking to the staff at CheeseheadTV and other fans here to get a better read on this promising defense.
Thus far, I feel so much better about our defense than I have in many seasons. I'm actually enjoying the defense, not just the offense. How nice!

I can't believe the defense pulled it off. Without the DC, without two starting corners, without the best corner and one of the best edge rushers in the NFL, with a practice squad cornerback who ended the game against one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, the Packers walked into Arizona and handed an L to the lone undefeated team in the NFL. Simply unbelievable. What a game.

Where is farts after wins?

That game was balls, man. Wow!

This DL has kept improving. They were physical and owned the first half--Murray was absolutely flustered. Enough so that in the second half, the Cards held them constantly to generate offense. There was no way the defense was going to hold that offense in check all night, but they played well.

An awesome, fitting win. Grinding out a game like this, shorthanded, on the road shows tremendous character.

That was an identity changing first half. GBs often been the talented team that occasionally gets blindsided by a team that's tougher and more physical. Not tonight. They came out swinging in a way I haven't seen from them in a long time.

You bring up a good point about the holding. It was pretty significant and not called. It definitely was part of the reason why the Cardinals moved the ball better.

A veteran QB who sometimes doesn't seem to understand that just because a play isn't going to be perfect doesn't mean you need to call a TO to correct it.

When you're not at a critical juncture and it's 2nd and 8 and you're not in FG range let alone the RZ, sometimes you take the delay of game or, lord forbid, you just snap the ball and live with the fact the young WR didn't line up correctly and take what the play gives you, and you conserve the TO because in a close game against a top-tier opponent, you might need to lead a last-moments drive down the field to try to get into FG position. Or maybe you might need to challenge a shitty spot of the ball that kept your opponent's must-have drive alive on 4th down..

Rodgers needs to be better about weighing the moment vs. the value of TOs at the end of the game a bit better at times.

Gut reactions:
- St Brown holds on first play. Ugh.
_ Malik blocking from behind on a punt return. Who is coaching these guys?
- Three takeaways. Won the game.
- Play calling within the 5 yard line?????????????? Gotta get better. Should have scored 35.
- Good game from both the defense and OL.
- Rasul Douglas. Who cares if King comes back.
- I like the short distance run with both Dillon and Jones in game. Why not do that at the goal line??

Team keeps fighting and in good position.

Great point, Packer_Fan, to have both Jones and Dillon in the backfield for at least some plays at the goal line.
It had worked so well earlier in the game when Dillon motioned into the backfield to join Jones, then took the handoff on a diagonal run to get a big first down.
This double backfield would also set up the pass as a surprise.

I think, when we look at the stats, the previously untargetted Winfree will have had a bigger impact on the game than ESB. Last night was a chance for ESB to prove he belonged. He did not take that chance. He wasn’t bad, but he was mostly invisible.

What are the odds.....

TWO 1st and goal drives from the 3 yard line results in THREE total points.

Defense gives up drives of 94, 75, and 81 yards in the 2nd half.

On the road on a short week against an undefeated team.

And we win.

Seriously....what are the odds?

Man, that entire Defense and O-Line deserves so much credit. Shoutout to Cobb on that beautiful TD (more people will fully appreciate the art on replay. The only issues I have about this game are:

1. Poor TO management
2. The personnel on the last Red Zone trip. Where was Big Dog and/or Dillon?

Can't be mad at anything else when going up against a 7-0 squad with so many of your starters missing.

I said in comment this team earlier this week has HEART... We just saw they have TONS of it...

I thought Jerry Gray and Kirk Oliviadotti called a hell of a Defensive game. That's a really good offense and the Packers just held them to 21.

I thought MLF called an excellent game...UNTIL we reached the Red Zone. I will NEVER understand 3 straight pass plays on that failed Red Zone trip after the muffed punt and a first and goal.

WHY can't MLF put in AJ Dillon when were sitting at the 1/2 yard line. Hey, I love Aaron Jones and he definitely has a nose for the endzone but to not even try Dillon?

Rasul Douglass is a Godsend.

I LOVE this team too!!

Great job and a great effort by the entire team. The Packers played it pretty much as I hoped. Run the ball, grind down the Cards D, passes to Jones and the TEs and tough, hard, gritty defense.

Don’t know why we don’t have Dillon in there on goal line in the 4th quarter. He was pounding the Cards all evening.

Our OL did a great job as well. DL was tremendous in the 1st half.

Good, tough, win on the road without many of our best players. Get some rest guys and get our guys back for KC.

Man- Packers second half defense was pretty porous. Lucky to get the turn overs! Let’s hope Tonyan is back (but my guess is he’s done- which sucks). Head scratcher moment throwing on 4th and 6 inches…. Packers identity seems to be balanced and methodical offense and jeckyl and Hyde defense. Seems like special teams coming still sucks - not sure what Hill was thinking running that KO out of the end zone. But probably best Thursday Night game ever!

WOOOOO what a game. A team without their three top receivers, 2 starting offensive linemen, their top 2 corners, and their best pass rusher j, that lost it's tight end during the game just went on the road in a short week and beat an undefeated team!

And what a rollercoaster ride. From a dagger moment to, oh wait a minute, to oh crap, to good lord they're going to lose this thing, to jubilation!

But with that said- WHY THE HELL CAN'T THIS TEAM GET TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE ON TIME!!! This has gone on for years now and what the hell is the problem with the play communication that takes so long. We have always said this will cost them a game someday and this was nearly the one.

That may be true, but talk about a completely manufactured statistic.

What's the significance of the 40 game mark? It's not a metric of a full season; only 3 seasons in NFL history were 10 games long (1943, 44, 45).

Other season lengths since 45 were 14, 15, 16- none divide into 40

The only significance of 40 games would seem to be that it makes the stat possible, lol.

Best game of the season.

Zero hero ball. Looked like a MLF offense throughout the entire game. Balanced attack.
Only the failed red zone irked me, due to lack of putting the rock into the RBs hands.

Otherwise, wow. I was thinking Pack probably had a little less than 40% chance to win this game. They looked in control the entire 1st half and did enough to hang on and win it in the 2nd- against a powerhouse offense and a stifling defense.

Great job.

Great win but I don't get how the MVP is so lost when it comes to play clock awareness. This is a new development over the Lafleur era and it needs to be fixed. It SHOULD have cost the Packers the game but thankfully Malcolm Butler, I mean Rasul Douglas came through.

Not a new development. When MM was in town, I can't count the number of times I heard people saying things like:

"MM got the play in to Rodgers late, so Rodgers HAD to call that TO."

or

"MM's offense is too Verbose. It takes so long to just get the plays called, that's why Rodgers never has time left on the clock before he snaps the ball, and why he has to burn so many TOs at the LOS."

There's a long list of things that people used to blame on MM that, for some reason, continue to happen under MLF. It's because a lot of things weren't really on MM; they were on the QB, who was quite happy to let the fanbase and the media hang his shortcomings on his head coach.

The Packers' distant cousin of the Miracle at the Meadowlands, the miracle in Maricopa County....what a gritty win, and what a nice tap dance by Douglas at the end.

The RBs were tough and determined after contact, and we needed them to be. O-line held up well for the most part.

Poor calls on the 3rd and 4th-and-goal in the fourth quarter. After the Jones TD was reversed, try to burrow again, leap, fake 'em out with a tackle-eligible, I don't know--we're too reliant on the pass down here, but maybe giving Lewis another shot at a high ball wouldn't have been a bad idea.

Would have liked to see our safeties in closer at times on the Cardinals' two second half TD drives.

Lancaster almost had that safety on Edmonds, damn it--would have saved us a lot a drama. Oh well.

Thank goodness the game ended the way it did--giving up a successful 99.5 yard drive to finish the game would have been a tough pill to swallow.

Taylor hadn’t practiced for weeks. Yet he made a key ST stop and at least one key offensive block. We need a guy like him, especially if Lazard is out for a bit. That’s not to detract from the fact that Winfree, while not perfect, made more of an impact than ESB. I would love ESB to affirmatively grab hold of a game and make a statement of why he is in the league. This might have been his best chance on paper.

I said it would take a miracle. I stand by my statement. The Cards had the Packers right on the doorstep of a loss. Less than 15 seconds left. No time outs. The receiver has no clue that the ball is headed his way. Douglas swings around him like he was a heavy bag and snags the ball. Unbelievable.

Campbell has helped change this defense. It is much more physical than I have seen in years. But when Clark goes out it is very noticeable, and not just on the TD play.

I know Nags doesn't want to talk about it, but damn. You got a wide receiver off the practice squad and another who hasn't played in weeks. Tonyan goes down and Deguara looks like he just showed up for rookie camp. You have two tough backs who can bulldoze, and pass block, and catch the ball out of the backfield. Are you telling me there are only, what, two plays with a two-back set in the playbook? Are you saving it all for the playoffs? What gives?

Holy smokes. This team just finds ways to win. Damn. TV was talking about the Cards being a team of destiny because they were so lucky to catch the Packers short handed? That's not destiny, that is luck. Now who is the team of destiny?

This team fought its ass off. The staff coached its ass off. Every last guy. The O-line blocked its ass off. The D-line was disciplined and at times, had moments where they mauled the Cardinals.

Dillon and Jones are a punishing duo. It wasn't Rodgers best night, but he still commanded the line of scrimmage and did some wizardry escaping some blitzes.

I'm so impressed with Rasul Douglas - BRING HIM BACK!! Kevin King (who is never healthy anyway) can walk in 2022 and I WANT DOUGLAS. I want that dude on the team again.

This really exorcised some demons. There's been some gut wrenching defeats there...the 2009 OT loss, the 2015 regular season game where Rodgers almost got murdered without an O-line, then of course the playoff loss....this is the closest thing this team has felt to the 2010 team.

The scary thing is, they haven't even peaked yet. ONTO KANSAS CITY!

Did Ty Summers not realize he could take the muffed punt into the end zone for a touchdown?

He looked to be trying to down it, not realizing that it had been touched. I’m not sure any of the other Packers around him were aware either. Remember, if it wasn’t touched, the last thing we wants is to let the ball cross into the end zone.

Yep totally agree on him just trying to down. I din't even think the returner touched, until I saw the replay. Like it just pulled back 1 finger, so I'll say Summers was just doing his job, no way he knew it was live.

I think that the rules do not allow Summers to advance the muffed punt.

We all saw we saw. Let’s green bells ring. Go pack go. Talk about the difference, let’s talk about the two headed snake that strikes to kill. Mini bye, and onto the next one. Good night

I disagree that Rodgers was "off most of the night." The timing in the passing game was off, yes. But that is to be expected when our top 3 WRs were sitting the game out, and mental errors were made by non-starters (e.g., Deguara lining up wrong on key red zone play). I think Rodgers did a great job of spreading the ball around and moving the chains on a night when our customary WR playmakers were all out of action...

AR was off and not the first time. In normal games he just forces everything to Adams what will cost us.
The young guys are open a lot with way more seperation than some of his targets. The "trust" stuff is just strange for an great NFL QB. He can learn a lot here from the other top guys who did more with less.
But at least St.Brown hat a good game and you can see what he can do if he would be used.

Great win by MLF, the running game and the D. The young WR are get a lot of seperation as well. St. Brown was open a lot again, should had way more targets and snaps.
Gute is a great GM

I give Rodgers the benefit of the doubt on a lot of the misfires, with all of the confusion on offense, but there's no excuse for squandering all your timeouts on the final drive and then taking a delay of game at the one-yard-line.

Speaking of the one-yard-line, it appears that we are now back into the replay review wilderness. I thought the league had finally committed to not overturning plays without clear evidence, but now they are back to just making their best guess regardless of what was called on the field, even if there is no clear view of the play.

Is there a single Packers fan who doesn't believe JUSTICE wasn't served last night?

I simply couldn't imagine that the visual evidence was there to overturn the touchdown ruling by Jones.

My gut aches from eating too much Halloween candy during the game, but the win sure helps comfort the tummy. So many wasted time-outs. We won TOP and loved to see us running the ball. Wish we would run it down near the goal line. Great atmosphere and sounded like a home game with so many Packer Backers in attendance. Hope Tonyan is ok. We did what we had to do to get the W. GPG!

An unbelievable win for the Pack. It’s easy to second guess play calls, but we were prepared to win this game. I was not sold on just how good everyone was saying and writing about the Cardinals. It was awesome to hear, GO Pack Go chant last night. It’s scary to think how good we can be with all our key players on the field. Don’t take the foot off the gas pedal just yet, there will be plenty of time to celebrate in February.

-Eight different guys caught passes tonight.

…and none of them were named Adams, Valdez-Scantling, or Lazard. Hm, I wonder why…

-Speaking of which, Rodgers was off most of the night.
