Gut Reactions: Packers pummel the Bears in season opener

The Bears do indeed still suck.

  • I could not be more excited for Jordan Love
  • I'm going to see that play where Wyatt took down Fields on the bootleg in my dreams tonight.
  • The pairing of Wyatt and Clark is going to be a PROBLEM for teams.
  • Romeo Doubs is a dawg
  • FOX showing Jordan Love's mother having a bunch of Bears fans around her and then seeing that all of them had left well before the game was over was just *chefs kiss*
  • The biggest concern coming out of this game: Quay Walke's head. The second biggest concern: Aaron Jones' leg.
  • Speaking of Quay, what an INCREDIBLE job in that interception return. Give him a few snaps on offense!
  • I loved how physical Rasul was all game long.
  • I thought Jayden Reed was done for the season...and then the Packers said he just cramped up and then he was out there recovering an onside kick. Wild emotional ride.
  • No, no, Romeo Doubs is a DAWG.
  • The Packers can roll pass rush through in waves. So, so encouraging.
  • Great to see Brooks get his first sack.
  • I still can't believe the play where Love fumbled the snap, had it bounce right back to him and then chucked it up to a wide open Musgrave. Unreal.
  • Hell of a debut for Anders Carlson.
  • Don't listen to anyone who tries to minimize how fun that was. Yes, the Bears are a bad football team, but you can't control who lines up across from you. You can only go out there and beat the team the NFL schedules you to play. And the Packers did that. Enjoy it.
  • So, so excited for the start of a new era in Packers football.
  • Go Pack Go

Hoping Vegas lost a lot of money on that spread. We have things to clean up and we can't be taking dumb penalties go forward, but it is hard not to be extremely happy with this result.

The Bears are a bad football team.
It was over when the Bears went for it on 4th down on their 1st possession.
Fields has not improved at all.
Love looked good, calm, and in control.
They have some spice.
The Defense couldn't have had a better opponent to start the season.
I still cannot get on board with double-digit wins, yet.

Yeah, the team that led the league in rushing last year, on their home field.

""""The Defense couldn't have had a better opponent to start the season"""

The Bears outrushed the Packers, just like last year. They ran it more times for more yards and a better average, just like last year. And yet, they don't score points, just like last year. Can you explain why that happens?

In 7 of the 13 games today the winning team outrushed the losing team today. Teams rushed for 200 yards today and won and others rushed for 200 yards and lost.

I don't think losing the rushing battle is the big win you think it is. The Packers won because they won the turnover battle and had way more explosive plays than the Bears, not because they rushed for fewer yards.

I think winning the points battle is big. Real big. Huge.

When you say "outrushed", what does that mean? Attempts? Yards? Average? I'd like some clarification. It seems to me, from the stats you cited, that whether you outrush your opponent or not, your chances are about 50/50? So why do people get their panties in a wad about rushing yards when it just....does....NOT...correlate with winning, making the playoffs, or advancing.???

Points. Points. Points.

Probably because games, like we had in NFCC game where SF ran our guts into the ground. SF Kapernick literally running all over us and killing our playoffs as well. Good teams that are pretty evenly matched lose by penalties or A fumble or A Interception. Teams that have a poor DL or OL get steam rolled. I think we may have the players to turn the corner. We have lost a lot of playoff games. The wounds or stigma of how we lost them are still there LH. That's why stopping the run is: A BIG DEAL....We need to prove we can do it....then it won't be as big a deal. Gute is prioritizing offensive playmakers now and defense with high picks for a while now. I think our last 2 drafts will enable us to get to the show possibly next season after a year of seasoning a lot of youth. I'm liking the energy. GPG

The Bears had 3 wins last season. Yes they could run on us, most good RBs could, but they were awful and shed talent in season too. Today they were worse, if anything. It’s pretty obvious why they didn’t go all in on Fields. On today’s performance, their biggest rivals might be the Giants and Arizona.

I LOVED the way Wyatt hustled and played. That kid is SO quick he's going to be a big problem for opposing offenses.

Good luck to Aaron Jones and Quay Walker. I think I saw Reed on the hands team AFTER he limped off on one foot. I thought I saw his heal get kicked so I hope that's all it was and he walked it off.

Note to MLF... When Aaron Jones leads your offense down the field on the first TD drive (First drive of season) and then you keep going 3 and out, put him in FASTER!

We scored over 30 on offense, we scored a defensive TD, and we kind of crushed their spirit a little bit.....they were on the sideline with that "WTF?" look on their face. I think it's one of the best openers we've ever had.

If we can duplicate this in Atlanta, we'll be 2-0.

Chicago ran more times, for more yards, than we did. But if you're one of those Old School guys that think that points are more important than yards on the ground, then continue to believe that. II think other things on defense are more important than stuffing the run, and I'll continue to believe that.

Hope quay and Jones get back soon. Because Jones catching balls for this team, (which we've all been screaming for, for years) will be a big part of this offense.rodgers always wanted to throw him 59 yard bombs and Jones would drop them cus they were tough catches sometimes, but love will just hit him in space and let Jones do the work. Half or more of Dillon's rushes were getting the handoff standing still...like a draw play.

He needs to get the ball running downhill.

When he took over after AJ stayed out, he got the ball on the move and moved the pile and finally piled up yards.

Cant really ask much more of Love. We survived some rookie drops. We showed we could stop the run.

The Bears rarely looked capable of scoring enough points. We weren’t really tested deep or by a serious dual threat, but that isn’t our fault. Fields is Taysom Hill if he’s lucky. But a 123 QB rating and a win is something to build on and celebrate. Next year the Bears may be picking a QB really early.

Thursday night I came away with the feeling there just might be a real football team in Dee-Troit. There's a real team in Green Bay, too.

I enjoyed watching this win over the Bears much more than the wins last year. Justin Fields is a talented, slippery MFer. Like Nagler said, don't minimize this win.

I liked our intensity and physicality. The pads were popping! And, we put up 38, ffs!

So happy for Jordan Love and his family.

Finally, something real to talk about. This game was a lot of fun. Bears didn't look that bad to start so I was pleased we were ahead. Maybe the team confidence grew and we just took over all around. In the end, Bears and Fields did not look that good. So let's see how we do next week before celebrating too much. I am still not a believer in Love being the next HOF'er but he did a lot to calm my concerns. I am not a fan of his motion/release and he overthrew 2 TD's. I was expecting an INT or 2 so I'm very relieved. He certainly seems like he has command of the game and made some very good throws. A lot of team plays to be happy about.
Maybe it's a bit too early (!!) but I was kidding with some friends up here (I'm in NY area) that a Packers - Jets Superbowl would be absolutely nuts!

We scored over 30, without the pick six, but I had the feelings that we were leaving points on the field. I think our offense can play much better; we had a couple of bobbled exchanges, some drops, some near catches that would have been great plays.

We led all the way. By the end of the 3rd quarter, we already had all the points we needed. There was some garbage after that but the bottom line is that we beat these guys by 3 TDs on their own field without one of our top offensive weapons.....or Aaron Rodgers. I hope that they let that sink in for a while.

Firstt win as an NFL starter for Love - Check!
First Extra Point made by Carlson - Check!
First FG made by Carlson -Check!

Always good to get the first of the season and a career out of the way.

Great games by Aaron Jones, Romeo Doubs and Jordan Love. Strong game for the defense.

This just the first game of the season and it was against a lowly Bears teams. Nevertheless I was impressed with how the Packers dominated the second half against the Bears.

It was a good, solid victory. Now we need to carry on and keep it going against Atlanta next week. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I am liking this new chapter in Packer history. Not that I didn't enjoy the 30 years of two HOF quarterbacks, but I got tired of having my hopes set high, only to have them too often dashed by playoff disappointments.

This season I am free of any such expectations, and have just mostly curiosity for what kind of product the Packers will put on the field. After one (and yes, I know it's just one) game, I like what I see. It wasn't perfect but the offense, defense, special teams, and coaching all looked good today against the Bears. More than anything else I sense a vibe, an intangible feeling, that this team has chemistry and character.

Special kudos to 1) Jordan Love for passing his first test. He made a few errant throws, but many more good ones. More than anything else, his poise and decision making was excellent. 2) MLF for acknowledging that he under utilized Aaron Jones in the first half and 3) Jones for producing. 4) Doubs for some elite receiving skills. 5) The young Packer pass rush for making Fields' life hell. 6) Alexander and Douglas for their physical play. 7) Quay Walker for an incredible pick six. 8) Carlson for a solid debut. 9) The Bears for sucking as always.

Great first win at our hated rival's stadium. Love was cool. calm, collected.

Not much negative to say about the Packer performance.

Here's my first game two cents:

Who can't appreciate Love's first game as the man... He now Owns the Bears!
Meyers was bad in the first half
Ford was bad all game
Wicks play like a rookie/nothing "purdy in his game today"
Reed had your typical rookie game, believe he will be okay after he got helped off the field
MLF, please get rid of the horizontal sideline pass (and Never to Dillion)
Please have Wilson dressed next week, losing faith in Dillion, ankle tackles take him down
Lastly Savage was his typical Savage Roller Coaster

Never thought I'd state this... "Nothing bad to say about Barry! Good aggressive D!"

...and this was without the guy they supposedly needed to stretch defenses (Watson).

Plenty of good...plenty of stuff to fix. All told: 1-0 this week is all that matters (and MIN dropping a conference game at home even when Kark fed the ball to their all-world WR all day was **chef's kiss**)

Love seemed to settle in after apparent butterflies in the early going. It's always good to see improvement. And speaking of improvement, the defense looked pretty solid during the game. Still some poor tackling, but overall, it looks like they picked up where they left off last year. Also, the entire team seemed to play with more attitude than I've seen in years. Punch us in the mouth? Expect to lose a few teeth. LaFleur even seemed to understand the importance of getting the ball to Jones more, and letting him create. There also seemed to be a very large drop in production when Jones hurt his hamstring. Dillon did his best, but he was being hit behind or at the line almost every carry. Still, a win is a win. And getting off to a fast start in the first game? Priceless.

These aren't the same old Bears--they're worse. Talk about a lack of offensive adjustments on their part--they might want to consider opening things up a bit if they're interested in winning. If it wasn't for Fields' incredible elusiveness, the game would have been even more one-sided.

Enough of that. We converted a majority of our third downs and all of our red zone opportunities. They did not because our defense came ready to play, resulting in only three third down conversions. We did not turn the ball over. They did thanks to great efforts by our two 2022 first round picks. Savage had 10 tackles, 5 solo, including a nice one in the backfield.

Love delivered when it mattered, period. Carlson, despite a couple of short kickoffs, was accurate between the goalposts.

There were some poor penalties, rookie mistakes, and a couple of strange offensive calls, but they'll be covered later. For a team fielding so many young and inexperienced players, I don't think we could have hoped for a better opening performance by the Packers.

Do you think Carlson is instructed to keep it to the goal line on kickoffs? Do you think he’s just miss hitting it? I was wondering why he just doesn’t pound it through the end zone he’s got plenty of leg. I’d rather have the certainty of NO return and going 75 yards every time than this short kick strategy, if that’s what they’re trying.

Dillon didn't impress anywhere near Jones. MLF played Dillon way to much in the 1st half.

At halftime, MLF told Kuhn "we have to get AJ more involved in the second half."

That was a goodie!

I think MLF may have called his best game. Team win, starting the the HC, OC, DC, ST coaches and assistants.

It was a fairly conservative first half, unsurprisingly. A little less so in the second. We saw some inexperience from our rookie receivers as well. However, that was to be expected. Hopefully that opens up which snaps and the eventual return of Watson.

If Jones can’t go next week, I’m hoping we have the courage to play Wilson, but even if we do, we will need to see more aggressive use of other skill players not named Doubs.

We've got a quarterback, we've got a tight end, we've got a kicker, we've got special teams, we've got a defense and Bearville is already weeping.

Everything is right with the world.

I was expecting a close game and a narrow Packer win, and that's what it was looking like for awhile, and then the Packers just started crushing them. It started with the field goal just before halftime.

The defense was supposed to be more aggressive this year, and they were! Even when their aggressiveness got them burned a couple of times, they did not let up.

The Bears offense looked just as feeble as last year. Even when they were way behind in the third quarter, they were just handing the ball off and throwing short passes. It's frustrating to play against running QBs, but it seems like those QB runs, even when they are successful, disrupt the continuity of the offense. The Bears never got into a flow except on that one TD drive in the third quarter.

How refreshing to watch our QB run the coach's offense. He wasn't trying to force things as Rodgers so often did. And Love is so CALM. He never looked flustered, although it helped that he never faced much of a pass rush. The O-line was dominant in pass protection today.

Love only threw 27 passes, and only completed 15. And we scored over 30.

Four of his completions were to Doubs, in five targets. Doubs caught two TDs in those four receptions, and had two other key 3rd down receptions to keep a drive alive. He, along with Endzone
Jones, really powered the revival.

Do you know how many times Jones touched the ball today? He had 9 carries and 2 receptions in four targets before he left injured. So that's 11 touches, for 127 yards and 2 TDs. That's nearly incomprehensible. Dillon and Taylor hauled it less than 40 yards in 18 carries. Let's keep Jones healthy.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Meanwhile, back at the peach plantation, I've been scouting Atlanta and will be attending the game. Atlanta, today, struggled with mighty Carolina until the 4th quarter when two successful drives ended the game. I'm not sure Atlanta is any better than the Bears at this point. Mariotta is the QB, Pitts is the passing target at TE, and they've added Bijan Robinson. I don't see why they'd be considered a bigger offensive challenge than the Bears.

Love played for part of the last game we put up that many points. I think we only managed that once last year without overtime, but it was a better offensive showing than the vast majority of last year, certainly (including playing Chicago twice of course).

One surely has to be happy at that, but I do have to admit to a reservation: today at least, Chicago looked worse than last year and their self-belief looks wafer thin.

How about them rooks:

Jayden Reed: 2 catches/48 yards. 3 punt returns/54yds. Remind anyone of a young Randall Cobb?
Luke Musgrave: 3 catches/50 yards.
LVN: 2 tackles/1 sack
Anders Carlson: 52yd FG/ 5/5 XP

Looks like a bright future!

What a game for Jordan Love. Cool, calm, controlled. Ice water in his veins. Field General. We have QB!

I am going to watch Colin Cowherd's show tomorrow to see what dish of crow he is served. He better eat it!

And do I love the Packer Big Men. Our OL and DL/EDGE just wore the Bears down. Love had clean pockets most of the afternoon...and the pressure on Fields was relentless. Getting stops on run downs and forcing Fields to pass was perfect!

In Rich we Trust! Carlson was as Bisaccia advertised. Whelan is a field flipper and a good holder to boot!

Viking lose, Packers win. Both teams delivered on my weekly desire.

Although I was pleasantly surprised let’s not start crowning anyone just yet. The best indicator will be probably week 4-5 once teams have more film on him and play to his strengths and weakness differently. But an absolute hell of a start. Even if his output dips a bit his foundation shows he’s there. Can’t say enough about how crucial that offensive protection upfront was. Most first time QBs run for their life so yo have time in the pocket is perfect for a newly starting QB.

I’m eager to see how he responds to pressure and mistakes but for the time being I can’t think of a more positive step that Love made.

Love knows the Offense.
The fumble; then to Musgrave was Awesome.
The over- throw wasn't.
But then; the Wrs were making mistakes.
Jones gets the game ball!

Once, you could see he was baiting Fields into trying to go wide around him, but Fields turned it up and threw. The next time, Fields fell for it and tried to go around, but Van Ness just moved laterally about 10 feet in the blink of an eye and he got hid hands on him and put him on the ground. That's impressive, to me.

The Packer pressure was relentless. If we're really that good, it's going to be a good season.

Yeah, our D-line and edge rushers lived up to the promise they showed in training camp. There was usually a wall of defenders moving toward Fields when he went back to pass. The Bears never really tried to throw the ball downfield consistently. It was a junk offense, and our defense gets credit for forcing them into it.

The D line was great.

Jayden Reed played well in his debut but he made a cramp look like he had been shot in the leg by a shotgun.

Everyone loves Aj Dillon cause he's the nicest guy in the world but he has to step it up. If Jones has any sort of injury that requires weeks off here, Dillon needs to really show out or he's done for and might end up going down the depth chart.

It was only the Bears but it was fun. On to the next.

"Jayden Reed played well in his debut but he made a cramp look like he had been shot in the leg by a shotgun."

No kidding. I thought he must have blown out his ACL or broke his leg, even though the replay showed that nothing unusual happened to his leg.

I agree with everyone about everything! The game was just so fun! This was a coming out party for so many young talented players. Yes, and no surprise....Jordan Love is a hell of a good QB, and he is only 24 years of age. The Packers appear to have extended the 30 years of QB excellence.

The game ball should definitely go to Brian Gutey! He selected Jordan Love in 2020 and was lambasted continuously for over 3-years for that selection. Gutey put up with public attacks from our previous star QB. His every move is over analyzed & questioned, yet he has assembled the NFL's youngest team with talent after the departure of our previous QB. With possibly an extra #1 selection once again in 2024 (make it a big body in the trenches) this team will be screaming talent. What a bright future with a whole lot of possibilities for us Packer fans.

Yes, Jordan Love is for real, and Gutey should get a game ball!

Dillion should watch tape of the late John Brockington's running style. Emulating the power of the Brockington high knee kick might help stop him from going down with just a swipe at his ankles. MLF, please activate E. Wilson next Sunday.
