Gut Reactions: Packers overcome themselves to beat Patriots

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers overtime victory over the Patriots

  • It truly doesn't matter how you "look" in early October. It does matter whether or not you learn from how bad you looked, which god knows the Packers did today.
  • The Packers offense fucked around for much of the game. Just glad the team never ended up having to find out.
  • Joe Barry doesn't care if it's a backup QB or a backup to a backup QB, his favorite flavor is vanilla regardless.
  • Seriously, Barry has way too much talent at his disposable for his squad to look so helpless.
  • The call on Kenny Clark was something that happens in every single NFL game without being flagged.
  • Speaking of the officiating, this ref was like a scared grade school kid getting the lead in the school play.
  • Aaron Rodgers played like garbage in the first half.
  • At some point, you need to run the offense and stop only throwing to dudes you trust.
  • Rashan Gary is a man among boys.
  • Really hope Adrian Amos is ok.
  • That was a hell of a stick by Darnell Savage.
  • Matt and Aaron need to start leaning into "Jimmy's and Joes, not X's and O's"
  • TJ Slaton is fun to watch.
  • I'm starting to think Elgton Jnekins should move back to guard.
  • This team really tries to outsmart itself way too much.
  • That said, I love them. Go Pack Go.

Nothing to add here. See you next week or this week's Confession or maybe I should go to Church instead.

P.S.

You just never know what to expect from this team anymore. One thing for sure. Is it feels like we've haven't had an easy win, going away in like a decade, against anyone.

Trying to figure out how we beat a 3rd string QB is insane. Still think the refs messed up the last Pats TD and the second Doubs TD.

That rule in the end zone has never made much sense to me because of the “football move” element. To me, going deliberately to ground is a football move. Perhaps I played too much Rugby, but that’s never made sense.

That’s said, I believe it was an incompletion under the rule, even if my gut tells me it shouldn’t be.

Belichick made a 3rd stringer compete. Run, run, and run some more, then play action when needed. A win is a win, at the end of the day, a W is better than a L. But, as the ultimate goal is a SB, our team needs a lot of work

Gut reaction:

This was not "winning ugly". A freaking 3rd string QB with help of the officials (who by the way didn't know left from right, up or down or likely which teams were actually playing. A mix of the 3 stooges and Keystone cops.) Take us into overtime? Are you kidding me????

Running up the gut wasn't working, I don't know if I want to hug MLF for staying with it or bitch slap him for not adjusting.

The monkey remains on the Packers back, "the team that ALWAYS plays down to weaker opponents."

It's an OT "W" but only by the skin of our teeth !

It began to work again once we started to pass a little deeper again. Unsurprisingly. If all you do is run, defenses are going to make it more and more difficult. The Pats D isn’t Bears bad.

It was, one of my interests of this game, to see how our D would respond,as the obvious game plan was to run straight at our D, everyone knew that was the Patriots intent, especially, with a 3rd string QB. But, at times our D was simply gouged. And then the play action pass off the Patriots run, made our D look confused. I want to see such a better performance of our defense, moving forward, when it's a mano e mono situation

WHOLLY SHIT! What an eyesore of a game.
The Defense again proved it is not a Top 5 Defense.
The Offense is many bad adjectives and efficient in each.
27-24 to a NE team with a third string backup QB cannot be accepted as a win is a win.
They won't win all these type of games.
Better figure shit out quick on both sides of the ball.
See you all next week.

If you are a player on Special teams you are still a professional, please act accordingly and not draw a penalty in front of the cameras and Romo on account you are having a tiff. Bonehead move not acceptable on the High School level much less in a paid to play league.

And while on the topic of Special teams, while ours may not be truly special we don’t suck overall which is a huge gain year over year. TE play in the passing game downfield is non-existent which is going to be a hurdle to jump at some point.

Miss the quick passing game employed for the first quarter last week, appears to gone away like long hot Summer days.

Rodgers is still Rodgers at times, which is both good and bad as it has been for the last few years.

And no matter how you cut it we beat Brady and Belichick on back to back Sundays and for me I don’t care if they played their ones, or their threes. Glad to be past these two weeks with 2 Ws!

The D did ok, except for that one drive with the TD on a guy they ignored. I’d like more aggression with this roster, but 17 points over 4 quarters and OT isn’t bad, even with a 3rd stringer. They looked pretty gassed by the start of the 4th, but rebounded a bit behind an offensive drive.

Belicheck did more with less than LaFleur with Rodgers. I’m not not a fan of the man, but as a coach he shows just how inept LaFleur is.

We are not going anywhere this year if LaFleur and Rodgers can’t find a will and a way to involve all 3 rookie receivers. Lazard can only do so much. When a rookie makes mistakes, we can’t afford to ignoring them for 30 minutes.

We won, but we should never have let them hang In there. If this doesn’t lead to radical change in approach, the win will mean nothing come December. An unequivocal warning that attitudes and tactics must change or this us a season too far for both Rodgers and LaFleur.

Gary and Jones deserve a ton of credit and Lazard isn’t far behind.

I thought the D did great for the most part considering they were without Ja and Amos. Also it was mainly Harris and Stevenson they were fighting, not Zappe. They did a better job than week 2, but the run D has to be more consistent

It is tougher without Ja and Amos, but the Packers defense held up when they needed it most (late Q4, OT). Coaching needs to be better on both sides of the ball.
Run defense was bad in Q3 and early Q4 but good for the rest of the game (I did appreciate that though as a Rhamondre fantasy owner).
If Amos ends up needing to miss time, the Packers have a few options: Elevate Abernathy from the PS, sign Jaquiski Tartt (a free agent), or sign Anthony Harris from the Broncos' PS. I would opt for the latter.
Gary and Jones were great. 1st-half A-Rod was not. Offense did groove more in the 2nd half.
The refs screwed GB with that incompletion and that pass on the delay-of-game penalty. I thought, though, the offense rebounding after the Pick 6 was nice. Play calling is still questionable though.

I know it is unlikely, but please put Jenkins back at Guard! He stinks as a Right Tackle.

Please top using 2 D-Lineman when your opponent is obviously going to call a run-heavy offense. Geez how many coordinators do we have to go thru to learn that simple lesson?

For $50 million our QB1 is seriously overpaid.

There was No doubt he'd find a way to get it done in OT.
I didn't like the game plan at all. I know if you win, it can't be all bad. But we just can't expect the refs to make the right calls.

Matt Judon gave Jenkins all sorts of problems in pass pro. Still, AR got hit just 3 times. The run blocking was pretty good. Weird. I wrote that NE is pretty solid in the trenches. I actually thought that NE's DL didn't play as well as I expected. Not surprised that NE could run even with a end of the bench QB playing.

To support you, there is the stats of the 1st half - time of possesion: Cheatriots 19:11 - Packers 10:49.

That gives Packers D over 8 minutes more on the field than Cheatriots D.

Barring OT, at the end of the regulation (before OT) Cheatriots still have few minutes (~4 minutes) possesion time advantage. That is huge advantage in producing fatigue with players who is playing D (they are not the part of the team which actively play, but reactively and that is the reason why D players are generally more easily becomes fatigue).

Glad to see the "Let's cover no one" defense show back up. So tired of Matt Lafleur lackadaisical response to not having his team ready once again. We've got to get better ...... really?????

Defensive secondary looked completely lost for most of the game once again.

How is it that Patriots seemed to average 20+ per return and Packers still getting next to nothing. Time to move on from Amari Rodgers.

Agree with first one. Secondary was without Ja and Amos, to be fair, and there should have been a delay of game on the TD Stokes allowed. Rodgers had a couple of nice returns - also, the Pats' STs are extremely good.

I didn't see Amari have a good return. I saw him gain yards until someone was within 5 yards of him and then he was tackled; usually with an arm tackle. In the last year, he has barely learned how to catch a kick (or not) and run toward the other team's end zone. He seems like a good kid but he just doesn't have the ability to evade tacklers and seemingly has no burst. He will never return a kick/punt for anything more than the minimal yards. Time to cut bait and put someone back there who has a chance to return it (Watson?).

Elgton Jenkins looks like a guy who normally plays in a phone booth, who's been asked to play in space with a leg that's not 100% yet.

I didn't watch him closely, but on a number of downs where he was taken to task, it didn't look like he got anywhere near the depth he needed- kick steps nowhere near deep/wide enough. If you're not getting square to your man and you're giving him your edge, you're toast... and that's what it looked like was happening with Jenkins.

Put him back in at Guard where he was an all-pro and he's not being asked to make massive lateral steps. It's not doing this LG any favors asking him to play RT with a leg that doesn't seem to have regained all of its spring yet.

I remember those heady days (all of three weeks ago) when it was great to have Elgton Jenkins back in the lineup even though he was not 100% and was playing out of position. It doesn't feel that way anymore. Hard to believe Yosh Nijman can play so well at LT but can't play RT.

I was going to post something similar, and you beat me to the punch and expressed it better. I'm not an O-lineman or coach, but it appears that (to his credit) EJ came back on an aggressive timetable, and is far from 100%. The Pack should put him in a better position to succeed.

After Jenkins start to practice, I suppose he was back at his basic - left side of the OL. As I already stated it is not easy to change the side. Belichik knows that and almost all pressure from Judon went through outside of Jenkins, meaning he did not do his footwork properly. He was closing inside (what you'll expect from guy who is used to play on the left side of the ball) opening possibility for Judon to run around him.

And, I agree with some posters here that he is surely not yet on 100% with his injured knee, what gives him another problem to solve. I say he is pro-bowl LG and serviceable LT. He has nothing to do on the right side. I hope Packers are preparing Nijman to play RT and that is why they did not use him in this game.

Bakh was very rusty. He allowed several pressures and almost one sack. AR avoid the sack by his feet, but play oucome was not good (if I remember correctly it was incomplete pass).

Also, why they are not considering Lewis as RT. He played that position better than Jenkins... I know, I know, he does not have enough weight, but he has excellent technique.

Every other sports has gone electronic - and I bet baseball does it too when they go to a pitch clock - tennis doesnt call lines at all - automatic . There is no reason at all that they linesman who is making the delay call doesnt have a mike in his ear and somebody in the stands - or it is automatic sync to that mike when it hits zero and if the ball hasnt moved - it is delay penalty.

I said that zebras will call few times in favour of Belichik. It is common thing. Tom Brady and BB are protected species in NFL - there is the reason why their nick name is Cheatriots.

Beside that, whole zebra team looks lost. Remember that call on Kenny Clark for personel faul? They called it first to Cheatriots, than corrected to Packers side. And, that happened several times during the game (two of that calls came on ST plays).

12 played poorly but great when he needed to.
No use of the TE in any way but good to see Bob get the TD. Now use him more.
Crosby has no leg for the end zone and they had good runbacks for good field position.

I'm not sure we really deserved to win this game, but we did. Belichick, Jr. helped us out in OT by getting a little soft in coverage.

In this instance, the game ball does go to The Trust Factor.

Agree about Barry. At least the run defense finally stiffened when it needed to.

Jenkins was BAD. Once C. Jones is off the non-football list, maybe the Packers should consider him.

Romo had some good advice.

Bonehead awards: 1) MLF wasting a timeout on a near-hopeless challenge; 1A) play-calling on the next-to-last drive, 2) Amari not making a fair catch with several seconds left, 3) Doubs and his lack of ball security twice, 4) Anyone who thought the Pats had a weak secondary.

What we need to see more of: The fourth-and-one play call in the third quarter; ANYTHING to catch the defense off-guard. Very well-executed!

A win is a win, but when this team actually plays a team with a really good offense, I don't think it will be pretty.

Bottom line: this team might be 3-1, but it has a lot of growing to do. AND it needs to take better care of the football.

It's interesting to think what the call would have been if Doubs catches the ball at the 5-yard-line and takes a step or two to get into the end zone, but then loses control of the ball when he hits the ground.
Would that be a touchdown? After all, he broke the plane with the ball secure in his hands.
***
In any case, on the play that did in fact happen on the field, the rule should be changed so that Doubs does gets credit for a touchdown.

Sorry Swisch, but that was not the catch. As much I like Doubs he made mistake to keep the ball with one arm only. In that moment you keep ball with both arms to prevent ball poping up or be batted from his hands.

He will learn. We already knows that he is fast to learn on his mistakes. He was very upset by himself on the side line. His 2 catches and runs in OT was things of beauty...

Regarding D and run defense, I do not know did you noticed how Cheatriots played almost 50% of the snaps with 6 OL. That will explain many why they were dominated in offensive run game. Belichik prepared them for that kind of attak. Expect something like than next week.

- Doubs catches well. But he needs to practice securing the ball
- Well, Rodgers did not fall apart after the Doubs fumble (Rodgers did take the responsibility for that fumble in his presser). Nor did he fall apart after the pick 6. So Packers have that going for them.

Another game without the Packers playing a full 60 minutes. Our offense was lackluster in the first he half. Our receivers seemed to be lost out there. Defense played very well and only allowed 3 points in the first half. Gary is becoming a force and a game wrecker.

Rodgers made some brilliant throws in the second half and OT. Doubs makes rookie mistakes but he is going to evolve into a solid weapon for the Packers offense. Rodgers TD to Tonyan was perfect. He should have had to TDs to Doubs but he lost it when he hit the ground. Rodgers throw on that play was perfectly placed. Cobbs was huge in the 2nd half.

Officiating was terrible and looked like they were trying to give the game to the Pats. No excuse for not calling the second delay of game.

I like Jenkins but he was bad today. Move him back to LG and put Runyon at RG. RT is the first position on the OL where Jenkins has not looked good.

MLF needs to keep getting the ball to Jones and Dillon.

On the London! Thanks, Since ‘61

Yes, to all your points.
Per Jenkins, I think he's still not 100%, which is much more noticeable when he plays on the outside.

The first half was absolutely ugly offensive football. I have thought the same thing since week 1. It’s going to take some time for the offense to come together. Be patient I told myself. However, it should gradually improve. Shouldn’t it? They played most of that half like they had never met each other. Why? This is week 4!

The second half was better by the offense. Rodgers seemed to get it going a bit. Some excellent drives etcetera. Of course, then the defense starts playing two hand touch. Did we not expect the Patriots to run? My God it was a 3 rd string rookie! They ran and ran and ran some more. It was barely good enough.

Bottom line is this team needs to start playing much much better. The level of play is completely inconsistent. I believe your record is what it is. Right now this team is very fortunate to be 3-1. A banged up Tampa Bay and thin Patriots squad gave us all we could handle. I get your not going to blow everyone out every week, but they need to come together quickly.

Wasn't able to watch the game, but tuned into Larry and Wayne as always. McCarren made a comment in pregame that not having QB1 in the lineup may be beneficial to the Pats due to him being a turnover machine. Larry felt QB2 might not win it for them, but he likely wouldn't lose it. Seems QB3, and our overall welcoming approach to him almost got the job done. Good for the kid not crapping himself on the big stage.

I'm glad we didn't let this one slip away. I wish I felt this team was improving. I don't. We have some dynamic, talented players, and a whole lotta WTF. Also, I'm sad to say I think Wayne Larrivee is starting to lose it; incorrect calls, sticking to a narrative to sell the game, rote phrases rather than helping the listener "see" the game. Sucks. McCarren and Kuhn do a nice job, though.

In other news, KC is kicking the Buc's ass. Last week the excuse was that they did not have any WRs. Well, what is the excuse today?

The Chiefs don’t have a dysfunctional one dimensional O like we did last week in the second half, prior to that we were shellacking them too till the fumble sent us into safe mode and let them just worry about 10 yards of the field

Because they have an All pro TE in the name of kelce and some good wr's. So i think we cant compare us to KC.
For us we are mostly playing with Rookies and this struggles are somewhat expected but again no excuses for no adjustments being made mid game.

Remeber, there were games where the Rams looked bad last year (at SF, at GB), and they still managed to win it all. If the Packers can learn from their mistakes, have better play-calling, and be more consistent on D, all hope for Rodgers' second ring is not lost. Easier said then done though. GPG!

Agreed but they have some big time players like Kupp and Donald who stepped up when needed. We need to find our own kupp and Donald. Should wait and see as the season goes on who'll be those players to get us to the SB

True.
Clark is good, and Gary is terrific, but neither are close to Donald. Nobody on our D is.

And Kupp is likely much better than any WR we've had or will have (including Adams) but down the road, Doubs may be quite good.

Still, I think quite a few elements are in place to make a run but at this point, we look like, possibly, the 3rd or 4th best NFC team.

so...

IF GB can get rid of MLF and Barry they have a chance?

Is that your takeaway message?

If so... then I agree! The talent is on this roster. The experience to youth ratio is good. The schemes and adjustments are lacking as well as the preparation.

That is on the coaches.

The GB youth seems to be getting better with playing time, the young coach doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. I thought Clements might help. Oh well...

I’m becoming an opioid abuser watching this team.
I expected a blowout, and when it wasn’t happening, my frustration level made me decide I’m never returning my neighbor’s mower.
But, I it makes me feel so much better when I see our head coach on the sidelines, flapping his arms like the karate kid—very inspiring and creative for the offense.
Well, at least we won.
Go Packers!!

MLF has not shown me any growth as an inovative young coaching genius that some proclaimed him to be...he, in my eyes isn't much better, if any better than McCarthy, and Joe Barry...blah...let that dude from the Raiders, the special team coach, have more say in things...this team is toooo mediocre for all the talent thats on the roster....I get jealous watching other defense's that don't have the players the Packers have, fly around and take a few chances...Barry is way too vanilla for me...

Well said—I completely agree with you regarding LaFleur’s alleged offensive genius—I don’t see it. In fact, I don’t see any scheme at all —same with Barry.
And like you say, I’d love to see some energy for a change—flying to the ball—except for a few plays -we seem uninspired.

I will be interested to see what the metrics say, but it looked to me like we were more effective running behind Newman and Jenkins today. Newman seemed to have a much better game. Part if that is likely Bakh being gassed and Nijman is good in the run game, but Runyon didn’t seem at his best again.

"I'm starting to think Elgton Jenkins should move back to guard."

Jenkins is an All-Pro Guard and an above average RT. I don't see why Yosh can't play RT. The coaching staff must know but I'd like to see Yosh get a chance.

I hate that LaFleur and Barry remind me so much of McCarthy and Capers. The same poor adjustments, clock management, same comments after games, "We'll get it fixed" or a variation of. For all the games he's won, LaFleur still comes across as in over his head. Why I don't know.

I’d like to see LaFleur tilt a game in our favor just once. Belicheck had an almost empty hand, but he players it almost well enough to win. Be honest, when have we ever seen even a hint of that out of LaFkeur. MM, particularly in the first 3/4 of his tenure was streets ahead of LaFleur.

I just thumbs up'ed a bunch of the posts that call MLF and Barry to task rather than go a long rant. Here's the short version: ANOTHER game where we are not prepared, soft D with guys left wide open (Nagler, send Barry a tape of your screaming at the screen) and poor play calling. God forbid they should continue with the some of the very quick short passes that were successful last week.

It is the coaching that is holding this team back. Even with the pick 6, and fumble, this should have been a blow out. The 3-1 record is going to cover up for the coaching failures that will show up in Jan.

Aaaaarrrgggghhhh!

GPG!

Ok call me crazy but in this day and age the NFL can't find a better way of calling delay of game when the clock expires??? Multiple games it's been missed and explained away as the ref sees zero then looks to see if the ball has been snapped....How about a frigging buzzer or something?? Ridiculous

You know I thought journalism did not need to use the “f” word to make a point. If a journalist has to resort to using that word maybe they should go back to English 101.

PS. I suppose the response will be “I’m not a journalist.” Which of course then would be correct.
